I love that this man rebelled even if it meant he was not going to be forking in the big bucks. I am listening to his advice more closely after I found out. I love our animal friends and am sort of a folk hero here in Puerto Rico. In Hurricane Hortense (extreme rain and flooding) I swam to the local dog pound after leaving my car on a bridge and saved the lives of over 300 animals trapped by the flood waters there. Most were already swimming in 3-4 feet of water in their cages when I rescued them. My 19 yrold son went with me, no one else was there except a vet and a vet technician. One of my favorite days beside the day I gave birth and the two days I saved two human lives. Long after "Indiana Joan" which is what my son used to call me has disappeared in time and I have become an old 65 year old lady I think back with a lot of satisfaction on the times I saw danger and injustice and it called me to action above and beyond my own safety and wellbeing. God bless you Doc for your selflessness. 😇🥰😇🥰
That is wonderful, but what was the veterinarian and the technician doing, when you arrived? Were they standing around, doing nothing and letting the animals drown in their cages? I cannot believe or imagine two people who are in professions regarding caring for animals, ignoring the plight of animals trapped and drowning in cages.
I've been making this for my dogs for years. I use chicken thighs or ground turkey, sweet potatoes or carrots and frozen spinach or peas. I also crack eggs into it! I literally make this a one pot meal, like a giant stew. No need for multiple pans. Then I use gallon size freezer bags to store it!!
Dr. I have a small dog, a chihuahua. Could I make this recipe and give her half cup a day, or do I have to change measurements of everything? I realize this is an older video, but I hope you see this comment. I just got her 6 months ago, and she just turned 3 years old. I want to feed her what is best for her health.
@@coleneritchie5625 you can use the same recipe. It will just last you longer. My dog is half the size of Tula, this will last a little over 2weeks. I usually freeze half right away and use that later
@@SimpleLife365 actually those items are all fine as long as your recipe is 50% meat the problem arises when petfood company's count peas and legumes towards the protein count since those items are to low in certain Amino Acids it creates a imbalance that over time will lead to big problems .
I use silicone muffin tins to portion out and freeze my pomeranian's homemade food (been making his food and snacks since he was a baby) The frozen "muffins" are super easy to pop out for storing in a freezer bag.
Brilliant idea w/ the silicone muffin time....I'd been putting it into snack baggies and freezing, noe I can just put them all in a 1 gallon baggie, drrr why didn't t i think of this 2 years ago....thank you so much.
You can use many different veggies when preparing your dogs meals. I switch out the meats and veggies often to give my dogs variety but broccoli, greenbeans, squash, spinach, zucchini, egg plant, asparagus, pumpkin, kale, cauliflower just to name a few . I even throw in some berries/fruit. I like the muffin pan idea especially for little dogs. I could have used that idea many years ago with my Bichon. I have 3 beagles now. I just cook enough food for a week then store in fridge.
I'm no vet, but I am a dude, and I'm a huge supporter of cooking and feeding your dog whole and fresh food. I only do it a few times a week at most as I don't even eat this good myself lol, but there is absolutely a correlation with health issues and just feeding dry kibble... Give your pup some real food! Imagine eating cereal your whole life...
My sister bred dogs & has 3 dogs of her own. She cooks up her own dog food like this & has done it for 3 decades. Her dogs live longer than average. This video is a Keeper for when I get a dog.
I make a similar dog food, but instead of rice I use the same amount of quinoa and my dogs love it. I have one that doesn’t like brown rice so I switched to quinoa and they all seem to love it more. The overall health of my dogs has improved so much over the past three years since they started eating my homemade food.
I do chicken thighs in the pressure cooker, sweet potatoes, mixed veggies and rice. My dogs have been eating this for almost 18 months and at ages 13 and 11 they are healthy and vibrant. We also noticed that the inflammation from arthritis has decreased a ton. These are both larger dogs, 85 and 90 lbs so to see how this diet has helped them in their older age makes me happy. I only wish I did this much sooner in their lives.
Raw diet is the most beneficial. Mostly muscle meats, secreting organs, eggs, and IF you feed raw veggies, it needs to be blended and/or fermented. While dogs bodies are similar to humans, their bodies don't process, store, utilize, etc like our bodies so they won't actually get the benefits like we do, from majority of all the additions. I LOVE this vet, and he means well. I'm not discounting his beliefs in the benefits or methods because I'm here often. BUT in the wild, a dog would eat what it hunted down... raw... Check out Paws of Prey for a better understanding.
Dr Jones I found you a few months ago and I am so grateful to you for doing what you do. Thank you so much for bringing a new perspective to dog health care. As a former vet tech surgical assistant I saw a lot of things that left me scratching my head and made me distrustful of a lot of the things that go on at vet hospitals. You are a breath of fresh air and I recommend that all of my puppy adopters watch your channel. In fact I did a video on vaccinations and suggested to everyone that they visit your channel! Keep up the amazing and much needed work that you do.
I have been making my dogs' food for almost 2 years. What a difference this has made in their health. I've made several mistakes though ; too much liver ( black poop ) too much live is dangerous-you don't need much and too much Tumeric ( yellow poop.) oops ! Ok, so I believe Dr Jones has got it covered and I'll be following his advice. So proud and honored to have come across his TH-cam channel and love his free book. Thank you Dr Jones You are the Very Best!
Thank you Dr Jones for all that you do for our animals. Please don't stop. Thousands of people(including myself) look to you for advice on how we can best take care of our pets affordably and without being pressured into needlessly expensive procedures and recommendations by those that care more about money than helping our animals.
The problem with over cooking the meat is that it kills the amino acids and vitamins. Swiss chard contains a lot of oxalates, so be careful as to how much and how frequently you give it as it can cause stones. Bok choy is a better choice. Brown rice also contains arsenic, so you have to wash it several times before cooking it in a lot of water. Real olive oil is also better than sunflower oil. You can find sufficient calcium in vegetables. Never give calcium carbonate. Give calcium citrate if necessary.
I gently cook mine in the oven at 325°F for 30-45 minutes. Also, I add the oils and broccoli after taking it out of the oven. Also, instead of brown rice, I add organic quinoa. It's higher in protein, lower in carbs, and it contains fiber, plus, there's no chance of arsenic over time.
You said everything I was thinking :) Just wanted to add brown rice is also high in the anti-nutrient phytic acid, so all those supposed "extra" vitamins it contains are not bioavailable. This diet is also a bit high in fatty acids; the eggs/flax should cover omega 3, the meat is high in omega 6. And be VERY careful with supplementing any fish oil with intact male dogs as it can actually increase their risk of prostate cancer.
Can u suggest a diet for a dog with calcium oxalate stones ,thetes just no way i can continue giving her that prescription diet food..its doing her no justice..Yhank uou..
So hard to find a vet that commits to a homemade nutritionally balanced meal.... been looking for something like this for 4 years with actual calcium and minerals supplements. Thank you!🤗🐶🐾
I made this food and let me tell u its so rewarding to see my dog LOVING her food. She loves ppl food so I stopped letting her have that and she got depressed.. this is super exciting to see her enjoy her meal. Thank u so much for sharing this video. It truly warms my heart .
There's nothing like a dog who LOVES his mama's cooking. I set an alarm for both meals... my dog jumps up and starts dancing because he knows it's meal time! 🤣
I have 9 rescue cats. My friend sent me one of your videos last week. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. I was stressed on going back to vet for $300 + vet bills. Panacur for worms tip really helped me out with my fur babies. It's $42 bucks a pop at vets office. Smh . You actually care about the critters/folks over the all mighty dollar . I salute you🫡
I have made homemade dog food for years, hit and miss ingredients. So grateful for this informative recipe and guidance. Off to the store, then cooking this. Thank you over and over…
I have been feeding my bulldog your turkey homemade recipe from years ago. He had been having horrible skin issues and interdigital cyst. In the few weeks he’s been eating your recipe ( he absolutely loves btw) his dry skin stopped flaking, no more yeasty smell, hair stopped falling out. All around happier pup. We still are dealing with the interdigital cyst but that is a whole war in itself. I am gonna try this beef recipe and see if the turkey could be a trigger for him. Thanks Dr. Jones for loving all our babies like you do.
Are you still having problems with interdigital cysts? Did you see his 'Excessive Paw Licking' episode? He recommends Olive Leaf Extract capsules (as a natural antibiotic) 1-2mg per lb 2Xday for 10-14 days and soak 2Xday in Chlorhexidine OR Black Tea OR... A mixture of 1 cup nettle or green tea, 2 Tbs each melted coconut oil & Apple Cider vinegar, 10 drops of lavender essential oil.
Thank you for your homemade dog food ideas. I have been making my own dog food for over a year now, after two of my dogs died from eating commercial dog food. I feed them three meals a day, small portions, starting with organic ground beef over quinoa, then sardines with brown rice, and finally ground pork with peas and carrots. I'll be adding flax, calcium and eggs after watching your video. Thank you so much! Krista
@@oscarcat1231 Dry commercial food is.prone to alphatoxicosis a toxic fungi found in many vet approved dry foods and wet foods contain toxins..look it up..cheers
She really does look very happy watching you cook all of this for her. She looks like such a healthy dog. I love this, thank you so much for sharing this.
My great grandfather used to feed his horses raw eggs, so that their coat was healthy and shiney. I read a vet medicinal book from the 1800s. It recommended feeding plow horses hemp/Marijuana in good size portions (don't remember the portions vs hay). One of the big benefits that was attributed to this mix was that the horses were happy plowing in circles all day. Happy horses are better workers, same as happy people. A good work environment makes for happy workers.
Pretty good recipe some things I like to add to my dogs food are diatomaceous earth, spirulina, phytoplankton, milk thistle, turmeric, saurkrout, mushrooms, apple cider vinegar, honey. herbs, cinomin and a freeze dried mix of glands and organs. Not all at once of course I switch it up.
Yep my opinion your pet IS a family member. While they cant eat ALL the foods (diet/toxicity restrictions) that humans can they deserve home cooked food too. For my Pomeranian I spend 5 hours of cooking to feed my Pomeranian 2 meals per day for 30 days. Of course shes smaller so its easier than for a large dog but cooking for a week or 2 all in one time should be doable. If you can't cook for your pet you shouldn't have one to begin with. If you're disabled and use a pet to help you physically or mentally and you cant cook then have someone you trust cook for you for your pet.
I rescued a 5 yr old Queensland Red/Merl Heeler!!! I’ve had her 2 months. Poor thing would sneak up on kibble. Bowl stayed full all day . Was constipated. She literally knocks me down at feeding time now. Can barely make her sit so excited. Beautiful coat , prancing around like a puppy. Amazing diet change has done , a changed animal. Thank you sir for all you do❤
I notice my senior dog has more peep in his step too. Wow is your Heeler polite or pushy? I like the breed but the that dog breed was bred to keep things in line that’s funny. The don’t have the name Heeler for nothing. Must be a joy to your family! Lol 😂

Love your videos and all the great tips. Two years ago I adopted what I was told was a six year old Pomeranian. Well, he wasn't neutered, house trained, or vaccinated. He had ten rotten teeth, and gross crusts in the corners ofboth eyes. After his teeth cleaning and extractions, and feeding him a healthy diet he has gained gained five pounds, and is not over weight at 19lbs. His poop looks normal and has little odor, before it was a thin as my little finger, and looked like a stick of chalk. His eyes are bright, no crusts, but sadly he is totally blind, the vet said he is at least ten years old, probably more, I often feed him wild salmon, brown rice, eggs and veggies, and Ezekiel flourless sprouted bread toasted which he loves, he now looks and acts like a totally different dog. Although this free dog, has now cost well over $2000.00 in vet bills so far, and needs another $2000.00 worth of dental extractions. He'd better live at least another six years to make up for it. That's the least he could do! LOL He is a mini-German Spitz, not a Pomeranian. He went from about to be euthanized to being a happy healthy animal, that everyone makes a fuss of, and will likely enjoy many more years of being pampered. Thank you so much for the recipe, and mentioning about all the added supplements, I am going to add it to Schatzi's menu. No doubt he'll be doing a lot more pirouettes when demanding his dinner!
Excited to make this! You said the calcium is basically ground up eggshells. Have you considered just throwing the eggs whole into a blender and blending them up? Seems like a waste to throw away the eggshells and they buy powdered eggshells and add them back in.
I bake the egg shells I have used to dry them, then pulverize them in a coffee grinder or smoothie making blender. Beware though, you may need a rubber glove or device to get the lid off after you’ve ground the egg shells, since the particles do get stuck in the mechanism. It’s a great, and cheap, and easy way to get the calcium without wasting anything. Then I put the pulverized mixture into a container for future use.
We have been giving our dogs cooked beef or chicken liver it’s much less expensive than all the fancy foods the dogs love it keeps their weight, good and keep some healthy. We had some in stinks dried pellets to it also or a little bit of instinct kibble
@@wisemanbell6957 I used to dislike cats and now that I have one, I LOVE cats so much and wonder how I lived without a cat growing up. I found my kitty on the sidewalk at 3 weeks old last year, and she is so sweet and loves to cuddle. 💗
I love this. I have a Saint Bernard and another 95 pound German Shepherd Lab mix so I might just have to supplement this as a meal a couple times a week. But it’s got to help. I always try to give them fresh organ meats a couple times weekly as is but this was so informative. Finding a good dog food feels impossible. Those marketed are crazy expensive!!
I lightly cook. Raw can technically be a bit better but also comes with some risks that I am not willing to take. See Dr. Karen Beckers site- and The Forever Dog for free recipes. I make all homemade and he loves it. Soft Boiled eggs are one key ingredient. They actually yield more nutrition than even a raw egg according to the research she shares in the book. Eggs must be PASTURED.
Raw is better, but it must be fresh, human grade, and stored and handled correctly. I've been raw feeding for over 40 years and my diet is based on 70% muscle meat (all varieties of meat, oily fish and eggs) 10% offal (half of this being ox liver or kidney) 10% edible bone - poultry, rabbit, etc, soft bones that can be chewed up easily and digested. (We also give recreational bones ((large meaty bones for chewing)) 10% plant matter - cooked rice/pasta/oats, a variety of vegetables, fruit, berries, nuts. I add dried ginger spice, Sunflower seeds, kelp and brewers yeast, to shore up any vitamins & mineral deficiencies. You can add coconut oil, olive oil, Greek yoghurt, flax, hemp, bone broth, etc. Variety is the key to successful raw feeding. Depending on your dogs fat requirements, adjust as needed. My own dogs are large breed, working hunters, extremely active, so I feed up to 25% fat. Puppies need a lot more fat than adults. And elderly, desexed, overweight dogs need much, much less fat, but they do need some.
@@smackpointgsps1476 Thanks for sharing- great info. I brought him a meaty large bone and he chewed on it for 20 minutes then never touched it again. I also add magnesium, and a ground up whole egg shell for calcium. Do you add any salt? I know that dogs do need some daily...but not much. Which meats or other things are good for fat? I am reading The Forever Dog (Dr. Karen Becker.) She states that the ratio for a dog is 44 Protein, 52% FAT and 4% carbs. Is there a brand of Brewers Yeast that you like?
@@MOAB-UT there are many ratios that people recommend, but I have found the one I am using works best for my dogs. It replicates whole prey, which I am also feeding. As with any diet, it's what works best for the individual. For fat, free range pork fat is good, as it contains more vit D, but I feed all varieties of fat, as it comes, attached to meat.

@@kreativa95 Yes, organ meat is part of a balanced diet.. I feed my dog raw food but I imagine cooked food needs the same variety.. I use every meat and fish I know I can get at reasonable cost.. including heart, liver and kidney the latter two I only add a couple of times a week, mixed veg, eggs, a few berries or apple, she adores bananas - we share a banana for a treat! - fish oil, seaweed, live yoghurt, a turmeric black pepper and coconut oil mix for her arthritis, and lately because it works for me for joints and digestion..a spoon of cider vinegar mixed with honey, and she gets small bones like a chicken wing or the smaller leg bone and occasionally a nice big beef knuckle bone she can get all the marrow out of and enjoy knawing on for a while before she buries it in the garden. She's 14 now and had arthritis already when I got her aged 9 but while she's slowed down and starting to find it not so easy to jump onto the bed or into the car now, and I have a ramp for her if needed. She's a black and white sheepdog and lived 7 years on a short chain in a muddy farm yard tied to a barrel fed only soaked maize flakes with a few cheap dog nuts thrown before rescue so she's doing well.

My recipe is almost tge same as this one. Made me feel great to know. I addchicken livers and turkey. Plus I grind up 1/2 egg shell per meal to increase protein, spinach and brussel sprouts and shredded carrots, because my dog loves them
Just made this today for my picky Pomeranian, but love of my life and has tummy issues. She LOVED this, a little too much. She loves food, but has never had “dog food”. I’ve always stuck with chicken or turkey and she did ok with it, but after a while she just wouldn’t eat it. So happy she likes this. Now I have a new recipe to change around with. 🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻
Doc you are the best! Thank you for this video. We have transitioned to home cooked food for our chow as our vet advised it would be best to avoid cancer etc. It's been hard to research portions, recipes etc so we really appreciate this.

Have been enjoying your videos! I'm a canner for everything including dog food! I like to pressure can different meats for dog food and he loves them! In fact.. he gets SO excited when he sees a mason jar come out a meal time.. lol. I include in my mixes organ meats as well. We are also hunters so that would include any venison.. which he loves! I even do pork which is his favourite. We tried a raw food diet with him as a pup which he did not take to.. so then I moved to trying our older freezer meat in a crock pot and it was the best thing I could've done for him! When I make him the canned food I mostly use (very little) sweet potato, oatmeal, carrots, peas, white rice, and/or blueberries. Now I want to try chard.. since I do grow it in my backyard. We have a runt of two large mountain breed dogs which are normally 80-120lbs..but he is only 65lbs thick! We do not know what type of abuse he suffered as a pup.. but we rescued his fuzzybutt.. he's anatolian shep & meremma.
This is a great recipe. I been reading many many comments about different recipes and preparations. One of the best ones I came across, because of my upbringing and background, is of a woman who cans her dog food. She also described the types of meats as her family are hunters. I was very impressed because I had forgotten about canning meat. Why not can dog food?
Thank you for the dog food guidance, Dr. Jones! Unfortunately, my local stores in the rural area don't stock swiss chard, so I substitute spinach instead. I boil the vegetable portion of sweet potatoes, spinach, and green beans in the chicken broth. Recently, there's been a growing trend on social media warning about how processed foods harm humans, and I appreciate your application of similar principles to pets. If only you were my local vet!
Just found your channel and already have found the answers I have been searching for. I will not take my dog to a vet again unless it’s an emergency. Thanks for your info!
Thank you! I have made it before but didn't add everything you did. How very helpful!!! I am about to start making it again....had four foot surgeries in 10 months and its been quite a year! I am now at the point where I am walking better and can do it!

My pup has recurring pancreatitis that we've managed well for a long time. She is half on wet food, Royal Canin low fat/gastro and half homemade. My vet said to avoid beef because of the fat content so I use chicken (sometimes some fish) but I make something very similar to what you've made. I add some sweet potato and carrot too. Love the flax idea!
Our dogs have recurring pancreatitis too and are on science diet low fat . we want to start making food for them. Could you please send me your recipe? I’m worried if we try to do it on our own, we will make something with too much fat and make them sick again. Very much appreciate your help! Thanks!
Check out the ingredient list on your Royal Canin.... I can't speak for the wet food but my personal experience with a cat I had many years ago and the vet wanting me to switch her food over to Royal Canin or the Science Diet brand (conveniently he sold both brands in his lobby). So, I sd I check it out and first thing I did was look at the ingredient list and both brands had CORN as the first 3 ingredients. Needless to say, I did not switch her food over nor did I go back to that vet ever again.

Paws of Prey is a great raw feeding channel with a ton of info! It helped me transition my puppy and she’s now on a balanced raw diet. If you’re afraid to DIY the meals, you can buy a good quality commercial raw grind (I use BJ’s Raw but have heard A+ and Viva are great as well! Primal and Ziwi Peak also have some great freeze dried raw if you don’t want to go fully raw)
I never feed raw meat to my dogs, too high probability of having parasites. The only raw thing I feed is the wild salmon. It should be frozen first, then I salt it lightly and leave in the fridge for a day. Then I and my dogs eat it. It's great for the skin and coat.

My Dog is 5 years old and has environmental allergies we battle every spring and fall, but this year has been especially tough. I just made my two Chihuahuas some homemade dog food…With: cooked lean hamburger, mixed in 6 eggs, One and a half cup cooked brown rice, finely ground clean eggshells, ground flax seed, hemp seed hearts, cooked carrots, frozen fresh kale, avocado oil. The carrots were nearly done steaming and I added the kale and I put them in the blender briefly. My girls don’t like to see those vegetables, but it taste good. Then I tossed all of the ingredients together in a big bowl, and then I divided it into portions . Placing them into, freezer bags for their daily meal . This actually helped me feed my little Phoebee , who had 3 teeth extracted , one with stitches, and dental cleaning. Phoebee will not open her mouth for me, even to get in an antibiotic or pain pill. So…she did suffer last night, plus she would not drink or eat, but this morning I gave her plastic medicine dispenser full of water every hour about 3, and gave her a small bit of honey as an antibiotic. They did give her a shot , but so happy to do it naturally. Her daughter Dottie liked the new food also, and I know they will grow to love it.
Yeah, avocado is deadly. I give my large dog broccoli and cauliflower before the main course. He eats them from my hand, but if I put them in his bowl he ignores the vegies and goes for the meat.
I follow your recipe since I saw it and my pitbull loved it... I also buy your Ultimate Canine Advanced formula... my 2 year old pitbull is very healthy...
Good thing I watched. I had cut Gingers protein back to 15 percent because I heard it wrong. It’s only been a week so no harm done. Back up to 50%, no complaints from her.🐕
@@kathleenkendalljacksgrandm6902 Read the Forever Dog. Dogs need Protein and Fats mostly. Then some Omega-3's, Magnesium, Calcium, light sodium, etc. Do you add Magnesium and some crushed up egg shell to the food? I add olive oil as well. The ratios are important. and chicken is not a good meat.
I'm so glad I came across your video!! My poodle and my chihuahua have itch problems. My vet says it's allergies! I'm trying your recipes ! Thank you so much, you are probably saving my pups from allergy misery!
I stopped feeding my dogs with dog food. Brown rice, egg, pumpkin, turmeric, fish oil or omega supplement, home cooked meat, chicken breast or liver and lean meat pork. My 10 yr old and 8 yr old aspens loved it. Their fur is shinier and they become more vigorous. My 10 yr old eye sight had improved too.❤
Loved this video , as always ! Question , my 14 year of miniature pincher has had two bouts of pancreatitis, not severe . She does not care for her prescription low-fat diet , so I still had low-fat cottage cheese , or boiled chicken breast to entice her to eat . Is the diet suitable for her ?? I’m concerned about the additional fat supplement and oil and I’ve been advised to not give her egg yolks , just the whites . I would appreciate your advice as it saddens me that she does not enjoy her meals and I’d like to cook for her but concerned about it being a balanced diet . 😊
My dog of 14.5 years old passed away this March. Before he went to the vet he stopped eating I thought he didn't like the food so I spent hours shopping and cooking for him with meat and veggies stuff he liked to eat, yet he throw up! It became such horrible days for me until I took him to vet and the vet suggested he was in a critical condition (DKA-eating too much yummy food =( )that euthanasia maybe a humane thing to do. That was the worse day of my life to see my pup left me in sleep 😢 it’s been 4 months and I am still sad about his leaving 😭

Thank you for this recipe. I’ve been cooking my senior dog’s food for a couple years now. I use turkey and chicken meats and just started using some ground beef. I bake not fry. I will now include chard in my veggie mix.
It's important to add water to flaxseed and let it soak then the gooey liquid along with the seeds is consumed. The body won't be able to get the nutrients out of just the dry seeds
Thank you! I have been doing this for my dog for the last year and he's healthier than ever. I got a few extra tips from this video and I will be incorporating them next batch!
❤️
Thats a beautiful story, thank you for sharing it. You are an amazing & brave woman at 65 yrs young. Namaste💙🌹
My hat OFF to YOU ❗️
That is wonderful, but what was the veterinarian and the technician doing, when you arrived? Were they standing around, doing nothing and letting the animals drown in their cages? I cannot believe or imagine two people who are in professions regarding caring for animals, ignoring the plight of animals trapped and drowning in cages.
Wow, you are a hero! God bless you! That’s an amazing story!
This man is a angel.
Thanks for making this so accessible to people who want better than commercial dog food but don't want to risk nutritional deficiencies.
Food aside. Your dog is an angel to sit so patiently watching this stuff being made!

I do like this, however I have recently heard that pulses such as peas, lentils, and white potatoes need to be avoided in dog foods.
@@SimpleLife365 actually those items are all fine as long as your recipe is 50% meat

I use silicone muffin tins to portion out and freeze my pomeranian's homemade food (been making his food and snacks since he was a baby) The frozen "muffins" are super easy to pop out for storing in a freezer bag.

@@sluk313 Thank you! I have those on hand. Thank you for answering my question.

I make a similar dog food, but instead of rice I use the same amount of quinoa and my dogs love it. I have one that doesn’t like brown rice so I switched to quinoa and they all seem to love it more. The overall health of my dogs has improved so much over the past three years since they started eating my homemade food.
I use oatmeal.
Quinoa is better for dogs
Oatmeal is good also
My 3 shih tzu likes quinoa too. With chicken, chopped kale, pumpkin and blueberries
My 15 year old dog has no teeth so I mix quinoa and broken rice to her meals. She loves rice lol.
You can also feed them raw diet its very beneficial for their skin.
@@sussybaka551 Absolutely agree with you

Thank you Dr Jones You are the Very Best!
yellow poop is the worst!
Great advice about the liver and turmeric. Thanks 🙏
How do you drain out the extra fat @@joanies6778
You said everything I was thinking :)
Just wanted to add brown rice is also high in the anti-nutrient phytic acid, so all those supposed "extra" vitamins it contains are not bioavailable. This diet is also a bit high in fatty acids; the eggs/flax should cover omega 3, the meat is high in omega 6. And be VERY careful with supplementing any fish oil with intact male dogs as it can actually increase their risk of prostate cancer.
I thought raw was better ?

True!
Sick. Drugging animals so they can do slave labor. Not cool Joel no matter how you spin it.
Just a note.. Hemp is not marijuana. The same family of plants.. But not the same "medicinal"side effects..😊.
I did Volunter work for the National Horse Show and they say this as well. Thank you for sharing.
LMAO

I always try to give them fresh organ meats a couple times weekly as is but this was so informative. Finding a good dog food feels impossible. Those marketed are crazy expensive!!
Can you do a video on feeding cooked vs raw food. Would love to know the pros and cons of either
I've been raw feeding for over 40 years and my diet is based on 70% muscle meat (all varieties of meat, oily fish and eggs)
10% offal (half of this being ox liver or kidney)
10% edible bone - poultry, rabbit, etc, soft bones that can be chewed up easily and digested. (We also give recreational bones ((large meaty bones for chewing))
10% plant matter - cooked rice/pasta/oats, a variety of vegetables, fruit, berries, nuts.
@@smackpointgsps1476 Thank you.

Can you provide portion levels for your food recipe for dog weight? My dog is an 8-month old Australian Shepherd, 40lbs.
Always appreciate your videos, going to make this for my pups. Thank you for showing labels on the products used, if you use them then I trust them. To our family you are a "real vet," because you care and have integrity which is far and few between these days🐾❤️🐾❤️🐾
This man is a wonderful guy He has given his life to helping our pets live their best lives!! Thank you Dr Jones and your free E book is fantastic
I'm so glad you have made your own vitamins for our pets I so will order it❤
Vet approved Balanced dog diet for 6days/2meals daily
50% animal protein : 1/8 carbs : 1/8 Veggies
1lb animal protein per 50lbs dog body weight daily
Ingredients based on a 25lb body weight dog for 6 days/2 meals daily
3lbs lean ground beef, 6 eggs (yolks have anti cancer vitD), 3cups frozen chard, 3cups cooked brown rice, 3tbsps sunflower oil, 1tbsp calcium carbonate, 3tbsp ground flax….. additionally add 1) 1cap Krill or a omega3 fatty acid and 2) joint and bone health vitamin separately per meal (so fresh and not oxidizing in your 6day meal mix)
Great idea, canning dog food. 🙂❤️.
That's a fantastic idea! Thanks for posting this. I hope more people read this.
This Dr is great right to the point
Thank you for the dog food guidance, Dr. Jones! Unfortunately, my local stores in the rural area don't stock swiss chard, so I substitute spinach instead. I boil the vegetable portion of sweet potatoes, spinach, and green beans in the chicken broth. Recently, there's been a growing trend on social media warning about how processed foods harm humans, and I appreciate your application of similar principles to pets. If only you were my local vet!
Just found your channel and already have found the answers I have been searching for. I will not take my dog to a vet again unless it’s an emergency. Thanks for your info!
Welcome!
Love how precious Tula watches you with such love in her poddle eyes 🥰
Thank you! I have made it before but didn't add everything you did. How very helpful!!! I am about to start making it again....had four foot surgeries in 10 months and its been quite a year! I am now at the point where I am walking better and can do it!
What other veggies do you recommend using? And grains? Could you do another video where you explain what proteins veggies and grains are good for dogs especially dogs are sensitive stomachs please.
We do have articles that can help together with our Ultimate Supplements:

My pup has recurring pancreatitis that we've managed well for a long time. She is half on wet food, Royal Canin low fat/gastro and half homemade. My vet said to avoid beef because of the fat content so I use chicken (sometimes some fish) but I make something very similar to what you've made. I add some sweet potato and carrot too. Love the flax idea!
My three standard poodles enjoy Canadian Naturals large breed kibble with added meat and CBD oil.

My Yorkie is on Hills Prescription I/D low fat wet food. She is doing good on it but she has lost weight and is a little too thin. I would like to make her food as well but trying to figure out the necessary vitamins, minerals, oils, and the correct amounts hurts my brain
@@planofsalvation1 I have a Yorkie that has periodical digestive issues, she is currently on the same food and is also losing weight. I know I need to get more fat or protein into her diet. I know I will have to do it gradually. She also seems to be hungry all the time.
Thank you I believe in making my own but never knew what to add Thank you so so so much! I have tried so many to No avail, costly Dr remedies. How do I get your
I make my dogs food, also and it is almost the same as your recipe except for the eggs, I hard boil the eggs and chop them up shell included and add to the beef. They love it.
I would think the eggshells would be sharp and actually hurt if you didn't grind them up...
THANKS ......
GOOD to see you. You and Tula. Hope you and fam are well. Norridge .IL.
so funny you posted this! I was just talking tonight about swapping my dogs' canned food out for homemade food! Thanks for this! :)
See Dr. Karen Becker for free recipes on her site. Read The Forever Dog.
Please, explain why dogs need the carbs, brown rice etc...? Thank you! for all you do!😊🙏
Organ meats are essential- but only organic. I feed my 16 year old Long Hair Mini Dachshund RAW organic chicken liver and RAW organic chicken hearts along with a homemade Organic : COOKED turkey, carrot, celery, eggs, Olive oil, omega 3 oil and an organic probiotic which has vitamins for an older dog. She is still a very playful pup and has LOTS of energy🥰❣️
Do you have more details you can share, of you have time? Just a more detailed instruction/ products. My older baby is breaking my damn heart....
I have a 16.5 year old mini as well who has pancreatitis. It's been a challenge to get her to eat lately so am trying to find new recipes for her other than the prescription food which she doesn't care for.

Tula ( tout là) in French means “complete , all here” . Love you as a vet and your wonderful holistic approach. Works wonderfully. Thank goodness for your videos / channel!
My Dog is 5 years old and has environmental allergies we battle every spring and fall, but this year has been especially tough. We took her to a vet that was not helpful, didn't give much advice, I got the feeling he didn't care and gave me a treatment costing $800 every 6-8 weeks. When we told him that was not an option for our finances, he recommend Zyrtech from the store. We were already giving her antihistamines, but we got that. She has gotten a lot worse now. She eats pretty healthy and we supplement with Omega 3 in Salmon oil. I am truly happy with Dr. Jones simple to follow advice and am grateful to find him. Gonna Try and I'm sure we'll get results, anything is better than here miserable itching, sore situation. Just glad to have somewhere to turn.
I love this recipe for my dogs. I’m going to begin doing this because two of my dogs is constantly itching. My daschund has very bad allergies. Thank you Doctor and thank you Tula for letting other doggies love your dads recipe!!! ❤🐶
I am going to do this for my girl. She will loooove it. Thank you.
I have a question, my dog used to drink alot of water. Since making his food homemade he hardly drinks water, is this normal? Love your videos!
I cook my bones for bone broth and then the bones are soft and they fall apart my dog always gets them as well as broth daily. also give my dog a turkey neck raw for bone .
I also do organ meat with the muscle meat. With blueberries, veggies and sweet potato.
With my dog having bone broth daily do I need to also add the ultimate canine advance ?
Thanks for tip on krill I will definitely be adding that and the sunflower oil.
I so appreciate your channel God bless you and you doggy
Thanks for sharing!❤️
Cauliflower is also a great carb substitute. If weight is a concern. I've noticed some dogs gain weight, REAL quick, when fed straight rice, daily. Just something to consider.
Cabbage is recommended for dogs that have weight issues
@@dreamlife2351 how do you prepare the cabbage ? My dog is over weight and it's causing troubles with her heart . So I need to act fast on helping her lose some of that weight.
@@rehanna2106 hi there. Just select your amount and finely chop and mix in with food
Start with a small amount to replace some kibble then work up to maybe 1/3-1/2 bowl. Watch his/her poop.
@@rehanna2106 I recommend buying low fat fresh meats. Like solid white chicken breast. And fish. If your dog is on kibble, and used to kibble, yea, as someone else said. Just start mixing away! And keep an eye on poops! Maybe half kibble, a 1/4 veggies, and a 1/4 fresh low fat meat. Use cabbage or Cali flower, carrots, green beans.
You are amazing! My vet nurse says Charlie is thriving on home cooked food. I get him a free range chicken & cook it in the pressure cooker. Added veggies and brown basmati rice. If the chicken runs out, then it's steamed white fish. Job done. Cheers from England xxx
I am definitely keeping this recipe! It sounds delicious...maybe I'll even give some to my pups!😉
Thanks Doc Jones!
How much ground meat per day should a 50 lb dog have? Then after adding veggies how many cups of the whole mixture a day? I am using kelp flax hemp hearts and ground up egg shells in it. Sweet potato green beans kale broccoli and duck egg.
I am not a dog owner but I have 2 grand dogs and will past on this very valuable information to my daughter. She has recently making her 2 dogs homemade food. But I think she's missing important ingredients. So I thank you for providing such important advice. Hope she'll subscrbe.
I would love a copy of this book, I have two Doberman’s, a fawn and a blue with Skin allergies and sensitive stomach, I raise my own chickens and Im able to buy fresh pasture raised beef. It’s been so nice to be able to make at least half the food they eat. I do buy some local kibbles that are made with high quality ingredients because I really was worried about the dogs getting enough vitamins and minerals. This is great help! We all thank you!
Thanks Dr. Jones! I feel so vindicated! Then I tossed
all of the ingredients together in a big bowl, and then I divided it into portions .
Avocado is deadly to dogs, did you put avocado oil in your homemade dog food or is it a typo error?
Yeah, avocado is deadly. I give my large dog broccoli and cauliflower before the main course. He eats them from my hand, but if I put them in his bowl he ignores the vegies and goes for the meat.
I follow your recipe since I saw it and my pitbull loved it... I also buy your Ultimate Canine Advanced formula... my 2 year old pitbull is very healthy...
Thank you, I needed this recipe!
Just found this channel... love him. I wish he were our veterinarian.
Good thing I watched. I had cut Gingers protein back to 15 percent because I heard it wrong. It’s only been a week so no harm done. Back up to 50%, no complaints from her.🐕
I don't think 50% is enough.
@@MOAB-UT. I think it’s enough. I’m always worried about too much phosphorus.
Thank you. I love seeing homemade food
What a great channel. So glad this showed up on my feed. I subscribed after seeing his first video.
My 10 yr old eye sight had improved too.❤
What do you use for fish oil?
Loved this video , as always !
Question , my 14 year of miniature pincher has had two bouts of pancreatitis, not severe . She does not care for her prescription low-fat diet , so I still had low-fat cottage cheese , or boiled chicken breast to entice her to eat .
Is the diet suitable for her ??
I’m concerned about the additional fat supplement and oil and I’ve been advised to not give her egg yolks , just the whites .
I would appreciate your advice as it saddens me that she does not enjoy her meals and I’d like to cook for her but concerned about it being a balanced diet .
😊
Just Brilliant! Thank you Dr Jones. I’m Definitely going to be doing this for my dog 👍❤️🤗
Instand of putting in extra vitamines and minarals you could use spurulina and chlorella dat has every thing human and animalss need.
I'm so sorry. I still grieve for some of my dogs that have been gone for over 10 years.
It never goes away but it will become less painful.
@@moragmacgregor6792 I totally understand, I think it'll be painful for the rest of my life, esp now I can't have any more dogs due to my new life style, but I miss him daily..whenever I think of him, I wanna cry !! :(
I am so sorry for your loss I truly understand that pain it’s been over 5 years and I’m still not ok. ❤
That pain is indescribable!! I know you don’t and can’t replace them.. but don’t try to.. people have “ other children “ and love them all equally, so I am so glad i finally got another baby!! She is the love of my life! And I will always love the ones who i lost.. forever and I think we’ll see all of them again 🕊️keep loving and when you’re ready, get another baby ♥️
I wish my boy was able to go in his sleep, we had a vet come to the house to have him put to sleep.
Thank you for this recipe. I’ve been cooking my senior dog’s food for a couple years now. I use turkey and chicken meats and just started using some ground beef. I bake not fry. I will now include chard in my veggie mix.
You can boil as well..
I have used a similar diet for my labrador retriever, except I use a tablespoon of plain yogurt per day instead of egg shells.
I just found this guy and I plan to go into veterinary practice soon. I can learn so much from him.
