Dr Jones discusses the rising costs of veterinary care: a recent article shows veterinary fees have tripled in recent years. Many people are finding vet costs unaffordable, and are giving up their dogs and cats to animal shelters. Dr Jones shares his story of why he is no longer practicing. Dr Jones shows what Veterinary Secrets is doing about this, including supporting charities who help pet parents struggling to pay for their dog or cat's care.

I am horrified at the cost of veterinary care... my late husband and I had a vet clinic so I know what is involved in procedures. I cannot believe the charges they have for simple cheap procedures. We always kept our fees low and in balance with the community's average wage. It meant we worked harder for the same income that higher charging vets did. Our principle was that a pensioner could come in and have their dog checked for an itch at a small fee rather than the dog left unseen.. sometimes the people just wanted to drop in for a cuppa and chat and the animal was an excuse, we loved that. Often during a routine yearly vaccination check, my hubby would simply chip off any tartar on the teeth with his thumb nail if it wasn't bad, no charge. They way he neutered male cats was with great care, incisions, mosquito clamps, ligatures.. very gentle, the cat didn't even know it was being done... unlike the quick techniques a lot of others use like the evultion method. Makes me cringe the violence of that, cut rip out done and a huge bill.. totally unjustified. We loved our community, and the way we practiced made us part of that. My hubby always said to be a vet you have to love people because it is people who look after the animal... he was a legend.. Unfortunately he got T-Cell lymphoma in the first year of setting up practice and we had 5 years of continuing practice between treatments until he died. He said he wanted to practice til his last breath and that is exactly what he did. I so wish there was a way to regulate veterinary fees.. maybe report to price gouging sites? When the costs are tallied for a procedure there needs to be a limit on the percentage of profit. Its pet insurance that has driven up fees, and fees have also encouraged pet insurance. I wonder if there is a conspiracy there?

Pet insurance is selective like human insurance about pre-existing conditions.
I've been looking into it and wondered if it's any good. The cap payout per services isn't very high.
      E.g. Dental reimbursement of $125 on a $1200 bill. That's not a smart investment.

God bless your husband and you!! Your husband sounds just like my old vet Bill Berrisford who is now retired. One day I found a dog in labour tied to our front porch; she had a puppy stuck... and was exhausted. I had no idea where she came from and took her to Bill. He immediately performed a C section on the small mother who had three more (good sized) pups - the first was dead - that survived the surgery with their mother. I couldn't keep the stray mother and her pups because we already had two large dogs (male and female)... So, after recuperation in our garage and a final check up, I surrendered the little family to the shelter. But Bill didn't charge me a cent for all the treatment, mediction and after care - that's the heart of a true veterinarian! I still attend that practice... but it has become a lot more comercial and a tad less 'caring' since Bill left. However, there are still a couple of good vets who focus on their patients well being rather than the owners wallets. I agree that there should be some way to schedule and regulate the cost of consultation, treatment and medications. A directory of parctices and the fees... might go some way to modifying greed.

My vet said my cat needed some Rx meds. So I paid for them when we checked out. The vet charged me $30 for 30 pills. When I got home, I googled the meds and saw that I could have bought the same Rx medication online for $5. Now, do you think I will ever trust that vet again ? It's all the vets and what THEY are charged by big pharma. My vet charged me 60 bucks for 60 pills. The next month they were going to charge me 120. Double the previous cost. I found an online pharmacy that charges me pennies a pill. You just have to have a vet willing to send them a script, or get the script from the vet and send it to them. California Pet Pharmacy. I've been using it ever since.

My beloved kitty got diabetes, I knew it, I took him to the vet and five hundred dollars later I had the diagnosis. They told me it would take about 1200 dollars to begin his treatment and two hundred -plus a month from then on, plu. I would have to bring him in every week or so to check his shots were correct. I had to carry him on a street without transit. I am a senior on a cane and on a pension. I had to put him down because I could not afford to treat him. I paid 500 to find out what I already knew and another 500 to put him down. This all happened in two hours. I was in shock and am still carrying the bill on my card. I don't mean to sound pitiful but damn I sure felt it. I understand vets must be paid, we all do but it sure hurt and still does a year later.

So sorry you made that decision for your sweet beloved kitty. Diabetes is almost always caused by kibble -- it's not just junk ingredients, but also loaded with carbohydrates which is part of the production process. Kibble has done untold harm to kitties. Your kitty's diabetes would likely have gone into remission if you switched to only wet food with a little extra water added -- the kind of wet food that's free of grains and carbs (such as peas, carrots, other veggies, fruits, tapioca, gums -- xantham, guar, carageenan, etc). Kibbles kills and debilitates kitties -- diabetes, cancers, kidney disease, UTIs, urinary blockage, allegies, etc.

I think your talking about animal shelters or non profits however not every animal shelter offered them and non profits who do this are hard to come by especially if you have a disability that effects mobility meaning standard appointments are not geared toward that either. For example if you need someone to take you there then you have to abide by their schedule and if there’s no appointments around the time someone can take you you’re screwed. That’s why mobile clinics are awesome and I wish there were more. You can go to your states veterinary school for complicated surgeries and they will work out a payment plan the downside to this is the fact the waitlists are incredibly long my friend called to just ask if he could get his dogs hips scored through them and it was a 6 month long wait .

I've witnessed the sociopathic element myself. I was once an assistant at a mass spay event held for a disadvantaged community. About a hundred dogs were spayed and neutered for free in a hall where many vets used the hall as a single large operating room. I could see everything. While being operated on, one dog woke up, and started screaming in pain due to its open wounds. The vet LAUGHED. Another dog reacted badly to her spay and was allowed to die alone on a table by another vet. That day traumatized me so much, I left animal welfare.

My dog just had his annual distemper and kennel cough shots along with blood work. Over $300 and we are seniors citizens. Was quoted $1000 or more for dental cleaning and possible teeth extraction. About 7 years ago I had the previous dog anesthetized for dental work. A few days later his hind legs collapsed, wouldn’t eat or drink water. He was 10 years old so I had him euthanized as he seemed to be suffering.
I mentioned this to the vet and got a “ there are always risks to anesthesia”. My dog is 6 years old. I’m sorry I didn’t get pet insurance but had no idea that vet charges would jump so high! No wonder shelters are full as many of us can’t afford these fees, and most vets want it upfront, no monthly payments. Long time ago in the early 70s we took a few rescued pups to the vet as they were sick. One needed a blood transfusion. No charge as we had rescued them. Can’t see this happening today.

Thank you for suggesting Monistat for dog's yeast infection ears. I paid over 500 bucks just for one ear infection which they packed with something several times over six weeks of treatment which did not cure it and made for a miserable 6 weeks for my dog. I was livid. Then I saw your video and that fixed it the first time I used it. Now, if I notice him shaking his head more than usual I just put a little on two fingers and into his ears I go and he loves it. He used to run from me with the other meds which did nothing but possibly make it worse.
Also, $ 2500 is our usual bill for our dog's dental visits. I am just overwhelmed at what we have to pay the vet. Here in Mississippi 75percent of animals never see a vet in their lives. People simply cannot afford these sky high bills. We do shelter work and so many animals get abandoned when they have health issues. That is so cruel. The owner of the veterinary clinic that I know well, recently shared with me that he faced difficulty in finding competent veterinarians who were passionate about their work. He mentioned that many of the recent graduates from the university enquired about bonuses and vacations before accepting the job (money, money, money). This indicates a decline in the level of passion for animal care among the new generation of veterinarians.

My dog has IMHA and I am going into debt caring for her with monthly blood tests and her meds. That is why I watch your channel for ways to help my dog's condition and why I prepare her human grade food. I took my kitten for a neuter at another vet and they wanted to do a dental on him...he is a kitten! I told them I was there for a neuter surgery and that's all. I had a similar experience with an internal medicine department at a vet referral practice where my dog was a patient for a year.
My dog's internal medicine doctor abruptly left the practice in the middle of my dog's treatment plan and didn't assign another vet to take over my dog's care.
In order for my dog to get continuing care, I was told I had to pay a new patient deposit ($180) to get an appointment with another vet in the internal medicine department to take over my dog's care within the same practice.
This was after I already paid the $180 new patient fee a year prior for the initial visit.
All my dog's records, diagnostic images, labs were in this same referral practice.
My dog's first visit there was near $1,000.
The referral practice was making me start all over from scratch with another vet basically.
Does this sound like a normal practice?

Your Vet sounds like a money hungry Bastard/Bitch! There is No Way they should have charged you, or anyone else for that matter an EXTRA charge for being a "new patient!" And an Exorbitant fee at that! And then to be that DISPICABLE to LIE to you to tell you that a kitten needed a dental! And it just proves they were Lying, because if they didn't follow up with telling you exactly what was wrong with the kittens teeth, after you told them no, then they were clearly full of crap!
And btw, to help keep your (now) cats teeth & gums healthy, I'd highly suggest you get Dr. Kings Homeopathic "Oral Health" , they also have one for dogs as well.
It works Great! I had one of my cats , (the Vet said) when she looked in his mouth that his gums were inflamed & needed a dental. I immediately started him on the homeopathic, and within a couple months, his gums were healthy & healed & he didn't need a dental.
The directions say to put it in their water, which is good to do if you have multiple cats & dogs (remedies are different for canine/feline.) However, since you just have one of each, I'd suggest putting it in a syringe & administering it orally, as you will save more money that way, and otherwise the dog & cat might drink out of the same water bowel & not be getting the correct remedy. For my average size cat, I give him .02cc's 2x's per day, AM/PM. Not sure what size your doggie is, but if larger than a cat, I'd increase the dosage to approximately .05cc's for med size, or 1.0ML if larger, AM/PM. If you keep up on it faithfully, you could very well avoid Expensive dental bills.
Also to note, Dr. Kings also has several other remedies for other maladies you might want to check out. I also use herbal products from Natural Wonder Pets as well. And another Incredible product I use for my pets is C-60, (Brand I use is "Purple Power". I'd highly recommend doing your research on it. It has done Amazing things for my fur-babies! There is a people version, "C-60 Complete" that I highly recommend as well.
I hope any of this information may be of help to you! Take care.

Oh, Dear Veterinarian, you're not alone...! There are a numerous vets here, in Australia, who are 'rebelling' as you have. I know one veterinarian who gave up her licence because she was asked to "explain charges of misconduct" for suggesting alternative remedies, or over the counter medications, for large animals - cows, sheep, and horses. Even though unlicenced, that veterinarian, has a large client base who refused to abandon her after all the excellent results she achieved with their livestock over her years of work. There are other vets who have gone 'underground' and sell medication for pets (and/or livestock) 'under the counter' at low cost - unbeknown to practice owners and managers. Where there's a will, genuine vets seem to find a way... All the best to you. Please keep up the good work!

Thank you so much Doc for creating this channel. Speaking of high vet fees, I just had the worst 3 months of my life with one of my male Bengals who suffered a urinary blockage. His blockage led to a kidney infection, which led to a UTI. After 3 weeks everything was fine. Then another UTI this time a different bacteria, he developed antibiotic resistance and took forever to cure the 2nd UTI. When all was said and done I spend about 5k Canadian. The most expensive part of all this was not the surgery or the medication or treatments it was the housing fees. They charged me $500/ day ($250 per 12 hour block) to keep him hospitalized. They also gas lit me to feed him Royal Canin urinary S/O and told me it was that food he needed to be on for the rest of his life. He wouldn't eat it, I found a brand from Europe and they told me he would "relapse and potentially die" if I fed him that. When I asked why the 1st 3 ingredients were soy, corn and wheat and why an obligate carnivore needed to eat this, they told me well "it's been studied and that's the science". Well, now he's on high quality canned and raw food and there's no more crystals, bacteria and his urine is clear. When I speak about raw they always bring up salmonella so I lie and say he's in urinary food. It's horrible, I'm just glad I found your channel as it helped me alot through these past 3 months. I had a conventional vet tell me one time that of my dogs had a slipped cervical disk and would most likely need surgery.

In April this year, adopted a chihuahua mix female about 10 pounds, estimated 8 years old. They gave her a bunch of shots and rabies vaccines before I got her from the shelter. Two days after I got her home, she had two small paddling seizures. The next day she had an appointment with the vet. The vet was upset they gave her those shots on the same day, and that’s why she might be having seizures. They told me her heart rate was very slow and bloodwork showed she was extremely anemic. The head vet wanted me to have her teeth cleaned and I said NO, because of her heart rate, she might not survive being under anesthesia. I got all her hair grown back in that was missing, and bought some CBD oil for her seizures, which helped until recently. Had her teeth cleaned by a mobile teeth cleaning company that doesn’t use anesthesia. I’ve had her 8 months now and she had 6 seizures in a couple of hours, so I took her back to the vet for bloodwork again and it was another vet in that same office and she ordered a test that showed heart disease. I never fed her any dog food and always make their food. They tell me I need to see a cardiologist and I can’t afford it. Last year my other chihuahua had neck surgery that cost me 5 grand. I have my shelter dog on a seizure medication, now, but I only give it to her once a day and she hasn’t had one seizure. They wanted me to give it to her twice a day. I will IF she has a seizure. I think most medications are over prescribed. I can’t afford any more expensive vet bills. She’s doing fine for now, but it disturbs me how expensive it has become to own any pet. I have always had dogs growing up and I don’t ever remember bringing them to the vet at all. They remained with our family until they passed away. I am retired now and love the comfort and companionship of my fur babies. 😢

When I was a kid many years ago, we had dogs and they ate table scraps and homemade dog food never went to the vet. They were really old when they passed and we held them in our arms and loved on them as they went. I think they were happier then than now. I have a dog now and since I stopped taking him to the vet for immunizations and heart worm immunizations and flea and tick pills, he’s been doing so much better. No barfing and eating grass or licking his paws. I put Diatomaceous earth on his food and a little ACV in his water, plus I watch your channel if I need anything else!

As you said, no fancy dog or cat food, no vaccinations but they was always fit and healthy. I have 6 dogs, 7 cats, and an African sulcata tortoise (I've always rescued). My dogs eat a raw, and gently cooked, diet of meat, bones, organs (and appropriate supplements). Feeding my dogs this way is not only ideal for them, but also is a great insurance policy toward their health. Vets like you are also a GIANT help with care.
This vet gouging hurts animals, and people are surrendering their pets at an alarming rate, ugh. Shatters my heart.

My dog was having issues with his ear and it was spreading beyond the ear and he was starting to lose hair. I went to the vet for help, and they seemed clueless and gave me ear drops that never helped the issue.
One of your videos randomly popped up in my TH-cam feed, it was about seven over-the-counter remedies for your dog, and it explained that my dog just had a yeast infection in his ear and to use yeast infection cream. I used it and it relieved my dog of the pain and itching, and then I used the book Prescription for Natural Cures to find out what I could do to reverse a yeast infection. I was able to heal my dog with diet alone and if he happens to eat something that has chicken in it or sugar, that he eats without me knowing, such as the neighbor's cat food, then I now have a quick remedy with the yeast cream! Thank you. It saved me tonnes of money.

Dr. Jones, I don't know what so many pet owners would do without you. Thank you so, so much. Now, even flea meds are priced sky high, so after I'm done with my baby's last dosage, I'm trying one of your remedies.
My Lola, all of a sudden on Christmas day, could barely walk, could not get off the sofa, and looked at me like, "mom, please help." I got her in to my vet the next day. The owner examined her, and I decided it would be prudent to have blood work done. She's on gabapentin and trazadone, which helped her tremendously, but, I walked out with a bill just under $300.00. I know if she was examined in Seattle, I'm sure it would have been at least $800. I'm living on SS and I'm getting wiped out of my meager savings. But what can you do for a companion who is your life?

I learned more about taking care of myself from a former military doctor who served in Vietnam than anyone and of course ive learned a lot from you Dr Jones. But I've also watched our air, water, land, food and bodies become slowly poisoned from all the garbage thats being released into these area's. Then comes our pets/family members. I really balk at all the vaccinations now, i only keep up w couple with our newest best friend and puppy. Just like my wife and i aren't on any drugs, eat as best we can, stay away from all vaccines and are doing great, we learned to apply that to our new puppy, apply a lot of natural common remedies, you give us a lot of great advice. Your treatment for cancer i didn't find til our old dog was diagnosed and they wanted $$$$$ to do things to him i wouldn't let anyone do to me. Your advice really helped and he had a great last year full if dog bucket list adventures. I think if we'd caught it earlier with your advice he'd have lasted longer. He never was in pain and didn't seem hindered by it.
Price's and theur medical treatments are outrageously priced and they box you in. My wife and i have had 2 dogs in 35 years and we just got our third. Literally our first one lasted 15 1/2 years and we weren't as aware of everything yet. Thank you for all your advice and help.

Ha, you sound just like me. I gently cook my 6 dogs' food daily, so it's fresh (their preference). My 7 cats also have a special diet. Our African sulcata tortoise eats only organic greens, etc, goes outside in the am, and comes inside every night. He comes to the door to be let in (giant dog door is now too small), eats a snack, then goes into his home (he has a big dog bed and a warmer to sleep on) in our family room. Every animal is a rescue, and always has been. Our Craigslist $35 rescue (Carl, Rottweiler/Pitbull) ended up being our $5k dog, lol (Carl).

Let it cool until you can put your pot of strained broth in the refrigerator overnight it will become like Jell-O I store it in Ziploc containers with lid each container holds approximately 3 cups of the gelatin. I freeze them until needed. Take them out the night before you need them. I microwave a cup of gelatin to return it to liquid form. And pour over the homemade dog food. My dogs love it. The rescue group must be forthcoming with all the animal's health issues of each pet and not let the foster (or adopter) find out after the fact.
Rescue groups that withhold known medical / health information of their animals are not to be trusted.
I found out the hard way after I offered to foster. Once the foster dog was in my home, his true health status became known to me and the rescue group knew about his health problems but would not share them with me, then they walked away from him.

Dr. Jones, as a subscriber, I thank God for you. I found a practice whose goal is to stop what they call, "Economical Euthanasia". My cocker spaniel's vet said there was no more she could do for Celeste's ears. She needed a TECA-BO operation. It was difficult to find a surgeon in my area and when we did, they quoted a price range from $4500-$5300. I couldn't afford that. It took lots of research, but I found Good Samaritan Pet Doctor of Omaha. Their charge was $930. This included the surgery and all meds everything except the E-Collar which about 12 bucks. Driving from Tulsa to Omaha and getting a hotel room for two nights was still far less than any other clinic I found. Celeste, who is 9 years, had her surgery on 12/12 after battling a slight incision infection, has recovered. Last night she jumped up on my sofa on her own for the first time in years! Usually, I have to pick her up because wherever I am, she wants to be right there with me. She ran and played for the first time with my best friend's dog for the first time in two years. I hope this is useful information for others. Good Sam only does high cost surgeries rather than operating a full service pet clinic. Anyway, folks like you and Good Sam who are a blessing!

So true. Last year, I had my female dog scheduled to be spayed. They wouldn't spay her because she was not up to date with her vaccines and the vet tech she needed to give them to her prior to them taking her in for surgery. The reason they gave was "in the event she bites one of them." My husband went to his truck and pulled out a basket muzzle, gave it to the vet tech and said; "this should solve your problem." When I went to go pick her up, they tried to sell me on so many different vaccines and one of them was a rattlesnake vaccine. I just laughed, paid the bill and left. It's more than apparent Veterinarians have been hijacked by big pharma.

Everyone needs to study alternative care and herbal remedies. They need to find a veterinarian that has decades of experience, has their student loans paid off-and has paid for their own building! Look for veterinary offices that are modest rather than super modern and fancy. TRAIN your dog to have excellent recall and self control. Learn about human and pet nutrition. Learn from people who raise livestock.
*** Someone commented that they will remember veterinarians as evil or demons. It is work to find a good veterinarian! You have to do the hard work. Most veterinarians -especially fresh out of vet school-are gonna be learning on our dime and our pets. Do not patronize these people.

As a retired animal control officer of 27 years who worked with vets; Granted, vet school is very expensive, overhead is high. When somebody decides to become a vet, he/she should know that their work schedule will be anything but regular. Pets seem to get sick late at night more often then any other time. Old time vets got together to divide the schedule of the wee hours and weekends equally among themselves. Nowadays, they work eight hours when it is convenient for them, and leave the undesirable hours to what is now called emergency vets who put a ridiculous premium on their time. I had to have my dog put down at 1;00 AM and they charged me $360 dollars for 10 minutes and one shot. So the vets who works the undesirable hours make a killing (no pun intended). This leaves the straight daylight, weekend off vets with little income because most of the animals are being treated by the emergency vets. So what do they do? they have to dramatically raise their rates. I have subscribed to your channel and use as much of your suggestions as possible. I have not taken my dog to any vets for eight years as a result. To the lazy daytime vets I ask; How much money are you making from me? I would gladly use an around the clock vet service if they existed. Unfortunately, they don't so I don't feel the slightest bit sorry for the lazy vets. Thank you for your service.

The doc called that morning to tell me they found no obstruction, so 4000.00 is what it cost me to find out he had a gi upset. Bought your book and will be reading it thoroughly!

It cost me over a thousand dollars to get my dogs vaccinated, nails clipped, wellness check, wormer. I have 4 rescues. Another thing that gets me is the price of dog food. It has skyrocketed. I use Nexgard and I usually buy a years worth at the time. It comes in 3, 6, and 12 months doses. I was appalled that instead of charging me for the box my vet was charging me per pill. And he charged about $30. for each pill. Instead of paying $54 for a box of 3 tablets, he was getting $90. Ridiculous. I'm retired and only have social security so that's just wrong. I contacted the manufacturer and was told vets could charge what they wanted.

Depends on where you live, here in a small Midwest town the vet is cheap, Ive has gastric dilitation volvulus several times in my St Bernards over the years, and the vet only charged me for the after hours call which was like $50- it was like 4am and the vet had to roll out of bed... and they only chanrged me their general surgery hourly rate- $125 per hour, we would open the abdomen and stomach, empty the stomach out and close, total bill each time was under $200 yet I hear people paying $4000 or $5000

Vet med expenses have become highway robbery for pet parents. It starts at the University level with tuition at for-profit institutions. Bankrupted students come out of college needing money so they work at price-gouging corporate vet facilities. They never know there used to be a better way.

We're fortunate to have a vet that is both excellent and cost conscientious. His costs have gone up, but actually slower than the inflation rate. He also does some charity care, and is part of our lost/injured pet care.
I've a 10-year-old GSD who has cancer in his lungs and stomach. On his recommendation, I've found a homeopathic protocol he's on. It's too soon to tell if it will help, but we can hope...

I appreciate your videos and this topic sure hits home. Of recent I had a dog put in my personal care (as in lives with me now) who had a pre-existing medical issue. Sadly the original owner’s daughter saw fit to cut the medical financial support off. As the dog now has complications and ideally would get surgery, I didn’t and don’t have $2300 to instantly pay at once. I asked if they had a payment plan. Years ago, the vet for my animal companions were fairly good at both cost and payment plans. Today, prices are up, pay all at once, and the bottom line is in fact, “the bottom line.” This is no longer animal health care but animal health business. My dog of present will not get the surgery as I can’t find any groups to help out or at least let me pay them over time. The dog remains now on Gabapentin until …. Well I admit I have ZERO trust in all the vets in the area and one admitted they are part of a corporation now.

My dog had a torn Achilles heel. All said and done, it was around $14,000. Of course, the first surgery had a pin that was too small and broke while she slept 3 days in, so she had get it redone. "At a discount". My dog before that had cancer, that was also almost $15,000. An MRI here in Ohio, just an MRI alone for a 65 lb dog, runs between $7,000 and $7,500. Just for a diagnostic. It's absolutely outrageous.

Great video and thanks for all you do. I was recently told by my vet clinic that they refuse to do a dental for my cat (all I really need is two extractions) without doing bloodwork first. The bloodwork is almost $200 and the dental estimate is between $1,400 and $1,900. Thanks for your products too. I give my dog several of your products to keep him as healthy as possible to avoid the vet. So frustrating and such a vicious cycle. More animals will be filling up the shelters and being euthanized because we can’t afford vet bills. Shame on the corporations, and your donations will go a long way to help. You’re on the right track and I fully support you.

I use to have the biggest file at the vet . The treatment cost kept rising. The vet started with a modest office and treatment center before long she had the tajmahal. After seeing the life span decrease on German Shepard and begals I began to question the chemicals and drugs given by vets. I ended up taking them totally off of the drops and supplementing acv. I give 2% ivermectin for heartworm. My latest crops of pups are more healthy. Hopefully the life span will get back to expectations of 30 years ago before vets began chemical treatment. The same has happened in Human care.

I have 20 rescued dogs, 6 rescued cats, and 17 chickens of which four of those are rescues. If I didnt work at a feed store I definitely xouldnt afford to feed or care dor them all. I have made a reputation for myself in that customers are always asking advice for the care of their animals. I always tell them if I cannot help them and they should go to a vet knowing that 9 times out of 10 they won't because they cant afford it and that the animal will probably perish. I try to give them alternatives when I know this is the case and sometimes it works if the owner is willing to put in the time. I am able to help more since I have found this channel. I have notebooks if information on care, and alternative medicine, as well as sheets I've printed out to give away. Thank you, Dr Jones for helping me to help the animals that wouldnt have made it if not for you.

The cost of getting veterinary care for our pets is outrageous. My vet now belongs to one of those big corporate groups ugh. The cost of a fecal test went up from like 50 dollars to over 100 !!! I was shocked. The cost of a dental cleaning going from a couple hundred to over one thousand dollars. If a pet gets sick some people will not be able to pay and probably have their beloved family member put down 😢 These corporations have no compassion just greed and they dictate prices. I saw this happening with the rise in corporate ownership (VCA, Blue Pearl, for example) where investor dividends, CEO salaries and shareholders are priority.
Dental estimate for my 14# rescue foster dog is $1100-$1600 with mandatory 4 Dx screens. No negotiating or spreading out costs allowed. Take it or leave it.
The rescue group bailed out on us. Unbeknownst to me, they said they would no longer cover his veterinary care, prescription (Gabapentin for grade 4 medial patella luxation even after I offered to share costs), food, training treats. The rescue group basically dumped the dog and his veterinary expenses in my lap even though he's their rescue dog.
This is the first time I ever experienced a rescue group that abandoned a once-abandoned stray dog and foster parent.
Economic euthanasia is on the rise too.
I hear this b.s. frequently : if you can't afford the pet's care, you shouldn't have a pet. Do people say that to human parents or to veterans with PTSD with service dogs?

My 7 month old kitten ate part of her feather toy. I took her to the emergency vet. They tried 2 doses of a med to get her to vomit. Didn’t work. They spun her in a chair. Didn’t work. Discharged her $400 later, saying to “watch her & come back if anymore problems”. I was thinking of adopting another kitten, but that opened my eyes to the cost. Now I won’t. Blue Pearl had taken over the clinic.

Dickering about money, down payment, upselling bells and whistles while my dog was in a respiratory distress (crisis) sitting in a cage looking at me as if to say, "Mom help me, I can't breathe".

Another way to ensure Canadians are kept poor, along with our federal administration taxing us to literally to death.

My dog had a history of one gland getting infected (hard to express) so I stayed on top of this issue. To be told to go to the ER for it seemed odd but I guess the day vet was too busy. I was willing to wait to be the last stinky appointment of the day.

I stopped taking any of my animals to the vet.
From 1989 through 2018 I have watched the cost increase with absolutely NO improvement to the care my animals receive or methods of treatment. I have probably spent hundreds of thousands over that 30 year period.
Then my beloved Rottie got diagnosed with cancer in his paw. My youngest was just finishing his senior year and I never received any help from my ex husband. To say my budget was tight is a huge understatement. The vet, I had been going to for 30 f’n years said I would have to wait until I could pay the $3300 surgery fee. It took me 3 months and several paydays loans . By that time, the cancer had gone to his bone and spread. A realistic price to remove a dog’s toe is about $300, not $3300. They killed my dog because of their greed. No, no vets here. We do just fine on our own.
I always appreciate you’re input and guidance, but in Missouri, vet care is a joke on the consumer and the animal pays the price.

Todays young vets think they are entitled to charge like they are brain surgeons. The escalating cost of veterinary care is heinous. They all want to live like movie stars and do it on my paycheck.
We have 9 animals, take excellent care of all of them, at 77 I learned how to groom all our dogs and it is my new hobby. No more trips to the groomer that were all over priced, I bought good equipment, tools make all the difference and my dogs are no longer exposed to poor care at the groomers and exposure to deadly diseases.
I have learned a lot from watching your channel. I put together your first aid kit for my animals and have it at the ready. Our yard is fenced and double gated. We walk the fence regularly to make sure no one can escape and the gates are locked. Everybody is housebroken, they all sleep in the house and are basically house dogs. Yes, we clean a lot. What else gives you so much satisfaction at 79 to see our pets healthy and happy. They love us unconditionally and they are our family. Keep us entertained too! Learning a lot from your channel. Love natural care for pet health.
