I would definitely put this in his top 5, especially because of the context. Among his other bests are 96 Monaco, 96 Argentine GP, 98 Suzuka, most of 97/98 poles actually. Those Newey Mclarens were rockets, and Schumacher was consistently driving the 2nd - 4th fastest cars. Also the face that those cars were harder to drive, Schumacher had that much more advantage over everyone else.
This was Probably Michael’s Greatest pole lap. Wish he started from the front fare chance he would have stayed there. Don’t think the car failure would have occurred in clean air.

It is a stick that can move forward or backward to adjust brake balances but nowadays drivers like to adjust it faster so they use switches on the steering wheel, back in Schumacher era they used stick to adjust that. you can check some old video clips
@@gerhardchen There was actually two ways to do it (the stick and a knob on the steering wheel), and, depending on where on the track he was, and the amount he needed to change (the knob could do more fine-grained adjusting than the stick), Michael would use either of the two.
I read this article recently where the contention is that Michael's driving style and setup preferences didn't really suit these 2010-2012 machinery and Pirelli tyres. Monaco's the sort of place where his natural style - loose back end and incredible car control - minimizes the how understeery these cars were. And wet weather. What a lap.
Strange how many likes people have for this comment, without knowing any facts. That Merc was very aggressive on tires, which was why it was good on a single lap. Not very good at all in a race distance though. Michael was like his old self here, but sadly he was very inconsistent at times. He deserved to stay in that team though, because without all the car failures that were out of his control, he would've beaten Nico over the season.
Greiguci Wootchie that’s because Monaco is not a track where a car with high top speed is required. It is a track where the set up through the slow corners has to be good and also where the skills of the driver is very important.Michael is and was the best driver of all time.
What a little star. Pole position, well done Michael. Fantastic, well done. Looking back it’s wonderful to hear Ross Brawn’s voice. You can feel their deep friendship in those words. And I guess Ross knew how difficult those times really were for Michael. I am also sure that the consequent development of those years (especially with the help of Brawn and Schumacher) paved the way to the long success series of Mercedes in F1.
I hope schumacher comes back to the sport, maybe as an advisor, or training young drivers, or just watching his son race keep fighting legend I hope someday I can see him on tv again in the paddock
That's a 43 year old driver achieving a pole position lap in qualifying in Monaco. Despite how his ride with Mercedes was, this just shows the pure skill Michael had. Those who claim Hamilton to be the GOAT, this man was building foundations for this team. After 2021 i can honestly say i wish he hadn't. Luckily Ham will never match his 5 titles in a row record. Ever.

Not many know that he came back to the sport with left brain and vertebrae injuries from the superbike accident he had in 2009. Yet he put this car on 'pole' at Monaco, at the age of 43.
Maybe he would even be there for another season. They dropped him because he had less points than Rosberg but this was mainly because of China where Rosberg won and he had a DNF due to a error of his pit crew. Schumi was equally, if not better than Nico in 2012.

Michael was born to race and this right here is all the proof you need. To nail a lap around one of the most complex tracks on the F1 calender in a frankly average car and to best everyone else at the grand old age of 43 is simply incredible. This footage never ever ceases to amaze me.

Just watched his pole lap in 1996. And then 16 years later another pole in Monaco. Michael is a legend.
43 years old, with a car that was way far from the top, on the circuit where the driver really matters... GREATEST OF ALL TIME!
There is NOTHING IN THE WORLD like a Schumacher in Monaco onboard video - how lightning fast is he!!
There is, Ayrton Senna at Monaco. He was the king of those streets and still is. Love Michael tho!
Mad man changes his brake bias in every corner while stretching his car's width to its limit out there.. what a driver
His best pole, when the track levels the car disparity, just goes to show the old man still had it.
You didn't watch Schumi in his prime?
@@f1pro299 of course, but that's the point. He was in his prime before he retired, this is a better achievement considering he was past his best and wasn't driving a dominant ferrari.
I would say his greatest pole lap was Malaysia 99, coming back from injury and getting pole by a second, that was just genius
You can't avoid having fuel pressure problems because of clean air. Ask Rubens.
Michael will go down in history as one of the true 'Masters' of the sport. So gifted.
What Schumacher did for me is just amazing , he went to Ferrari where he could just stay at Benetton and win another championship nonono he went into failed Ferrari rebuild it , spend almost all the day in garage improving and building a car and then dominating with it from 00-04 .. and then joining Mercedes and just again took all the time with his team to try and improve it but his time ran out , you cant escape age but he left a mark in F1 that i think no other did not even Senna aldo he was a great racer and great human.
The old man still had it.

He was twice the age of almost every other driver on the grid and took em all back to school even though they all had superior cars and the Mercedes was still being developed at the hands of Schumacher himself.
Merc was kind of the 5th best car in that super competitive 2012 season (so obviously far from the worst).
@@martinusv7433 The car was still in development, the team was literally 2 years old. They were not the 5th best. They had among the fastest straightline speeds because Mercedes engines were the most powerful on the grid but the rest of the car was lacking severely.

@Stan156 yes i have heard Nico & Massa saying this. He would tweak the car constantly while on radio which no other F1 driver could do so easily.

I love the old fashion way to adjust brake bias.
Nowadays renault does it automatically LOL
Gerhard Chen Some teams still use the stick to adjust it

A true Senna-esque lap around Monte Carlo, extracting absolutely everything from the car and using every inch of race track. We miss you Michael.
Forever the Best, we love Schumi🔝🔝🔝
I read this article recently where the contention is that Michael's driving style and setup preferences didn't really suit these 2010-2012 machinery and Pirelli tyres. Monaco's the sort of place where his natural style - loose back end and incredible car control - minimizes the how understeery these cars were. And wet weather. What a lap.
Yes, indeed. Montreal 2011 would have been a victory for him, instead the race was suspended until the rain stopped and the track was dry again.
That car was 1.5 sec a lap slower than any of the top cars and he managed to put it on pole. Unreal.
lol.. idiot
marble89 talking to yourself is weird brah
Strange how many likes people have for this comment, without knowing any facts. That Merc was very aggressive on tires, which was why it was good on a single lap. Not very good at all in a race distance though. Michael was like his old self here, but sadly he was very inconsistent at times. He deserved to stay in that team though, because without all the car failures that were out of his control, he would've beaten Nico over the season.
In Monaco. The only real DRIVERS track where the car is less important than the driver. With 43 Years an absolute beast.
Greiguci Wootchie that’s because Monaco is not a track where a car with high top speed is required. It is a track where the set up through the slow corners has to be good and also where the skills of the driver is very important.Michael is and was the best driver of all time.

Pole position, well done Michael.
Fantastic, well done.
Looking back it’s wonderful to hear Ross Brawn’s voice.

And I guess Ross knew how difficult those times really were for Michael.
I am also sure that the consequent development of those years (especially with the help of Brawn and Schumacher) paved the way to the long success series of Mercedes in F1.

The class of Michael Schumacher was phenomenal
The truth about Schumacher needing his teammates to sign #2 driver contracts so they weren't allowed to beat compete against him on a level playing field has been leaked. His whole first career is based in a lie:
"At the time I handled people like Rubens Barrichello, Eddie Irvine, Giancarlo Fisichella and Jean Alesi, and every time we went to sign a contract with Michael Schumacher or Ferrari it always had conditions in it" - Eddie Jordon.
"Whether I signed with Eddie Irvine, Rubens Barrichello or whoever they were - there was a clause there that they always had to play second-fiddle to Michael Schumacher.' Eddie Jordan
"I had an opportunity to go to Ferrari but the contract that was offered by Jean was that if Michael was 5th and I was 4th, I had to move over, and, if I was 1st and he was 2nd, I had to move over.I couldn't sign a contract that committed me to being a #2" - David Coulthard.
"Ferrari, the contract that was offered effectively made me, on paper, number two to Michael. I've no doubt that Michael was the stronger driver out of the two because I recognise he was a better overall package than I was but at that stage of my career, I just couldn't accept signing a number two contract and that's why I decided to sign at McLaren and I think that was the right decision for my career." David Coulthard.

Maybe he would even be there for another season. They dropped him because he had less points than Rosberg but this was mainly because of China where Rosberg won and he had a DNF due to a error of his pit crew. Schumi was equally, if not better than Nico in 2012.
