    Hey Del, I realise this is a old video: but it just happened to come up when I watched your latest release.
    I used to use hairspray to stick my grips on. Most of us would’ve followed this procedure for years. Many years.
    I did too on my FLSTN.
    In December 2020 I moved the bike out of my garage ( gotta move the car first- bikes are all lined up on my side of the garage) and went to park it across the slope of my downhill driveway. Sidestand on downhill side.
    My normal practice - in gear and front wheel blocked against my brick mailbox. This is my procedure with whatever bike I take for a ride. The bike cannot move. Forward motion denied by mailbox and first gear. Tipping downhill prevented by sidestand.
    The left hand grip slid off in my hand as I turned the bars to the right and I couldn’t hold the bike up- went down on the LHS. No damage due to the footboards.
    Ever tried to lift a Harley Me either. But I did.
    Hurt my back severely- had an operation on it 12 months ago and have slowly re-learned to walk and not limp. Haven’t ridden since- but very close now.
    The Hairspray worked for a few years, but gave way instantaneously.
    I only use adhesive now.

      @Moonfleet41  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blimey Nick, long story mate, but i get what you're saying, the grip from the glue isn't only to blame though, after all, 350kg bike, and hauling it about by that grip.. i use Renthal grip glue adhesive these days since i found the same as you.. after a while it would break loose and move about... but on pretty much any other bike with normal weight, its still fine.. Get well soon mate, hope you're back to full fitness soon.. Del.

      Nice on e buddy... glad to hear it.. .and you may not realise, but you just saved yourself at least £100 .. if you'd taken it to the HD dealer, they would charge at least one hour's labour, and here that is between £85 and £95 a hour PLUS VAT... not only does that make it a pretty expensive pair of grips, but you also learned a little about your 48, and that has to be a bonus too aye.?

    I have a 2019 Sportster. I noticed the clutch switch that you showed on the left hand controls, and I'm wondering exactly what it does. I could not find an explanation of it in my owner's manual or my service manual... I assume it's obviously there to tell the bike whether the clutch lever is pulled in or not, but for what reason? to prevent it from starting under certain conditions? currently, my bike is able to start whether or not i have the lever pulled in, so I'm not sure that's it.

    Delboy, What extra is involved to change out the bars with the wiring internal of the bars? Great Video BTW.. Cheers Greg

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      HI Greg, this video is about changing grips, but if you're actually changing your bars, then you need to unplug the wiring from the switch blocks, thread it back through the bars, and in through the new bars... some people use very thin chain to pull the wiring through as it's slinky and finds it's own way through under gravity, other people use MIG wire, or just whatever works... once it's all threaded through your new bars then wire them up, re-connect everything and fit the furniture!

    • @Moonfleet41

      Hi buddy, as Harley grips are closed on the end, due to having no bar weights, then sometimes we accidentally push the twist grip side too far on to the bar, and the rubber end of the grip rubs on the handlebar, stopping it snapping back... just try loosening off the switch block, and ease it 1/16th of an inch outwards off the bar, and it should snap back nice and crisp... then tighten up! See how that goes and let me know... hope that helps, Del

    Hi. I want to change the stock bars on my 2009 Sportster 1200 Low (XL1200L) but want to keep the HD heated grips. The bike has a HD alarm system on it. It's got a fob but with key ignition (not keyless - so the older type of fob ... pre-2014?). I'm worried about setting off the alarm while working on it (removing the switch housings, break/clutch levers, heated grips, and bars ... and putting on the new bars, switch housings, levers, and heated grips). I've watched many videos on changing bars and/or grips, etc., on HDs and none of them say anything about the alarm system. Just wondering if you would know anything about it. Perhaps you cover this in one of your MANY videos !? Any info/suggestions you have would be really appreciated.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bernard.. OK, to illuminate the alarm to you can safely work on the bike and it won't go off, there's a simple procedure laid out in your service manual... Switch on the ignition as if you're about to start the engine...then pull the main fuse out.. this will kill the alarm and cut the power at the same time... when you're done fitting your new bars.. with the ignition key still on the ON position, slot the big main fuse back in, then switch the ignition off.. I made a video many years ago for battery change and its the same procedure, it's covered here from 5.00 minutes onwards mate.. th-cam.com/video/4ampIukIltU/w-d-xo.html

      The bike should obviously have a flasher relay as standard for the old indicators, if they're not LED and the bulbs are the same size, then it should flash as before- have you connected everything up correctly and have you checked the standard relay to see if it's sticking?? erm on my brake cleaner it says do not use on rubber, is the brake cleaner you use rubber safe?

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +AARON GALEA Erm, if you look closely, it's WD40 Brake Cleaner, and erm, do you not find rubber parts in brake calipers, and erm, brake cleaner is also carb cleaner, are there not rubber parts in carbs... so erm, if you think about things for yourself, rather than listen to hearsay, you will erm, build some knowledge of your own...

    • @aarongalea
      @aarongalea 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Moonfleet41 Well rubber which is used in carbs is made to withstand the eroding properties of fuel, just like rubber fuel pipes. I don't think that the rubber on the grips is that type. I built some knowledge of my own, just to let you know by researching a bit and found that brake cleaner damages 'normal' rubber by dissolving it like fuel does

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +AARON GALEA Go do some REAL research in practice Aaron, take a old bar grip, dowse it in brake cleaner, then see what result you get... as i said in the video, it has the effect of softening the surface and making it 'grabby'... this then allows the grip to stick to the bar and not move... it does no permanent damage.... dont just read things buddy, check them out with live experimentation for yourself... i get sick of comments that begin with "well i read somwhere".... tell me your findings and not things you read..!

    Great video, 👍 just fitted some avon grips to an iron xl883n...the control clamps on either side have a slight gap at the front about a mil or so...I can see the throttle cable through it, made sure everything is in the right place tool it apart several times but still ends up the same
    Controls are all working fine not sure if its because the grips are slightly thinker than the stock ones I took off.
    Any help would be appreciated del boy thanks 👍

    @moonfleet41 I have recently had to sell my beloved fat boy. Payments are too high on the young beauty. As well, I find myself wanting to try different bikes.
    I am currently spending about 3-5000$ Canadian on a bike. The ones that have peaked my interested are Honda CBR600RR' as well the Yamaha R6 and R1. Have you had any experience with these bikes Del? Could you share any info or opinions you have?
    Thanks a ton mate. Love the channel.

    use WD-40 to get them off or take your air hose and blow up in it and it will expand it and it will slide off.

    I have been watching hundreds of you tube videos about HD maintenance. Yours are LOADED with so much valuable info. Saved me time with a few items already! i.e. lubing the front master cylinder plunger! Saved me from buying another brake switch and ending up with the same issue! The 27 torx vs the 25is spot on too.

    Have watched several videos on this topic and this one is by far and away the best one. You, sir, are a great teacher. One thing I was wondering about is that I read somewhere that the break fluid housing should be kept upright when off the bars so as to avoid introducing air into the break line and having to drain it. Anything to that?

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your kind words Bernard, With the fluid rez, as long as when you re-install it, you let it sit for a few hours or over night, any air will naturally find it's way to the top and be fine.. ive never had a problem with it myself.

    Great videos as always can you tell me if this can be done without removing the brake/clutch perch? Seems like removing it might make more risk in punching the cables and creating electrical problems... Also is it necessary to place a cardboard to protect the brake. Light switch?

    • @AndresCuervoArt
      @AndresCuervoArt 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also how to adjust the throttle if you need to remove the cables or adjust both of them... Does the bike needs to be with handlebar facing forward? I notice there is a slith difference between full left and full right on both throttle carb end and play

    Maybe you can help me. I changed out everything on the bars and added bar end mirrors. My throttle will no return at all. As soon as I take the top right switch housing off it returns just fine. Put it back on and no screws in it just put in place and the throttle sticks and won't return. Take the top off and it returns just like it should. It's a 2017 harley xg500.

    Mate, I have only just discovered your page. I have a Harley Sporty 48, that has been sitting idle for about 5 years due to medical reasons. You have provided me with detailed info on getting my bike back on the road. ( I've pretty much just spent a whole afternoon watching your post about services etc). To say you have inspired me in an understatement. Keep up the good work !!

      Hi Pete, good to hear from you mate, and sorry to hear about your enforced lay off, I hope you're well and back to fitness now mate. It's good to hear the videos can inspire you to get busy, pretty much everything your bike might need is going to be simple 'housekeeping', after all it's a Harley and they're made out of tree trunks, so there won't be much wrong with it! You're just waking it back up again, and it will thrive on the fresh use and some new miles... enjoy the videos, and feel free to drop us a line here, or private, if you need any secondary tips that the videos don't cover, it'll be a pleasure to help you get back on the road bruv, good luck, Del

    hi Del, just a quick question I think I might know the answer but forgive me for sounding a bit dumb, what is the return cable for, the spring on the cable wheel ( on the carb or throttle body ) pulls the throttle back, is it there as a fail safe incase the spring breaks so the throttle doesn't stick open or is there more to it than that,

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Daz Fowell Hi Daz, you got it dead right mate, it's simply a fail safe, or if the carb spring breaks, so you can manually shut the throttle off... it's been a requirement on bikes for the last 20-odd years... it's also a really handy thing if you break your throttle cable in the middle of nowhere, you can dis-connect the return cable and connect it up to the pull side to get you home!
