Thanks for this video! I just got a new Blackstar HT-5 and a Line 6 HD 500. It really takes some learning to take advantage of the HD 500's many amazing attributes. FYI- In order for the the HD 500 to work I had to move the "effects loop" before the amp icon in the chain in order to use my overdrive channel. Otherwise, no sound was coming out on the channel, only on the clean channel. I am glad that I figured this out because sometimes I want to use the HT-5 overdrive channel.
In 1:02 the FX return is set to "Line". According to user guide this setting is to operate with peak-to-peak voltage, whatever that means. I want to use my POD HD500 as a pedalboard for my amp but I'm not really getting good results as it is tone sucking. Any advice?
thanks for this...I started plugging my HD500 into my Deville 212 and with the preset tones it works great...but, when I tried to create a tone myself, picked amp, effects etc...the volume just wasn't there...was wondering how to get it to an operating volume...do you have to insert an FX loop into a block all the time?...
Did you ever figure it out? I just got a HD500X. Used a X3 live for a little while but majority of the time straight in with my vox & crybaby into my secret (haha). Also a talk-box. Relying or having on/my sound man take care of my effects.
thanks, much better, I just have one more question, on the hd 500 I have a loop tape sign, I was wonder if this is only for the loop recording or if its possible to add the different effects before the amp, my point is this, if I buy an amp with a good gain, ex. black star amp, and then on the hd 500 add the overdrive before the amp, and all the other effects after the amp, how is that possible, and if I do the normal hd output to am amp, sounds so bad, even when I only using the gain from the hd
Well there are multiple issues,,, impedance mismatch and also coloration by blending guitar preamps. Ive found it works best to either use hdr500s preamp modeling with your tube power amp by bypassing the amps preamp or strictly using the hd500 for FX's. You can do 4CM successfully but i think you need an extra piece of gear,,, a reamp box. Their fairly cheap though,, but you are still blending preamps and have to deal with coloration.
Dear Line6 I bought a POD XT LIVE and I'm not getting a good tone calling it an amplifier ORANGE Crush 20L by INPUT, considering this amp does not have the LOOP. Therefore, I ask: What is the best way to adjust the settings of the pedal so that it is connected to the INPUT of the amplifier? thank you
Could you explain if it works with the POD X3 Live?? The methods of cable would be to not use the preamplificado? in that situation would use this method. Thank you. I would appreciate your response!
Hi Line6. I've a POD 2,0 desktop and just bought a Marshall dsl40 I connect guitar to the pod then connect the pod to the amp input. My new amp has got return and send connections. What shoul I do for the best connection for this setup. Thanks In Anvance
Sorry I pushed enter jeje... the question was Wich line6 amp would you recommend me to use my podhd500? from cheapest, to little less cheapest amps or some better but I do not have so much incoming now, thank you very much And sorry for this kind of english I'm still learning.
I have a 75 watt IV spider and a POD HD500X pedalboard, I need to help me understand how to connect the L or R output directly to the amplifier without losing the original sounds of the pedalboard, since I tried to set the amplifier in clean sound to get Better the sounds of the POD but it has been useless, it always sounds like stuck sounds.
hello line6 friends..I have a question...well I've owned a podhd500 since few months ago I was using it always only with headphones and the amp's models sound great...but recently I purchased a new amp not valves amp it is a VoxValvetronix Vt80 and I can't make a good tone with the pod it is so different with headphones...well the amp is ok but it is not a great amp...I would like to know or receive some suggestion from you to use my pod with this amp in a better way...and wich line 6 amp would
I really think line 6 should make a video not only connecting the 4C method to an amp, but also how to tweak the FX loop on the amp as well as HD. I get that you sell the DT series amps and have tons of vids on them, however many people have their own tube haeds like Mesa, Marshall etc. that would love to use the HD FX only (NOT THE AMP MODELING live and cannot figure out ow to teak them. I know I am one!
After, Must I set the output mode (system & I/O setup) to the front or to the power amp? What is the focus parameter? Do I have to use as amp models the preamps? (eg "Class A-15 Pre", not the complete stack with pre, power, cab and mic)
thanks , all this questions I am asking does not explain on the hd 500, I have an zoom 9 tt and the sounds is not as good as the hd 500, but the manual, is really great, explains in pictures everything and in a easy way, and its easy to operates even without looking at the manual, plus shows in details every amp name and how its sounds to what amp, and what type of gain you can get, hd 500 shows only a few of them, but hd 500 is a winner when comes to sounding, thanks any way
So if I wanna use presets or downloaded tones with the 4 cable method, they will sound better if I insert the FX loop after the amp in the preset patch?
I dont think it matters whether the modeled preamp feeds the amps preamp or the other way around. Try it and see! Placing your effects in the right order is important though.
Hi, thank you for response. I have submitted something round 10 items already and no one ever contacts me back, to provide more details, or clarify the requirement.
Hello guys, some time ago i bought a bugera 333xl, lately i bought a pod HD500 and a friend of mine today told me that it would be useless with the bugera as the pod hd 500 has is own amps...i`m a bit sceptical about his opinion,i think that you can use the amp on a clean channel and it wouldn`t ruin the sound of my effects? could you guys clear this up for me? The bugera is an amazing amp and i don`t want to replace with a pre amp. Thanks
coming from the old POD 2.0...what happens when plugging straight into the front of the amp with a POD is the preamp tone of your amp (whatever it may be, Fender, Marshal etc will color the tone you're trying to put out through your amp) It's best to use your amps power section only to avoid coloration...IMO...
I'm trying to connect my POD HD 400 to my Mini Rectifier without success! I use POD to record, so I have a Rectifier tone with some effects, I was trying to use the same effects but disabling the AMP modeling and using the real Mesa head in live shows. Can someone help me?
I have the same model of Multieffect, and I like conect with Blackstar HT-5 Head amp, how can I do to use the High gain Channel and Only add delay and chorus of my pedal?
Can anyone tell me how I can insert the POD HD Desktop model into my Peavey 6505+? Would i follow the same directions as the HD500 as seen in this video? Also... Does an amp model and can have to be active on the POD itself or can I just use the effects alone? I am not familiar with this method at all!
Hallo , nice video! I have problem with HD 500, mabye help me? When I put FX Loop in the chain my output dies (balance and unbalanced) doesn't produce any sound. So that 4 cable method not working. Can you help me????
Why did I get a weird spacey/delay effect with this set up? I couldn't figure it out. The chain went volume, gain, fx loop, amp, reverb. Even with all the effects off. Never did figure it out. Also, after plugging it into the front cab of my egnator, giving up on the four cable method, it sounded garbage. The eq was totally off and I ended up not even using the pedal for the gig. Its like the overall quality just dropped. Any answered from anybody would be great
Dear Line 6 can you please include in your next firmware update feature, that enable user to use only the various CAB simulation rather then the the whole amp and cab combination. This is extremely important when I want to use my own preamp of my amp when using 4CM and want to use L6 phones output.Thank you
I tried the 4-cm with the PODHD500 and a Mesa Electra Dyne and I thought the POD really messed with the tone of the amp. And that was even using the POD with all effects off while in the 4-cm.
@filipopolis1976 It works AMAZING with the HD 500 if connected and set up properly. I put the FX loop after the amp in the chain on the HD 500. It sounds great whether or not using the amp sims or just "no amp" and listening to the HT 5 sounds. This amp takes FX well in general, GREAT EFFECTS LOOP! I couldn't be happier with it.
Um let's see you put 3 cables to a 4 cable set up plug1 then 2 then 3 and whoops . 4th cable no have . I. Gonna take a wild guess and say maybe but I'm not willing to bet on it to work so no no no maybe
I just got my POD500X and I'm trying to hook it into the front of my amp, but it isn't making any sound when I plug from the fx send on the POD. Has anyone else encountered this issue, or could there just be something wrong with mine? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
@kaontagyud only if you are using the preamp of your amp if you use the POD amp sims this it doesnt matter much. you see you want your delays and reverbs and timed effects to be after your preamp/distorion and the other stuff like wahwah and things to be before it BUT if you are using JUST an amp with a clean channel and the POD is ALL your fx and distortions then it doesnt matter the POD is already doing it for you I THINK I am right
@themonster13 dude, just get a PA speaker... send the signal out to it. you get your tones from the pedal, and the PA plays it out loud. this is what i do for jazz band. what are you doing with a 15 watt spider and $500 pedal? little backwards, eh?
Dont have pod hd. I had podxt, podxt live and M9 years ago. so i'm not new to the line6 bs (in fact, i;m addicted to their bs hahaha). I think, this 4CM will work great only if you could shutdown/disables amp+cab modeling and change the output mode to "studio direct". In podxt the call it "studio direct"", I dont know what they call it in pod hd. BUT, like @tecnolover2642 said, they also should inform us about the impedance/signal level.
This setup is an impedence mismatch is it not?? A guitar amp input expects to see a guitar signal NOT a line level signal from an FX send. This will mess up your tone I think.
rrguitar1 I am quite aware of what impedance is. What you aren't aware of is that this line 6 video forgot to explain one very important thing. There is a little switch on the back next to the fx return jacks for stomp/line. This must be set to stomp. I figured it out a long time ago but others might not know.
rrguitar1 I know what impedance is. What you apparently don't know is that this line 6 vid neglected to mention that the fx send must be set to "stomp" not "line". There is a little switch on back for that. If its set to "line" the amp input sees the wrong impedance. I figured this out long time ago but others may not know.
Tony Inosencio the output switch by the expression pedal should be set to "line" because its going into the fx return of the guitar amp which is a line level input. the "amp" output setting is only for going direct into to the front input of the guitar amp - same reason why the stomp switch must be selected for pods fx send to feed the guitar amp's front input.
I think you guys may have solved the issue I was having. I noticed this unit made my amp, a Randall Thrasher, sound terrible and the FX didn't work right. Now, knowing how the switches should be set, should help things quite a bit.
Hmmm. Wonder how to do this into 2 amps? I have two identical half stacks and would like to connect the hd500 to them in a similar fashion and run true stereo. Guess that would be called a 7 cable method? Anyone? Anyone? :D
I have the advance manual, and does not explain nothing about, that, how can I use my hears, if I never heard about the 4 cables input, do I have to guess, whats next, can I mix all the cables, maybe all microwave ovens should not have a manual, people can figure out, most stupid reply from your side,
line 6 support is really funny, no explanation about how to connect the hd 500, they should have a simple menu, that explains all details in a simple way, zoom sounds worst, but its a relive when it comes to simplicity, so I am selling the hd 500, because, I know how to work from the pc, but from the hd itself, I have no time and patient, most of the manual explains nothing, what's the difference between tripod or whats the cut in the amp, etc, nothing good
+Ender Binen This is not a problem with the Pod. Mesa Amps have a problem with their FX loops. You never get 100% wet. Therefore you're getting your dry tone and your slightly delayed pod tone at the same time. This latency is what gives you the "digital sound." This will happen with any FX processor through that loop.. The workaround is to run your FX at 100% and use the blend knob on the back of the Mesa to get the desired mix. It's a lame workaround but it works. I've done the 4 cable method with a Pod and an Engl amp and it sounds really good.
This is a horrible tutorial. HORRIBLE. A lot of details are missing about the settings required on the hd500. Seems all Line6 cared to show was where the cables go. And what about impedance matching of the FX send/return on the unit? If the loop is set to 'line' its the wrong match for going into the amp's guitar input jack! If its set to stomp its wrong for the return jack which should be line level. Only solution that should solve this is a little reamp box.
Thanks for this video! I just got a new Blackstar HT-5 and a Line 6 HD 500. It really takes some learning to take advantage of the HD 500's many amazing attributes.

Can I use the line pod hd pro plugged into the head loop? i just need fx from pod
@Line6Support is the 4 cable method better than plugging the pod staight into the front of the amp?
Hi Line6.
I've a POD 2,0 desktop and just bought a Marshall dsl40
I connect guitar to the pod then connect the pod to the amp input.
My new amp has got return and send connections.
What shoul I do for the best connection for this setup.
Thanks In Anvance
will this work for the hd400 if i set the the reverbs and mudulations to post on the software?
can you tell mw, how is your way to connect the hd500, I just want the same sound as I hear on the headphones to be amplified and loud, thanks
what amps have a series effects loop and which ones are parallel?

I dont have a pre-amp out and power amp in on my amp, only the normal input, is it still possible to connect the pod to my amp?
so with this method can I use the amps´s distortion without messing up with de delay?
or add mor dist from the pod without sounding horrible?
Andres Henry yes you have lots of routing abilities with this.
Could you please tell me how you route he cables??
Mosconi526 did you ever find out how to do this, man?
I've been playing for 10 years and I don't even OWN four cables
Phil Collins Hill 😂👍
I just bought an used hd500x then saw your reply :) yes me too
🤣🤣
This happened to me too
Hi, i want to use the 4CM whith my HD500 and mesa boogie f-50. How do i then bypass the preamp of my mesa, and use the preamp models in my hd500?

Its possible to do this on a pod 300 HD?
yep it will have same thing on the back
SO THAT IS USED? STUDIO DIRECT OR IN FRONT COMBO
@ffooxx20b that's normal. We receive feedback submissions but due to the high volume of submissions we do not reply.
How would l connect my spiderIV120 to that rig any pointers?

Wich setting should I use in the OUTPUT section? "Combo power amp" in case of COMBO and "stack power amp" in case of Head ?
Yes.
Basically works the same way with a M13, right?
could you plz make tutorials on line 6 hd pro or pro x,there is not much in the internet..
can i connect spider 4 15w amp to this pedal?

Can you connect a POD HD 500 To a Vox Valvetronix VT20+ I want to get a multi-effects processor but is it compatible with my amp?
Hi. What is the output setting in the pod hd500X when using this method?
pavotibio it should be set to "line" because it feeding the fx return of your guitar amp.
I have the same amp. What do you set the output to? combo, front or combo pwr amp???
Combo pwr amp
If i want to put analog drive pedals to the signal, where will be?
I'm trying to connect my POD HD 400 to my Mini Rectifier without success!
I use POD to record, so I have a Rectifier tone with some effects, I was trying to use the same effects but disabling the AMP modeling and using the real Mesa head in live shows. Can someone help me?
Andre Baltieri did you ever figure this out??
You have to insert an FX loop block in the chain on the POD.
I have the same model of Multieffect, and I like conect with Blackstar HT-5 Head amp, how can I do to use the High gain Channel and Only add delay and chorus of my pedal?
I just want to use the power/tubes. I use the modeling for amps and effects

How can I connect 500x to Line 6 Spider IV 75w AMP?
Why did I get a weird spacey/delay effect with this set up? I couldn't figure it out. The chain went volume, gain, fx loop, amp, reverb. Even with all the effects off. Never did figure it out. +Christopher Brown Depends on which amp you use. Certain amps aren't capable of a 100% serial fx loop and therefore you get that weird sound.
Yeh read my comments in it. I think there are impedance mismatches with this 4CM setup.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this is a bad product design
Hi,
Does anyone knows if this config can be achieved by a POD HD400?
Thanks,
@filipopolis1976 It works AMAZING with the HD 500 if connected and set up properly. I put the FX loop after the amp in the chain on the HD 500. It sounds great whether or not using the amp sims or just "no amp" and listening to the HT 5 sounds. This amp takes FX well in general, GREAT EFFECTS LOOP! I couldn't be happier with it.
Has anyone tried using the pod's volume control to control the overall volume of the amp for low volume gigs?
does make any sound difference compared to direct in to the amp?
i have 3 cables, can i do this?
Um let's see you put 3 cables to a 4 cable set up plug1 then 2 then 3 and whoops . 4th cable no have . I. Gonna take a wild guess and say maybe but I'm not willing to bet on it to work so no no no maybe
Can you use a Variax guitar using this 4CM?
yep.
I sold my G-System to stay away from this bs and now I'm back into it again. Can't anybody make a simple to freaking use effects floorboard?
RealMarcosMiranda The HD500 is very easy to use...
You could use studio monitors, then you only need a couple cables.
must be the pod.. as I have the gsp1101 and it sounds FANTASTIC through my MK V
I just got my POD500X and I'm trying to hook it into the front of my amp, but it isn't making any sound when I plug from the fx send on the POD. Has anyone else encountered this issue, or could there just be something wrong with mine? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Jesse McCormick
you have to make ssure you inserted an fx loop in the hd500 so it jnow to send it out the fx send.
Jesse McCormick are your interface set right. There is a combo front, stack front ext.
can I do this with my XTlive ?
@kaontagyud only if you are using the preamp of your amp if you use the POD amp sims this it doesnt matter much. you see you want your delays and reverbs and timed effects to be after your preamp/distorion and the other stuff like wahwah and things to be before it BUT if you are using JUST an amp with a clean channel and the POD is ALL your fx and distortions then it doesnt matter the POD is already doing it for you I THINK I am right
@ffooxx20b thanks for your feedback. Please make sure to submit a formal feature request on our website under our Contact Us link.

No it isn't. There's a book out called impedance for dummy's. I believe it's on sale at Amazon.

I've done the 4 cable method with a Pod and an Engl amp and it sounds really good.
sound very very droped
@EvilPopsicleDog It's called sarcasm

Only solution that should solve this is a little reamp box.
will this work with boss katana? , i have a Variax standard guitar
does it apply to the hd500x too?
Im pretty sure they are exactly the same. The hd500x just has more processing power and maybe the looper records longer.
