    Non-stop from Houten to Amsterdam along this canal? No way! This canal is in the middle of the city. Maybe you mean the Amsterdam Rijn canal, but even that bicycle path goes only from Ams to Maarssen, north of Utrecht.

    1700 cyclists per hour is close to the maximum capacity of a motorway lane. Imagine the city streets that would be needed for that kind of traffic. You will never get a car every 2 seconds on a lane in the city. The number of trips would also increase because a sizable part of those cyclists need to be chauffeured around. It's not an investment of infrastructure it's a cost cutting measure (in building it, space and maintenance) on infrastructure. :)
    "
    Depending on the vehicle composition, the capacity for a motorway is between 1,800 and 2,400 vehicles per hour per lane."
    Someone should set up a quality 'coffee to go' on the route. An old oliebollenkraam would work just fine. Ka ching!!! (Douwe Egberts I'm talking to you, great branding and tasting lab for your factory 2 km away too.)

    • @OntarioTrafficMan
      @OntarioTrafficMan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah for a lane on an urban road with intersections you'd be lucky to achieve 800 vehicles per hour. Even if the 1700/h is in both directions combined, that's still double the throughput within the same width.

    Bij Villa Jongerius voor is er een probleem met de damwand die zowat op instorten staat. Dat beton dateert dan ook uit de jaren 30. Vandaar dat de Kanaalweg bovengronds ter plekke nog steeds niet hersteld is.
    Wat er op dat punt ook nog gebeurd is, is het vervangen en aanleggen van diverse leidingen (elektriciteit, internetbekabeling, stadsverwarming, olie- en gasleidingen) vanwege de nabijgelegen hulpcentrale van Vattenfall (v/h Nuon) en de aanleg van een woonwijk + jachthaventje op het voormalige Defensieterrein.
    Dat Defensieterrein was sinds ca. 1936 in gebruik als bedrijfsterrein voor de Autohandel Jongerius, destijds de monopolist voor de handel in auto's van Ford in Nederland. Na de Duitse inval in 1940 viel die handel stil en werd in het complex waarvan alleen nog de directievilla en één bedrijfshal behouden zijn, een wapenfabriek gevestigd, dat een paar maal door de RAF gebombardeerd werd.
    Of de fietsroute weer afgesloten wordt wanneer de Wilhelminawerfhaven gegraven gaat worden is nog niet bekend gemaakt. Sowieso is het met het rustig fietsen langs de Kanaalweg over een paar jaar voorgoed gedaan. Afwachten is ook welke soort bruggen waar over het Merwedekanaal aangelegd gaan worden. Er is sprake van op zijn minst 5 fietsbruggen tbv een nieuwe woonwijk vol woontorens, met (dat is pas sinds twee dagen openbaar bekend gemaakt maar was al langer een gerucht) langs de Europalaan een nieuwe sneltramroute.
    Kanaleneiland en Transwijk liggen in feite centraal in de stadsregio Utrecht die in rap tempo uit aan het groeien is tot een metropool.

      @MrAronymous 3 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      For what traffic? This is a low-traffic pedestrian route. You have to realise that pedestrians will turn into cyclist a lot of the time if their trip distance gets longer. It's why you won't always find dedicated pedestrian paths outside the built up area where the cycle paths are wide and comfortable enough to walk on. Narrow sidewalks are an actual issue in the older city core where there are more pedestrians but there simply isn't enough space to accommodate wider sidewalks next to general traffic lanes. The 1.5m wide sidewalks in the video are enough for 2 wheelchair to pass each other comfortably.

      The sidewalks in the Netherlands do tend to be narrower than the sidewalks in Canada. In Canada the general rule is that there always needs to be at least 1.5m clear and level width to allow a wheelchair down the street, but in the Netherlands I often find sidewalks which wouldn't allow this, either because they're too narrow, or because there's stuff in the sidewalk, like poles or trees.

    • @OntarioTrafficMan
      @OntarioTrafficMan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think part of the problem is that so much of the cycling infrastructure outside the Netherlands is such crap. Even after it's built, most people don't feel safe using it, so it still seems like cycling is a "niche" mode of transport for "crazy cyclists". Or in the cases where the infrastructure feels safe, it is extremely inefficient with tons of stop signs, traffic signals, dismount signs, sharp curves and space shared with pedestrians, so people don't use it.
      Maybe if they had built an actual cycle path instead of just painted cycle lanes, a wider range of people would have used them and they would still be there.

    • @09conrado

      (The Dutch infrastructure fund is part of the national budget from which national roads, rail and water projects are paid. The infrastructure fund is by far the largest cost item of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management and has a budget of € 6.7 billion in 2021.)
      So the US with 20 times the people, 25 times the GDP and a crumbling infrastructure will spend 6.25 times the amount to fix and rebuild that we spend to mostly maintain in a one time plan.

The measure also sends funds toward housing, public schools and broadband internet access. @@TheDutchMitchell Yup, 3500 new appartements where there is now just a huge parking lot and industrial cubes for exhibitions. Right next to the old city centre and the busiest railway station of the Netherlands but also just over 2 miles from the prettiest forest near Utrecht, Amelisweerd. Those appartements will be very hot property. It will also help greatly to connect southwest Utrecht and Leidsche Rijn more to the centre. Planned to be ready in 2028. In 10 years time you can pick in what city centre you go for a drink, medieval Utrecht or modern Utrecht.
      "The new part of the center to be developed comprises two sub-areas: the Beurskwartier (this is the area around the Jaarbeurs, where the Oranjehal is still located and the parking areas P1 and P3 are located) and the Lombokplein (the current Westplein and surroundings). The plans for the Beurskwartier and Lombokplein include the construction of approximately 3,500 homes, interspersed with workplaces, culture, catering, local shops and other daily amenities. There will also be parks and new roads, we will make the Leidse Rijn navigable and we will extend the water to the canal."

      @@hendrikdependrik1891 have you been there recently? It is not bad at all, actually. For sure there is a lot of sixties concrete there, and therefore quite ugly, but it is not a no-go zone.

    It's telling that my first reaction was "Why would you film something so boring?". Spoiled rotten.

    It's hard to see this as a neat improvement as an american haha. In the US projects like these are a massive waste of public funds. Cycling in cities is common but mostly as a leisure activity for deeply annoying and self centered people.

      Masks are not required in the outside air only in indoor public areas.

      Yep. It's a mission impossible here. Nobody is taking our fresh air outside!

      Outside you are just virtue signaling with your mask. If you are sick, stay inside. If you are very old or immunity compromised, don't go where people are regardless of masks.

      @@riccardopalladino1889 Masks only became mandatory in indoor public area's on the 1st of December. Though quite a few people were already using them. I would estimate that at least 75% of the people in our supermarket were already wearing a mask. I've been using masks for a few months now.
