Great content for amateurs like me

Mark I have an hob filter with the blue pads of course and then a slot directly in front of them that catriges slide in that I can fill with media ( one on each side) can I fill one of these with gfo? Is it too much flow. Its bassically a standard Hob filter with bio wheels. Thanks. Anyone else feel free to respond.

In a bag, media does have exposure to water, just the flow of the water over the media varies in the batch of the media. It certainly does meet the water.

Of course that effects the efficiencies of the media, though it may then as a mass may last longer.
Carbon if not activated carbon will last 2-4 weeks. Activated carbon can last 1-3 months depending on the load of compounds in the tank. GFO varies depending on quality and flow. Biopellets, just have to monitor those nitrates and phosphates, amount used and can last just weeks to many many months.

    With carbon am
I able to measure to know when to replace ? Or only time increments ?

Can you combine GFO and Carbon in one reactor? I know ideally you want two different reactors as both have to be run differently not to mention adjust each one per water chemistry. Only reason I ask is because I have two canisters available and right now I have bio pellets in one and carbon in the other.

It's best for each media to have it's own set flow rate. I have seen GFO & Carbon in the same reactor or in canisters inline. The issue is getting the flow right. The correct flow for GFO will slowly breakdown carbon overtime releasing fines into your aquarium. If your skimmer is strong enough it can pull most of the fines out but you can't control it.

Malevolent AK I run a AquaForest Reactor with life bio fill, AF carbon and AF Gfo all stacked. Once you dial in flow and have it stacked in good portions it works perfectly.

Bio Pellets you never replace what is he talking about? They get used up so you replace the amount that is lost. Can go 6 months with them before needed to add.

Or grow macro algae instead of wasting money on all those media's.

Definitely a good option if you have a place to do it.

@@cyprianlipski3724 big refugium and skimmer should be enough in most cases. Unless you are feeding a crap tonne of food.
