You saved my old ps2, respect from Italy ✌🏼

I have the same issue with my ps2 but how can I get rid of the noise inside of my Original ps2?
Because the noise is really annoying and the noise keeps making me upset

Thank you so much its working so good now gta San Andreas here I come thank you again

I just got my PS2 down from the attic after being there for 20 years. To my regret, the disc would not read and would grind like hell. I found your video which saved my PS. Thank you very very much for the video and thorough walkthrough!
Awesome! I love to hear stories of this. Such a joy to bring our old consoles back to life
I wonder if this method lasts a while or it be better to replace the platic piece? Mine it works but sometimes, i feel that grinding noise while playing
Cardboard did the job! Thank you!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
How can I find a small piece of cardboard for my ps2
@@tyreechawkins9904 just find some off a food box or shipping box and follow my video. You can do this.
Mine has the same problem with the rail plastic piece being loose making the same rattling sound. Gonna fix it with your video!
Let me know how it goes. Thanks for watching!
I have Dej Jam Fight for Ny and Nba Live 08 and they were just working last week but not all of sudden neither will not load at all. My PS2 make little grinding noises even wen I'm playing but not all the time just very sudden every now and then ..... Would this work???! And also Ive seen more scratches than usual. Is the grinding little noise causing that ?
Sounds the same but won't know for sure until you take it apart.
Is it the slim or fat one?
My PS2 reads all games perfectly, but it rattles due to poor contact of the micro switch for the end position of the laser unit.
Do you know where I can get the micro switch as spare part?
Thank you in advance.
Probably eBay
Hi, the bit where you put cardboard under came right out, how can I plug this back in?
Just do the same thing again and make sure it's pinched so it won't come out
It worked for me! Thank you so much! But unfortunatly the reader is bad. It's only playing ps1 games.
Another laser revived, praise from Poland
Awesome! All praise to God! Thanks for watching!

Hello @Because Stuff Breaks with Justin Peters , after watching the video I did the same, and after cleaning the laser, my PS2 won't spin the discs or read them anymore, when I insert the disc, the laser moves and turns half a circle and nothing happens anymore, can you tell me where I went wrong?
Make sure all your ribbon cables and wire bundles for the drive are filly seated and not loose.
@@becausestuffbreaks Ok, I'll try it, I hope that's the only problem, that I didn't do more damage... btw great video!

1:54 the middle screw on the bottom of the console would have a sticker on it if the console has not been taken apart before.
Good catch. Thanks for the info
Where are you located at
Thats for slim model only, the fat has it behind as mine.. thats why i didnt open it yet
@@Eazye442 I could've sworn I had a fat one where the sticker was present.

Good thing you have this video to refer to
how did you fix the disc trey grinding when ejecting?

Hey great video, knew exactly what to do when I opened mine up. I cleaned, lubed, replaced the white teeth part with a new one and cleaned the lenses but it still makes the noise and won’t read discs. Any suggestions?
Did you try the trick I used in this video
I did but I’m guessing my shim wasn’t the right size. The laser slides good when the cover is off but when I put it all back together it makes the noise immediately.
Hmm. I wonder why it only does it with the cover on. Maybe the shim is pushing that needle up too far and it's catching the top of the cover?
@@becausestuffbreaksI just tried it without the shim, slides amazingly well with new teeth part but same result won’t work after putting it back together.
That's odd. Something has to be hanging it up. Just need to find why it's catching
my ps2 doesn't even show the reading disk screen, it goes to the browser and system configuration screen
Same here. I can click on browser to initiate the disc reading tho. But then I’m getting the disc read error and a scraping noise coming from the disc tray as it spins. It not quite as grindy-sounding as it is in the video.
Let me know if you find your problem. I assume it doesn't know you put a disc in. Try cleaning the laser lense with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol.
thank you!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
I have my PS2 fat using an OPL to load games. The problem is, the unit itself making some grinding noise only just a second. Im not even using a disc on it. What is problem of my PS2 please help.
I wonder if it's sensing a disc or that the trey is not closed. Have you taken it apart and blown out all the dust and cleaned the laser lense?
@@becausestuffbreaks Its better to disconnect the ribbon cable on the lens itself since im not using any disc anymore. Currently using OPL to load my all games.
@@hanzmaravillas6524 that might be why it does a grind
my disc tray wont come out when i removed the covef
Your ribbon cable for the eject button may have broken or come unplugged
Still no luck for mine. I don't know what else to do besides look for a new laser assembly. Looks like it's the plastic part not the gear but I don't know where to find one except maybe eBay? I can manually move the laser up and down by hand turning the gear but as soon as I press the power button the gear goes all way to center of disc drive makes the grinding sound and then won't go up.
I don't even understand how this broke as I just bought the thing and it was working fine for one day. I tore the PS2 down last night to replace the watch battery as that was dead and I want to keep time set. Put it all back together and put a disc in which loaded but then started grinding noise and disc not spinning. Just my luck.
That sucks. Thanks for watching!
@@becausestuffbreaks Well good news is that I fixed it without spending money on anything. Turned out a ribbon cable inside came out but I only figured that out from another video. I took mine apart and sure enough that was the issue. Just slid it back in and so far it's working again.
@@darkhalf9134 awesome! Thanks for watching!
@@darkhalf9134 same thing is happening to mine, tried this exact same fix and no luck so far, do you mind telling me which ribbon cable was it?
I want to try this but idk if the grease I have is correct. I've got lithium for lawn trimmers and silicone for airport guns. Are either of those ok?
The lithium should be fine. I've tried silicone before and for some odd reason it gummed up it up.

Something is wrong with my PS2...
It's a 50004 version but in "System Information" screen it says it's a 50003. 😑
What does it mean? Is it normal? I'm so confused.
If someone has the same problem I would like to know what the heck is wrong with it!
Just took mines apart and there is no ribbon cable at all that connects to top part. ??? 😂 it turns on just making the clicking noise not reading disk. Should i stop now? Is the ribbon cabble needed?
Google is telling me ribbon cable is for the power of the ps2. Yet mine turns on. Literally no cable at all by power button under lid
Greasing the rails after cleaning did the trick. Your a g!
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
The lithium grease won’t be a problem? I heard it could damage or warp metal or plastic.
I guess that's possible. What's the alternative?
@@becausestuffbreaks I’m not sure.
@@guyonyoutube6565 I did a little Google research. Lithium grease is not advised for plastic but good for metal. I tried to use silicone grease but it gummed up the bar that the assembly rides on. Maybe I needed to try a different type. For plastic, Google recommends silicone, perfluorinated PFAE, mineral oils, and synthetic hydrocarbons (SHC or PAO)
Gonna try this soon hopefully it works i love my PS2 best console ever
Let me know how it goes. Thanks for watching!
To anyone who has been storing their ps2 in the attic or stashed away for 15 years.. My ps2 was recognizing that the disc was there but was heavily grinding and not loading. But I figured that the gears have been stagnant for so long that perhaps letting them move a bit before committing to opening it up might work. Sure enough if you let the gears run a few times by inserting/ejecting - the gears will loosen and allow you to play. I am still getting some grinding but not as bad as it first was. I am able to play now. However, I could see this wearing out the gears if no action is taken and I use it heavily. Or perhaps the more I use it, the more it'll loosen up. But for those that want a couple hours of nostalgia without opening it all up - let those gears loosen up a bit! However, this video is definitely your safest bet to keep your ps2 running the longest if you're getting grinding noises.
I have this same issue with my slim. My makeshift solution was to position it sideways (don't forget to turn the PS logo :-) ) I guess the weight of the drive itself no longer be applied allowed the motor to move without grinding anymore. After playing with it for a bit that way, I noticed that when I put it back in its horizontal position, it was not grinding half as much and had less trouble recognizing the discs. It could be a harm reduction strategy for your method.
Dude i reseted multiple times and it didnt work. It was grinding when it did work. But there's just nothing after the short boot grind.
I just got a new cable for nothing....zzz
When i first got it,it was a 2nd hand item and i still could play ps1 games. Then it stopped playing ps1 games and stopped reading a number of fake disc. Now i totally can't play it anymore even though it boots up and can access memory card.
idk man i use a usb and it makes the sound when i start it and its freezes a lot in cut scenes what should i do?
Try cleaning the laser lense and disc first. Next would be lubricating gears and tracks.
@@becausestuffbreaks will do thanks for replying
Keep me updated on how it goes.
Games freeze when using a USB stick anyway, use the HDD to store games. The noise will occur on startup either way until it's fixed but if you're not using discs just ignore it
Do you suggeat putting a bit of grease on the disc tray gears its self? The white plastic gears beside the disc drive belt?
That would be fine
This is the most common things that would happen to the fat PS2 and that vibrating sound usually would result in disc damage but everyone says the PS2 slim damages discs worse and I don't believe that
Thanks for watching!
To grease the rods and adding a 3/4mm tick cardboard under the spinning bar did it for me, thanks!!
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
Hi I have a problem with my fat ps2 and I wish you can help me. The problem is It reads discs fine but while playing it makes a loud click noise from time to time! Any reason why?? Thank you so much
Sounds like it's either jumping teeth on the screw gear or something is binding and then breaking free. Might be a good idea to take it apart, clean and lube everything like I did in this video
@@becausestuffbreaks Unfortunately I don’t have alcohol :( is it fine if I use water to clean the screw gear?
@@hal536 yes. You can use soapy water. Just make sure it's all dry before applying any lubricant. You can also use water and a qtip on the laser lense.
@@becausestuffbreaks thank you bro I will give it a try
@@becausestuffbreaks I’ve done exactly like the video but the clicking noise still happens :( could it be possible the laser is on its way out??
did you apply white lithium grease to the metallic spiral part?
also my ps2 doesnt power on after putting it back together any ideas?
Yes I put lithium grease there. The ribbon cable for the power/eject button may have become unplugged or damaged.
@@becausestuffbreaks solved the power issue thank you, but disc drive is still making grinding noise, ill keep cleaning
You may just need to replace the plastic part that rides in the spiral gear
Thanks bro this video helped a lot

I have a ps2 game from hell. It has bringed the death to 3 ps2 consoles for me. Every time I placed the disk. Each of my ps2 would that making that horrible rattling hurring noise, abd no longer being able to read any disks and keep being noisy.
It's such a shame bc I loved that game but i don't want to kill my ps2 console again
Did you buff the disc?
@@becausestuffbreaks nahh I still have it with me, it's the Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets ps2 game. I've boyght another identical game a while back but I think it started to mess up my consoles aswell. Been thinking that maybe the game is just cursed but whta are the chances of two discs causing the exact same problem
Sounds like the game is cursed. You can buy one of the original PS3s that will play PS2 gams and maybe it can handle it better
@@becausestuffbreaks I don't think it would be worth the moneys.. Sucks but eh :/ nothing I can do rly.. I coukd buy yet another copy of the exact same game and try that but i dunno
Is there a way to fix it without taking the console apart?
No
Dumb
Kiss the ps2 and cuddle it maybe it works.😂 Anyway you can try spraying air inside, for me did the trick, but after a month i hear little grinding noise again
After I fixed the grinding noise now it won't read anything. I had to buy a PS2 slim
Reseat all the cable connections and clean your laser lense
@@becausestuffbreaks I cleaned the lens before I took it apart it started to freeze up that's why I took it apart. I fixed the arm that was rattling and it grips the ridged bar good but now nothing reads
Did you check that all your ribbon cables are still seated all the way?
