"So she's not leading in the poles. But, remember, neither was Donald Trump in 2016." Unlike the US, France has a crazy system where they count up the number of votes for each candidate, and the one who has more votes gets to be President.
Dude! Shhhhh... This is an American show, hence there'll likely be Americans reading this. Amongst all that's already happening in the world, having the Americans waking up to the idea of an actual democracy could spiral things out of control!
There's something else that helped Le pen to rebrand herself and it's Zemmour, that man is soo extreme and the farthest right politician than Le pen looks now moderated compared to him. Also since it was her third election, she took all her lessons and built a stronger program that she was working on since 2012.
Weirdly enough, Le Pen is far right, but not Zemmour, because Zemmour is for a neo-liberal economy and Le Pen is more nationalistic, but yeah. Zemmour is definitely worse
" *One last* shot at the presidency" is a sweet, optimistic way to put it. She and her father (and even her niece now) spent their lives trying to become president.
Yep. I'm not counting on it being the last attempt either. And anyway, her niece will find her way back in the party eventually and pick up the stick, and she's going to be worse.
@@Arschlochterminator69 because a few times the candidates were being mean to each other. Nothing compared to a US debate, but still. France used to have candidates respecting each other during the whole debate.
Well Trevor I wouldn't say France has been the country we didn't have to worry about. This is a culmination of years and years of a far right drift (just as in other countries). Before Marine LePen there actually was her father Jean-Marie Le Pen.
Every Western nation has far-right politicians with damning manifestos; however, La Pen Sr's approval ratings were never as high or close to his opponents' as his daughter's ratings in this election cycle. That's what puts the future of France and the EU at stake here
Hey im french and i agree with almost everything you said except from the fact that you said that french people thought it was a heated debate between Lepen and Macron. We all thought (media and folks) the debate was dull and Boring and it also were the least watched debate ever in french history
As far as the French media and population is concerned, this debate was not considered intense. Five years ago, the debate between the two politicians was filled with personal attacks, they never let each other finish a sentence and especially Marine le Pen was widely criticized because she was considered aggressive. This time though, even the two candidates have admitted during the debate that they were both more calm and that they "grew up". It is also not true that Marine le pen still wants to leave the European Union (she wanted to in the last two elections) but her program is very euro-sceptic and she constantly affirm that she wants to give the french people more power by changing the EU. As a french citizen, I think that this election illustrate very well the division of our people. On one hand we have the voters of Emmanuel Macron who are in general wealthy and wants to see a strong and united Europe to strengthen their influence against the United States, Russia and China. On the other hand we have the voters of Marine le Pen who are exhausted of the social crisis my country is going through and are generally afraid and in certain cases even hate the massive immigration in France. Finally there are also the voters of Jean-Luc Mélenchon who had only 1.2% less votes then Marine le pen and is considered far left. His voters are generally looking for more social justice in the country by taxing way more the rich, take more the climate change into consideration and are also EU-sceptic. The decision of his voters is very likely to determine who will be our next president. I believe in a certain extend in the program of Macron and more importantly not in the program of Le Pen and hope that he will be elected. I didn't mention a lot of elements but these are the big lines, I hope you understood everything :)
@@gemelwalters2942 I also don't believe for a second that a politician like Le Pen genuinely changed her stance on leaving the EU. She seems to operate like US politicians so my guess would be that she would contribute to rotting the EU from the inside to persuade more and more people it's a bad idea and then she'll have the traction she needs to accomplish leaving the EU. See it ALL the time in the US. "This program is a waste and inefficient, vote for me and I'll prove it" *cuts budgets, fire experienced staff and experts, replace with business leeches, stall proceedings, pass bills to add pressure* "see I proved it was inefficient by making the situation worse, vote for me again and my policies."
She does still want to leave the EU, she just knows that it's not the best idea to mention it now that the consequences of Brexit are becoming clearer and the French electorate aren't necessarily going to be as easy to sway on the issue than before. What she wants hasn't changed, what she's saying and how she's acting has, purely to try win the election, like any politician. And for those who will vote Macron this coming weekend, they're not all going to be the wealthy or even the fairly well off, it'll also be everyone who does not want to see LePen in power, just like how he won the second round last time. The more wealthy tend to favour the banker, sure, but when the opposition is LePen you're going to have more than the well off who will vote for him. As for Melenchon voters, many might abstain altogether, or vote Macron to keep LePen out. I don't know how many are keen on LePen, even if some of their ideals are similar, the others might be hard to swallow. We'll have to find out this weekend. Quite honestly I'm a little scared, I am British by nationality, but France has been my home since I was a child. Don't want to go through Brexit twice XD
She's actually worse than her father. She just knows how to breed cats and put on a nice face, but she's full of hate and as mean spirited as her father actually was.
Back from the polls and watching this. I was so depressed this morning and the soufflé part really made me laugh. We have soooo many expression in french language based on food. This is not a cliché at all. And we love it! ❤️
From Europe: I like satire and certain kinds of comedy, and of course Trevor. However, this spot does not really explain, why a win of Le Pen would be disastrous to Europe (and make Putin happy). It will crumble the EU and weaken Nato - just what Putin desires.
He did mention her desire to leave the EU and get cozy with Putin. I think that while this spot was brief and largely comedic, it does make clear that she poses a threat to Europe. Well, did. She lost. Again. The French aren't foolish. They aren't as a majority going to vote for a bigot that clearly said she agrees with Trump. France is struggling with many issues but they never have put the likes of a Le Pen in office.
NATO is archaic and a puppet for US foreign policy. The US is now fighting a proxy war against a nuclear power and playing a dangerous game. France would probably be smarter than that.
If voting for Macron is like eating a leftover baguette from yesterday, voting for Le Pen is like eating a half chewed hamburger from the garbage bin. You'd think it's tasty, but so did the rats.
Succeeded in making me laugh with my poor French and European situation, thank you Trevor. By the way, a diagram in France is a camembert. Food for ever.
But as a Belgian of Lebanese and Iranian descent who has lived in Spain and Morocco with his Turkish husband before moving to Vietnam, when he said no other country would use their cuisine as a metaphor for politics, a lot of things came to mind, from wafelijzerpolitiek (Google is your friend) to Thatcher the Milk Snatcher.
So happy she lost. I’m a Republican lean slightly right but she was WAY to far right. She wants to ban religious clothing, leave nato, wants a French Russian alliance after the war……. No thanks.
@@j.m.3038 there’s no way lol she wants to leave nato, make an alliance with Russia after the Ukrainian war, and lastly, ban the hijab to “free women” but yet that literally limits what women can do but she didn’t want to ban any other clothing from other religions.
Same! Sadly, just like in France, most of the time is spent discussing the candidates instead of their ideas and program. And the 10 other candidates who were competing didn't even get a mention, while this is crucial to understand how the vote works.
Well, I'd disagree a bit. Especially in this case, I find it a bit ignorant too. How many US citizens are aware that France was very seriously discussing whether it should leave NATO ? With more than 50 % of voters that did vote in the first round for a candidate that does want to leave : the extreme right being financed by the russians and wanting to ally with them (even if they don't admit it) and the left wanting to get back to a non-aligned position in the coming back of cold war between USA and China... US came very close to lose one of their main military allies in the world and most of their citizen don't even know it. I am French, and this video was pretty funny and pretty spot on, our hope that it doesn't turn like the previous US elections (against Clinton) turned, is that the system here is 100% popular vote, so, Le Pen should loose, just like Trump "should have lost" the first time around...
I am a bit sad that they did not talk about Mélanchon cause that was an key point of this presidential campaign and it explains a lot about how mlp is positioning herself in this second round !

Exactly. Macron prevented it again unlike what he said in 2017 before he got elected. And she was the only candidate out of 12 this year who opened up about the issue.
@@karankapoor2701 Lol, I’m not a liberal, but thanks anyway 😂. I actually just thought the joke was funny. I listen to conservative and liberal news sources without trolling because I like to hear both sides of issues. I honestly believe that Biden and Trump revealed a lot of weaknesses in both parties. They also revealed a lot of weakness in the American people.
Le Pen has indeed spent the last 5 years making her image and her program more palatable, but at bottom she remains the same Islamophobic, xenophobic extreme-right nationalist. Toward the end of the debate, she mentioned her intention, if elected, to pass a bill prohibiting wearing the hijab (the Islamic veil) in public. To which Macron replied: "You are mad. This is going to be civil war!".
If you lived in a European neighborhood with a Muslim majority and experienced first-hand the problems that this entails, that joke would not be so funny. In Europe we don't have a problem with immigration, we have a problem with Muslim immigration for obvious reasons taht you Americans don´t have to deal with. You are the liberals and the feminists, you know how women are treated in Islam, in theory you should be the ones who oppose Muslim immigration, but for some reason you defend it and therefore you defend the inhumane treatment of women in that culture. That is an absolute contradiction that you should check.
The problem is how broken the elections are. Only a fraction of French want either of these candidates. A forth to be precise. People are not going to vote for the candidate they want but against the one they dont want. This is mostly why there are a lot of abstention and thus uncertainty in the outcome. This is sad because Mélenchon's team was so close to breathing fresh air to this country...
It's more than a third around 34,9% of registered voters that voted for either of them. Do you really think Melenchon could have won the second round? Macron would just have flipped around and gone all security to counter him.
To clarify, we're not mad at macron for taxes. We're mad at him for lying all the time (pretty much like trump did) and extreme police violence. It was a really tough election which most of the country not wanting either of Macron or Lepen. In the end 28% of french refused to vote that day.

No worries. Le Pen has no plan for the economics and wanted to get out of Europe when brexit was a new thing. She said people under 30 wont pay taxes so we asked about football player earning millions and aged under 30. She didn't know what to answer.
And when asked how she will finance all her great ideas. she only replies that all was taken into account by doing "savings" elsewhere... What a great vision and management for the future. At least Macron is honest on this point and says he wants to gradually push further the age for retirement WHICH anyway is not always followed. My father kept working until he was 70 y/o because he had skills his company could not replace so easily... AND he was happy to work more (and get more money). Not saying it is the case for everyone but I have so many examples of similar situation. Lots of people will complain "yeah but he is taking the place of younger generations..." Fact is NOBODY was willing to learn from him while he was still active, younger or older generation mixed because his job involved being VERY VERY meticulous and nobody would be bothered to do so.
The thing with Le Pen is that many people won't vote for Macron. His liberal policies have alienated the Left, which was close to getting to the second round. Basically, Macron hopes he can claim the Left and Far-Left votes to create a "Republican wall" against Le Pen. Many leftists, though, don't want to get fooled twice. This election is crucial for the future of Europe and the coalition against Putin, and I'm glad Noah took a brief moment to talk about it.

@@ryanweible9090 you're absolutely right, unfortunately many French voters won't watch international news and get another perspective. But even if they did, I'm not sure it would change their mind. The US has a sad history with racism, but at least you try to tackle the issue. In France, on the other hand, we never really addressed racism, be it against Jews before and after WWI, or against Blacks, Arabs, and so on. I'm afraid Right-wing ideas are going to prevail at some point (even if Le Pen loses). It actually scares most of us, and we try to act on a local level to change things.
Surveys predicted that Le Pen will get 40% in 2017, she ended up getting only 33%. Le Pen is now polling at 44% so I won't expect Le Pen winning this election given her performance in the debate.
She had no chance. The leftists and far leftists weren't going to switch their vote to LePen but to Macron. The far right voters largely did vote for her in the run off but they're still a minority to centrists and leftists and socialists and greens and communists.
And Macron wasn't exactly impressive in that debate. I agree she's a bigoted idiot but there's a reason so many of the French don't like him. He won not because they like him and his leadership so much but because she's a radical nutjob and her policies are monstrous. Well, you should see how the mainstream media all invite her, and how the supposedly respectable Macron and all the Right has been validating her views by behaving exactly like her. One of Macron's ministers told her on TV he found her too "soft" on Muslims. If I’m not mistaken, the far left Jean-Luc Melenchon almost came 2nd. So it could’ve been macron vs Melenchon in the second round but he’s anti-Europe too.
He's never been anti-Europe. He's anti anti-democratic EU with a Parliament with no economic power and a European Commission with far too much power. He's a socialist, so of course he's against capitalist principles being written in the European constitution.
It's very distressing to see how much more the world is tilting towards being ultra -nationalist and far right. This isn't just in France. It's everywhere. It's like after the second ww and then all the globalisation that followed, instead of intermingling with each other and accepting cultural differences, all that people learnt were to highlight how different they are from others and then huddle back even stronger to their "own" clans. It's not surprising why the far right is on the rise. What is surprising is that the lefties and moderates act surprised. The problem with "accepting cultural differences" is that it's one sided.

Not that many people genuinely like her but there's been a very strong dissatisfaction with Macron's presidency (covid didn't help, granted). That even far-left folks are willing to vote Lepen ever since she made sure to change her program and its policies.

Besides, unlike what seems to be most people, I can actually understand that the EU helps more than it actually harms at the end of the day. Guaranteeing a certain level of standards aside (worker's rights, food, health and safety standards, etc.) the EU does have a rather important global influence. GDPR, making websites actually ask before planting cookies and trackers on your devices, at least trying to protect your online data, more than can be said for many other places. The Russia issue is complicated, frankly I'm also annoyed and disappointed that they haven't done more sooner to cut off Russian oil and gas, though individual member states are starting to finally. But I can also understand the want to avoid directly causing an energy crisis practically across the continent just to continue an economic war against Russia which is already escalating enough as it is. This debate betwen Macron & Le Pen actually was one that got the less view in all the history of political debates broadcasted on French television, just to get an idea how people didn't care. Neither was it tense, Macron is so sure of himself he didn't even make a proper campaign, his strategy rellying solely (exactly as it was five years ago) on the fear of Le Pen, a dangerous strategy; while Le Pen try to appear like a friendly face able to oppose Macron. We, in France are in a really deep mess, because Macron isn't a friendly face either. Sure, he is far less a threat to everyone, but is still verry damaging, people are legitimately tired and scared of him and this is one of the reasons Le Pen gained so much votes. Macron also has ties and sympathies to the far right, wich kinda blur the differences between him and Le Pen in the public eye. To summerise, French people are discouraged by this two clowns because it feels either of them in power would deeply damage the country and the economy, people don't want to vote for them, and are confused regarding wich would be less damaging.
In India even people who don't really like the ruling party vote for it because the alternative is an extremely weak, very confused opposition. You have to pick the lesser of the two evils.

Another fun fact: the electoral campaign pamphlets showing a photo of Le Pen shaking hands with Putin were subsequently destroyed, citing a "printer's error"...
Obama also had meetings and shook hands with Putin, everyone does. And where is the denunciation of the Biden administration of the atrocities that are happening in China right now? Now about immigration France is to a point you Americans don't know since you have very separates communities. But France is a centralized system, and a much smaller country. It's a question of time before a civil war explodes. Half of the candidates (and there were 12) actually proposed a restriction of immigration : this is not far right at all. But the Americans understand one thing : Macron is your puppet and has been in the last 2 years.

We certainly did. Merci.
Macron has a lot more voters than there are wealthy people in France. Even if you use Holland's definition of wealthy.
So I'm curious is Marie Le Pen also not considered a wealthy elite? I'm having trouble seeing how she represents the common folk more so than he does
@@gemelwalters2942 I also don't believe for a second that a politician like Le Pen genuinely changed her stance on leaving the EU.

He did mention her desire to leave the EU and get cozy with Putin. I think that while this spot was brief and largely comedic, it does make clear that she poses a threat to Europe. Well, did. It's bureaucratic, slow, complicated, political, but still, I prefer the idea of Europe in this ever more globalised and interconnected world than being alone. More places in the world are forming trading blocs than aren't, countries are far better off working together with their neighbours than not. Also having enough sway to basically enforce all phones/tablets/etc are charged all with USB-C cables in the future, reducing the environmental impact of needing several chargers for several devices.
Two more notable things the EU has helped do recently.
Nobody wants world war three. And that very well might happen anyway, especially if it escalates worse.

I'm tired of this war. It should end. Oil has tripled here in Kenya. Economics is crazy but the war should end
Mate, fuel prices have increased everywhere, not just in Kenya. Even food prices have skyrocketed since Ukraine and Russia jointly produce 14% of the world's wheat. None of this, however, will get Putin to cease his invasion.
Even if the war ends I don't think oil prices will go down.
I can understand people being tired of Macron (please don’t elect Le Pen though), but… scared? Could you elaborate?

You did not mention two essential points: 1. Macron and his ministers have sometimes deliberately made the far right rise. 2. The equivalent of Bernie Sanders was 400,000 votes away from beating Le Pen to reach the second round. Basically, this means that France is divided not in two, but in three: Macron, Le Pen and Mélenchon. Which will count for the legislative election coming up.
@O. B. Not giving your vote to le Pen and voting for Macron are two different things. Not voting for either of the two toxic morons is actually heading his advice.

It's troubling that the Front National remains this popular, but they've come close before. But the French have ultimately always united against her father and herself. 8 candidates were already eliminated, and their voters are most likely to vote Macron. Unless they choose not to vote, but LFI voters are not going to suddenly flip their 21% to an overt racist. Yes there were some other radical right candidates, but the centrists, joined by the leftists should take her down readily. I don't see them choosing not to vote and risking the election of a Le Pen. Hopefully this is the last time she runs. They'll be others to take their place but the Le Pens can retire into oblivion once and for all.

Another fun fact: the electoral campaign pamphlets showing a photo of Le Pen shaking hands with Putin were subsequently destroyed, citing a "printer's error"...
Ah, yes, because the printer is the one who chooses the text and photos in pamphlets, always.
Obama also had meetings and shook hands with Putin, everyone does. And where is the denunciation of the Biden administration of the atrocities that are happening in China right now? What the CCP is doing is much worse than what Putin is doing, and not only do world leaders not denounce it, but they are China's trade partners or directly applaud and praise them like Biden and Trudeu. All politicians are hypocrites.
I am French, and it kills me how arrogant the Americans are when talking about French politics, especially Lepen, which was in fact not a far right candidate at all, amazes me. And I don't especially like her. To you Americans she's a fckng communist and she has a very leftist program economically.
So TV shows such as this one favors him, not even knowing what the local stakes are.Honestly watching this pretty much disgusts me.
You mean, that woman from the party that wants to tell women how to dress and all? Or am I mixing that up with Afghanistan? Yeah, great pick.
