What Christianity Is All About - Bishop Barron’s Sunday Sermon

  • Friends, today’s Gospel reveals the essence of Christianity. To believe in Christ means much more than to accept a set of propositions. Christianity involves entering into the space opened up by the death of the Son of God to receive his saving love. When you do this, you are born again; when you do this, you have eternal life.

Five years of psychoanalysis brought me to a place of acknowledgement as I witnessed the darkest side of me. I then concluded: « That was so in my life. » Faith, trust in the Christ who took onto himself the source of the darkest side of me, like a black hole that sucks in matter, brought me to being new in Christ. I then fell forward, feeling for the first time that I was loved as I am and as I am not. I simply cried like a child.

Perhaps one of the most insightful sermons on John 3 that I have ever heard. The Cross reveals just how terrible sin is in God's eyes that He could find only one way to deal with it: the substitutionary death of His Son. Contemplation of the Cross through the conviction of the Holy Spirit leads us to increasingly turn from our sin and by faith turn to Christ Whose life alone can make us holy. Once again, thank you, Bishop Baron, for this insightful sermon.

Thank you, Bishop Barron, for another powerful Homily. This is truly the root and core of Catholicism as we sinful humans cannot save ourselves, but only by our Lord, Jesus Christ, because of the love of the Holy Trinity poured out upon us, and by abiding to His Will (mainly the 1st and 2nd commandments alike), we may be saved through His infinite Grace and Mercy.
"For the sake of His Sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world."

@@kanyestan Ferdinand Magellan who brought the cross to the Philippines in the 1500's was Portuguese who(pls readers, correct me if I'm wrong) was commissioned by the Spanish royalty to make expeditions to the East. It was the Spanish friars, though, who followed up on spreading the Catholic faith. For that we are eternally grateful despite the many evils that they also brought along with them.

I find it interesting how the crucifix (not just the cross) is a new bronze serpent. Many Protestants object to having Jesus on the cross in their churches, I assume because he is risen, however we put him up there, as Bishop said, to reveal our sins. Just as the bronze serpent was put up to save the Israelites from the snakes that God sent after them because of their complaining, so too do we Catholics put up the crucifix to save us from the spiritual snakes of sin.

    Beautiful homily thanks Bishop.
One thing about the image of Jesus crucified that I find fascinating is that not only is it an image of what our sin does to God but what sin does to us. We are nailed down by our sins and to our sins, rendered powerless and addicted to them; even if we want to be free of our sin we cannot. Sin isolates us and like crucifixion we are naked and cold and afraid, suffering the immense pain of being separated from the warmth and life of God and loving community, put to shame before all. Sin also brings on a slow spiritual asphyxiation where we are closed off from the the fresh air of Heaven, unable to take in what we need from the Spirit of Love that gives Life itself. Sin doesn't kill us right away after the first offense, but it leads down a path of agony that leads to a slow tortuous death of the soul.
This is what Jesus entered into, this is what He conquered. He has made sin and death the place where we find Salvation, in our powerlessness and desperation we find God Himself.

Wonderful sermon father, so much explained to me here. Thank you so much, and do you know something just occured to me. The lessons in this video couldn't be more important for the whole world - and yet it comes to us free in a you tube video. You could spend thousands, millions of pounds on material things, go to the ends of the earth looking for happiness, and all that cost and effort would leave you completely empty. And yet boundless, endless peace and happiness comes to us as a free gift.
The world needs to stop following this fad or that material thing, save all that effort and worry and upset and realise all we need is given for free. We don't even need to leave our armchair. God bless you and your ministry, the work you do couldn't be more important.

Bishop Barron thank you! I have been thinking about Good Friday a lot lately, and sometimes I think we only see Good Friday as us seeing our sin and as you say the mercy of God (which of course is true and it speaks to my next thought in truth, not against it) but what we also see when the Son of Man is lifted up is the enthronement of God, yes it was intended to be mocking, but when we understand who Jesus is, that He gave Himself for the life of the world, that He is the face of the invisible God. Our God is not Zeus, He does not throw lightening bolts and He does not cast down our enemies nor His with might, but His might, His power, the Divine power is the power of the Lamb, the Kenosis, self emptying of Christ. We see what it is to be God fully, not just the defeat of sin, but the revelation of God, our God crowned with thorns and enthroned upon the cross from which He rules the world (as the vexilla regis says) Great Video

Wonderful meditation on Jesus on the cross, showing us how ugly our sins are and how his love is infinitely stronger than our sins and death itself. I think of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel image of the serpents biting people in the desert and the bronze serpent on a pole that people looked at to be healed. Wonderful. God bless you
