You can see in detail what he's doing though, so I don't see what the problem is?
Nice job - came out looking great. Two questions for you. Did you use andy leather protectant or waterproofing after the polish? And I remember a 'How To" you did on plastic welding. Is there a link to it?

Nice work, glad to see something saved and repaired instead of just replaced! I used a pretty similar method to fix our rolling garbage can that had split... I bent 1.5” 16g finish nails into an S shape and melted them in!
Is there no end to your talent's Del. lil metal tags, melted in and then melty plasticy to repair and make it all back into one piece. very cleaver. would never thought of that myself, have used the boot polish trick before tho. You'd make a great Starfleet engineer lol

Hey! Learned a lot from your soft tail service videos! Thank you so much! I also own a year 2000 FLSTF FatBoy and youtube brought me back to tour channel. Do you have extra videos when it comes to fat boys? :)) Because I’d like to change/upgrade my tank, cuz my fuel gauge is not working. Typical I know. Also if I want to change my headlamp case I’d need to access some cables that are also tucked in below the tank. Eventually I want to upgrade the tank so I can install a more modern fuel gauge with leds and maybe a new speedo and console cover. Please let me know if you have such a video guide of sorts behind the patreon paywall or something. I’d pay for it gladly. Thanks again for all you do / share. Keep it up. Wish you guys the best. Yo, Del, you gotta give an explanation on exactly how you did that. That was one of the coolest things I've ever seen on how to fix busted leather. Please tell us step by step.
Hi mate, I have two other videos on plastic welding in the playlists... and covered plastic welding in great depth and detail in both of those videos... so I thought pretty much I had covered it in the past, but it seems, as those videos are a little old now, people aren't watching anything but the latest video, which is cool, so perhaps I will make a simple skills on this method of plastic repair to bring it up to date, as a few have asked...
They look great Del. a real find. Plastic welding is great saves a lot of money.

Ha ha, well its the same principle i guess... you feed the tip in and out all along the crack to melt the two halves together, then add filler material.... same as Tig welding but with plastic.. it was even TIG wire i was melthing in as stitches to re-enfource the repair..!

Not in 100 years would it have occurred to me to plastic weld with a soldering iron and a zip strip. For that and the melted-in wire reinforcement, I am much obliged, sir. Neither of our Harleys need such attention st the moment, but it’s only a matter of time, is it not?

Sorry Bill.. the camera developed a fault and stopped recording sound for pretty much all of this footage.. i had noo choice but to salvage the image file and use the music to make it watchable... made it clear onscreen at 00:23 !
How can I get the motor oil off my leather saddlebags??

Hi mate.. they are genuine Harley items from 1992, made from 4mm thick harness leather, really soft and supple, responded really well to the polish too.. probably cost about £500 when they were new.. chuffed to have found them.!
what a new tin.. couldn't you find the dried up one under the kitchen sink, it might have been the same age as the bags. they look great my friend
Hey Tony....yeah i know, i even melted the last crumb out of the old tin for my boots in the week... so had to relent and buy some new stuff....!!!
You have the patience of Job, the saddlebags came up really well. Have you thought about a bit of dubbing, it'll soften & waterproof (maybe for the snakeskin) Fatboy looks good with them on --have a great weekend
Thakns Geoff... the boot polish made a great job of them, i have lots of 'products' ive tried over the years...neatsfoot oil, Renapur balsum, nikwax etc etc...but i still find just plain olf black boot polish makes a great finish to them..!
Depending on the use you IME you should be careful with dubbin as it's quite sticky and will clog the pores of the leather. It is good for waterproofing though. Personally on old leather I'd have used some sort of nourisher first as an extra conditioner before polish - ideally left over night somewhere warmish (not hot).
Polish will obviously help condition as well and the leather looked in VGC without cracks, so it might not have needed it.
Got to say the plastic brazing was amazing!
They suit the bike perfect and not too wide like some bags. Love the panels on them too, snakeskin? :)

Different take on it with this one Del. Cracking job there with the saddlebags. One question, did you buff the polish off after a while? or did ai just miss it. ha. That tune was sweet as well. Cheers mate.
Thanks buddy, I actually put 3 coats of the polish on, and the dry old leather, just breathed it in... only on the 4th coat did it sit on top a little, so once they were mounted on the bike, I actually gave them a buff up with the cloth... and the music is a new selection from a kind musician who just makes it for his own enjoyment ... !

Good job on the bags, they look new. Been watching your vids for a couple of years now.
I am planning on buying my first motorcycle and I want this to be a 883. Preferably a 883R (2004-up). Is there anything I should be aware of in regards to known problems with the 883Rs? I am not into racing and just want the bike because of the sound and looks. Other than your vid explaining what to look for when buying a used motorcycle any input regarding things to look out for is appreciated.

You are right there mate, open environment too as it gives off some pretty nasty poisons!
Nice work Del! How much watts is your soldering iron - I get good results with 40ty but I think it's a bit hotter than needed for plastics... One pice of advice - you could use some hand cream to recondition the leather before shoe polish - it gets softer and holds better in wet weather... On the other hand - who drives a Harley in the rain :d
I DRIVE A HARLEY IN THE RAIN ill have you know... i dont own a car so no choice..!!! and yeah, vasaline, even baby oil wiped over before the polish makes the leather shinier...but iwanted to feed lots in bone dry as they are 24 years old and very dried out... great now, and Mr Sheen brings them up like new..

Exactly that mate, I chose not to explain it in detail, as I've already covered it in two videos before, but it seems many people don't watch the older stuff, so maybe I will do a refresher simple skills on it another time!

Hey Willie, it took me ages to find them small enough.. they are the same model as the bags on the T2 bike....just have the Ealskin inserts.. an other bag i saw was just massive and made the bike look like a Heritage...

no way heating in little metal clips and melting plastic over it!..
Way....! Use TIG welding wire, cos it conducts heat brilliantly, figure 8 is the best shape, as straight stiches can pull out, press the soldering iron on them, and as the plastic back boards are 5mm thick, they melt right inside, and form a perfect endo-skeleton... you don't really need to melt plastic over the top, but it does give a little extra strength!

+Moonfleet41 Never thought of using tig wire... I usually cut n bend lots of heavy duty paper clips or staples into the right shape, then heat em with a torch till I can drop one on n press it in!
+Blakehx I never even knew about this repair method, but its proper cool.
Naah, thick paper clips are spiringy.. Tig wire is soft and bendy, and you're wasting your time preheating them, just drop them over the crack cold, and press them with the soldering iron, they pick up the heat and burn right in no trouble.. then beef up over the top with some more plastic both sides..
