    The NCR and Great Khans' origins being in the same vault is insane, putting Bitter Springs - and the Courier's efforts to negotiate that the Khans fight against the Legion - into a whole new light

    My best friend, Justin, was a HUGE fan of the fallout series. It was his absolute favorite He died in 2014 before Fallout 4 came out. Since then, I've always wanted to attempt to get a memorial to him in a Bethesda game, but have never really attempted to do it until now.
    Oxhorn has amazing fans. I would like to ask you guys to help me reach Bethesda so that my friend can be memorialized in his favorite series forever.
    I know you guys will help me. Maybe even the big man himself :).
    I even have a petition started that has almost 750 signatures after just one day. It blows me away how supportive the fallout community is.
    Thank you

    Remember to exercise caution with the Fallout Bribe, while Bethesda and Obsidian used parts of it, itself isn't canon. a bit like Van buren in that regards.

    • @oxhorn
      @oxhorn  6 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      It is semi-cannon. Some of it is canon and was even incorporated into the games. Some of it is not canon. I tend to go with the idea that it is canon unless it conflicts with published lore. The history of Vault 15 does not conflict with any lore published in the games, so there is no reason to believe it is not canon.

    • @nonamegiven202
      @nonamegiven202 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      parts of it and Van Buran were and are used like i said but only it's those parts as they were used in game are canon, the reason is to treat it as such is to avoid "factoids" based on information that was then is charged, used for something else, or just simple never happen.
      For example Vault 13, an control vault in fallout 2, made into a experimental vault who was suppose to be isolated for 200 years in the bible, then that experiment's end date was changed and it became Vault 101.

      no name given True but I prefer to go with the broble more often then not. Bethesda’s retcon of a lot of things after they got the rights to the series does not sit right with me. Much like oxhorn. Unless it conflicts with somthing that is currently considered cannon then I’m going to roll with it. Most people aren’t immersed enough into the lore for somthing like this to matter and those that are know pretty well what can and can’t be considered cannon from the various sources available.

    My ONE complaint with Fallout 2 is that it forces one very specific set of outcomes from Fallout 1 as canon.
    The Original Khans are wiped out, Tandi survives and is inspired by the encounter to form the NCR and annex most of the nearby city states, the Necropolis is wiped out by mutants, the mutants are wiped out before they can destroy anyone EXCEPT them, and Gizmo fails in his power struggle. That's it.
    If the first two games were to be remade(as well as fixing some of the broken quests and mechanics in Fallout 1), I'd love Fallout 2 to potentially become a completely different game if you make different choices in the first game. (Which if they kept the same late 90s art style could be doable)
    Like, maybe Tandi dies and her father maintains Shady Shores as an isolated town. Or maybe your power character talks her into running off on an adventure as she was initially inclined. Maybe you and Ian butcher them all and leave the town to rot. Maybe you cut a deal with Ian to put him in charge after killing those two and in exchange you get the loot.
    Maybe the Khans are left alone and become a major faction player in the wasteland and Fallout 2 is about them competing with whoever unites elsewhere. Maybe the player joins them and conquer the entire northern wasteland? Maybe you asurp Garl by pretending to be his dead dad or beating him in the ring of combat? Maybe you cut a deal with them to leave your pet town alone and they proceed to target elsewhere?
    Maybe the Necropolis...survives, a ghoul utopia, instead of being the ONLY place in the game where the mutant army canonically reaches for some reason? Or maybe you just let them die of thirst same dif as before really.
    Maybe without Tandi in the picture Junktowm unifies the city states? But under Killian or Gizmo? Or perhaps if you leave them both in a brutal power struggle The Hub rises to prominence? Or maybe all of them remain free city states?
    Maybe the Mutants are stopped slightly later and more of the southern wasteland is wiped out? Maybe they're stopped somewhat last minute and Fallout 2 features you clawing back control of the southern regions from Mutant remnants who stuck around after their leader died? Maybe you joined them and Fallout 2 involves you fighting them as the main enemy as they try to cure their sterility problem before it's too late?
    Maybe you and your gaggle of allies (Ian and Gycho and Dogmeat oh my) survive to the end, kill the Overseer, and take over Vault 13 by force? Maybe you lead them outside to form your own city state? Or if you wiped out Sandy Shores earilier you take over that empty city?
    THINK of the possibiltiys!

    Oxhorn, the word "schism" comes from the Greek "σχίσμα" /skeesma/, but because in German the letters "sch" are pronounced like the English "sh" people started to think that "schism" is pronounced like "shizm", which is honestly incorrect.

    • @oxhorn
      @oxhorn  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      According to The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, the word originally never had the "ch", and was pronounced "sizm". The word's spelling was changed to include the "ch", and from that point onward, some pronounced it "skizm". "skizm" has long been regarded as the incorrect way to say it, but has become so common, that it is now acceptable. The word is pronounced three ways today, in order of popularity: "skizm", "sizm", and "shizm". All three are correct. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schism#cite_note-1

      Alright, fair enough. I just look at things from a purely etymological standpoint as opposed to a practical and sociolinguistic standpoint like you did. But I only ever meant to blame this pronunciation standard for existing and not blame you for being generally incorrect.

      Yan Alkovic
      I don't understand why people bother arguing when they don't know what they are talking about. Oxhorn is right. The word entered the Middle English vocabulary from Old French. There is no direct connection in terms of pronunciation to Greek or German. The Old French spelling is "scisme" and the English pronounced it as "siz-em". It was in the late 18th century that people began to propose that the pronunciation should change in order to stay true to the Latin and Greek roots of the word (this along with other words that have a "ch"). And it was only in the 1960's that this alternative pronunciation was officially accepted by linguists in the US. It was considered a colloquialism and an error until then.

      @Yan_Alkovic 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Woolly Eel Wow, thanks, dude, I didn’t know that! I’m honestly just a bit lazy to do that much research. I just knew the Greek word so I immediately set out to write the comment based on just that and my assumption on the origin of the mispronunciation. But although the word didn’t come directly from German it still appears fairly likely that it was due to the influence of that orthographic convention and the introduction of German names with the trigraph “sch” to America. Or is there another explanation for that?
      Then again, why isn’t there a similar variability in words like “schizophrenia” even though it comes from the same root?

Sorry Ox, but I think you're off on this one. However, I did find an intersting article on the etymology, and correct way of saying, pronunciation/pronounciation. So maybe language is flexible and we should all try not to step on too many toes. Super happy to see you getting into Fallout 1, it was the first video game I bought on my own. Because the word from which 'schism' is derived is Latin & Greek, the 'ch' is appropriately pronounced as a 'k' sound. Ox's pronunciation is a hold over from pre-16th century when the spelling was based off the Old French. There are alternate acceptable pronunciations, but there is an entomological reason that and historical support for one of them being correct.

    • @eclipsegst9419
      @eclipsegst9419 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      my only question is if its supposed to be pronounced skisim, then why did whoever translated it use spelling that would indicate it was pronounced shisim? ch is almost always pronounced phonetically at the end of a word, or sh if not at the end of a word. i mean its possible, there are plenty of other screwy words like that, but most are foreign words that we just adopted as other Europeans immigrated and became part of our culture.

God is the devil and they must be the same to balance the life here. I don’t believe in rules I think morally you can save yourself from pain

    • @baker90338
      @baker90338 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fenno Graas the thing I find with religions is that although they may seem primitive and outdated, every myth has a seed of truth to be found. An example is how the Jews and Muslims in their banning of certain meats (in both, the pig) their is a reason to it, in that of they tends to have high fat and low protein. Christianity was a reformation of Judaism, and helps by giving a set of successful rules for life, thereby giving a more successful community. This moral base is (in my opinion) what allowed the West to develop at a much faster pace. “Render under Caesar” would be a example, with the separation of church and state money, and “you shall not bear false witness” is another example, in that one should put the law before religion in a judicial case.

    • @fennograas
      @fennograas 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes about the meat its actually good I wonder if they did it for the reason you gave but it alowed Jewish people to live longer and healthy (of course other religions thought it was for another reason) but sticking with traditions isn't always a good thing for a civilized society to move forward of course they did live longer but these days thanks to the progress we make we live longer and better which just isn't possible when you stick with tradition and religion
