      +Tony DoMonte The problem is not that we don't know who the potential terrorists are, but the fact that anyone is innocent until proven guilty. Are we willing to give up on this idea? I think not, because then, the authorities will surely abuse it. If someone with power doesn't like you, they can have you arrested even if you didn't commit any crime. So with the innocent until proven guilty, the government has to keep track of all these potential terrorists, until they are ready to commit a crime. Only then they can arrest them, because they have the evidence that they were going to commit the crime. But the problem is there are not enough people to keep track of them all. Which is what happened in France. You need multiple people of keep track of 1 potential terrorist. I've heard that it takes 10 people for 1 potential terrorist. The french authorities knew those guys had extremist ideas, but they didn't commit any crimes, and because of the lack of people in the security agencies, they stopped monitoring them, in order to monitor other potential terrorists.

    • @micnor14
      @micnor14 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Tony DoMonte There's a bit of red tape to go through when investigations cross borders - even digital ones. There are ways of being anonymous online - that said - none of them are foolproof and most are just take a matter of time to track.
      It's not as simple as powerful governments just asking and in turn receiving requested sensitive information from foreign data providers. The requested data would entail access to an entire company's database with many and every person's private information at the hands of another country's government. There are ethics issues abound with this powerful access even *within* a country's _own_ borders let alone abroad. Then there's the problem of all the logistics involved with tracking people oversees. It boils down to ethics with privacy, and trust (or lack thereof) in power.
      You would be asking private businesses of all countries - friends and foes - to make all of their customer's private information available to another country's government.

    I'm a French guy studying in London when I heard the terrorist attack was currently happening I was with my English girlfriend. I first made sure my friends and family were safe and afterwards I admit I watched ratatouille with my girlfriend who never seen it. The reason is I didn't want to feel same fear and anxiety I had felt during the terrorist attack at Charlie hebdo ( which I've always been fan) and the kosher market ( which is the one my dad use to by kosher for are more religious friends).

    I'm glad there is anger and repulsion and heartache around the Western world for what happened in Paris. But the problem is we've seen this all before, and we've seen this response before. We can be very emotional for a few weeks, we say we stand for liberty and our way of life, we'll raise the flag of whatever country was targeted this time, and sing their national anthem, but when it comes to real action we become cowards. How many media outlets in the West reprinted the Charlie Hebdo cartoons? They said we stood for free speech, but they imposed blasphemy laws on Western society in response to that atrocity. We marched in the streets, we cried and said Je Suis Charlie, but we were only acting, to make us feel like we were being courageous. Nobody was Charlie because only a small minority has the courage to stand up for free speech in the West. And when the cartoonists from Charlie Hebdo had not even been laid in the ground yet, the Western media called them racists. Before the bodies from this latest atrocity had even been identified, there were many in the left wing press saying that this is our fault, as if we'd brought it on ourselves merely by existing and being free. It's an abomination. We have no courage to stand up for our human rights. And not just the courage to stand up against Islamists, but the courage to stand up against those in our own society that will say you're racist and that you deserve to die because a barbaric religion from the desert says so. We're watching our civilisation fall apart like the Romans, we don't do anything to defend it.

      Well, allowing these people to speak their opinions is,while perhaps not morally right, free speech, which is what the west (at least the US) is founded on. I agree that these ideas held by racists shouldn't be, but I don't think it's right to take some kind of affirmative action against them just for thinking that way. I mean, there is a significant amount of people more than racists, especially in a place like the US following some recent events. Maybe trying to teach and show them what's wrong is the right way to go, but shutting them away or trying to eliminate them is quite similar to their intentions.

    Aaannd cue the endless shitstream of misinformed political arguments. That ending line was hilarious though. Colbert is doing an amazing job

    I attended a highschool in France, in which stood the house where the man who built the structure of the statue of liberty lived as a child.

    How about starting each show with a minute for people in Somalia, Yemen, Syria, Iraq, Libya etc? Are us Europeans really worth that much more?!

      You care more about what happens to your close friends and family. So greater emphasis is placed on France. And I have no problem with that.

      Is France Colbert's close friends and family? If you personally feel that or if you really do have relations to France in a way you don't have to Lebanon then fine. But a TV show makes a big statement when they do this. It sends a message. It's more than making your facebook profile look like the French flag.

      +Sleepydog No, but Colbert is an American. And like I said most Americans have more of a "connection" towards European nations than we do to other ones. It's part of a common culture and set of values. The family reference was referring to a "family of nations" that share a common culture as we do with France.
      Another thing is, we expect bombings and people to die in third world countries. The reality is that we have become numb to those occurrences. This is in contrast to Europe, specifically France which hasn't had to deal with anything similar in over 70 years.
      You're right about it being a TV show. But he is an American presenting to an American audience. The above come into play in this situation. I'm in Pakistan at the moment. Here people have heard about the security officer slamming the school girl into the ground for example. But it's not their main focus and didn't make the news because it doesn't concern them. Lebanon and Kenya are not our main focuses.

      +Qwrty Forse We do know about what happened and wish for the best. But again not as important to us as a people and nation then what happened in France.
