    That vintage electric is a treasure! We've had a lot of conversations about erasers over the years (that's one reason why we don't get invited to parties that often). We still know a couple of artists who call Artgums "bread erasers", and a few who still have a stash of old fashioned typewriter erasers, the pencils with an abrasive eraser core and a brush on the end. If you find that the paper surface has been altered too much after erasing, an agate burnisher can compress and smooth a rough passage enough that it won't stand out too much from the rest of the page, and even accept more drawing media.

    • @ssavaart
      @ssavaart  ปีที่แล้ว +301

      Haha. I love it. I remember the ones with the brushes on the other end.
      Also. I looked for Large Marge on your site, but sadly she wasn’t available anymore.
      Thank you for having all the others. ❤️

      What is the shelf life of an eraser? 🙋 I still have not one but two of those Staedtler eraser pencils with a brush at the end, all in baby blue colour. They are indeed very abrasive (probably too dry, since they are from the 80s). My father used a typewriter and had many of those very thin hexagonal erasers with a little hole in the middle. They were probably made in the 50s. All part of a collection I was unaware I was forming. Hope I continue to be invited to parties 🤭 nevertheless.

    • @Blick_Art
      @Blick_Art ปีที่แล้ว +36

      @@berolinastrassmann Erasers can dry out and lose the components that make them pliable ("plasticizers") but we think storage conditions can play a factor. Typewriter erasers were always almost too abrasive for use in artistic drawing, but in a desperate moment, when nothing else works, it's nice to have the "nuclear option"

    I didn’t know electric erasers could get as big as Marge! I personally just use cheap eraser caps from the dollar store. The triangle shape lets me erase fine details if needed, but usually since I ink and color my drawings I just need something to erase my light pencil marks under the outlines. I don’t draw with just pencil anymore, but if I did I’d probably want an electric eraser too

    My favorite erasers of all time were some cat erasers my sister got me in middle school.. I never used them but one day a girl I had a crush on borrowed one and used it and I liked her too much to get mad about it and she was like “woah.. that’s a smooth eraser! Can I keep this?” and I tried it… it was better than the expensive art erasers and the perfect blend of smooth, sticky, and soft.
    My sister bought me a bunch more so I could actually use them and I used them sparingly for years!
    Still the best erasers I’ve ever used and I’ve never been able to find them again… i can’t remember the brand name and I’ve tried a bunch.. it sucks.

If the lead goes out, I steal some from another mechanical pencil(for some reason, some of my mechanical pencils feel better in my hand than others). If the eraser goes out, I just remove it and insert one from a used mechanical pencil. Happy drawing :)

Idk if you'll see this, but thank you for inspiring me to just throw stuff on the canvas whether I think it'll be good or not, to not be afraid to just kinda see what happens and be ok with making something I don't love. It's helped free me from the paralysis of perfectionism and I've finished two small practice paintings that I've been able to give away to friends who genuinely actually liked them! (': they weren't fantastic but they're my first two attempts at gouache in the first place so I'm telling myself to go easy on the criticism 😅 and I'm definitely learning things for next time lol like I'm afraid of highlights and shadows aaaand that gouache needs a binder on these canvases or it cracks heh but ya know, that's ok! I’m currently using the faber castell dust free eraser and it’s absolutely amazing. It erases almost everything, definitely the best one I ever used. I stole it in school but I found it on the internet for less than a dollar so it’s a really good deal.

    I bought the brush pens, pencils and watercolor sketchbook you use. Now I want a pretty colored kneaded eraser, mine is dingy grey. At any rate, I have no excuse not to get back into watercolors now! Thanks!

    There is an eraser from faber-castell which lets the eraserstuff roll up to bigger pieces. So that you dont have any dust (only the big things). I really like that one.

    Fun fact: in Australia we mostly call “erasers” rubbers.

    Large Marge looks like this old power drill I used to lug around that weighed like 3 kilos and would rip your arms off if you weren't careful hahaha love it!

    I typically use a pink eraser for large areas, and a little detail eraser. The kind that's like a mechanical pencil, but it's an eraser. I killed kneaded erasers like crazy, and electric would drive me nuts. I like to use a large makeup powder brush to make the eraser buts go away, while avoiding the smudging issue
