First off, big shout out to Swanky for make such great videos. So the term "beginner" can cover a lot of ground. I have found that the distance you throw is what matters when choosing a disc, not how long you have been playing. I know people who have played about a year and throw 200' and others that throw 350' or more, that's a big difference when it comes to how a disc flies for you. I can only max out at about 250'. If you happen to throw in that 200 - 250 range, the disc Reid chose as number one will not be the best choice for you, at least not as a straight fairway. I have a few of the discs in this video so just wanted to let you know how they fly for someone with my distance (or lack thereof). 2 Neutron Craves (158 and 173 gram) 2 Rivers (159 gram Opto Air and 173 gram Gold Ice) Essence Neo 175 gram The Essence is pretty overstable for me. If you have a 200 - 250' arm, this is not the disc for you. If you have a 300' or better arm, it's probably about perfect. I bought it because of videos like this but found it mostly unusable. I could use it now as an overstable fairway, but that's not what we are talking about here. The River...freakin' love this disc. The absolute best fairway I have found for my arm speed. The Opto Air is slightly understable for me but not not too much. The Gold Ice is almost dead straight with practically no fade unless you put some height on it. The Crave, another great disc. The Neutron Craves are not as stable as the Neo Essence. I think Reid was throwing a Proton which may be more stable than Neutron. The Crave flies exactly like the Gold Ice River for me but has a reliable fade where the River just finishes straight. For me it has been very difficult to find a fairway that doesn't fade at the end. I play a lot of woods golf and since I don't have the arm to clear a lot of the tunnel shots, I really need something that won't fade out of a narrow fairway and leave me with a scramble shot. The River is the only disc I have found that will do this. Also an honorable mention to the MVP Relay. I actually like it better than a Crave for what that's worth. I have tons of MVP/Axiom discs and the Relay is amazing for a beginner.
When me and my friends first started playing one of them had a river. We were all super jealous of the distance he was getting. It felt like his disc was in the air like an extra 2 seconds compared to the rest of us. Unfortunately, it found it's way into an actual river.
Shoutout the innova teebird!! been playing for about a year and having it as one of my first fairway drivers felt like a cheat code, i knew it would always come back and finish left no matter what :D
I would add the diamond to this. Incredibly great first disc. Very useful for shapes as well as a good long driver. The next step up from there is the Jade and it is a wonderful disc also. Good video! Great recommendations
Start with a max weight DX Leopard. (This will last you longer than they say and make a great first roller. Keep in mind Simon Lizotte throws the Genius which is much flippier than a max weight DX Leopard.) Once it flies it’s flight numbers add a max weight premium Leopard or Leopard3. Once it flies it’s flight numbers add a premium Instinct/Explorer (same thing). Season to taste. Add another Instinct/Explorer and so on. Your slower fairway lineup is complete.
The crave is my personal favorite control driver that I use the most. But I will clarify that the type of plastic you get it in is very important. The first one I got was made with proton plastic like the one you threw in the video and it was more of just a straight driver I used when I did not quite need the distance that a distance driver would get me. The neutron plastic one I got changed my game. That one can hold what ever line I want it to for a long time and shape any shot i need with precision accuracy. The neutron crave is easily my most used disc in a round.
The glide in the Essence is incredible and the NEO plastic feels yummy. It’s so easy to throw. Also recommend a Maverick for beginner forehand in Prime plastic, nice and flat, easy to throw.
I'm a big big fan of the Innova TL. It's literally a TeeBird but with less fade and a touch of turn. I have it in Pro, G Star, and Star plastics and they're useful for almost any situation. And a Glow DX TL is excellent for beginners and intermediate players that want to start learning how to hyzer-flip.
i've been playing for 6 weeks and my favorite discs are the River, Saint, Underworld, Avenger SS, Rok3 and the Judge. I'll take a look at the Essence, thanks!
I’ve been playing for a year now and absolutely love the Discraft Undertaker and the Discmania CD2. I can throw each of them around 390-415 depending on the day and I can get that good flip up and glide to the right before finishing to the left flight out of them. Not beginner friendly because you do need some more arm speed, but definitely good fairways once you’ve been playing a little bit
I've been playing about a year as well. But I have a really weak throw, only about 250' max. The Undertaker is actually pretty stable for me. Just an FYI to anyone with a baby arm like mine.
I have tried quite a few Fairways as a beginner. The Gstar Leopard3 is my most consistent straight shot disc. I recently got the Essence and it flies similar to the Leopard3 with a bit more distance. I have not decided if I will bag the Essence yet.
The Infinite Discs Sphinx (I-Blend) was one of my first fairways that I really relied on. I still bag one for hyzer flips and for shots that sit right between distance driver and fairway driver distance. It glides forever doesn't fade too hard at the end and will sit on flat to slight turn for easy distance for anyone.
I love the discmania essence! I have a blacked out one too, but haven't thrown it, looking to sell it tbh since I'm afraid to lose it after my first throw lol. I'll have to look up the underworld though, thanks swanky!
I have a River and three Latitude 64 Saints (9/7/-1/2) in my bag. I love those on straight forehand shots on a calm day, but with wind or uphill I find less glidy discs better and more predictable.
Great video! F5 is comfy as a forehand disc, too. Question: which fairway drivers would most comfortably in a small hand? And same question for distance drivers. For reference, I love my Thrasher but the rim is too wide for me to get a good hold on it. Recommendations welcome.
I'm a newer player(8 months in) and just had to shout out for the underworld. It has been my best disc for long over turns I've had so many people ask me what I threw just because it flips so great for that turnover shot for us who don't have a forehand.
would highly suggest a hatchet as well. it is very similar but a little more stable. i loved my underworld and got a bit more power and found the underworld to be to flippy. switched to the hatchet and it is amazing.
i would also suggest a westside hatchet. It would be a step up from the underworld if you find that to flippy. it has been a staple in my bag since i started.
I have become a Lat 64 fan. I still throw a Champ Leopard 3 but I also bag an Opto River and Opto Maul. They both go a long way with my weak arm and the Maul just flies VERY straight (doesn’t really fade much if at all if you don’t but a lot of height on it). The River gives me some turn. The Opto plastic is really nice and adds a bit of stability to the discs. Also LOVE my Jade.
I'm a casual player and bag a star tee-bird at max weight and its really over-stable for me. Use it for hyzer shots under 200ft where I need to have it dump hard left. A recently picked up a Star Leopard 3 and a Star TL3 at around 170g and really love throwing both this disks as straight flying fairway drivers.
Try a DX TeeBird. I’m definitely a beginner and use a DX Teebird that I get a little turn out of thrown flat and can flip up to straight. I bag a luster TeeBird that is a meat hook compared to the DX.
Maverick and Essence are my favorite disc discoveries ever. I love Teebirds but mostly once they’re broken in, the Maverick fits that spot OTB perfectly!
I am always so shocked when I see the Essence is one of the only discs with inventory left on the shelves. It is my absolute favorite driver I’ve used in the last year and a half. Such a good underrated disc.
My wife gave me her insanity a couple of months back and I'm hesitant to throw it. Do I use power grip or fan grip? I ask myself. Then my son yells at me and I forget. 😁
@@aaronmayhew2.0 I only power grip wider rimmed drivers. Trying to power grip mids or putters gives me very poor control of the disc. What happens when I try is my middle and ring finger hit the flight plate and naturally stop. That's called a pinch grip. But some people say fan grip. To me, a fan grip is with fingers extended. Edit: so yeah, I power grip the Insanity. But if you have bigger hands, that might make your grip unstable.
I’ve been playing for less than a year and some great ones for me have been Lat 64 Opto Sapphire, Discraft Avenger SS and Hades, and Innova Sidewinder. Higher speeds than these discs, but they really taught me power and angle control. 400’+ with the Discraft discs when I hit it correctly.
Beginner here. The Mavrik is great 7 4 -1.5 2 as it gives great feedback. I feel like it helps my form. The Heat is still good. Though Id say the wind beats me up if I'm not careful.
I would say the River is a mixed bag for beginner just because it's so susceptible to wind with all that glide. Great for woods play but for open field I would say it can be way to flippy to wind. I would replace it with like a L64 Diamond, little faster with less glide, or as a few people said a DD Maverick which is a great disc in like Fuzion for starters.
I know the Valkyrie says "distance driver" on it, but it's a fairway driver in my book (so is any driver 10 speed or under), and it's probably the best. Slightly more understable than another personal favorite, the Axiom Insanity, and it lines you up perfectly to move onto a Wraith when you want to move up to the big boy drivers.
I found an F3 at a course that was half burried and decided I would try and throw it out. I immeditaly fell in love with it, and no disk has helped my begginer game out more then that disk. I throw the H3v2 now that I have upped my arm speed, but I can't recommend the F3 enough. Shits dope
Undertaker for me is a long Buzzz and we know how reliable a Buzzz is, it's such a good straight fairway that I had from day 1 and bag 3 now, they are incredibly good
Love the Axion Virus. Now just because of availability I can see not including but this disc replaced the faster Innova Mamba in my bag when I was starting out and I still have 2 in my bag due to my slower arm speed.
Ok, I really new to Disc Golf and now addicted. However, I can only play forehand (backhand I'm clueless); My typical shots fade to the right (sometime really bad); The discs I bought to learn were Destroyer, Mako3, Aviar. The Destroyer keeps really turning over to the right...like a slice... even if it starts out flat. I know my form must be terrible. Question, being that i throw forehand, which number sequence should I be aiming for? Overstated, Understated, Stable? Any advice would be GREAT! Any disc set-ups would be great... My short game is good and I par most holes, but my distance SUCKS!!!! :( Thanks everyone...
The River (opto, 169g)!! The best disc among my discs! And yes, I'm a (poor talented) beginner! It goes almost ever how I want; only, now that it is quite beaten up it has taken a major understability...
You forgot the MVP Volt. It might be slightly overstable at first for beginners but it does have some flip to it so once a beginner starts to see that part of the flight they have graduated to intermediate. And then the volt is really going to shine as it becomes more and more of a straight flying discs. I’m an advanced player but I’ve been bagging one for years and it’s still my favorite and most used disc in my bag. I actually now have 3 with different levels of stability.
Personally, the DD Maverick was the first fairway driver that worked for me; it is very versatile. Also, the Innova Valkeyrie is pretty awesome! The Saint by Lat 64 is harder to throw but it does have a glide of 7
SAINT!! I just put one of these in my bag and they aren't kidding about the 7 glide. It wants to fly for days! I'm digging. My favorite fairway driver. I use my meteor for everything inside of 300 feet. Another good glider😁
Ive played for a year at this point, I still consider myself as a beginner to amateur. Overstable discs have been my go to, they always do the same, but I will say this! If you are a beginner and you are reading this. Dont throw overstable to begin with, be humble with speed and stability, it will help you in the long run. My favourite discs are prodigy F2 and mvp volt!
Beginning discer here. Played one round w/ my son in law in SC. All of the videos out there are for right handed folks. I throw from the dark side (left) what will these discs do for us guys?
I didn't have time when I was younger , but now I've had a stroke . Now I'm looking at my sister Karins "Stryker fairway driver" . It has four letters and four numbers S8 G5 t 0 and f2 . What are these letters in combinations of numbers and letters and what are they standing for?
Good vid and recomendation .but you showed a Night strike 2 instead of a Jackal. Way different discs. Add too your list the Mantra by thought space discs. High glide and easy to control for newbies or noodle arms like me
As a beginner who throws only 150 on average (maybe 200 max), I love the River, but I have a hard time getting the Essence to go straight unless I'm throwing into the wind. Interestingly, I throw both just as far. The River has great hang time but doesn't go any farther.
Bought a misprint Opto River today for $10, I think perhaps the best tip you gave in this video was giving positive commentary on misprints. Most of my bag (about 20 discs) is either misprints or bought used from friends.
I have a Crave....Not much of a fan.....ill give it the old sidearm collage try and see.if i get more use out of it.... Ive been told the Essence would be good for me...im not a beginner but my arm is pop gun power like many new players unable to harness any pop they may have...... I'm going to guess the 6 glide is why I'm being recommended the Essence
I use Insanity. Very straight and workable fairway. -2 stability makes in beginner friendly, but it is not super flippy still so ut allows some arm speed also.
Note to beginners: The F5 in 750 plastic is just the tiniest bit understable for me, for refrence my gold distance is about 350. As a beginner I used a slightly worn in F5 for overstable shots and on windy days
I dont know if ive just been unlucky, but every teebird ive ever thrown has been all beef. Like, 7 4 0 4 feel. Ive theown friend's teebirds that were straight, but every one i buy is a meathook.

The Maul is 7 glide. Love that disc
I’ve been loving the Discraft Stalker. Been playing less than a year and it’s been great for me on backhand throws and also learning forehand
Star TL3 is an awesome disc. Less fade than a Teebird. Longer than a Teebird3.

just saw the crave in the video, also want to put a good word in for that. Especially sidearm like you said!
Teebird no doubt the first disk I reach for
Love the Essence, was a gift when I started and I have been throwing one ever since!
I would add the diamond to this. Incredibly great first disc. Very useful for shapes as well as a good long driver. The next step up from there is the Jade and it is a wonderful disc also.

Awesome review. I was losing my mind until you gave some love to the TeeBird - it's such a great disc.

I’m an advanced player but I’ve been bagging one for years and it’s still my favorite and most used disc in my bag. I actually now have 3 with different levels of stability.
Great video man
thanks
The Latitude 64 Saint is 9 7 -2 2
control driver
It’s a beast I’m buying another one.
@@aaronmayhew2.0 Dude, you are not lying about the Meteor. That thing flies for days. Love that disc!
I absolutely love and go for my 175g Valkeyrie every time I want a disk I can throw moderatly hard and will fly near strait as an arrow!
Love the Saint!
I'm very curious about that River with the 7 glide.
I actually agree about the essence. You can do most of what you need with that one disc
I use underworld and for beginners I highly recommend in basic plastic which has flat top
Discraft Heat is bit faster but doesn't need that much more power than 7 speed. It's flippy disc but Will go longer on bag If play on wooded courses.
Just started playing. The genius is my go to. The dragon is my favorite if there is water. It floats.
I love the maverick as my go to but I def use my essence too
Double shoutout! 😎
High glide and easy to control for newbies or noodle arms like me
I noticed that disks made by MVP including the axiom line or more over stable that other discs with comparable numbers
As a beginner who throws only 150 on average (maybe 200 max), I love the River, but I have a hard time getting the Essence to go straight unless I'm throwing into the wind. Interestingly, I throw both just as far. The River has great hang time but doesn't go any farther.
No Eagle?
I would argue the for begineers classification would be the reason it wouldn't make the cut, but 100% a quality fairway.
Great disc, but definitely more intermediate. I’d say the Eagle is even more advanced than a Teebird!
Bought a misprint Opto River today for $10, I think perhaps the best tip you gave in this video was giving positive commentary on misprints. Most of my bag (about 20 discs) is either misprints or bought used from friends.
I started off with a DX eagle
Tried an underworld once, didnt really like the feel. My favorites discs as a beginner were a dx cheetah and and opto river.
Opto Explorer is the ULTIMATE beginner disc. i could prob write a 20 page essay on why. (but i mostly agree with your list tho)
the river flies like a putter for me :D
The. Crave is awesome. It’s my workhorse
I keep a light River (157 g) in my bag for tail winds. Absolutely bombs.
Excuse, but have you ever thrown the Discmania Tilt?
I got a teebirb but I would like to get a river too at some point.
My 1 year old cant walk, can they throw these... haha
Yeah one might have been lowballing it a bit Haha but ya know what they say.. sometimes ya gotta yeet before you can walk
Lat64 Saint
Is that luke throwing the forehand in the intro?
Essence changed my game after the river got too flippy!
