Episode 122 - How to stop a Power Steering fluid leak on a Ford Fiesta Mk6

- Not long after the Fiesta was MOT I noticed a funny sound coming from the steering. Upon close inspection, I discovered Power Steering Fluid pouring out of one of the pipes. Could it be something simple, or would I need to replace the entire Steering Rack? It was time to get messy once more!

I got 02 fiesta unfortunately i have power steering fluid all leaking in steering rank big job garage said probably cost 600 hundred plus he couldn't get the parts as older car i might have to say good bye to my fiesta you was so lucky good video mate learned something
Thank you pal. I will have to admit that we got lucky. As things stand though, the new O-ring pairing is still holding up and there are no new drips of power steering fluid on our drive! 🤣
To be fair, £600 wouldn't be far off what I'd have expected the garage to charge, considering parts and labour. It's not actually the most difficult job in the world though. It's all just the removal of pipes, nuts and bolts. I replaced the one on my Jaguar XJ6 X300 a number of years ago. It was leaking very, very badly. As long as you can get the car high enough off the floor (even on axle stands), you'll have room. A set of decent spanners and sockets, plus a big waterproof sheet to catch the mess, and you'll be away! 😁
Enjoying the vids pal. I don't even have a mk6 Fiesta, I just enjoy watching the fixes. Good stuff 👍🏻
Thank you mate. Really appreciate that. I enjoy making these types of videos. Learning through trying things yourself is always very rewarding. If it helps someone else as well, even better. 😎👍
Holy shit! I've failed my tüv (mot) because the steering rack was moist with oil. The shop said they'd probably have to replace the whole steering gear (or rack?), so i bought a used replacement with the plan on doing it myself. If it would just be a bad o-ring, i'll be able to fix'er up tomorrow, no big repair needed. Because that point (where the steering column is) is the only moist place on it, which made me doubt that the whole thing is shot. I will definetely look into it and look if that is the leaking spot tomorrow and replace the o-ring if it is. That would be a dream! Thanks for the video, gave me an idea what the problem could be. If it is, i'll donate a fiver to your patreon or whatever, it would be so much money and work saved!
Oh wow! Thank you so much for your comments dude. Really means a lot. Such a generous offer. I currently don't have a patreon set up, but will probably look to do so if our channel takes off. Early days yet though! 😀
Ultimately, the reason for our videos going up is to share the experiences. If any of my simple repairs help someone else watching how I do them, that's what counts. I enjoy making these sorts of videos and the enjoyment goes further still if somebody benefits from them.
Keep me posted on how you get on with yours! Thanks again pal. 😎
superb as usual and im sure this will help people with your knowledge and showing people how to fix there own cars
Thanks again Paul. Really appreciate your comments and support. It does feel good knowing that doing these sorts of videos are helping others with similar problems, especially if it means they can save a bit of money too. 👌
cheers mate for sharing your repairs with the viewers, I'm very interested as I have a Mk6 fiesta myself, and enjoy doing what repairs I can myself ,
Bless you Tony. Thank you so much for your comments. Means a lot. I've always been a fan of doing as much as I can myself, through self-learning and trial and error. If it helps someone else along the way, even better. 👍👍👍
Well thanks mate. It really helped me to understand everything about it and im glad of it last week my car got the same problem and i paid to mechanic for it about 250€ but still droping a bit oil next time i will fix it my sefl
And also forgot to say I am your new supporter
Cheers Mikael. Glad to know the video has been of some use to you. If you are still finding that you have a small leak after fitting a replacement O-ring, check that you have the correct sized one. If you have, apply a squirty sealant around the outer end of the pipe as well (being careful you don't put any directly inside the pipe itself) before putting it into the rack.
@@mikaelhussaini Thanks for the support too. Really appreciate it.
Hey there nice video ! Tell me the connector with the orange tabs on the hose ... I got seepage from my mk 6 there few drips losing a day can the connector be changed or the whole hose needs replacing thanks 🙏 any ideas please ... Are you in Sutton Coldfield ??
Hi mate. Thanks very much. Glad you liked the video. 😀
If I'm honest, I'm not sure. The connectors could be sealed within the hoses. If they are, you could risk damaging the hoses swapping them out anyway, if you can even by the connectors separately. The thing to take note of is exactly where the leak is coming from in that connecting area. Is it the male end or the female end? Are either of the hoses split at the connecting ends? What you don't want to do is purchase a replacement part for the wrong bit and still have leaks anyway. Have you checked if there is an O-ring on the male end? I can't recall from memory if there was on ours. If so, try swapping that first. You can literally buy them for pennies. If that doesn't work, try applying some gasket sealant around the outer circumference of the male end. Not too much, as you don't want to have any of it getting into the pipe channels and blocking them up. If none of these work, you could try swapping the connectors out, if indeed you can get replacements. You just have to remember that if they are sealed inside the pipes, those seals are broken once dismantled and you'll need to find a way of getting them sealed again. Not sure if this would be glue or jubilee clips. If it is still leaking after all of this, replacing the pipe is probably what you'll have to do. Looking on ebay, you can get the complete pipes pretty cheap to be fair.
Hope this helps pal. Keep me posted on your progress.
We're based Mansfield-way. 👍
Good video m8 very informative keep them coming
Thank you very much Andrew. Yeah, pretty satisfying once again to fix something else on the car, especially as it cost me practically nothing and didn't take too much effort. Besides, I couldn't live with the drips on the driveway anymore! Lol.
Good job.I have the same problem. What oil do you use?
Thanks pal. Appreciate that.
I just used Carlube Power Steering Fluid. You can buy it from most shops, even Supermarkets.
Keep me posted on how you get on. 👍
good job mate!..thanks for sharing!..
Thanks very much pal. Really appreciate that. 👍

Thank you Jimmy. this is very useful. My Fiesta is 6 months older than yours and the reservoir is "conveniently" hidden under the battery rack. Did you have any error messages on the dash? My Power Steering lost all its fluid and there's a "failure" warning on the dash even though I've topped it up. Many thanks, Graham
Hi Graham. Thanks for your comments. Strange how your reservoir is in a different place.
Anyway, no. No messages on the dash of our car. Could that "Failure" message be linked to something else? Perhaps a sensor on the steering rack itself? How does the steering actually feel with the reservoir topped up? It should obviously be fairly light.
@@jimmykneesall Thanks again Jimmy. You reflect my thoughts. Having topped up the reservoir I found no further leaks yet, but the steering is rock solid at low speed. Haven't dared to try at anything above walking g pace yet. I agree it's probably a sensor - or possibly the hydraulic pump is seized. Weather's too grim to get out and under this week! Great videos - how do you manage to keep your hands (and your language) so clean?
@@grahambibby6360 Mmm. If it's not leaking and it's heavy to steer (I assume you have your engine running whilst you're steering?), then I would agree that seems like a failure to a sensor or the rack itself. If you have an error code, it could be just a sensor, which should be an easy fix. Not that I've ever done one! 🤣
Thanks for your kind words. Believe me, my hands get dirty a lot. I try to hold back on the language where I can too! 🤣 I just take the view of giving these things a go. What's the worst that could happen? 😁
Hi mate I have exactly the same problem issue with the o ring my pump is shot aswell how difficult is it to change out the pump just a case of undoing pipes and bolts and take the belt off running it bleed it put it back together?
I would imagine that's pretty-much all you'd need to do Callum. I've never swapped out a pump on one of these Mk6's, but I did one on my mate's Vauxhall Vivaro (Episode 48) and the method was pretty-much as you'd described. Hope you can get yours fixed. Keep me posted. 👍
Having a big ass leak on my ford fusion same everything but body lights and whatnot to a mk6 if this is the solution I'll be a happy man hahah
Nice to know that the Fusion shares so many similar parts. Hope that the video helps and that you can fix yours. Keep me posted. 👍
I'm crossing everything I have hoping this is my issue 🙏 🤞🤞 I'm having the same problem only owned it 2 weeks 😭😭
Keep me posted Niko. Definitely interested in knowing if my video has helped you in any way. It is a bit messy to do, but really easy. Just make sure you have a bucket and PLENTY of towels, sheets, etc at the ready! Haha.
Unfortunately the seals have gone in my power steering rack 😭😭
@@niko-rascaljones3664 That's a shame Niko. 🙁 Have you managed to get a replacement fitted yet?
@jimmykneesall No mate, it's full of that stop leak stuff atm 😂 I need to get a bigger car when my first year insurance is done 👍
@@niko-rascaljones3664 Nice! HaHa.
Wow , what happens if i can only find a white o ring will it do ? Or does it have to be black just like the original?
As long as it stops the leak mate...
Did you take one O ring off and replace it with 2?
Iv done this job 5 times still leaks
I did indeed put 2 on pal. Mine's still holding up from just over a year ago now. If you're still having troubles, put a little bit of mastic sealant over the area where the O-ring goes. Just be careful to not let any get inside the pipe or the inlet to the steering rack, as you obviously don't want any of it blocking these bits up. 👍
Still sounded noisy though.. did you end up having to replace the pump?
Not as noisy as before though! Haha! As of this moment, it's still running true and still has its old pump. I'll keep my eye on things, but it's all good at the moment. Cheers pal. 👍
Jimmy, i have a fiesta style 2005 plate and apparantly i need a new power steering rack. I was told by mechanic to go and get the rack and to make sure it comes with the 2 pipes ?? I have literally tried every scrap yard and can only get the rack (apparantly they dont do them with the pipes as it's a pain in the a**e) I have since bought a bottle of Lucas power steering stop leak and i am waiting on it arriving from amazon and am hoping that this works to save alot of hassle.. If it doesn't work and i need to get a rack from a scrap yard do you have any idea at all if i can simply buy the 2 pipes somewhere else? Like do i have to get specific pipes or will any pipes fit any rack? I am clueless when it comes to this sort of thing, i can just about change a bulb or 2 but anything more technical than that i am done 😴
Hi bud. If I'm honest, I wouldn't attempt any old pipe to do this. If you can't get proper Ford parts, at least get aftermarket pipes that are designed to fit this specific rack. You're dealing with brakes, so you need to be safe. Surprised you can't find any second-hand ones about though. They're not hard to remove. It's just a bit messy to do.
@@jimmykneesallCheers mate, i took car to another recommended garage yesterday after being advised that the mechanic there can do the job without me having to source the parts etc, So he's literally just got back to me this afternoon and apparantly the rack doesn't need replaced as far as he can see? He says it looks like it's just the seals so he has ordered these from ford and will get it done on Monday for me. He says he will have a better idea then if i also need the pipes but he's pretty sure the rack is ok? He told me the same as you (Not to get second hand parts for this job) If it's just the seals it will be around £50 for the job which is a massive difference if it was the whole rack and the extras so hoping it is just the seals 🤞🏻 EDIT* The reason i'm worrying about getting it fixed and not just scrapping it is the simple fact in the last 2 months i have spent a small fortune on the car, New battery, shock absorber (from scrappies) new pads, and had an issue where my gear stick was really stiff (had that sorted aswell) Not to mention i had a bearing replaced about 3 months ago also and the garage that done that job broke a sensor.. I didn't realise till i drove away and my spedometer wasn't moving 'it was staying at zero' turned out they had damaged a sensor, when i phoned them they denied damaging it saying they werent anywhere near a sensor but after searching online the sensor they broke is exactly in the area where they would have been working. And when i got the sensor fixed at another garage they also said the sensor was in that area.
@@bonnetdedouche Sounds like you've spent a pretty penny on it then. As long as you can afford to keep the car going and you like it, it's worth doing. Our car had a stiff gearbox too and I made a video on how I sorted that for nothing. Hopefully the garage can sort out the leak on yours. Keep me posted on how it goes. Cheers.
