  • Today we have 2 identical 1018 cubs that have not run in several years. We will do a basic service and troubleshoot a wiring issue along the way.

    Thanks Jordan, this video is very helpful. My kids said our Cub Cadet LTX 1046 KW V-Twin HydroStatic was not starting so I initially thought starter or bad battery. I noticed when I tried to jump start it a noise was coming from under the seat where the battery is located. I'm assuming it is the solenoid and will try bypassing it next. I am jealous of your clean and spacious garage! :)

    Great video, can’t beat an old cub, I prefer the older ones with the cast iron front ends... but a cub is a cub

    Question, what size bolt hold the battery in place with the yellow bar? I mis placed mine and I can’t find the size anywhere. Thank you for your help!

    Where does that green wire go. And connect to

    Great video! Got an LT1045 Cub Cadet. Just finished a deck mod, now no crank. Does the LT1045 have a solenoid? Looks like red battery wire goes straight into starter. Thinking it’s an ignition switch.

      I’m not sure on the 1045 if it has a solenoid on the starter it won’t on the frame. If there is a cylinder shaped thing on the side of the starter that’s your solenoid.

      @@icanthavenicethings5995 Thanks Brother. I found it and it was extremely corroded. Replacing it.

    Great video! Wish it had popped up in google on my first search. I have an XT1 (about 3 years old) that won't start and the solenoid is 'hidden' on the frame in back of the battery so I had to pull the battery. I bench tested the solenoid, it is testing good. I got continuity (with battery out) from positive red battery small wire which I assume goes to the ignition switch through to the small green wire at the solenoid when I turn the ignition switch on, not the small red wire as I expected. Does that suggest I have a short in the ignition switch or the wire someplace? What would be your suggestion(s) for further testing? My initial problem occurred when I attempted to start it, it turned over about 1/2 a turn and died before it ever fired. No clicking sound. I checked to make sure mower deck was not engaged, brake was set, etc.. Also checked and charged battery. If not the starting system I will assume it is probably one of the interlocks and I have no idea on how to test for those or where some of them are, some are obvious. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

      If I had it in front of me It might be easier for me to understand. But for a quick check I would hook up the battery via jumper cables so you could still reach the solenoid and try testing the smaller wire from the ignition for a full 12v. If your not getting a full 12v it could be an interlock but normally they kill spark not the starter. I’d go for the ignition switch next try testing output with the battery hooked up. Did you check your inline fuse?

    My cub will only click once when I turn the key. Took it to a mower repair about a month ago and he replaced the starter. Now it’s clicking once. Any idea of what could but up? You’re a magician!

      Try by passing your starter solenoid. All you need is a screw driver to cross the solenoid terminals ( the 2 larger terminals coming from the battery to the starter) it’s will cause a spark but should spin your motor over. If it turns over you know solenoid it self is bad. Also make sure your battery is 100% it could click even if it’s very low..

      I'm sure u fixed it but it's definitely the silonoid. Most of the time if it's bad it will still click when u hit the key

    What do you recommend for very slow cranking? Brand new 230CCA battery. Heard several options as far as heavier gauge ground wire, solenoid and maybe starter?

      You could try to directly jump the starter from the battery with cables but there is a decompression arm on the cam that may not be working... there are a few videos on TH-cam explaining how to check this.

    i got a john deere X350 Kawasaki FS600V same issue before i put it away for the season the solenoid is bad i tested it was getting sparks at the terminals and not clicking its a Trombetta solenoid as im going to replace it with a better continous duty Cole Hersee solenoid. Some lawn tractor engines Kawasaki and Kohler not sure on Briggs & Stratton the solenoid on some is on the starter in addition to closing the switch contacts it moves the bendix which moves the pinion gear to mesh with the flywheel ring gear. its on some vertical and horizontal shaft single cylinder and V twin engines. more common on the Kohler command v twins and the Kawasaki FC up to FR series engines Kawasaki calls it a solenoid shift starter.

    If I held the key on to long and smoked the wires to the solenoid would that kill the solenoid ?

    • @icanthavenicethings5995
      @icanthavenicethings5995  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually no I’d say it would burn up the wires first. But the only way to be sure is check with a meter

      Does these motors have to have fuel pump I had one running with no fuel pump until it had an external piston problem when I acquired the new one it came with fuel pump, tank is under seat seems like fuel pump is overloading?

    My solenoid is working, but my ignition isn’t. If I don’t want to buy another can I just use a push button of toggle switch? Any ideas?

    • @icanthavenicethings5995
      @icanthavenicethings5995  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can run a wire directly from your battery to the solenoid adding a push button between. I wouldn’t recommend a toggle as it might flip on while mowing.

    Man ethanol really does dirty up fuel filters. Time to use non-ethanol fuel.

      I wish it was that easy we don’t have any stations that sell it other than boat marinas at 4.75 a gallon.

    Some of these Cub Cadet which is actually by MTD. these may have a Kohler Courage twin cam motor in these these motors aren't that great in these they have so many problems, i would steer clear of them the courage single cylinders as the Briggs intek you have its got problems too the camshaft, leaky valve covers. the best single cylinder engines to use is the older Briggs & Stratton flathead, the Kawasaki FC series, and the older Kohler Command. those are the best engines to use.

      I’ve seen some good results lately from some Kawasaki engines 2000 plus of hard run hours.
