Surface Grinder Rebuild - part 1

  • Stumbled into an unexpected machine rebuilt.
    Follow along as I try to get more life out of an old grinder.
    Note: I'm not a machine rebuilder; not even a hobbyist one.. but I saw no
    reason why that should stop me. Comments always welcomed.

    I'm a carpenter. I'm used to errors in the range of 1/16". You are fixing stuff in the thousandths of an inch. Metal working tolerances are insane

    • @S3dINS
      @S3dINS 5 ปีที่แล้ว +57

      Czerno Alpha my engineering tutor told me years ago “Engineers/machinists work in the closest thousandth of an inch, joiners/carpenters work in the closest 16th of an inch and builders work in the closest field”. Stuck with me.

    • @K1lostream
      @K1lostream 5 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Well, 1/16th" is 62.5 thousandths of an inch, so you're kinda working to thousandths too...just quite a lot of them! Give yourself a break, I'm happy if I drill a hole within 5mm! And that's why the critters in my house use my shelves as slides!

    I'm always amazed on the similarities in methodologies amongst the trades. Your approach is the same as the first road I built. You used a block of granite and a dial gage to measure the contour of your work. I used a optical level and grade rod. You used a scraper to remove the high spots. I used a motor grader. Your error is in the .001 of a inch. My error is approx 1". Were doing the same thing, just different materials and tools and scale. Very cool! I love your channel!

    All that I can say is Thank You! For your unbridled attempt at perfection and also for speaking to me like an adult. So many are, I guess unconsciously patronizing in their teaching. I'm sure that the remuneration would be unsatisfactory for your level of expertise but MAN, if you where a middle school shop teacher the country would maybe produce more desperately needed craftsmen.

    I know this is an old video, but for anyone thinking of doing this as Tony did - think about mapping the ways of the mill independent of the table of the grinder. At 8:30 where he talks about the differences in the measurements of the table on the surface plate and on the mill due to the flexing of the of the mill from the weight of the grinder table. This CAN be very accurately known whether you can compensate for the deviation or not. Just use a long enough drill rod or something equally light weight yet precise in dimensions resting on the mill table, indicate along that with the grinder table in place (so that it will produce the effect), then use that information to adjust the Z along the length you intend to mill.

    It's curious how you're spending time with relatively simple tools to establish precision in a machine that will then be able to reproduce its own precision in any workpiece in much shorter time. It's like you're huffing and puffing towards a milestone where once you're there, your speed of producing such precise surfaces goes up by magnitudes.

    • @theplotkeeper7080
      @theplotkeeper7080 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The science of precision has always blown my mind. Once upon a time, we couldn't hardly make uniform sticks, and over time, through many iterations of machines, we came to levels of precision once thought unattainable. It seems counterintuitive, I would expect that, if I use an imprecise machine to make something, and then use that something to make a machine, I would be multiplying just how imprecise my measurements are.

It's getting a teardown and cleaning, and then I'm putting it together to enjoy it. I'm also going to enjoy all this hindsight and experience I've gained, until I'm in a better position to correct it or replace it. I'm still bootstrapping here, and don't even have power. Hah, similar problems with my 1958 Bridgeport. While they had not pumped grease into the Dzerks (I always spelled it with a "D", but google mostly spells it "zerk". Who knows?), but they had "serviced" the quill and managed to misalign the upper gasket oil hole to block oil coming from the cup. Sigh, rebuild the quill...
    Then, try to find an oil gun that clamps onto a Dzerk locally (this well before the www). Universally told I was wrong, finally had to finagle something.

  • @martineastburn3679
    @martineastburn3679 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    My two large English made surface grinders use 30 W (industrial oil) in zerk fittings - manual says so. I think a paint pot and a grease hose and fitting on it. Pressurize pot and there you are. I've seen Grease pots that way I wanted to convert to oil.

    17:23, Tony, mill it again and if it reduces equally then you know the tollerances of your milling.
    Obviously you want cutting with no heat and no chatter deflection.
    Or just drag your mill tooling over face with shims to verify accuracy first.
    Finally, never forget the bed ways (installed) , etc. do NOT climb down into a .ooo5 dip, it is not possible with proper shimming.

    Thinking you are well beyond novice now with your scrapping! Great video and love the way you challenge yourself and keep on going. Curious how long the table is and if you are going to polish the Gib at the end? If you are down to 3-4tenths in a run that long its a magnificent Job...Well Done! Looking forward to more.

    it's really fun to watch these old videos, you can really feel the videos humor developing. The timing is still very off, but the style is unmistakable.

    dumb question: when you laid the grinder table on the table of the mill, why did you not check corner 2 corner or for warp of the grinder table? seems like it would be a logical first step to do since you want as accurate of a result as you can get
