I wouldn't be shocked if it's actually a similar scale to Warhammer and firefights 28mm. They're just calling it 35mm because Spartans should be bigger than your average human.
I think they will go for 40mm, partly because they'll have the biggest space marines, but also because it allows them to add a lot of detail and texture to the models. I expect the target audience to be Halo OGs who are ageing out of competitive gaming, maybe have kids they want to spend time with, and who are probably not going to be good at painting, so the models need to look good after a drybrush and a wash, or when using Speedpaints or Contrast.
40mm spartans are going to look great, need to see all that detail on individual models, not just a bunch of little armoured guys on the table. These are going to be collectable figures as well as gaming pieces.
Spartan Games, most famous for Dystopian Wars, had the Halo licence before they went under in 2017. They produced Halo Fleet Battles (space combat) and Halo Ground Command (1:100 scale mass battle)
Coupled with them announcing last month that they've re-acquired the Walking Dead license is pretty huge for Mantic. Excited to see what comes of this.
I don't think Mantic will go much larger than legion scale - 35mm. Its a nice scale for painting. These days I just print new terrain for new games and I often scale the terrain up to about 35mm.
From what mantic have said on their facebook its going to be about 35mm scale same as legion or warhammer but spartans will be about 40mm as they are much taller than a normal human who would be around 35mm
Thanks for confirming that. I’m a little disappointed. I was hoping for a similar scale but I’m sure the painters in the hobby appreciates the large scale 😁
Can you imagine how big a scorpion tank or a pelican gunship will be when they go for 35-40mm ? That scale is just too big. Halo ground command was 15mm so that tanks and gunships wouldn't be too big for the table. They even released a downsized pelican and phantom because the original ones were just too massive.
im a big fan of good ol 28mm scale. spartans being roughly primaris marine sized would feel right, obviously a little taller and leaner, but about their size.
Tallest spartan was a 2 being 8ft while the average for 3’s and 4’s is 7ft5 for the tallest. Primaris are 8 to 9ft (not talking about firstborne that range to dreadnaught size).
@Icewolfaspect Yeah but Warhammer is heroic scaled. Emphasized hands guns and heads. Means the proportions are more cartoony. Marines are wider than spartans so spartans accentuating their height wpuld make sense since theyre not meant to be super wide
There was Halo ground command that was shortly lived. My girlfriends coworker is currently printing some forerunner structures for 40k terrain based around 28mm
I've noticed that 35mm+ has become a more common scale for licensed games and it's not just used in Star Wars Shatterpoint, Pretty sure that's also the scale for Knight Models Batman, DC Multiverse, and Harry Potter miniature games and then there is Atomic Masses Marvel Crisis Protocol which is apparently 40mm. In the case of Shtterpoint, it was probably to make sure that Legion and Imperial Assault minis would be the wrong scale so people couldn't use those instead. And given that all of these, including Halo apparently, are small skirmish games it's fine. I doubt that the Halo game will require a huge amount of space so having a small amount of oversized terrain for it isn't going to be that big a deal. Plus, you could always use it for one of the above mentioned games as well. Personally, I'd rather see Halo in a smaller scale so you could have large battles with vehicles that don't take up a huge amount of space from the tabletop (looking at you M808B Scorpion tank). I think around 15mm (for humans, Spartans would be taller) would still allow for detailed mini's but not require an unreasonable amount of space to play a game with. It's one of the reasons I'm excited about Mantic bringing back Warpath and doing it in a small scale so you can have the big battles the rules were designed for.
So happy to find your channel. Need more black nerds in the scene. I talk about wargaming on my main channel but it's brand new so my reach is small. And I've been messing with OPR since lockdown. Great toeet a fellow man of culture.
If it is a 40mm scale you will need a garage just for the pelican gunship or the phantom😉! I saw the original sized pelican from Halo Ground command and that was a huge booger. Now a pelican more than double the size really isn't necessary. I already consider sticking to my "ground command" - miniatures and use them with the rules of this upcoming game. That being said i think 28mm would still be too big for the Halo universe!
Whilst I'm not specifically interested in Halo, it's certainly a good step to see. Between Mantic, Warlord and others getting popular IPs onto the tabletop, it gives more options for painting and more people interesting in wargaming/tabletop games. I look forward to it, maybe something I like is next :).
A few lingering questions, will they be pre-painted? How will they capture the mechanics of the games, IE grenades, 2 weapons, melee, & shield regen? Either way I'm excited to see
Honestly, if they were pre-painted I’d be more inclined to buy in. Only because I’m finding myself increasingly busy these days and I could get it right to the table 😁
Spartans are 40mm tall so a human might be 32mm I have not seen them say the scale yet I’m guessing if a spartan is 40mm tall so probably 1/50 scale or close
I will use them also for GCPS elite soldiers in Deadzone and Firefight. The style is so similar and are made by the same company, so very compatible, I only will need to adjust some stats for them.
fingers crossed they get better sculpts than the majority of their stuff and knock it out of the park on the rules. the 15mm game from a while back was cool, but lacking an audience.
I’ll play devil’s advocate for your initial stance on scale Table Salt. What were some of the biggest aspects of appeal for you with the original HALO titles? Was one of them customizing your Spartan? If this truly is a multiplayer tabletop to where eight friends can get around the kitchen table with drinks, chips, and dice; wouldn’t your sense of nostalgia want you to be able to customize your mini to where your friends knew it was yours? I would love 28-32mm ODSTs more than anything but if this is a Team Slayer tabletop experience, I want my Spartan on the field. I feel like even Shatterpoint scale may not be able to allow this (but I would love new terrain kits for Shatterpoint). I think the red vs blue part of this is simple drop ins for your bases though to identify your team at a glance. Being able to change weapons during a match makes me think of magnetization solutions at purchase or in design or something that requires the larger than 32mm scale to make possible
Looking forward to this, hoping it's the right scale for my existing sci-fi terrain I have some halo-like terrain at 28-33mm scale that might look good.
I am looking forward to this. I wonder what scale this will be. An epic sized halo tabletop would definetly be fun. Also i hope i can get some quality ODST.
Meh. Unless it's co-operative, it'll just another 2 player miniatures game with an ubiquitous IP. The minis will sell well for a couple of months and then it'll die.
@tablesaltgames, halo miniture game isn't new. Wizkids had it first off. The nitch for it on tabletop wargaming/tabletop mini gaming is not that large. there have been several companies over the years with the IP. WizKids brought the most into the hobby because of cross-over and not having to build and paint, compared to Mantic has a serious build and paint side.
Got so excited.... then heard the "halo multiplayer experience" and lost interest. I was hoping to see matines and ODST fighting grunts and elites and hunters and shit. Has the people running halo forgot that theres like, a while as war or three in the lore, nit just metal super hero proxies duking it out in simulated arenas?

No idea why people keep forgetting this, everyone (including Mantic) is treating this like it's the first time Halo has hit the tabletop
343: first time halo has ever done this
Me: we had ground commnd and fleet battles
Coupled with them announcing last month that they've re-acquired the Walking Dead license is pretty huge for Mantic. Excited to see what comes of this.
Good! I love playing walking dead all out war

Glad you found the channel! I’m just getting into OPR, wish I would’ve found it sooner. Best of luck with your channel
Im not excited if it is 40mm. I hope it ends up being 28mm

I'm expecting to see them cast in red and blue plastic. I'd be surprised if they did pre-paints.
No Kickstarter straight to retail, now that's fantastic news.
Ditto
I hope the sangheili get their own faction. I want the arbiter in his gold armor!
Spartans are 40mm tall so a human might be 32mm I have not seen them say the scale yet I’m guessing if a spartan is 40mm tall so probably 1/50 scale or close
Our birthdays are gonna be dope!
Yo, thanks for the heads up.
I will be getting some of those miniatures. Oh Yeah.
I will use them also for GCPS elite soldiers in Deadzone and Firefight. The style is so similar and are made by the same company, so very compatible, I only will need to adjust some stats for them.

A'Hoy M'Lord. Lets hope Mantic dont blow this. Looking forward to seeing what they do.
I just hope we get to see more UNSC and not just the Spartans
I hope its not just spartan vs spartan. Need covenant and Banished as well.
I’ll play devil’s advocate for your initial stance on scale Table Salt.

A flood army is gonna be tight
let me carry my huge computer to host the halo lan party lol😂🎉
It sounds like warhammer 40k kill team
It,s so so good 💙🌼
If they don't do a 5v5 skirmish mode it will be a miss shot
Meh.

meh, if this was 10 years ago when Halo was huge licence then this would of been big news. But Halo is not the IP it used to be.
True, but It’s the nostalgia for me. Man I’m getting old 👴🏿😂
i rather 12 mm
So much talking and so little view of the actual game? wasted my time
Got so excited.... then heard the "halo multiplayer experience" and lost interest. I was hoping to see matines and ODST fighting grunts and elites and hunters and shit.
