  • William Wordsworth called Mary, the mother of Jesus, "our tainted nature's solitary boast." Who was this extraordinary woman, and how should we understand the key dogmas about her life and nature? In today's episode, I offer a crash course on Mary. A listener asks why God created us as humans instead of as angels.

@seekouttruths Very well said. God simply wants us to share His divine life in the Community of the Trinitarian Love. The blessed Mother, the two of us and the rest of those who believe in the love and mercy of God, through Christ, are part of this grand design. No loving child of God is left behind. I appreciate your deep reflection. God bless.

WHY is Jesus NOT ENOUGH for you?????????????????????
No matter what you believe about Mary, one undeniable certainty
is that she was human, therefor a creation of God.
So, you have exchanged the truth about God for a lie and
worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator.
I recommend reading the Bible. Trust God, not man.
The one true God is a jealous God that commands we have
no other gods besides Him. Exodus 20:3-6

As an engineer, my response to the challenge that “if it can’t be measured, it isn’t real” is to point out that Love cannot be measured, does that mean that love does not exist. Justice cannot be measured, does that mean it does not exist? Do you, the skeptic hold fast to the position that love and justice do not exist?

In reply to the lady who asked Bishop Barron why God did not make us angels, instead of human beings. I reference something the Great Catholic Saint, Mystic and Stigmatic of the 20th century, Padre Pio once stated. From an early age Padre Pio could converse with his guardian angel, he told us. Once he asked the guardian angel this question: " What was it about men that made the fallen angels so jealous of mankind that they rebelled against God, and lost heaven ?" Padre Pio tells us that his guardian angel replied with this answer, " Because man can suffer for God ". So one may wonder if there were angels who asked, as this lady did, why couldn't God have made us human ? It is something for each of us to ponder, especially when we are beset with suffering in our lives.

      @IONATVS 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

Also, while Bishop Barron brings up the medieval hierarchical understanding of reality, he doesn't bring up one of the most enlightening--and relevant to her question--theories of where humans fit in that hierarchy. Humans, because of their combination of fully free will and *just* enough understanding to be culpable for our actions, but *not* enough understanding to know exactly what the best path is, have a capability that nothing else in the hierarchy of creation has: we can place ourselves anywhere in that hierarchy. Through our choices. an angel can only be a paragon or a demon, but a human's good choices can bring them closer to God than even the angels by choosing to follow God fully despite the limitations and trials of this world--most angels live lives of flawless virtue, but there is nothing heroic about it since they know EXACTLY what to do to live that life, and need face no adversity in doing so. Likewise a human can be as cruel as a demon (though thankfully not as intelligent in their cruelty, at least without demonic aid) or anywhere in-between. Most creatures have their place and must stay there, angels have a binary choice between perfection and madness (for if you know yourself and everyone in the universe will be better off if you choose good but you choose evil anyway for some foolish point of pride, you must be mad), but humans alone in the known creation have the freedom to find a place in the kingdom that is distinctly their own, good but still with constant room to grow better.

In Genesis God says that He WILL PLACE enmity (hatred) between the Woman and the Serpent (satan) and then Jesus only refers to His Blessed Mother as 'Woman'. This is a reference to God's brilliant mind. The proud satan who thinks himself equal to God The Holy One, so God says that it is the humblest woman, a human, and the humblest of humanity, will be the one who crushes the head of the vile serpent. I am sure satan would love us to imagine his enemy is the almighty God, his pride would love losing to God. Now imagine this proud and vile evil one learning that his destruction will be done by this mere human, and worse a woman, and even worse from his pride's point of view, the very humblest of all humanity. So God does not ever see this evil serpent as anything worthy of His slightest concern. God is indeed brilliant.

I tell my Sunday school class that if they ever want to hurt satan, if they want to essentially smack satan upside the head with a brick, say a Hail Mary. Satan is an super intelligent being; he knows that according to nature he can never equal God in power and glory. But for satan to see a being who is his natural inferior enjoy by grace a glory he can never obtain wounds his immense ego considerably.

NaYawkr, Good post yes Genesis 3;15 She Mary will crush the serpent's head.Which will be utter humiliation for Satan a Jewish peasant girl crushing his head.
Read Judges 4;21 where God does use women to defeat the enemy.
21; Jahel Haber's wife took a nail of the tent also taking a hammer to crush the temple of the enemies of his head.
Revelation also talks about a head wound.
Satan is aware Mary is the main enemy her seed faithful Catholics.
Satan since the 12th century has tried to hide even from faithful Catholics the rosary the weapon that will be used to crush Satan and his minions.
Remember David killed Goilath with one stone rosary bead in a sling shot representing the brown scapular of Mary.

Maybe my reflections on the dogma of the bodily assumption will be helpful to those struggling with it - or to those who believe it and remain in wonder!
The dogma says Mary is perfectly redeemed, the representative of perfect redemption. By faith she received salvation into her body. She has received this salvation entire - for her entire being, to the fullest effect and extent. She is already where perfect redemption is: that region of being which came to be through Christ's Resurrection. As the ideal representative for complete redemption, she must be 'even now' in perfect communion with God. She is glorified in soul _and body._ Thus we can say: Mary lives in heaven in her glorified body, in the bodily community of the redeemed, which Christ instituted. Who she was on earth has been assumed fully into heaven by He Who Is.
This has meaning for us all. It signifies that the forces of the world to come have already seized hold of this world. The world is in transition to God's eternity - not just in the body of the Son, who came 'from above', but also in the bodies of those who are 'from below', including the saints. The subjection of earthly reality to heaven, of the unglorified to the glorified, of the corrupt to the incorrupt has already begun - and in some cases it is complete! We can name at least one person for whom the resurrected body is presently, 'even now', her body: Mary.
The difference here is that the Protestant views the whole issue as only a promise. Paul's 'we will be raised a spiritual body', 'raised in glory', seems to lie beyond all creaturely reality, in a still unreal future. For the Catholic, the dogma of the Assumption simply sheds light on a state of salvation that is already in existence. It is attributed to Mary in its entirety and fullness because, thanks to her faith, salvation was born unto her and has had its most perfect effect in her.
As wholly creature, Mary was at the center of the Incarnation, as she was at the center of the reception of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. It only makes sense that she would assume a central place in the complete, heavenly-bodily redemption, which is vouchsafed for all who believe.
(Based on Karl Rahner's article on the topic)

    Hello Bishop Robert Barron,
I have a question regarding a civil marriage. The persons involved are now physically seperated. They do not live together. One is Catholic and the other is not. They have one child. I read somewhere that the Catholic Church does not view civil marriages as valid. Must the civil divorce be official first? Would the Catholic person in question be allowed to recieve communion after going to confession (They do not have another spouse since then). What could the person do? Should they be encouraged to speak to the Parrish Priest?

I just wanted to add that since all the dreadful stuff about our perverted, perfidious priests and bishops have come out, I've been exploring orthodox churches, I think because I am wanting an 'out' to being Roman Catholic sometimes. However, I just learned that the orthodox don't believe in the Immaculate Conception. Bishop Barron's reiteration of the teaching and the reason behind it made me happy to be Roman Catholic, at least in that regard. To me, the orthodox reasoning is a little incomplete but the RC teaching seems to me logical and beautifully honoring to Mary. So thanks for that!

I could be wrong, but my understanding of the eastern orthodox churches is that they've always upheld the Immaculate Conception. The larger issue is of their rejection of the Papacy. Jesus created only one Church, Holy and Apostolic, and granted His authority to Peter, despite his failings. There's (thankfully) no legitimate way around that.

    • @faithbooks7906
      @faithbooks7906 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I am no expert but I sometimes listen to Sister Vassa's youtube videos on Saturday mornings and she was trying to explain how orthodox theology (she's Russian Orthodox) have a different understanding of original sin which doesn't quite jive with the RC understanding that underpins our concept of the Immaculate Conception. However, while listening to her my puppy kept barking and I was trying to clean my kitchen so I can't say I was listening as well as I could have been! I might have missed something. I do know that I find the Roman Catholic explanation more satisfying and that gave me a little comfort because even though I go to Mass and try to be a faithful Catholic, I am very alienated as well right now which made exploring orthodoxy attractive to me. So score 1 for RC and 0 for Orthodoxy on this particular issue! LOL.

@@faithbooks7906 Faith, if you don't have a Catechism of the Catholic Church I suggest you get one because it's beautifully written and you can pick it up at your convenience. Many people attack what they think we believe. There are many poorly catechized individuals out there and they're very vocal. Loud doesn't necessarily mean right or truthful. We must avoid the mentality of Score 1 for this team vs the other team, because that's a little rooted in pride. We want to get to heaven and spend eternity with Jesus. That's all that should matter and at the end of our lives we will be judged on how well we loved one another and whether or not we helped spread the gospel message which is every Christian's responsibility.

Are these three doctrines logically deduced by Catholic theologians or is there a direct scriptural exegesis that wasn't described? Exactly. God created science and the universe. Created what we learn about and still haven't scratched the surface on. He can make anything reality with or without our knowledgeof it. We think we are some authority because we know a few things. We should be thankful that he allows us to know them. It is through science also that he reveals himself as well. In summary: it is true that like scientists can have an over focus on scientific thought over philosophy at the same time us Christians too can fall into becoming over focused on the spiritual and philosophical over the practical in helping to serve the Marian church community 7 days a week while we then in secret come Sunday morning soon after waking up again are starting to experience not feeling like going to mass at all that day? No I don't believe that it is only us women or only us men who experience that sort of thing during our commitment to remain open to god making us more into an image of god. However I don't blame anyone for wanting to reject that way of describing how to remain open to god's anointing grace whenever speaking to other scientists. I liked studying science in school a lot. It did inspire me to be adventurous in life only to a point. What boundary that point was supposed to be resting on whenever it came to hearing the adventurous musings of another budding young scientist too once was another story altogether.

So I would imagine that at the time of the marriage of Mary and Joseph that It can be assumed that St. Joseph did not issue a complaint against Mary.
Of course we are told prior of the dream Joseph had about Mary as well. So at no time did Joseph complain against Mary to call to question the proof of her virginity.
He was a KIND man not wishing to harm her EVEN IF she had been unfaithful to their covenant with another man... having his child
To explain, Bethrothal was more than just a general engagement. The Israelite Woman was treated as a Bride with love and care even before marriage- even before the man touches her she is considered precious and granted honors as a wife! How lovely! 😊

I once was thaught by my religion teacher that there were four stages to faith:
    1. literalist belief of scripture
    2. atheism that believes scripture is meant literally
    3. atheism that believes scripture is meant symbolically
    4. belief of scripture in a symbolic way
But this is incomplete. The fifth - true - stage of faith is to actually believe in the impossible, in the miracles performed by our Lord, such as healing the sick, turning water into wine, the ressurection, walking on water, the immaculate and virgin conception... The final stage of faith is to have faith and to dare believe that the word of God can make the impossible possible.
Is all of scripture to be taken literally? No, but the gospels aren't a metaphor and cannot be reduced to such.

Question: So August 16 2014 at night/morning i almost died because i suffered from a Severe-TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) and was induced in a comma for like 30+ days (i'll ask my rehab doctor, after this covid-19 pandemic is over and i set up an appointment). Anyways: I also suffered from a femur, pelvis and ocular fracture and if i remember correctly. I was dating a Lutheran girl and i loved her so much at that time BUT if i remember correctly, i broke up with my ex girlfriend because of some really important silly reasons. The reasons were:
    (1) She was not Catholic, she is a Lutheran.
    (2) When i was in my rehab center in 2014 and later on i left the rehab center and became an outpatient of 2015, she pretty much asked me that if i remember breaking up with her because she wasn't Catholic and because she didn't like to workout
    (3) i also think this was a stupid reason BUT i also remember breaking up with her because she wasn't a virgin. Neither was i BUT this is a long story, but short story is: I had protected sex with 4 different girls BUT i didn't feel anything because of my uncircumcised penis. Then in 2013 and 2014 i had my first girlfriend ever and in college, i guess i had sex with her. Anyways, she got mad i didn't remember she had told me that she was going to get her extra toe cut off after graduating from MSU.
    (4) because she had an extra toe (this might be a silly dumb reason BUT later i found out that my great grandmother had a child whom had an extra finger), who eventually died. I didn't want my children to have an extra finger in his or her body OR my grandchildren.
    (5) i think i also broke up with her because she had anxiety like my little sister, whom also has anxiety. In 2013-2014 my little sister who is suffering with; depression, anxiety and BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder) tried to commit suicide by taking a bunch of pills. I just didn't want my children OR grandchildren to have a higher percent chance of being born with either of those diseases.
    (6) i'm pretty sure she doesn't believe in God because, if i remember correctly after she told me that i broke up with her because she wasn't catholic. I told her that, that didn't matter because "you at lest believe in God right.?"
    (7) i didn't get a response from her on messenger/Facebook. i just simply got blocked from her account
    (8) that obviously meant she didn't believe in God the Father, the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit! 😓😭🤬😭😓
i'm currently in the process of my Severe-TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury recovery. I know it's a loooooooonng process but with the help of our Lord Jesus Christ, i'll get through this little break. Sorry about the delay but My question is: Is it okay if a catholic man marries a non catholic girl? & Pray to the Holy Spirit for the conversion of my girlfriend/best friend/wife to our Catholic Religion?

Where in the Bible can I find that Jesus did or didn’t have brothers and sisters?

I can only imagine how Jesus spoils those people who honor, moreover devote themselves to His mother.

If Mary had slept with a man or “known man” as she says then someone would have known!! It would have been OK with God for the lovely Mary to be a HAPPILY EVER MARRIED PRINCESS 👑 EXCEPT THAT HE HAD AN EXTRAORDINARY MISSION FOR HER 😊
If God asked you Dear Sister, to say yes to his mission of living with a sweet man who cared for you incredibly as his wife and you would become a truly honored woman throughout history.... and you would be SATISFIED even though no intimacy I think at least you would think about it. God has a mission for each of us I think - a great love he wishes to share with us. I am still learning and need to learn so much more. I hope someone can help me, some other women. #Sisters #Princess #TrueLove

Could it be said that “Fallen” as in fallen angel, means that its intended purpose to give glory to God was abandoned in favor of giving glory to itself? Fallen Angels, yes - and their leader satan. Fallen Humans, yes - who is their leadership - perhaps whomever they elect or surrender to, but influenced by the fallen angels. This term “Fallen” should be understood as meaning “mis-directed”, and maybe not as “higher” or “lower” level of existence. All existence should bring God glory. Anthropomorphic semantics - mostly human speculation in our attempt to understand God. What does God really think and intend? What brings God glory?

Following up. Does God “need” for anything? Even from us? Even if we are His creation, does he “need” His creation in some way? In comments, it has been pointed out that we should seek to embody the tenet of “love”, to attempt to love what He has created as much as He does, and to bring to Him our highest level of admiration. The love of a Father for his children was a metaphor used continually by Jesus, and Jesus encouraged that strong reciprocation of love for the children back to the Father God. Yes, and to do that you should know His character of love for you. We do not see God with our human eyes, which only captures photons in a certain vibrational range, and thus to “know” all that He is not possible with only our human existence. We can see some of the complexity of His creation in nature and the physical visible universe. But to “know” Him fully is impossible in our limited physical existence. At least we “know” of this one characteristic of God - that He is loving and expects the same from us (Jesus’s message), to bring Him glory.
Praying “in His name” doesn’t just mean using the name “Jesus”, or “Yeshua”, or “iaseus christos”, mere human names, like this is some magical key that unlocks your blessings and wishes. “In my name” means “In my identity”, meaning you must assume the same characteristics of personality and authority found in Jesus - ask in love, and knowing that He has authority over everything, to control outcomes. If your will matches His, the more likely your desired outcome.
As much as Mary could be venerated for her obedience and dedication, I think it is a mistake to call her the “Mother of God”. This implies that she preceded the Omnipresent, always existent being God, at least to the commoner / unschooled theologically. “It would be more accurate to call her “Mother of God’s Son”. Yes, I understand that Jesus was “technically God”, but this should be understood as a “portion” of God’s Spirit Being. The portion was of course characteristically God, just as a glass of milk is still characteristically the same milk that came from the larger pitcher of milk, if you can even quantify the source of Jesus’s soul this way. The fallacy comes from this logic: if A (God) = B (Jesus was the total quantity of God in flesh), and C (Mary gave birth to Jesus), then A = C (Mary is the mother of God): if A = B, and B = C, then A = C, so to speak. This is too simple a logical assertion, based on the misunderstanding that Jesus contained everything that God is quantitatively. Jesus was fullness of God “qualitatively” - milk from the pitcher. Our understanding, or construct of “Trinity” is too limited and anthropomorphic.

Dear Bishop, I came upon your channel recently and was very happy to hear more voices speakng up for traditional values and against cultural rot. One phenomenon that has become so prevalent but not identified as such, how radical feminism invaded the church about the same time acceptance and even promotion of deviant sexuality. These are women who are not content to know their place and "let it be done unto me" but want the same roles as men. Quite a few pantsuited nuns fall into this category. I really cringe when seeing women priests now in the Episcopal church actually conducting a communion rite which must not only be totally invalid but also intrinsically bad. But I suspect it is more than that. I see them as disguised New Age witches whether they are aware of it or not. I wonder if you have spoken about this subject or can direct me to material that treats of it.

zamyrabyrd I agree that women are feeling lost these days
In many ways we do not know how to proceed in this age because “how can we know unless someone explains it to us”
Also... I have theories about the suppression of certain aspects of womanhood and contributing to LGBTQI lifestyle.
People are lost a bit as we have been educated in certain schools with certain programs... the world in many ways while seeming to some might seem to liberate us or grant “equality” actually leave me and my sisters out in the cold.
I love being a female. But at times “there is no room for us at the inn”
You have pornography saying “you are good for only one thing women!” Yet the one thing of pornography depicts us as acrobatic geniuses and actresses and at times bizzare comedians... Spinners of fantasies to entertain customers.
Satan has spoiled our holiness. Then men say yeah you are good for sex only now get the work... don’t be lazy... don’t have children they are a burden!
If you have ever read of the pagan “goddess” Lilith she is practically the antithesis of the Virgin Mary the Mother of God. 😢
My point is I see so many honorable fellas now yet in my generation are quite a few that perpetuate the philosophy of Lilith the Babylonian goddess. It makes young girls especially confused! And girls grow into women. Guidance we need it. #ApostalateofBeauty #Kabbalah #Lilith
