"Doodle" For god's sake Scott that's a full piece it only took you 90 minutes because of the medium and techniques and the literal decades of experience you carry around.
Gouache is so much fun to play with. Being able to lay down opaque layers, blend, and lay down transparent washes with the same medium is really user friendly. It’s like oil paint and watercolor had a baby, and gave us the best of both worlds
Like for real! You won't believe me that gouache cured my depression and is the reason I am alive right now. (I was too unhappy in life) One day I just grabbed the gouache paints lying around and I painted. It just made me soo happy that I joy, motivation and happiness that forced me that it is just too early to get bored in life! Gouache now is a medium of my heart!
Thanks scott! I tried picking up gouache a few months ago and did 1 piece but got scared off from people online talking about how hard it is. It’s refreshing to hear your positive attitude
I love gouache, its gotten me out of art block multiple times, because you dont need to think too much, and its actually fun. It reminds me all the reasons i love drawing!!
It’s very unique and interesting (in a good way) how you paint/layer mediums. I find it cool how you layer different colors that don’t seem like that they are there and it turns out so good.
I also am not a fan of the texture of acrylic. Even though it dries fast, I have trouble seeing if it's still wet, since it's still shiny when dried. Also, may I suggest a video on how to properly dispose paint water? I feel like it's a topic that isn't talked about much, since it's not a very glamorous topic.
Scott, you've become my art hero. Listening to your stories, seeing you embrace your autism, and how you approach art, it's really inspiring. I hope to be as comfortable with myself and my art as you are.
Hi Scott!! I’m a high school artist hoping to be an illustrator one day. It’s my goal this summer to try out as many new art supplies as possible, and gouache and oil paints are at the top of my list!! I’m definitely going to be referencing this video a lot when I first attempt gouache, so thanks so much!!
A 90 minute doodle is an understatement you truly know what art means, art is something unique there is no perfect and the amazing thing is that it's far from accurate skin color but you can see how it comes together to have that imperfect touch is quite a wonderful skill to have
I just wanted to say that after seeing your short where you said how you see skin tones and colors others don’t, that even though I can’t see all the blues and greens you do I think it’s so beautiful that you can see all these colors in people. ❤️ Thank you so much for sharing your worldview in your art and inspiring people. I’ve been following you for the last few years and my art has immensely improved, so thank you for everything.
Hey Scott! I tried Himmi Gouache a while back and really struggled to use it correctly. i sort of just painted it like it was a watercolour and it ended up looking just wrong. i kept it and retried it but am still practising and this helped a lot, thank you!
It’s my birthday today and I’ve just got my first case of himi gouache, I’m so excited to use it and learn a new medium! You really inspired me Scott I hope to be able to make some art as beautiful as yours and be able to inspire others like you did with me :)
I used gouache in college but never for taught how to properly use it and never picked it up again. Your video taught me more in 8 minutes than I learned in a year at college. And your voice is so soothing to listen to. Love your videos, I feel so inspired to make art again.
My husband bought me a himi gouache but I kinda lost touch to paint. He asked for a portrait of his grandmother for a wedding gift, I first tried with just pencil but I’m not quite satisfied with it so I’ll try using the gouache now. Even though he passed away a month before our wedding, I still want to do the portrait for him. I like your style and this video helps! Thanks!
A few things that have helped me in the past, not just for gouache but painting in general: 1. If you're using a reference, and it's in color, I'd recommend putting it in greyscale. This way you're focusing on the values and not just what colors you "should use" 2. Test your color palette on a scrap piece of paper, take a picture of it, and then put that into grayscale. I like to pick a shadow, midtone, and highlight as my 3 colors. I often find it hard to tell what inherent value a color has, obviously blue is darker than yellow but still. This way before I start painting I know how dark my darks are and vice versa. 3. This one's random but to preface, everytime I start a painting I want to try something different and I'm always scared to try it out. So just make a few thumbnail sketches and try out a few things and if you don't like it then just don't do it when you do the final piece. This might just be me but I'm weird like that lol.
I was gifted a gouache himi palette for my birthday, im predominatly a digital artist and this video helped me a ton. I was really intimidated by the forgein medium, but now I feel confident to go try it out and experiment! I think funnily enough, the way I layer my digital illustrations will translate well to how gouache lets itself be layered, like you showed off in the video. Base, shadings, light.... gouache lets you layer even lights on darks, which is awesome. Thank you for this awesome video!
I was just starting out on gouache (which incidentally, you inspired me to do), so this video couldn’t have been better timed!! Thank you Scott, this was really useful, but also just… cozy!
The way you color is so magical. The way you take a large variety of colors and slap them together to make a beautifully unique, yet cohesive piece is amazing. My favorite part is that it isn't magic at all. It's an accumulation of practice and skills to make any piece in any medium stunning - Also, the gloss thing speaks to me the more I think of it. It makes me think of posters or books that have a gloss that is a bit tacky(?) so if you rub it too hard it creates an awful squeak/rubbing sensation.
Every time I see your videos I think "wow, this art is so cool! I'll never draw stuff in a style as cool as this (don't want to say good because good is personal)" but then I need to remind myself that you have had more time practicing than I have had on this earth, I think, and that makes it feel... better. I love your art, I love the videos you make, and it inspires me to continue and try to get better and happier with what I create :)
Wonderful video! I’ve chosen gouache as my medium for the reasons you stated, and for its versatility with other mediums. I can underpaint with watercolor, marker, chalk and alcohol, along with gouache. I can dry brush gouache, float layers, double load colors (and triple load). Reactivating gouache can be tricky, but that you can is a boon. I really love the creamy texture and matte finish. It’s like painting with velvet. Plus, it’s non toxic, has no harsh smell, and easy to clean up.
as someone who’s only now is seriously about learning traditional art, this is absolutely helpful!! the process really helps and the way you explain helps so so much ! i am really thankful i found your channel ❤
I started to learn watercolor a little less that a year ago and man it's difficult, but I love it, definitely not for the weak, it's messy, like its fucking chaos my guy, and it is the first and only paint I use like one day I woke up and decided yeah I want to learn how to paint and chose the most difficult fucking medium I could have chosen, but the reason I chose watercolor is because of you, you inspired me to learn art, to do something else with my time than just sitting in the sofa, and as a neurodivergent young adult it was something I needed to find a passion a purpose even though I don't think I'll be doing it professionally any time soon it helps me sit down and do something that I feel has a purpose. Now I'm learning how to actually draw, not just print something put charcoal and trace it, I'm learning with both plain old pencils and charcoal too, I kinda feel like jack in the titanic every time I draw something It's pretty cool and messy. But for some time I wanted to learn gouache to, yesterday I bought a book about gouache to see more the technical side of things because with watercolor, even though I learned some things with your videos, I started by winging it and I still do honestly and even though ill probably end up the same way with gouache it's nice to have the person that inspired me to start making art teach me another medium, I can't wait to be over with my fucking exams so I can start learning and mixing gouache, watercolors, maybe an actual original drawing instead of just copying, developing a style I just can't wait, and who knows if I ever get the courage to post any of my art I'll make sure everybody knows your name and how much you meant to me. Art has really helped me in a lot of ways and now with the tragedy that happened in October to my dear home art has been a true friend, because it's getting pretty depressing to open my door and see the mud the destruction the pain the suffering the cars piled up on top of each other its just heartbreaking. I don't know if you'll ever see his comment, but it's nice to tell my story to someone, much love from Valencia.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I was messing around with my himi gouache and was hoping you would have the tutorial on gouache today! Just a question, what brushes do you use? And not just the brand, but what shapes and style?
This is a cool video - thanks for the comments and demo! I went from pencil/pen cartooning to digital art, to digital painting, and doing that got me to try acrylics, then more recently, a little watercolor. This looks awesome, somewhere in the middle of those which is what I think I am chasing.
Hey there! Have you decided what medium to do for Friday's video? You could do acrylics or acryla-guache, since it's something you have some experience with that. I don't know how much you like other mediums like graphite or crayons... I remember you don't like pastels! 😅
Right now I'm using gouache to paint animals for my final piece for year 12 and it's so fun. It's gonna be like one of those flip books where you can mix and match animals- BUT! There isn't a full set of an animal. You could have a fish's head, a gorilla's arms and a horse's tail, but not a full fish. It's gonna look so cool when I'm done. I like how gouache is very forgiving and opaque. My favourite part is when my brush is just dry enough so I can go in and add texture with my brushstrokes.
Gouache is my favorite! And I've been learning how to mix media lately. I like to start with a layer of watercolor, then add gouache, and then go in areas and soften them with soft pastels or define areas with dip pens and ink. I will also start with a pale blue pencil and not erase it, and I love the character it gives when you can subtly still see it at the end.
Mister Scott, i'm sure many people have said this to you already but you are an excellent teacher. You explain things so well and you always make sure to point out that making art should be FUN and to always do what works best for you. I treasure every piece of advice you share on these videos ❤
Scott you are a saint 😭 I love your advice and videos. I don’t know what you do but your videos manage to keep me constantly engaged! Thank you for your help!!! 💜💜
I like the way you talk and explain things. It really makes me understand more than others and keeps my attention much more. Thank you so much for sharing 🎉 also way more super excited to try my gouache paints after getting a little overwhelmed by something new
hey scott! ive watched your videos for a while now and i recently bought some himi gouache paints to experiment with because of your videos. you're such a positive inspiration for me and even after almost a decade of pursuing my art i still have a crazy amount to learn, and you've taught me a lot!! you're such an inspiration i love your videos so much. hope you're having a day as wonderful as you are 🥰🫶
Youre the reason I tried watercolor- and now why I'm painting with gouache! It took so long for me to get the courage to use my fancy new gouache paints, but I finally did. Im doing a series of paintings to get the hang of it of sea slugs!
Hi Scott, it’s been awhile since I’ve watched one of your tutorials and I loved this one. I’m switching to gouache for while well actually I use watercolour and gouache together. I’ve started the process of actually drawing something on the page before I lay any colour down whether it’s watercolour or gouache. My style is changing. I’m improving started to really pay attention to colour coordination and subject placement. I really really like this video. I love the way you spoke about how you were doing things and why. As always I love your work.
thank you for explaining in detail, im new to this paint type and love experimenting with all types of medias in my books and this cleared up a few questions i had about it in general :)
Hey Scott, this came out very nice 😊 You inspired me to try making the skin looking more vibrant and interesting so I tried to use more pinks and blues and purples and yellows and greens (...) in a digital portrait, but it just looked like he was beaten up 😅 I would love to know more about the way you're choosing where the colours makes sense. 😊 And I have a suggestion for you: There are waterbased oil paints from schminke. The line is called Norma blue and it is all vegan and environment friendly. Maybe you would like to try them or did you already do or heard of it? :) I haven't tried them but I plan to do. I want to try new mediums to hopefully find something to bring my passion about art back to life 😁 Thank you so much for always encouraging us ❤🤗 Greetings 🍀
Thank you so much for this video! I tried gouache for the first time a few days ago. I struggled most with waiting for the paint to dry between each layer because I'm impatient. I usually draw with fineliners, coloured pencils and markers so you dont have to wait. I love all your art ❤
Such a fun medium, I always enjoy using it and combining it with colored pencils is one of my favorite techniques to get more clarity and add more detail to a piece
Great video! I really learn a lot from your videos, I'm an artist too and your art is a great inspiration to me, especially your portraits, your way of art nouveau, the hair journal and more. I like the playful and colorful touch you add to your paintings. Btw, Doc looks great. Have a nice day!
I haven't used gouache much....a little bit. And then someone told me that your painting can CRACK! if you use gouache. They didn't tell me any more than that. And now I'm scared to use them. Have you had any problems with cracking? Can you talk about that a little?
this video is so helpful! im irrationally terrified of gouache but this seems more possible! is this Bristol paper? what's the best type of paper to use gouache? watercolour paper?
I have used acrylics for the longest time so I was at a loss on how to tackle gouache. Thanks for the nice overview! Definitely looking forward to trying out the material!
Hi Scott, watching you paint in gouache the other day my little auADHD suddenly understood how to do it. So at 70 I just received my first set of HIMI tubes and my first tin pallet because those looked pretty cool too. Now I'm off to try my first gouache landscape. Thanks Scott for the inspiration.
My favourite thing about gouache paint is how it subtly changes colour and texture as it dries. Often I’ve been ready to give up on a painting, walked away for a bit, and when I came back it looks way better because the paint changed so much as it dried.
Hey scott, I wanted to try out gouache but I didn't know how to use it. Thank you for helping me and for making this lovely video. Also do you have any suggestions for beginners and what paint to use? Do I just straight up buy himi or w&n gouache or do I start with another brand?
Hey Scott! This video helped me a lot! I don’t really use gouache very much, and I’m starting to use it more than I used too. This video really helped me understand gouache just that little bit more! I was wondering, as someone who just is obsessed with watercolour pencils, if you could maybe try them out! I’m fairly new to your TH-cam so I’m not sure if you have tried them already. If you haven’t I would really recommend them! They help a lot with adding that extra bit of detail, and can make masterpieces just by themselves! Thanks so much for making these videos!
I have such an itch to try gouache. I love the idea of how forgiving it is should I get distracted (i.e. mama to *young children*) and need to come back later. That said, I am so amazed by all the colors you see in the skin. I am colorblind and was mind blown by your descriptions. Skin sounds so lovely through your eyes.
Im getting himi gouache today!! Im so excited, I've used watercolors before, but i had to quit due to not being able to buy water color paper (got lazy and i cant drive by myself yet lol) finally im gettimg some and im so so excited!!
Thank you so much, I learned a lot. I am an artist but not tried gouache till today. So this was a great tutorial, amazing. I’m really looking forward to trying this. Now to create a subject matter n create a design.
Thank you, Scott. The eyes. This video helped me realize maybe I’m just not finished when I try to paint portraits. I am much more practiced in drawing portraits or using pastels. Somehow when that brush is in my hand, I feel limited to animals, flora & landscapes or still life. Doc’s eyes were really cartoony at first… but you kept tweaking. I just need to keep going. Thank you.
Bro ur colors are always so cool. They're so realistic but painterly. I wanna try to make my paintings look more like yours and I'll start by watching and studying ❤
I agree with you on the paint shine, I definitely prefer a matte finish. Also, something about blended graphite pencils, it’s just too smooth 😅 I usually leave it textured with scribbles and crosshatching
Nice piece. Very nice. I used gouache in design school quite a bit. Always used colored pencils with markers. Never occurred to me to use pencils with gouache. Brilliant!! Thanks for the tip. 😎
You convinced me that I *need* more paint that I really do not need …. Another rabbit hole?…. Probably! …I’ll have a few sets by the end of the year, I’m sure
That was amazing! I could write a book on the many reasons why and how much i learned from this. But i gotta go and noodle with my gouache! Thanks Scott!
For himi gouache users, it would probably good to know that if not cared for correctly it can mold ☠ but other than that i think gouache is an amazing medium and becuase of this video i was inspiried to finally buy another set to use and start painting again
"Doodle" For god's sake Scott that's a full piece it only took you 90 minutes because of the medium and techniques and the literal decades of experience you carry around.
Lol, but it's cause he is a MASTER of the art of sketch
Art sketches

It just made me soo happy that I joy, motivation and happiness that forced me that it is just too early to get bored in life! Gouache now is a medium of my heart!
Is it easier than watercolor or acrylics or ouls or it's a subjective thing? Thanks for sharing.
And it dries more slowly than oil.right?
@@leif1075might be subjective. Fkr me watercolor was the easiest
@@leif1075 im pretty sure oil paint dries slower, oil paint can be very slow at drying at times.
Hey Scott, I’m drawing Travis Scott right now
I'm drawing Sza
I’m drawing Kali Uchis
I’m eating falafel
I’m drawing Caitlin Clark
All the luck, everyone!
Thanks scott! I tried picking up gouache a few months ago and did 1 piece but got scared off from people online talking about how hard it is. It’s refreshing to hear your positive attitude

It’s very unique and interesting (in a good way) how you paint/layer mediums. I find it cool how you layer different colors that don’t seem like that they are there and it turns out so good.
There’s something implicitly satisfying about your brilliant line work and brush work…
You make lovely art :D
Thank you so much 😀

loving the contrast between cool and warm tones!!
definitely inspires me to experiment more :)
I have never mixed mediums! I'll have too try it foreal... I use alot of greens in portraits

I GOT GOUACHE YESTERDAY SCOTT HOW DID YOU KNOW??
He's a wizard. The day that I got colored pencils he made the colored pencils video
I made this video just for you. ♥
Yeah he's just all knowing 🤷
Once you become an art god, you are able to see and know everything that any and every artist is doing.
this inspired me even more to start with gouache. Beautiful color choices! Thank you for this video.

Hey there! Have you decided what medium to do for Friday's video?
You could do acrylics or acryla-guache, since it's something you have some experience with that. I don't know how much you like other mediums like graphite or crayons... I remember you don't like pastels! 😅

I saw your watercolor live! My suggestion for next medium: everything I know about acrylic!
I like the way you talk and explain things. It really makes me understand more than others and keeps my attention much more. Thank you so much for sharing 🎉 also way more super excited to try my gouache paints after getting a little overwhelmed by something new

I’ve started the process of actually drawing something on the page before I lay any colour down whether it’s watercolour or gouache. My style is changing. I’m improving started to really pay attention to colour coordination and subject placement. I really really like this video. I love the way you spoke about how you were doing things and why. As always I love your work.
if u haven't already, I'd love a video like this about watercolor :D
thank you for explaining in detail, im new to this paint type and love experimenting with all types of medias in my books and this cleared up a few questions i had about it in general :)
I really really want to get and learn Goudache it’s looks so fun and pretty this really informational and fun! It looks so good
Hey Scott, this came out very nice 😊
You inspired me to try making the skin looking more vibrant and interesting so I tried to use more pinks and blues and purples and yellows and greens (...) in a digital portrait, but it just looked like he was beaten up 😅
I would love to know more about the way you're choosing where the colours makes sense. 😊
And I have a suggestion for you: There are waterbased oil paints from schminke. The line is called Norma blue and it is all vegan and environment friendly. Maybe you would like to try them or did you already do or heard of it? :)
I haven't tried them but I plan to do. I want to try new mediums to hopefully find something to bring my passion about art back to life 😁
Thank you so much for always encouraging us ❤🤗
Greetings 🍀
Fun! I haven't watched yet, but i remember you starting to really play with these
How you grasped the impression in the eyes... It's incredible!
That was sooo helpful!!!
He looks like a blended rainbow in the face, and your video shows all the tones under the paper too as you layered. Lovely video Scott
Great video! I really learn a lot from your videos, I'm an artist too and your art is a great inspiration to me, especially your portraits, your way of art nouveau, the hair journal and more. I like the playful and colorful touch you add to your paintings. Btw, Doc looks great. Have a nice day!
Another great video! Thank you for sharing you art knowledge! I think I might try gouache soon 😄
I haven't used gouache much....a little bit. And then someone told me that your painting can CRACK! if you use gouache. They didn't tell me any more than that. And now I'm scared to use them. Have you had any problems with cracking? Can you talk about that a little?
i gtg right when the live start TvT
Oh, thanks Scott! For the motivation to get my stubborn, lazy butt to get to work.😁
This video inspired me to buy gouache for myself, and it actually helped me find my art style. Thank you, Scott
this video is so helpful! im irrationally terrified of gouache but this seems more possible!
is this Bristol paper? what's the best type of paper to use gouache? watercolour paper?
I can’t WAIT 😆
Just a reminder that art always starts off weird. Dont be dissapointed ❤
Been waiting for this!! Super interested in gouache since the first video I saw of you!!
I just tried gouache and I absolutely love it! You’ve inspired me to try it and I think im gonna use it more often!
Recently started using gouache and Scott speed paints have been more than just helpful ❤❤❤
You should have called the video: "8 Minutes acrylics diss-Track"
😂
My favourite thing about gouache paint is how it subtly changes colour and texture as it dries. Often I’ve been ready to give up on a painting, walked away for a bit, and when I came back it looks way better because the paint changed so much as it dried.
Yay I’m so happy you did this video I just got new gouache paint and this really helped me!!! Thank you for the help!! 😁
I did try them about 2 years ago.

Great, Scott! ❤
Thank you.
Yeah. Sometimes you have to keep going back to your reference to see what's different. Just keep comparing till you find what's off
Bro ur colors are always so cool. They're so realistic but painterly. I wanna try to make my paintings look more like yours and I'll start by watching and studying ❤
And then applying it
It looks so cool :D
Scott, you're the best art teacher I've ever had ❤
I am honored. ♥
Thanks for this Scott! Your videos help me out lots and inspire me!
I had never compared jelly gouache to mcdonalds sauces but you're absolutely right 😂😂
This has got me trying to see fancy colors in my Brown colored horses 😂 loved this video and I learned so much! Thank you Scott❤
That was more helpful and on point than some of the online courses I know. Thank you very much 🙏🏼
Can you tell us how to pick the "undertone" colors? Without it, my colors look boring and they just dont pop.
You convinced me that I *need* more paint that I really do not need …. Another rabbit hole?…. Probably! …I’ll have a few sets by the end of the year, I’m sure
Really loving these explanation videos. Open the dam. We need more of em😂😂
That was amazing! I could write a book on the many reasons why and how much i learned from this. But i gotta go and noodle with my gouache! Thanks Scott!
Amazing once again, thank you for the knowledge and advice 🙏
For himi gouache users, it would probably good to know that if not cared for correctly it can mold ☠ but other than that i think gouache is an amazing medium and becuase of this video i was inspiried to finally buy another set to use and start painting again
Thank you for all of your encouragement to young artists like me, your videos always help my imposter syndrome when I'm working on a piece.
The way you block in shapes is so cool
