      @@brionguthrie2061 There are a lot of models where slap-chop just doesn't really work. You need something with texture for both the dry brushing and contrast stages. Anything with flat areas just doesn't work (Knights, Tanks, a lot of Space Marine stuff). Also anything with a ton of tiny details (AdMech, GSC, Dark Eldar etc) is also kind of a nightmare because you can't clean up mistakes very well, and I imagine that if you're doing DnD heroes you will fall into this catagory aswell.
      It mostly works on normal sized monsters (no titan scale) and anything with fur. I done my entire Tyranid army with it and it looks great with fairly little effort, and I was pumping out my Zombicide zombies at a rate of 9 Zombies every 2h30m. For something like orks it can work very well too, especially more tribal style orks.

    As a newb, I stumbled across slapchop at a good time. I hated most of the half dozen minis I painted and I looked at my mini-pile of shame (still small) and wanted to quit. It simply was not clicking for me. Then I saw the infamous slapchop video and thought I should give it a try. I appreciated the results, so haven't quit. Slapchop seems like a nice entry point for folks like me who are are at the early stages of brush skill development and who might get frustrated quickly by a steep learning curve. .Who knows? Maybe sometime I'll graduate to suck kut.

    • @luketfer
      @luketfer ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Yeah It seems like this is an 'advanced' version of Slapchop, Slapchop is designed to get miniatures good enough to go on the tabletop and play a game, especially with a horde army, not every model has to be a masterpiece that took you 8 hours because painting a mob of Orks like that is going to send you mad...which I think is something a lot of these youtube miniature painters forget...they've been doing it for years, they have already mastered most of these techniques and not only that but painting is their part of the hobby, they rarely, if ever, sit down and play the actual game.

    • @maverickman6486
      @maverickman6486 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Sorry, I've already forgot what slapchop is supposed to be except for a type of wash with some extra technique. But also don't forget about dry brushing in in various ways too. Washes and drybushing are perfect skills to learn when beginning to paint. Also try switching up which skill to use first: Drybush then wash or Wash then Drybush.
      Who knows, eventually, you too will be able to rename a combination of skills too :)

    • @GreenBlueWalkthrough
      @GreenBlueWalkthrough ปีที่แล้ว +1

      By far the best explanation of what slop chop is... Which I to have bad brush skills and am 13 hours into a single 40mm tank because I keep making mistake... But I would not trade my no name 3 stage no high light wash or speed paint methiod for the world... Even if itt means what little paint I put on a model needs to be perfect to look good up close... Although it's fine a table distance.

    • @ColonelSandersLite
      @ColonelSandersLite ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@maverickman6486 Slapchop is pretty much just - do a grisaille (just fancy talk for grey scale) with some combination of zenithal highlighting, overbrushing and drybrushing then glaze in your color. Optionally, pick out details. Done. Just a silly name for an old technique but, tbh, that's cool by me.
      IMO, The big problem with the technique is that it really screws up saturation and vibrancy. If you want something to be highly saturated or vibrant, you have to glaze repeatedly and you will lose the grisaille's value scale altogether. Either that or you just paint opaquely and preserve the value scale manually.
      This is not always a problem, but in some situations, it really is. That being said, this video is exactly how you solve that problem. Instead of doing a true grisaille, do your value sketch in color. TBH though, he probably could have picked a more vibrant scheme than he did to really show the strength of the technique. As it is, her skin tone and hair are so desaturated that he probably could have just gone with a grisaille and it would have ended up in the exact same place and it would have saved some effort on the plinth she's standing on.

      @@kristophermelin7160 Now that is just going one step too far, sir. No reason to stop being civilized.
      Nah, honestly, my first D&D minis didn't even have a base rim at all because I'd just slap em on a piece of cork that had one of those clear chip bases underneath. Didn't really like the rimmed bases at first. They did grow on me eventually and now I do use them both for 40k and my D&D stuff, but I still like how some of my early minis feel more like tiny dioramas.

      I do something similar for my metallics. Basecoat in whatever color you want to shimmer through, then just drybrush on some metallic midtones and pick out details and a few spots to highlight (with however many additional weathering steps later, as required). Very fast and it looks amazing. Painted an entire chaos knight fairly quickly with this method, and I am VERY happy I did.

    have to say, this video really highlights one of the reasons why i love your videos the most out of all the mini painters out there on YT... you are always experimenting and sharing that process with us, the people desperately trying to improve our own styles. you don't say "this is how you do it.", you always say, "let me show you a new method you might want to play with, here's the results i got so you can see."

    I noticed that the problem with transparent painting over zenithal highlight with just black/grey/white is dead shadows and potentially washed out highlights. My generic solution is going dark brown over the black primer then using an ivory for zenithal highlighting.
    Using specific colors for shadows and highlights is definitely the way to go if you just painting single miniature with contrast paint. Alternatively, you can spend the time to paint the model using layers. Which does look better, its true.

    I have a question to the rescaling of the prints. I have the free files from White Wolf Tavern and they are very nice. I use Lycee to rescale them to a bigger scale and then i recalculate the supports. But what do you to to adjust the tip sizes of the supports? Arent they way too flimsy for the bigger model? I always double check all the supports and make the most important ones a lot bigger at the tip to avoid fails. But that obviously takes time. Or is there an option to also automatically adjust the tip sizes with recalculationg the supports after scaling? Would appreciate any feedback from you guys. Thanks!

    I tried something like this with dry brushing using dark purple and blue and lighter blue as the three stages of low and high lights. Then added colors over them in glazes, not using just speed paint or contrast paint, but also using other tones with the mediums too. This got some really nice tones, deep colors and shadows that I was only getting as black and white, so i do appreciate the use of colors as the base tone here, and the overall method seems to be a more sophisticated version of the Slap chop, but Slap chopping is really a quick army method, where as AP Speed paints, contrast paints, Vallejo's new Xpress paints can be used as intended for speed, or as glazes and washes for artists who have the knowledge and experience.

    Hi Ninjon, I see on your website you recommend Golden HFA Titan Buff for zenithal. Do you by chance have a video where you demonstrate zenithal priming with it? Thanks!

    • @Ninjon
      @Ninjon  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hmmm, it’s used in at least a handful of videos, although I can’t recall which off the top of my head! It’s used just like any other ink or paint. The key is it needs next to no dilution. Just put a bit of airbrush flow improver into the cup, and then the paint. About 1 part flow improver to 4 parts paint. Hope this helps!

    My takeaway from this is that speed painting is basically anything quicker than a months-long golden demon entry. Because damn man, a lot of stuff went into that, from tools to techniques to trim. But as you say, whatever let's just paint

      hehe, exactly my thoughts - for me, this is far away from speedpainting (and as a noob, everything takes longer anyway)

      I think this sort of loses the appeal of slapchop. It's to just get your armies painted decently for a tournament fast. It also needs an air brush - the beauty of slapchop is you can do it with cheapo dome drybrushes. Here in Canada a decent (ie, not top end) air brush, compressor + tank, and extraction booth & respirator is like $700 CAD after tax but a dome brush is like $3 and I can use the paints I already have. No one is bringing their airbrush equipment to the hotel a few days before a tournament but you can definitely bring a drybrush and some paint.

    Thanks @Ninjon for this video. I was kinda in a "painting paralysis" because I wanted my models to look "perfect" or as good as could be, which made me think a LOT aber which technique to use, color schemes, etc. And it killed my mood to paint and try things out. After watching your vid I just started again and looked where I would end up and what can I say? The fun came back and so did the results. It looked cool and was fun again! Thanks to "such kut" the BEST technique there is, as it is YOUR own technique.

    Are you doing the hot water after print before removing supports? If you put the model in almost boiling water after you print it the supports come off so nice hardly ever any support marks.

    Being an inexperienced painter when the whole "slap chop" fad was going on I was like man, I've really got to see what this is about. After watching a couple of videos aside from the dry brushing everything else was exactly what I was already doing when I needed to speed paint a large group of the same minis. Zenithal highlighting with my primer, then covering with homemade contrast paints. Makes for a quick paint job when you have a ton of minis from a board game you're just trying to get on the table without everything being uniform grey.

    Imo the "revolutionary" part of the slap chop technique is to do progressive drybrushing as part of the underpainting/zenithal which makes contrast paints even more effective.
    However, painting with primarily underpainting and washes is something that has been around a long time. I remember seeing a video maybe 10 years ago that recommended it for zombie skin.

    This video was worth it alone for how you painted the metallics - I don't think I'm at a level where I can do a convincing NMM and I've really been struggling for an intermediate step to create some variety in my metallics. Painting in a dark brown and then hitting the brightest surfaces with the actual gold (or grey and then silver perhaps?) looks awesome and I think it's exactly what I've been looking for.

    I have my own method: Shake and Bake.
    The shake step is: you shake your paints so they mix up real good. Then you paint the mini.
    Then the bake part: you let the paint cure and dry.
    Voila! A simple two step process to paint your minis.

    Great video, and I will certainly try these techniques. I come from the historical mini painting hobby which is very similar to Warhammer in that we want to get big painted armies to the table with maximum appeal with little effort. However ideas such as "Zenithal" are still pretty new. I had to search for that term. With that understanding under my belt, I really enjoyed the video and look forward to using the technique.

    when i was ten year old WAY BACK in 1983 i painted my first miniature, it was from Call of Cthulu , my painting style has never changed over the years other than i got better at it. While everyone moved over to get getting glazing skills I stayed with my painting style. I'm glad to learn you all finally caught up, you lot might call it SlapChop, i just call it mini painting, i never understood why people spend 8 hours on a game mini. 90 minis max for an above average standard.
