I have watched exactly one gazillion painting videos, and this is the first time I’ve heard of “damp dry brushing.” And I always get that chalky look, so this was 100% brilliant. Thanks! 👍👏😁

Yea I only heard about this the other day to. Don't use kitchen towels as they suck the moisture out, use a textured non absorbing surface that removes but don't dry out the paint. 6 years I've been watching hobby vids on here.

There's a million videos about speed painting out there... This is the first one that actually succeed at explaining it, especially to beginners.
And yes, some of my favorite youtubers have videos about this issue but non of them have come close to Luke, on how to deliver the information in such a relatable and clear way.

HUGE fan of the Black Crag minis!
Also... consider Blue Sky Minis on Patreon, which also makes amazing orcs that you can mix and match with these guys.
AND... PuppetsWar, my new favorite mini Patreon. This month, and for February, they have some JAW DROPPING new orcs in their mix. They're freaking stunning.
And yeah, everything on all 3 of these are modular and could come together into some just stupid cool orc squads.
I mean, I have a box of GW boys and a box of nobs *AND* THE DAMN KILL TEAM KOMMANDO GUYS sitting here unpainted and I'm like... yeah man... I think I'm going to ignore those, these online models are SO much better!

  • @willm59

My favorite video on this channel so far. Really love the down to earth real talk and the mini-painting psychology behind it too. Jumping to bases after being burnt out on the dull base coating was brilliant. Lots of these techniques I already use so great to see the reinforcement of best practices. Also, I'm just learning to use the airbrush and it's already a game changer. Another thing you might want to consider when speed painting is whether the games are being done virtually vs in-person. I'm doing all my games virtual from now on using Vorpal Board and considering the level of detail players will see in the video, speed painting is a much better option for me. It allows me to print and paint more of the patreon / tribes memberships and get them into the campaign instead of sitting on the shelf or in a folder in my vast STL library. Again, thanks for this. More like this in the future! :) P.S. I do have my speed paints on pre-order though lol

  • @D00M3R_MAVS
    @D00M3R_MAVS 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I don't own an air brush yet.
At the moment I'm getting into using contrast as a base, this picks out a lot of what needs to be done.
I then use the artis opus dry brush techniques to build up the lighter colours and then mixed down contrasts/shades/washes/inks to glaze into dark/shadows.
I will then edge highlight a bit if needed. It probably isn't speed painting exactly, but it gets results that I am very happy with in decent time.
I feel like combining many techniques is the way to go. Not every mini can be done the same way, and the same for different colours, too (like painting black is completely different to colours)
I do like to start from black and stipple colour on top if I want a more weathered look though. This is great for my red bolter casings on my Black Templar, as I like them to look very weathered.
I used to do the same thing with washes/shade paints before. I find the Contrast paints are just an evolution of this.
I still use the shade paints as well though (especially the sepia one from GW, it's amazing for Nurgle stuff)

  • @jimmyodinson9841
    @jimmyodinson9841 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I totally agree, I can happily build a load of minis but only seem to sit and paint if I know I need them for an upcoming gaming session. Just like the Nurgle stuff I have on my bench now that I need in two weeks time LOL

i love these videos. myself, it took awhile to get to the point maybe... 2 years? but i airbrush a base coat, hand detail, oil washes and liners, and can bust out 1k points in a few days if i get on top of it and that's with a day job. this month ill be painting up 1k each for my 3 older kids and the steps are pretty easy once you make decisions. spray base, do single color details that are harder to reach/darker and harder to touch up first, do basically all your details, then touchups, liners, washes and viola. if you aren't going for showroom quality you can get really good solid results that look better through army consistency if you batch like this. it takes a mindset of having already chosen colors, what parts are what etc, but if you do all that before hand you just steam through. keep up the content!

Great to see ya back after the holidays. It's amazing to see you hammer out an army for an event... our club is closed down AGAIN due to high covid numbers... and I paint more as a form of meditation than for an event. Contrasts are a great tool in the box as well and I can't wait to try out speed paints but up next on the "meh, why not try at least" list is oil washes... bought them today.
But I love your base ready range... used it for my regiments khemri army and it's been catching on with other club members too.
Cheers and take care of ya!

Great advice. It can be easy to be overwhelmed by a project - the boxes of started and never finished (or never even started) figures I have stashed are mute testimony to my own failure in that regard.Late last year I started a French and Indian War project and doing 12-16 figures at a time, using some of the same batch painting techniques, along with switching up the units (one week Rangers, next week Woodland Indians, next week French Marines, etc) helps keep me motivated as it isnt an ocean of the same colour mocking me all at once. :-) Cheers!

Great video Luke! I've been trying to get 10 miniatures painted to complete a dark age army in time for a game at my local club. Trouble is where I paint isn't very good as its depends on the weather. Its a brick shed at the side of the house and the little heater in there makes too much noise lol, its more a distraction than a help tbh. I layer up and manage maybe an hour an hour and a half before I need to come back inside to warm up lol

I think the main thing is to choose the models which do not have to many details... I just finished two units of highly detailed models, I got so burned out by them, and I didn't try to be perfect or anything, it was just mostly one coat of contrast or ink, just sheer amount of details forced me to be careful, precise and I couldn't speed up anything to much... Also army with smaller mini count is better, that is why now I'm kind of looking to try and build Ogres for KOW rather then Salamanders... :P

Army looks great. Inside Hull wargaming looks great. The rest of Hull always reminds me of necromunda only dirtier.

Hi Luke, thanks for the video, tips and techniques always appreciated! Can I ask what glue you use to secure the bark to the base as it looks like some form of gorrila glue at a glance, just wondered if you could clarify please?

Man, I could spend twelve weeks on an army and it wouldn't look that good! But I suspect you're on a dangerous slope now - soon you'll have more armies than shelf space!

Your getting wise in your old age, I fully agree or to quote Sam Gamgee’s gaffer ‘it’s the jobs that ain’t started that takes the longest’.
I still use your recipe for air brush thinners and cleaner, have you come up with one for contrast paints yet?

Looks very nice I try my best to do the assembly line to get an army done as I really hate painting so if I can get it out the way fast I try too.
Whats the LotR event your going to?

Awesome looking army, and YAY to Lord of the rings! Know what army you're going to be taking, and will it be official models or 30 prints/proxies.
It's my main game and I'm WAY into the custom army/proxies lately, so can't wait to see what you do

Nice, positive vid, the smile when you said painting two armies in January says it all. Did you get it done?
