Kenny passed away in March 2020, right at the beginning of the Covid pandemic. And if that's not the most "know when to fold 'em" thing I've ever heard, then I don't know what is. RIP Gambler.
I find this so conflicting that someone who was able to create such a great analogy themselves about the mind and swimming had initially missed the metaphor in this song
I'm glad you're checking out Mr. Kenny, you got 'it' right away. Good for you! Keep them coming, love your enthusiastic reactions! Sending love & peace ❤✌🏼
It's a great tune for sure. I'm not a Country fan either, but Kenny and Dolly I will listen to any day. The story takes place on a train, but other than that you got it exactly. Also, at the end the 'Gambler' gets 'the best that you can hope for', he dies in his sleep. ✌❤
No one tells a story quite like Kenny! May he be resting in peace.❤ As far as perspective on what the song means…like you said “we are all dealt different hands in life, so even everyone’s perspective may be different, but that’s okay because that’s how we all learn to play in the sandbox together!! Loved your reaction and would love more of Kenny!! Be helpful and be kind!! ✌🏼🫶🎶💕
🇬🇧 There's also a movie called The Gambler, which stars Kenny Rodgers. In fact I've just finished watching a movie a couple of hours ago with Kenny in it called "Wid Horses". Now give "Coward Of The County" by Kenny a listen. It's one of his best for storytelling, you will be so glad you did. 🎼 RIP Kenny🕯️
You got it. It's an analogy for life. I always thought of the "every hand's a winner & every hand's a loser" part to mean that we're all dealt a 'set of cards' in life. And whether your hand is a 'winner' or a 'loser' depends on how you play them (i.e. what you 'keep' what you 'let go', etc.). So you could start with a 'good' hand, and blow it. Or you could start with a 'bad' hand, make good choices & end up winning.
My grandad was a huge country fan. I would sing along to the "Gambler" by Kenny Rogers as a child with him. When he died he left his cassette player and his entire music collection of tapes to me 🥰
Kenny was the king of story songs like this. Yes, this is life advice in this one. A couple others by him are 'Coward of the county' & 'Lucielle'. You can hear the songs without seeing the video & still picture the story perfectly in your mind. A sweet one that melts my heart, check out 'The greatest'. Kenny has a ton of great music.
This is one of my favorites from Mr Kenny Rogers The Gambler . If you noticed in the video the the portrait you see to the right of him is one of General Lee . I just wanted to say that . My graduation song was through the years from Mr Rogers. You Hit it right behind the eyes and right were it Matters about living or gambling.
I've never liked country music but my mom loved Kenny when I was griwing up so I heard this song a lot. This song and Coward Of The County had made for tv movies made about them (he was in both) that weren't too bad.
@@setonhillstudiosthey made 5 "Gambler" movies and made a TV movie from Kenny's hit "Coward of the County"..... Kenny was in a few movies.... His song "Love will Turn you around" was used in another Kenny move "Six Pack".....
Great reaction! During Covid - the Acapella band HOME Free did a cover of this song - all parts recorded separately. Kenny heard of the band and contacted Home Free. They did a colab of Children Go Where I Send Thee - with HF & Kenny - and it is incredible!! If you have time - check out both - HF's Gambler, and the colab with Kenny. Just amazing!
You are so on- target about this song deals with LIFE and Life's lessons. The line I love, since I counsel children and adolescents, is the one that says, " on a train headed no-where, I met up with a Gambler".....says a lot about adolescents who have no direction or know what to do to deal with what is dealt with them in life. Kenny is one of the best. I'll look through your channel and see what you've done already and then may pass on some other great icons for you to put on your future lists.
This song is technically a ballad, (a narrative song that tells a story). It's interesting how many songs that are not truly ballads are called such, yet a song like this one which is exactly that, is not generally thought of as a ballad.
like Garth Brooks, Kenny started out trying to be a rockstar, but just couldnt find his niche in the rock world. and like Garth, Kenny became on of the most influential country singers of his generation. cant go wrong with Kenny
"The Gambler" is a song written by Don Schlitz and recorded by several artists, most famously by American country singer Kenny Rogers. And in case you missed it, the gambler "broke even" means he died on that train bound to nowhere.
@@setonhillstudios The lyrics actually point it out pretty directly, when it says "And in his final words I found an Ace that I could keep." The long-standing usage of 'final words' is that they are taken from a person's final conversation, quite often the last things said before they die.
In the beginning of the gambler, said “I can see you’re out of aces so for a sip of your whiskey, I’ll give you some advice.” At the end the end he said “in his final words, I found an ace that I could keep.” The ace card is considered special, (card games and life ) like a hidden advantage or resource. Phrases such as “he has an ace up his sleeve” or He had an ace in his back pocket,” etc. were fairly common years ago 😎
Kenny Rogers is an iconic singer and songwriter. A few years ago, Kenny passed away. Home Free did a tribute to him with this song. You need to check out Coward of The County. It is really awesome. Love your reaction!
He cut a baseball song written by the same songwriter Don Schlitz that wrote “The Gambler” Phenomenal yet simple tune with a unique unexpected twist. Also about 15 years later after that one he cut his final PHENOMENAL duet with Dolly Parton called “You Can’t Make Old Friends” also written by Don Schlitz
If you like good storytelling in Country & Western songs, you really must check out El Paso, by Marty Robbins, and the follow-up, Felina. Beautiful voice, and a tragic storyline.
Nope, your spot on about it being lessons about life.Thats the secret sauce about country storytelling.Good or bad it's about the happenings of life.Listen to his song you picked a fine time to leave me Lucille. You have to prevent that one from happening
Seen you enjoyed Dolly, And like Kenny. Hear the two of them together singing, Islands in the stream. pull up Dollys and Kennys final performance. Islands in the stream. Kenny's Retirement.
2 for 2 with Mr Rogers!! But I always found it strange in the beginning when he meets "the gambler". Before he shares his wisdom with Kenny he bums some liquor and smokes off of him. Doesn't sound like a successful gambler, is what I'm getting at. 😆😆 It's like me giving advice about healthy living🤣🤣🥞🧁🍰🥩 But an excellent song by Kenny and co.
Have you really not heard the gambler before? I’m not a big country music fan but this is quite a well known song. Your wife would be spot on with ‘who hasn’t’ 😊
If you want another great Kenny song where it also has an analogy for how your outlook on life should be, react to Kenny Roger’s The Greatest. Promise you won’t be disappointed. It’ll feel good right in the heart
Check out some Hank Williams jr...he does everything from traditional country, blues to southern rock. Sometimes he mixes those three together. Here's how talented he is: Instrument(s)Vocals/guitar/banjo/piano/keyboards/harmonica/fiddle/drums - he does it all.
I just watched your “Brandy” reaction. The “rock” Kenny was announcing Looking Glass….when Kenny was a part of the rock group New Edition. Please React to: What Condition my Condition was In.
When you like good Storytelling you need to react to Rammstein but it will get hard. The wordplay is intentional! Maybe as an analogy: Kenny Rodgers is like Tarantino and Rammstein is like Lynch. Both are genius but on completely different approaches.

Kenny's "Lucille" is one of the best story-telling songs ever. For this one, I definitely like the studio version over the live.
