I was very visible at work and always excelled at what I did; unfortunately, it made my complacent co-workers uncomfortable. I never wanted to be in the limelight and avoided publicities, yet they did everything to pull me down. In my past jobs, my bosses always appreciated my work ethic, but my co-workers hated me for that.
Being visible is pretty easy, but how can you be visible w/o being first to mind for stupid ad hoc tasks or special projects which actually take me away from my core job. Do you just have clever ways to say no as a time management tool? Is it better to be visible & tell the people no all the time?
If you feel you're being handed low level tasks all the time, perhaps you're visible for the wrong things. Try to align yourself with higher level projects/tasks to become known and visible for those tasks. It might take putting your hand up or approaching your boss to request you be assigned certain tasks.
I am stuck & confused with different opinions ! Kara could u help me out - i think i should transition from my job of mechanical engineer into IT field of data scientist or in artificial intelligence jobs as there is no good scope left for construction hvac engineers in my country & salary is also less in comparison with others..
Changing careers is definitely something you should think about. If you would like to change, start looking at what technical skills you need to learn for those jobs. Talk to people already in similar jobs to what you're aiming for. You should be able to easily connect with these people on LinkedIn if you don't know anyone already in those jobs. Do some informational interviews and your own research first. These methods can also get you to know people in those industries/jobs which might make getting an interview easier.
Do volunteering for things such as projects, attend confences or requests where volunteers are sought to raise viabblility. Kepp ai diary fo what you have done mention in youe appraisal meetings and also if the application prcocess requires examples you can use to highlight your skills & expereinces that make you a good candidate .
