Due to the lack of disposable income right now I've been rescuing mini's from my awful painting style in the early 90's, there's a marked improvement which I'm attributing to watching your channel.
6 pints of blood and a couple ounces of semen (donated at proper facilities, ya cant just go asking people on the street) would land you enough dough to get into 3d printing then you can have all the new minis to your hearts content.
@jc7997aj make sure it's your own blood donated over an extended time-frame. Those plasma clinic people are a bunch of narcs! You'd think they'd appreciate a 7 gallon donation!
This honestly helps. Giving permission to just paint a thing, and for it not to be a Golden Demon award winner is a thing I sometimes just need to hear.
I know exactly what you mean. The videos that result in awesomely painted miniatures are a great inspiration but they don't help when all you want to do is just relax and paint a bit.
Of all the mini painters I watch on TH-cam, you are probably my favourite. I really like your perspective of improving your skills, getting good looking models, but not sweating the small stuff nobody pays attention to anyway. 13 days since I painted a mini. Got a bit burnt out painting, so have been building terrain. I find it a good way to recharge when I get bored of painting minis.
This style you picked up, sharing from the last one you painted the Ninja rabbit, is really neat. Going for shades and then lightning up and adding color as you go. Keeps the model cohesive and not as much lost time picking base colors. Well done!
I've watched many painting videos before but for whatever reason this one really resonates with me. Very cool technique of color shading and then hitting the highlights. And the tip of how many layers to apply and where is very informative. My last model painted was last night.
My last mini painted was a few days ago! Honestly, your videos and your attitude is what got me back in to mini painting the past few months. I was too scared to get started because i wasn't going to be good at it, but your attitude of "just paint a mini" no matter how good or bad it is, just to get the time in and enjoy the process, is what pushed me to actually start and keep on going. thank you so so much for pushing me to do it
I painted my last Mini about 36 years ago (Battletech) 😂 I just bought a SLA-Printer and now I’ve got tons of printed stuff … that looks really cool, but definitely will look cooler painted. I really have to admit, you‘ve got a way to motivate people to try painting on their own 👍 … and if it will come out awful, at least now I‘ve got one to blame on 😜😂
Every one of my models gets a new technique or combination of techniques. Whether its paints, brushes, airbrush style, or basing. You're an inspiration friend.
I do this too. Unfortunately, it drives me mad when I do it with squads/units because I always know what technique goes with which mini. No one else does...but I do. It's my annoying problem.
I’m very happy to say that it’s only a few days since I last painted. I’ve been working on some Wood Elves for MESBG and thanks to the weather being dreadful on the weekend my wife and I got to sit at the kitchen table and hobby instead of being outside doing all the work on the house we should have been doing. Thanks for the videos, John. I really enjoy your take on this hobby. Cheers.
I haven’t painted in over 2 years. I currently live vicariously through you and my other rust belt bois, miniac, samlenz, uncle atom, and I thank you all dearly for it. 💛
Last mini I finished was 3 weeks ago. I paint for fun but only have time in some weekends so sometimes they are standing there waiting on the table for weeks. Love your channel and motivational speeches! Thanks!
I took a two year break from painting due to my anxiety and fear of failure around painting mini's but I just recently started painting again last week. Watching videos like this can be helpful but I need to accept that I'm still new to the hobby and I'm obviously going to make a ton of mistakes as I learn. Thanks for the video.
all those mistakes are actually new techniques for your tool box. sounds facetious but it's true. Another tip is to paint your favourite mini's, don't wait until you're "good" enough. Just do it because you like the sculpt. Good luck with your anxiety, I know it can be paralysing.
I used to paint minis with the exact same attitude. What helped me was playing around with low stake figures. I could learn how to paint and not ruin them. The only goal was fun. When I went back to the more expensive amazingly sculpts the anxiety of messing up was gone. Learning is part of the fun but we ruin it by unrealistic expectations. Midwinter minis video where he just decide to paint up his precious space hulk figures started the process for me. Who cares if you paint them the wrong shade of red. Ha ha. It’s just for enjoyment
@@carlstanford7607 exactly this too. Bunch 4-6 minis, maybe with some variety in the sculpts, but racing through the same or similar colour schemes can get your mojo fired up. Never underestimate an oil wash and wipe afterwards too, especially on figures you care less for.
I have been chipping away at a centerpiece model for the last few months, I was just working on it last night. All of these channels really get my painting energy flowing so thanks for the encouragement!
Your 45 minute miniatures end up way better than my 4 hour minis. Haha! But that's a big part of why I love your videos. They inspire me to keep painting because with enough practice, I know I can eventually have a great looking miniature painted in less than an hour. Thanks for all the tips!
It's been about a year since I painted a miniature; being a dad has been taking up my free time. I really enjoy you videos and it keeps me excited for when I can jump back in.
Loving your content at the moment Ninjon! You get me inspired to try new techniques, and then I realise how talented you are when I try and fail to replicate it 😂 You make it look so easy!
Just painted my last one last weekend for Father’s Day with my 7 year old. He was able to paint his own mini and he has done nothing on TH-cam but watch your videos. Thank you for making these videos from both of us!!
I really feel I've fallen into that hole where I just speedpaint armies while watching series and not enjoy the painting part of it. I really focus a lot on painting every little piece and avoid any overlaps. I'll try to do the contrast paint shadowing on the next models- I actually never used contrast or speedpaints on black primed models before.
Jon you're one of my favorite Minnesotans. This video was so intriguing and kind of broke my brain when it comes to shadows and color theory. Every one of those speed painted minis came out beautifully. To answer your question, I had taken a year off from painting due to some severe depression, and just got back into the hobby. Your channel, scotts, and You two on TUP together reignited that passion 10 fold and has helped me out of that slump and made me a more positive person. I've completed 4 models in the last month alone.
See now with the title of this video and the intro I couldn’t disagree more. I always struggled with painting but the contrast paint line really revitalized my interest in painting. I love how the contrast paints flow and blend and get great enjoyment out of the process. My end results look stunning too.
I had some instructors that are into painting minis too and their hours vary widely. Contrast paints let them crush a few models in an hour here and there and yield great results. I like putting down one darker contrast colour as a base then dry brushing in one or two highlights. Models look great in no time!
I think the title is just meant to be inflammatory to get clicks. The final message seems to be find a way of painting that makes you satisfied and stick with it so that you get your models done and enjoy painting. It sounds like you've found something like that with contrast paint and that's fantastic!
I was actually painting last night, just started my first model from the leviathan boxset. I came to your videos for inspiration as they all usually have some snippet of information that I can take moving forward and help me grow as a painter. Thanks for doing your videos the way you do them. Helps me immensely.
Last time I put some paint on a mini was two days ago. Thank you very much for these tips and a really humble, but very important motivational speech for all of us hobbists! Always a pleasure listening to you while building or painting a miniature!!
You're really getting into the navy/magenta underpainting thing :) I did finish a model this morning, though and made a bunch of progress on another 10 today. :)
I have a friend visiting for a week. Our jobs have kept us super busy, and moving has kept me busy too. BUT! I got the craft/ painting room set up before they came down, and we crushed out a few minis two days ago. My issue was being ok with leaving areas in painted or focusing on those unseen parts less. We both managed to do just that and the models turned out better than a lot of what I've painted so far, and it was relaxing to boot. Looking forward to bringing out the brush again this week!
It has been 3 days since I painted my latest miniature, but is the first one I have painted in 30years. For some reason I stopped painted in college and now I'm at a poi t in my life where I can paint again. Thanks for the videos , so much has changed I'm glad you are here to help me catch up.
my last vacation a few months ago i painted an army of orc savages that had been sitting in my closet for 5+ years. and i don't think i would of painted them without you inspiration. Thanks.
It's been a while since I painted a mini. Maybe 2 years? My work became all consuming a bit ago and I want to kit back down with some paint and relax, but it's hard to do. Love these videos - they really help inspire me. I've got a box of Tau Pathfinders that I've been slowly assembling, and trying to figure out my paint scheme, and I love watching your work.
I painted my last mini 26 years ago. But after I bought a 3D printer and watched your videos, I'm catching fire again. The first print is ready and this weekend it's time to slay the grey again. Thank you for reviving a hobby of mine that has been dormant for a long time!
Well, I did not expect to comment here but here we are. Last time I've painted a minature was months ago. I even stopped counting, I was actually done with the hobby. Until I saw this clip. Man, you can hit hard. I only visit the channel one in a while, old habit (used to watch everything there). And you hit me hard. With your mindset, you passion, your calmness. I've sat and just painted. One mini after breakfast and one after lunch. I've finished my project thank to this. I cannot explain enough how much it did to me. I guess there are only 3 things I want to tell you Thank you Keep it up, you are great, this channel is gold and you make a difference. Slay the gray
Last week I broke out the paints and painted a lich. I have only been painting a little over a year, and I really don't have as much time to give to it as I would like to get better. But I try to check your channel every week, because your videos are always informative and enjoyable!
I'm actually in the middle of working on my own Gloomhaven minis. We are starting with the Jaws of the Lion set. I just put the last couple touches of paint on those models in the last hour. I am also finishing the bases for my Komando Kill Team while watching your present gloriousness.
Last mini painted in the late 90's, when the only paints available to me were Humbrol oils and the internet didn't exist. Largely self taught. Just bought me some starter gear and about to paint my first mini in 25 years. Thanks Jon, you are an inspiration even to old buggers like me. Cheers mate.
I just finished painting the Aliens: Another Glorious Day in the Corp board game last weekend. I started painting at the beginning of 2022 and have really been enjoying the hobby. TH-cam channels like yours have definitely been an inspiration. Thank you
I finished my last mini earlier today. Trying to finish up an old project of beautiful but highly detailed minis :). Thank you John for producing such wonderfully inspiring content
Just finished my first zenithal prime on a test model with my first ever airbrush. Got a D&D character I've been working on this week as well. As others have said, I very much appreciate your approach to painting that focuses on your enjoyment of the hobby. Thanks for sharing with us!
This helps a lot. I'm going to the Grand Narrative in november, I'm painting up second edition models, and I'm just in a rut with my troops. Thank you, once again, for the awesome video. You sir, rock.
Paint every weekend and whenever I can during the week, which is pretty rare. I’ve got about 2k worth of stormcast eternals and 4-5 warbands and kill teams in the table currently. aaannndddd another stash of Slaves to Darkness models hiding too
Just painted like this last night. Loved how chilled and fun it was painting with no ''mass producing'' techniques, also made the most colourful Tyranid scheme going. Helps me to bring more fun back into the hobby that can sometimes be sacrificed for time efficient styles.
Finished my amazing spiderman figure for marvel crisis protocol 2 days ago and started my 8 men (orcs?) warband for warcry yesterday. We started a painting group a few weeks ago. We gather together every wednesday and all paint different projects. We share, chat and advise one another. Since then, painting videos and channels such as this one are a hot social commodity around our wednesday table, so thank you!
I always enjoy watching your channel, being very new to this hobby the most important mindset for me is with a cup of coffee grabbing a mini and visualizing the colors I will use. As for my last mini being painted the actual truth is I just finished putting primer on it and I stopped to watch your video. Tomorrow I will hit it again. Great video btw and thanks for sharing.
Last two videos are “your” best version of the Techno Mancer’s influence on you!! I love this direction Jon! You are really helping people in the hobby…Thank You!❤Answer…Today, and everyday!
currently painting a ruined impulsar. I've been pretty much painting daily recently. thanks to yourself and other youtubers. Been motivated to improve and finish my grey pile. thank you for the awesome content.
I really needed this video. The candid takes and desire to have a good quality paint job in a reasonable amount of time just resonate with how I paint. To answer the question I just batch painted some assault intercessors a few days ago. I even tried a brighter blue to see if I would like it.
I added some shading to some space marines earlier today, as I type this I'm building Terminators from Leviathan. Really enjoy the videos and the hobby philosophy you promote. My biggest problem when I got back into minis during covid was that each mini wasn't always better than the last. Being able to paint just to enjoy it and get some color on the models was almost harder than learning how to properly blend. Appreciate what you do man, keep it coming.
It has been two years (maybe 2.5) since I've last actually painted a mini. I have thrown some colors on some army men to see if I wanted to use those colors for an army, but I haven't *painted* in a while. This has helped, definitely. It has gotten me to relax about getting back into it again and realizing that I don't have to put in *so* much time of effort each time I pull out my paints. thanks!
You're making the hobby fun. That makes you the best. Painting SHOULD be fun! Painted a mini yesterday with my four year old daughter. It was her first mini and she was just so into it and splashing paint on her model. I was taking my time as usual and painting with her reminded me of the same message you're giving. Just have fun! Throw caution aside and just paint. Just paint. It's like in creative writing classes they tell you not to think about what you should write, just start writing and let it flow.
My last mini is on my desk right now half way done. I've been stalling on painting for a long time and recently got back into it. Feels good to put some colour on all these models I've been assembling.
Last mini was last night. I'm in the Navy, I have a little portable kit and do a little each night off a small batch I brought out to sea. Maybe only 30 minutes a day. A most refreshing approach, I don't have my big pile of shame or a huge desk full of paint to worry about, just my simple setup that's quick to get underway.
I really needed this video. Been trying to paint small armies and troops for OnePageRules's games lately, and finding the sweet spot between time and quality has been pretty tough. Definitely going to apply this to my next army. Also, I last finished a mini last month, but I do paint twice a week. It's actually the main reason I do painting streams; it helps me stay motivated and have a regular schedule.
I really love this style of painting, and because of content like this (I also find murray from table top time really inspiring) I get more confident in not paiting/covering everything completely but just focussing on the importsnt stuf! The last mini I painteds was about 3 weeks ago (was on a holiday) and it was a darth jar jar in legion scale!
Outside of a few random dabbling where I almost did touch ups, the last model I painted was...about a week ago? I have been in a building/kitbashing mode getting the last few models in my first batch of Orks ready. This poor army has languished with little to no paint for over a decade, my first army. But I have made SO much progress in the past month or two and I finally like my paint scheme, so it has felt like the most productive I have been. All that said, I don't have a routine and really should push myself to sculpt one sooner rather than later. I have a goal to have a painted force for every game I play, and while I got progress, I still have a ways to go. I appreciate your videos, they are always entertaining to watch. The honesty and sincerity really do help me feel better about being in this hobby, no matter what I end up doing.
Nice vid Jon. It is refreshing to see a top level painter just kick back and let loose. I fret may too much over having to paint every mini the best I can and kick myself that I can't "let go" and just be happy to paint to get stuff done. Masses of zombies or whole other board games remain unpainted instead of just getting some colour on them. Last mini I painted was Wednesday and Thursday last week so 4-5 days ago. I will probably start on something else tonight
Due to moving halfway across the country and having a baby (11 weeks tomorrow!) its been a little over 5 months since I’ve painted anything, it’s a drag but it’s worth it. I’m slowly getting my new space set up between bottle feeding and butt wiping. Thanks for the quality videos peppered into what little spare time I have!
I haven't painted in a couple weeks but I'm going down to the painting table tonight. I like your approach here with colors and mixing, I might have to put it into practice.
Last mini I painted was right before I took a break to watch this video and I needed the message. Thank you! I'm working on Tanares Adventures right now and there are sooo many models and I can't spend forever on each one so these tips are great. I was also painting them with your signature colors - which I LOVE.
It's been a couple weeks since I've painted anything, but months since I've completed a mini. This definitely gave me a couple ideas to use on the squad I currently have half painted.
I finished up my first Ork Boyz ever a couple hours ago. First time painting, I did the slap-chop method. They came out great, it was a lot of fun to sit down for a couple hours every day and put on a few colors. Lessons were learned, and while not great, they are far better than I had hoped.
Never. But having watched your TH-cam videos, along with others, for the past six months, I’m ready to attempt my first painting. Thanks for the inspiration you have provided.
I loved your “spaceballs” reference in your opening monologue.❤ I finished my last mini about a week ago for a DND campaign age of worms from dungeon magazine. I find it very difficult to do painting on miniatures during summer time in Minnesota. I have all winter to paint.
Painted just a day ago and assembled a few hours ago. Great vid, and I couldnt agree more. I am still enjoying and interested in painting because I am taking my time with it. I have fairly sizable batches of minis, but I really take the time and enjoy the details on the mini, and try to make each one unique and quirky! It helps a lot, and im glad to see you spread this message!
2 days ago I was doing touchups on my Stormcast Eternal Liberator Captain. Almost done with a group of five which is my first batch painting group I've ever done. Learning lots as I just got into Warhammer this year just after my 45th birthday. And lucky for me your channel is one of the great resources I've found for getting better and keeping this hobby fun.
Great Video as always 🎉 I've just managed to plan more time in for painting again. Last painting session was around yesterday evening. I continued painting my Spiders from Gloomspite Gitz...I use them as proxies for kroot hounds. Have a great day!
I sometimes do not paint for weeks and then I paint a couple of days in a row. My last mini was yesterday, actually. Next is tomorrow and I am looking forward to it. Thank you for your videos mate!
When was the last time I painted a mini? Yesterday. When was the last time I finished one? Just over a month ago. The effects of life and trying to batch paint whole armies, or at least whole units, in the name of efficiency. I think the sweet spot is to deal with any project in chunks that you can finish in a week or two. Getting things finished is a great feeling and helps to motivate you for the next thing. Trying to do too much and never finishing anything is where it all breaks down, for me at least. Awesome content as ever. Keep it coming!
It‘s been a week since I last painted.. I have started to overthink too much, so I really liked the part where you said to just paint in a way that gets you back to the table. :)
Last time I painted was 2 days ago when I finished my Kill team Death Korps of Krieg. It was one of my favourite projects and I tried lots of new stuff: osl, freehand camo, nmm, heat damage. I was so happy with them that I'm building my first diorama for them. I'm also at very good place with my painting. No stress only fun. I paint what I want when I want and I'm super happy with my skill even though I don't use hard techniques
The last two mini's i painted was a month ago. He-man and Skelator. But i have had pneumoniafor the last 3 weeks. Thanks for such a kickass channel. Your are a BMF. Much love
Last mini I painted was yesterday afternoon. Two BattleTech minis: The Cauldron-Born and the Linebacker. Putting a limit to the amount of afford put into every mini, but NOT reducing efford to the minimum, has worked wonders for me. By now, I paint about 2-3 minis a week. Much more minis with much less stress than before. :)
Great video Jon. I'm currently working on a Lion el'Jonson model as a bday gift for a friend. Found time for 2 paint sessions on it this week. Hoping to wrap it up soon!
Beautiful video. I really appreciated the advice here to just paint with the advocacy to do something simple but not robotic. It's been many months since I last painted. This video is gonna change that.
Last painting session was one week ago. 2 small minis, both not yet finished. With your technic they should have been done so I will have to try it out. Yours look amazing for 45 minutes!
I last painted a couple of days ago. Finished my first squad of Stormtroopers for Star Wars Legion. This was the first time I have seriously painted in over 20 years. It was fun. I have so much to learn.

I guess there are only 3 things I want to tell you
Thank you
Keep it up, you are great, this channel is gold and you make a difference.
Slay the gray
Last week I broke out the paints and painted a lich. I have only been painting a little over a year, and I really don't have as much time to give to it as I would like to get better. But I try to check your channel every week, because your videos are always informative and enjoyable!
Painted my last mini yesterday. I have been painting semi-daily for a half year now. Love the content! Keep it up!
I continued work on my Votaan last night! Thanks for the constant inspiration, Slay the Grey!
Thank you John for producing such wonderfully inspiring content
years since I've painted one... and I learn a lot here, so thanks for the videos and being there
Just finished my first zenithal prime on a test model with my first ever airbrush. Got a D&D character I've been working on this week as well. As others have said, I very much appreciate your approach to painting that focuses on your enjoyment of the hobby. Thanks for sharing with us!
Painted my last mini and finished it, a moth ago or so... thank for your videos and encouragement! 😁😁🙌🙌
Finished a Viking hut yesterday. Trying to paint more and every now and then challenge myself , thanks for another thing to try out .
Last two videos are “your” best version of the Techno Mancer’s influence on you!! I love this direction Jon! You are really helping people in the hobby…Thank You!❤Answer…Today, and everyday!
Painted a week ago! Back at the table today watching your video while I do some priming!
currently painting a ruined impulsar.
I painted my last mini about 30 minutes ago. Thanks for the contrast paint shadowing idea.
It’s been about 3+ months since my last paint round. Thank you ninjon for the inspiration!
It has been two years (maybe 2.5) since I've last actually painted a mini. I have thrown some colors on some army men to see if I wanted to use those colors for an army, but I haven't *painted* in a while.
This has helped, definitely. It has gotten me to relax about getting back into it again and realizing that I don't have to put in *so* much time of effort each time I pull out my paints. thanks!
I painted last weekend. Some legion Wookiees with speed paints. I am excited to try the speed paint shadows technique you shared in this video!
Mate, i could listen to your voice all day. You’re my 40k ASMR. It’s been about 4 months since my last mini. Love your vids.
Champion!
Whenever the stresses of painting start piling up, there's a Ninjon video that reminds you you're doing something fun and to just relax.
Last weekend! I probably average 1 mini a month, but the reminder from these videos keeps me from forgetting to set aside time!
Thank you for this awesome tip! I paint everyday in my half-hour-lunchbreak. This makes it look even cooler and its easier! Keep going!
It's been a year since I painted. I bought a house and haven't made space for my stuff. Working on it because of your videos!
Got a couple units primed up last night, going to start in on them tonight. Thanks for sharing the process bro...
Ninjon is getting batter and better :) Great vid! I finished painting my last Astra Militarum about 2 weeks ago.
I don't paint since a long time ago... 6 months perhaps... And I trying to find motivation to start again, and your videos help a lot. Thank you, man.
I've been in a weird way lately...haven't painted in month's.....thanks ninjon for inspiring me to slay the gray!
Never. But having watched your TH-cam videos, along with others, for the past six months, I’m ready to attempt my first painting. Thanks for the inspiration you have provided.
I loved your “spaceballs” reference in your opening monologue.❤
I finished my last mini about a week ago for a DND campaign age of worms from dungeon magazine.
I like the way as you said blends better than just black. This is a very interesting painting technique!! Thank you.
Yesterday. I got back to the hobby a few months ago. Infinity (Corvus Belli) and speed paints have jump started my passion for painting!
Yesterday! I put some Stormshield on decals. Did a couple of mini’s. It was a in between quick job.
I sometimes do not paint for weeks and then I paint a couple of days in a row. My last mini was yesterday, actually. Next is tomorrow and I am looking forward to it. Thank you for your videos mate!
I literally just got up from my painting table to grab a bite and watch a YT. :D Love this style, more art, less chore!
I last painted about a month ago. But today is the DAY! I've got a 90s scorcha all primed up and ready to be painted in time for the end of the month.
Last time I painted. Last night before bed. Next time. In about 10 mins.
Awesome video. Lots of great hobby wisdom.
Never painted a mini but this helps make it quite a bit more approachable! I've watched a bunch of your content and it's always great!
I last painted a couple of days ago. Finished my first squad of Stormtroopers for Star Wars Legion. This was the first time I have seriously painted in over 20 years. It was fun. I have so much to learn.
