Cars are making people sick, I made the decision in January to stop driving everywhere and get back to biking.
It takes me less than an hour to commute 16 miles on Denver’s bike path network to from home. And I get my cardio exercise and in turn more time for the family since I don’t need to drive 45 minute in traffic then do a 1 hour workout after I get home.
I’ve lost 20 pounds and my whole life and health has changed because I don’t drive unless I have to.
I’m setting the example for my children and family in hopes to inspire them to take better care of themselves and learn to enjoy the city rather than curse it from the congested roadways.

@@bearmerica6668 sorry, but it doesn't matter what the circumstances are. It is a matter of what younare used to. Has to do with simple biological processes, at a greater elevation you need to change the blood chemistry because of less oxygen in the air. Same happens with moisture, temperature and the like.

Leuk, ik ben van dezelfde leeftijd als Mark, opgegroeid in Utrecht maar leef al twintig jaar in het buitenland. Was onlangs weer even terug in Utrecht.

Big thing for shops is that with a road for cars you will drive trough and not even notice the shops. Maybe only park in front of the shop where you need to buy something and drive off again. With everything being pedestrian zones you go by the shops at a slow pass where you can look in, browse the window, take notice. It helps sales. This also applies to restaurants being there. Theres room for seats and tables outside, less noise and pollution because there are no cars driving by. Making it a lot more pleasant to sit outside and enjoy a drink or meal. And when other people pass by and see the fun and cosy atmosphere it'll make them want to join in quicker.

FYI: The motorway they are talking about was a part of the traffic plans of the 1960's, which includes bringing motorways as part of the city ring road to the city. But after massive protests from the people the plans were cancelled, and the shortest motorway in the Netherlands was just a useless piece of infrastructure since the opening in 1974. At least about the size of the road. And following new plans about car traffic the road was removed to replace it with a city moat as it was before, together with a small road for cars and big cycle infrastructure. Watch this video about it: 'Removing a motorway to bring back the original waterway' of BicycleDutch.

It links the city with the beach 15 miles away, and all the villages in between on both sides. It’s really popular for commuting and leisure.Your video is very inspiring, a great guide for councils who are afraid to take the next steps.

Macomb, IL USA used to have a two lane state highway through the central city square where all the big semi trucks would get stuck. THAT was madness. We now have a decent route around but it still divides the town in two. Plans are to divert traffic around the city entirely which would help a lot with traffic. It has taken about 40 years.

In my country (Costa Rica) the state is adding more and more highways because of traffic, and in my opinión, this postpones the traffic in the next years. Meanwhile, California USA is still purchasing residential properties to widen roads… projects that restrict the traffic flow during construction and after about 5 years, it’s new car lane is open and that same road is instantly filled to capacity and the traffic flows just as slow 🤷‍♂️

Exactly. Ottawa, like Hamilton and Toronto, struggles to enact urbanist policies due to the Amalgamations of the 1990's under Ontario premier Mike Harris. Now those cities include vast areas of suburban and even rural districts whose politicians have no understanding or interest in urban issues, which prevents city councils from passing policies to make cities more people-friendly.

I applaud the Dutch for having returned the town and city centres to the pedestrians and cyclists. The dramatic, stunning difference warms the heart! Nonetheless, there is a real disconnect in the Netherlands. While reorganising town and city centres, they have embraced motorway construction. Motorways now crisscross the country, and the massive number of vehicles blights the countryside and metropolitan areas. The "Randstad" now resembles the worst of Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Houston. Getting people out of cars and improving mass transit (trains, light rail) must become the aim. (Ik ben Nederlander!)

@@jaspermay5813 That would be nice, but the word is used mostly to signal virtueness, to claim moral high ground... In the context of this story there is no exclusion of people with disabilities in the old situation. The good thing is that Utrecht got rid off the dominance of car traffic in the inner city and with that creating more liveable space for pedestrians and bicyclists. That has nothing to do with inclusion/exclusion but with common sense... so without all that stupid political implications.

@@jaspermay5813 The old situation was more stressful and dangerous for all pedestrians and cyclists, including people in wheelchairs. The best result of this project is that space dedicated for high speed traffic is reclaimed for recreational space and for low speed traffic. People in wheelchairs were included anyhow, the were no special aims to accommodate them other than the existing. So for me the mentioned inclusion is only virtue signalling.
