How I Fixed a Playstation 2 slim that wouldn't read discs | PS2 laser repair

- Playstation 2 slim 79003 doesn't read discs or spin the cd. There is no disc spin. Here's what I did to troubleshoot the problem and fix it.

Thats a 7900x model, those are my favorite model PS2 Slims because the ribbon cable that give power to the laser assembly are held by plastic tabs instead of adhesive so you never have to worry about your games scratching.

I think your fan is in backwards. If I recall, it should be blowing through that heat sink.
I had a look online, there's different versions of the slim, some have fans like this one and other have fans like you say, blowing through the heat sink.
Hello there. I found a similar problem in my PS2 Slim 77004. The disk doesn't spin at all. Do you think it is the same problem? I've done some troubleshooting, because i have another 77004 that works well. I took the cd drive from the ps2 that wasn't spining to the one it was working and it worked! So do you think that the problem is before like the main board? Or it could be the laser like the one in your video?
Great video, may need to do this as mine packed in randomly. Ps2 slim. However I don't even get the start up screen, either complete silence, or if I try again after a while it will make a rattle/grinding noise for 4 seconds and then nothing. Power button is unresponsive, need to switch off from the mains. You reckon it's laser related or PS2 is knackered? Cheers
Sounds like the disk tray is jammed. Have you thought about opening it and taking a look inside?
Nice job! Since you need a new laser replacement , maybe the one removed today can be fixed? Curious as to why it stopped working. Maybe something there on it that is noticeable?
Don't they just wear out over time? It seems such a common problem across all disc based games consoles.
when i play PS2 my go to games are conflict desert storm/conflict desert storm II back to Baghdad..
Had a quick look at the gameplay on YT and it looks good. I had a lot of fun playing a game using a headset and directing different tactical teams in the game using the microphone. 'Red team to alpha point' type of thing. I can't remember the name of the game atm.
I might have a bad laser but im not sure because i play underground2 most of the day no problem but i play san andreas but it glitches bad i check the disc & is not scratch its in good condition but after a few hours starts to do that im not sure if its the laser because the center piece spins,tape also works doesnt have contact with disc thats why my concern its the laser but im confuse do to the fact with underground it works really good🫤any advised?
They only thing I can think of is to try a different copy of the game you want to play on. If multiple games are not working, it's probably the laser.
I have a PS2 slim 90000 it reads cd games but the regular ps2(dvd based) games it goes to the red screen of death, the lens is spotless, games are in mint condition, I NEED HELP TO UNLOCK MY CHILDHOOD AGAIN! Any suggestions out there

Can I do this on PS2 model-90004?
I went to Aliexpress and searched for PS2 slim lasers. I found this
"SPU-3170 Laser Lens with Deck SPU3170 For PS2 Slim Game Console For SCPH-7500X SCPH-7700X SCPH-7900X SCPH-9000X Dropship"
which suggests to me the 9000x model uses the same laser as the 7xxxx listed in the same advert.
So I can't say for sure, but it looks like you can.

Because I have three new PS2 90004s, but one of them had a lens that did not work, and I saw that the lens wire was dry and cut, so I thought that the lens that was in that PS2(1) was good and would work well, so I took the lens and put it in the PS2(2) But when I wanted to turn on the PS2 (2), the lens did not work and did not move, so I replaced it with a used one, but it did not work 😁 and I took that lens and put it in the PS2 (3), I turned on the PS2 (3) but the lens did not work and Or is it moving 😁 Then I made sure that it was really not good, so I put back the lenses of the PS2(1) and PS2(2) but when I turned them on their lenses did not move and here I realized that I made my misfortune three misfortunes🤣😁🤣

I bought a silver PS2 slim off of Facebook marketplace “tested and working” and no disc spin, laser and motor don’t work. I checked the switches with the lid off and the ribbon cables seem fine. Not sure how the whole laser assembly just doesn’t work
I believe the laser switches on, looks for a disc before there's any disc spin. So if the laser is faulty, there's no disc spin. With the lid off, do you see the laser itself move up and down attempting to disc, when you press both lid switches?
@@PhilipBryden I get nothing from the laser. It doesn’t turn on and it doesn’t move up and down on its rail. I took it off the motherboard and cleaned all connections, cleaned the laser with alcohol and reapplied white lithium grease to the rails of the sensor and still nothing. I found someone selling the whole laser assembly on eBay so I’m going to give that a try when it comes in.

@@bhartikurolya6754 I still have that PS2 and swapped a brand new laser and it does the same thing so I know it’s not the laser but something else. I’ve put that on pause for the time being
