    This video is very helpful for me. I’m in my 70’s and my waist is larger now in proportion to my hips. This is the perfect way to add a bit of ease to the waist on most skirt patterns. Another lesson learned from you! Thank you. 😊

    I do this on thrifted skirts too - thrift shops always have tonnes of tiny-lady-size skirts, but no older-child clothes. By adding elastic I can bring them down to fit my daughter and take the elastic out again when she grows to fit them! I love the topstitch-finish method for waistbands and cuffs, it's so much quicker than handsewing, and always looks lovely and neat.

      Great idea. There’s an awkward age where it’s hard to dress growing girls. I was in adults clothes at 10 due to my height and I started sewing the next year.

    Another one of your videos added to my favourites! I wanted to thank you for inspiring me to do more hand basting. Every time I get out my needle to hand baste something I think of you :) Yesterday I hand basted some beautiful satin FOE to the neckline and sleeveless arm holes after having to unpick it about 3 times. hahaha I remember you always saying it takes so much less time to just hand baste than unpick later. So true! It's also very relaxing just sitting on the front porch and doing some hand work :) So now I will be doing a LOT more of that. Ultimately it saves time and you get a prettier result. Thank you Katrina!

I just bought a pattern and material yesterday for a pair of pants and it's perfect to try the elastic back waistband on. Thank you for all your sewing tips. Excellent suggestions! I've been doing this alteration for my granddaughter's pants as she's so slim. Most fabrics being knits, I cut two little keyholes and insert elastic to tighten the waist band. I used to make tucks, but this elastic method is so much better.

    I love this technique, and I have used something similar before, this is so much better than stitching in the ditch, and the result looks much better and your stitching finishing everything so well.

      Stitch in the ditch is okay sometimes for some fabric and styles but definitely not my preference if I have the freedom to choose 😄. This way looks so wrong but feels so right lol

    Very helpful! I just bought some wide leg pants very similar to the culottes to see if it’s something I would like before I made the full length ones myself. The ones I bought are a bit big and have elasticated back so I’m going to just open up that side seem and shorten the elastic and probably add some pockets cause that’s always a must!

    Attaching the waistband so you can topstitch and see what you are doing makes perfect sense I will always do that in future. I can’t wear a full back elastic because I have a swayback but I have RTW trousers with elastic at the sides that fit me comfortably so that is perhaps the way for me to go. Great info as always. Thank you.

    This is such an obvious way to sew on a waistband but I've never thought about it - thank you so much! I might try this method for other applications such as where you're told to stitch in the ditch....not my strong point! I always have to add elastic to the back of my ready-made jeans - with those I have to cut a couple of vertical slits to get the elastic inside. Then I zigzag over them and the elastic. Not particularly neat but no-one can see it!

    • @LiftingPinsandNeedles
      @LiftingPinsandNeedles  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great solution too and when no one can see 😉... it’s all very cool. Denim is super hard to unpick too! I’ve broken my share of seam rippers while doing that 😃. Thank you so much for watching.

    Thanks so much for the tutorial. I love gathered skirts, but with waist fluctuations, I'm always frustrated that skirts I make are always a little too big or a little too small. This would eliminate that issue. I can do a gathered flat front, and an elastic section at the back, pretty seamlessly. GREAT tutorial!

    Thank you again Karina for another helpful video :) I searched "sewing elastic to back waist band only" and of course your video popped up! I have a pair of linen pants (RTW $$$) that I've had for a few years and the elastic in the waist band just stretched out and stayed that way :) So I decided to sew elastic only to the back instead of all around. I had some ideas but I think yours is much better :)

    • @LiftingPinsandNeedles
      @LiftingPinsandNeedles  5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I measure the front waistband.... compare it with my waist measurement minus 3”and cut the difference for the length of the elastic. For example: my waist is 34”, the front measures 17”.... I want the waist to be 31” with the elastic inside, so I’ll cut the elastic at 14” (17 + 14= 31”). Just an example... it’s personal preference. Sometimes I’ll cut the elastic shorter if it’s a stretchier type....

      @@LiftingPinsandNeedles thank you so very much Karina for letting me know. I am going to write this down so I can reference it. You are so generous and a fabulous inspiration to me. I have been sewing garments again for the first time in many years! My grandmother taught me as a 5 year old, and now I am teaching my daughters who are 21 and 23. Much love from Sydney, Australia xxxxxxxxxxxx

      How amazing. It’s my dream to teach my nieces someday. The older one is already a bit interested at 5 😄.

      @@LiftingPinsandNeedles it really is fun to teach them and see how excited they are. I did teach my girls and son when they were that age to sew quilt blocks. It is one of the family quilts to cuddle under in the lounge room!! If you have a speed adjustment on your machine then set it to the slowest setting. Then no matter how much they push the pedal the needle will never go too fast for them. An awesome skill to learn and share xx

    Thank you! Bulky elasticated waistbands are such a problem for mebecause they add so much bulk right over my stomach, where I don't need it. This way, I can have a smooth, flat front without sacrificing comfort. I'm especially grateful for the instructions on how to do the same thing with the skirt I already have. I'm going to be doing that with every skirt I own! I'm 80 and living on a very restricted income, barely making ends meet; I've watched your patreon video and unfortunately I just can't squeeze out $5 a month. However, I can and will drop some money into the coffee mug whenever possible,
