I have been watching this D&D campaign since the beginning and was never quite captured by it. It was always more of a filler campaign in between Critical Role episodes... That said, this is the first episode of the C team that really drew me in. I know that Jerry has done some "down time" stuff previously in the campaign but with this episode he really blew me away with the leveling the home base Idea and this weird Ale mass hallucination that transports his players to a "dream realm" that is not only shared but can also be altered... and the fact that they just happened to stumble on it, like they could well have just had a sip rolled high on a con save and been like yup... shit beer and moved on (or just thrown it outside and been done with it as I would have done). Either way it gave me a look into the genius that is Jerry Holkins. to hide that much content and a whole new mystery behind what would normally be a "failed" roll is an amazing DM decision and I applaud it... I am now permanently invested in this campaign and Jerry Holkins DMing two thumbs way up on this one...
That is hilarious. The C team campaigns have become my REPLACEMENT for a Critical Role show that has wandered away from the actual game of D&D and has been transmogrified into a game of D-list Hollywood Calvin ball.....
Second this, used to be an avid critter, but wasn't until reading this that I realized I had been binge watching C-team and haven't watched, nor missed, CR. Fond memories, but for me CR might very well be over.

One time I was playing D&D and the DM transported us to Ravenloft... during the dungeon some banshees showed up and we had to roll a Will save or die... all of us failed. He looked at the ability for a minute then was like "oh they can only do that at night, it's daytime right now"

I don't fully understand why everyone's so reticent to tell Propha about the ghost children. She seems like a pretty understanding person and I don't think they'd be dealing her a huge emotional blow just by telling her about their existence in the carriage house.
I don't think they're ghosts, more likely spectral memories or temporal echoes.

first thing on the page when you google are plants mushrooms it says Mushrooms are fungi, and are usually placed in a Kingdom of their own apart from plants and animals. Mushrooms contain no chlorophyll and most are considered saprophytes. That is, they obtain their nutrition from metabolizing non living organic matter. so NO mushrooms are NOT plants

Funny episode
Some thoughts on the "food service" minigame:
-It felt like there wasn't much reason to use abilities/spells since Jerry let people use almost any skill roll for any check regardless of spells/abilities. Maybe offer an extra bonus of +3 for Walnut's 3rd level spell or give a small bonus for K'thris's assistants.
-Rustic hospitality *really* felt like it should've come into play here. Maybe it is more of an old-school mindset, but some encounters clearly favor certain characters, and here felt like it should've been Rosie's time to shine. I'd have been okay with giving her advantage on every cooking roll for free.
-The "difficult" rolls felt kinda pointless. They give advantage, but people are spending advantage to get them, and I think an 18 is still statistically harder to get on 2 rolls with a +5 mod than a 13 is with 1 roll. Maybe keeping a tally of total "wins" at the end would be cool, giving +1 for a normal success and +2 for difficult successes.
could you please fix the audio. the setting that shutoff the Mic when someone stops talking is very annoying. it causes the background noises to intensify when the Mic goes back on. this happens a lot when Jerry pauses mid sentence.

Can't any skill check choose to be failed by the player without a roll??
I would argue that you can choose to fail saves that you would have control over the outcome of, for example failing to dodge/maintain/ward off a spell or jump/climb/grapple something but for something with an uncontrolled impact such as drinking/drug use/poisons you can't force yourself to get drunk/high/poisoned quicker nor how it will impact you so the dice is a good indiscriminate way to tell what will happen given that circumstance plus in a situation (such as this) where a failure is "good" it adds flavor to force a roll and to the mystery and intrigue of the event for the player.
Arguments aside, I'm just talking is it allowed in the rules? To complete the narrative in a more timely fashion, I would think that progressing the story might be a little more urgent (especially in this time-dependent, episodic format...) This would prevent a big nothing-burger episode (like this one...) from happening...
well... as for "the rules" I believe even in the players handbook it states that they are just guidelines to help the DM shape the world, meaning its up to the DM's discretion to use or discard what they see fit. In my opinion D&D is different depending on what the campaign is designed around (and what the players value) this episode could be looked at as very productive. *spoilers* they found out a lot more about the locket and found an alternate quest with the ale, they upgraded their base of operations as well as standings with acq. inc. and Prophetess Dran they may not have made progress in the traditional sense like fighting a big bad or dungeon crawled and found treasures but perhaps (as the previous episodes would suggest) thats not what this campaign is about...
So, you're saying that a rule does not exist that says a player may choose to fail a skill check... I thought there was an explicit rule for such an eventuality, not just the DM's "discretion..." I think such a rule would be essential, especially in a time-restricted format like this to prevent it from devolving into a Calvinball-esque cluster...
hmm... well, I don't know what you mean since the DM steers the entire narrative and therefore decides when a roll is ever "essential" so nothing will ever go anywhere the DM doesn't want. and to be clear, I never said a "rule" doesn't exist... just that the DM has the discretion to pick and choose what they would like to apply to their specific game, house rules and home-brewing is a huge part of D&D because of that...
