  • It’s the age old question: What is the best midrange in disc golf? In this video I test out a handful to attempt to answer that question.

    If I were designing a midrange, I'd want one that just auto goes in the basket. I think it being made in recycled plastic guarantees this is possible.

    My favorite thing in a stable midrange is a disc that is truly neutral. Has no turn, even in a headwind, and no fade if thrown flat. I used to be afraid of my Mako 3 because it felt so touchy with the release angle. But now that I’ve been working on my form I find myself reaching for it more and more. Whatever angle I put it on, it holds all the way to the ground

    • @TrashPandaDiscGolf
      @TrashPandaDiscGolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I definitely love a disc with the perfect touch and Mako 3's are fantastic, but I'm personally biased to a disc with a small, reliable fade for the best "all around" - short and long range, high and low power, etc. (All that said, my form could still use a ton of work 😂)

      @@TrashPandaDiscGolf haha to be fair, my go-to is a Vibram Ibex (Buzzz). So right with you there, just been learning to trust the Mako3 recently and it’s been fun 😎 🥏. Both my Ibex and my Buzzz turn over in a headwind, so I always go Zone instead. Mako3 might be a second option if I can get it down

The only time I don't use it is when I grab a San Marino Q Sentinel for headwinds and a a bit more overstable. Good luck finding any of those though.

    I just love how the Compass always gets overlooked. It scores second to the EMac Truth but doesn't get a mention. In video after video that I've seen, the Compass is always regarded as a does-everything-well midrange, and then gets passed over. Personally, I've not thrown anything that can match it. The Compass holds almost any line, is absolutely reliable forehand or backhand, has great glide and yet holds up in moderate wind. I get better distance with my Compass then with an EMac and more consistent lines then with a Buzz. About the only thing I've tried that can compete are Rocs, but I hate the way they feel. The Compass is one of the all time greats.

    I'm not super experienced, entering my 3rd year of disc golf this coming April. I have so far thrown the Buzzz, EMac Truth, Compass, Kaxe-Z (pronounced Kah-k-seh - saeta in Swedish), and I had a flirt with a Roc3 for a while too. My go-to is definitely the Kaxe-X, but I love all the others too. It truly is subjective, and so far the only midrange I've aced with is the EMac Truth. I look forward to every episode you post, to see your progress and see where you end up in your recycled world. Great video as always! I recently got my first very overstable mid (Innova Caiman) and in just one round it's got a slot in my bag. I never realized how useful it would be to use a disc that I can NOT torque away on accidental anhyzer, and it still goes super straight but with a solid fade finish. It's certainly not replacing my Buzzz anytime soon, but overstable discs are quickly becoming some favorites of mine.

    I've been playing for so long and have gone through so many mid-ranges. Recently I've settled on 2 - the eMac Truth and a Buzzz SS. These discs can shape a wide range of shots and the Truth basically functions like a longer Buzzz for me - they feel completely different in the hand, but oddly are both comfortable to throw both BH and FH. I'm old and have a noodle arm, so your mileage may vary. Love your videos Trash Panda! 400 feet with a mid? Insane!

    Any mid that has a nice reliable fade is my jam. I bag 2 lucid Truths. That 0-2 is in beatable. If you could turn a katana or a tern into a mid rage so you get that huge flex but still have it fade back at the end, that would be sick. Keep up the good work.

    Kaxe/Kaxe Z will always get my vote due to how comfortable they are BH and FH. My issue with most of those midranges is the FH comfort. It would be neat to see a Kaxe type disc dialed back to a 4.5!

  • @smtx11
    @smtx11 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    As others have mentioned the MVP Reactor is the best overall mid I've ever thrown. Does exactly what you want it to do. Shallow, not too stable, not too understable, holds any line you put it on. And as long as you don't throw a massive anhyzer it will always fade out a bit. I know you're only after wing shape, but try the Eclipse 2.0 glow one, feels better than the Neutron to me. I like the Kaxe Z but, but surprised it's in this list. I find it to be more of hybrid mid/fairway as well. Keep up the good work!

    I love Kastaplast, and as soon as i threw my first Kaxe Z it went in my bag. However, it's a Midrange driver with the sharp edge, kinda like the Zombee from Discraft. Kastaplast mids are the Stal and the Gote. That being said my faves that i have thrown over the years: Roc3, EMAC Truth, Claymore and my current bagger MX-3 from Prodigy. So i think it's really just feel, for every disc. Finally i will say that the Kaxe Z really likes to fly at the basket. I swear i'm gonna hit and ace with mine someday.

    I throw, like, 5 different midrange molds depending on the situation. But more often than not I reach for my Star Roc3 or my Star Mako3. My Roc3 isn’t nearly as overstable as the 3 fade rating would suggest and I can even get some turn on it if I huck it right. It just flies straight with a slight bit of fade. Mako 3 is good for even straighter shots and anhyzers

    I love my Truth and my Roc3. Also to mention the Innova, Mako3. Out of those three I would say the Truth is my all time favorite.

    Love my Innova DX Cheetah, even though it is creeping up to a fairway driver. It can just fly straight or you can use the -2,2 you angle around some obstacles. Love it as a putter in a windy day. So maybe like a slower version of that, one that has some versatility in the ways you can use it.

      I think if the flight #s were something like a 4, 5, -2, 2, that would be amazing, and let me know if you need help testing, i'll gladly be a guinea pig here in Utah

    My favorite is a heavy latitude 64 fuse. I have a light fuse and it is really really understandable. Terrible in the wind too.

    There'd be so many intricacies to making a disc launcher. You'd need to be able to vary rpm, launch velocity and disc angle (both hyzer to anhyzer and nose angle). You'd also need a way to mount the disc that would be able to accommodate different diameters, rim widths, heights, thicknesses, etc. Can you tell I've thought about this before?

    For my midranges I like pretty flat tops so that I can comfortably use them forehand and backhand. Incidentally, my go-to midrange is a Lucid Emac Truth.

      With nothing from Kastaplast in the 5 5 0 2 window, it was either go up to a KaxeZ or down to a Gote.. A beaded Svea would have been even closer!!

    ive been throwing a roc3 for a really long time. i always loved the feel. but it was never really comfortable forehand, then i switch to the buzzz and had the same issue. 2 weeks ago i bought a lucid emac truth. and i LOVE that disc. its pushed my mf roc3 outta my bag. id love to see a bead and a flat top. with a nice neutral flight. that way it holds the line its put on.

    something that holds an angle till the end of its flight and then hyzers out a bit. so something with a little turn but also stable enough to come out every time.

    I love the emac truth but have removed it for a Buzzz and md4. The Buzzz is a great disc and always surprises me but I have it in zflx so it's unbreakable and more stable. Plastic type makes a huge difference. I recently got an mvp reactor with their awesome glow for night playing but am very impressed with its capabilities so I may kick the Buzzz out for it. Which says something. How many discs did you lose throwing into that field of snow? Haha

    Rancho Roc and Roc3 are the best midrange molds ever made. As much as other companies try to copy the Roc they can't ever seem to make one that can be cycled in base plastic. Huge disadvantage to all other molds.
