Love how they use the Akita inu or shiba inu in their marketing for this food. These pups generally have lots of intolerances/allergies.

I'm so glad you reviewed this! My dog is just finishing his first bag and eats it as soon as I put it in his bowl. This video makes me feel more confident about switching to this. Banjo gets a mixture of colitis/red eyes/itchiness with the more common proteins. When I tried several novel proteins, he was better, but my veterinarian was never too happy with the brands. So when this came out I thought, perfect!

$60 for a 12 pound bag is pretty steep for me. Hopefully my puppy won’t need this specific diet in the future. He does seem to get pretty itchy. I currently have him on science diet puppy lamb formula and he is doing well. The itching has mostly happened when he’s introduced to a new “treat” or figures out how to raid the trash bin..😅

Was looking for a Hill's formula for SENIOR dogs, that did not include beef, chicken, or lamb. Does Hill's make such a product? Thank you.

Hello Glenn, interesting new food indeed, but I need your help on the best food I should give my pup since you are the Hill's expert here! So, I have been feeding my dog the SD Adult Perfect Digestion, Salmon, Old Oats and Brown Rice Recipe: Protein 25 % Calcium 0.88 % Phos 0.73 %. However, he has now turned 7 years old and I was considering switching him to the SD Adult 7+ Perfect Digestion Chicken, Whole Oats & Brown Rice Recipe: Protein 21 % Calcium 0.92 % Phos 0.65 %. As you can see, the Calcium level is higher on the 7+ diet at .92% compared to the Adult diet at 0.88%. All the other nutrients are lower on the 7+ diet except for the Calcium. I am very puzzled as to know which one my 7 year-old Cocker Spaniel should be on now. As I was browsing the Hill's website, I saw that quite a few of their mature/senior foods have higher calcium levels than the Adult formulas. So, what would you kindly suggest that I do??? Thank you so much for your time and all the knowledge you share with us. 😻🐕

All those mineral levels are fine for a 7 year old. levels differ sometimes based on the ingredients. but again, all nice and renal friendly. I'd base it mostly on calories now and match that up to the right diet. I hope that helps ! Relax! either way is fine.

@PetFoodPuzzleGuy cool😆. Yes jimminys started with kibble and treats and have since added more treat varieties and wet food in those "earth friendly "laminated cardboard box looking containers" BTW I hate wet food in those it's annoying to open the containers. Idk why but yes I do occasionally buy stuff in those containers but I do not like those! 🙃 🤣. I buy so many types and brands over years. If it's something new or looks interesting I usually let the dogs sample it. 😅

With bigger dogs living less years I would be prone to going with lower mineral and protein levels just in case they are prone to any issues like kidneys. this seems like a great diet but Hills has many kidney friendly diets if you're not ready for bugs.

Are you a fan of the science diet perfect weight formulas. I started my dog on the large breed perfect weight and joint. About a month in I’m noticing dry skin and dandruff dull and drier coat. Never had issues on royal canin or regular large breed adult SD. All healthy dog, seems like it could be the food. Maybe not enough fat or some other nutrient for him?

I am a fan of the Perfect Weight diet. I actually just ordered a bag of the Perfect Weight/Joint Support for my two girls. I guess we'll see if I have the same issues. Usually higher omega 3's wouldn't cause dry skin.

I don’t mind bug foods, but I wouldn’t feed them long term as the sole food or if it’s just insect and no other meat sources, truth be told there’s just not enough research yet in the long term for this, even Pet Food Industry made some worrying notes about long term use. We need more dogs eating it as the sole diet and more years to see if it’s well balanced or not and if any problems arise from using it as the sole diet.
On the other side of this convo featuring me, I’d never eat insects myself, for my dog in pellet form it’s fine, but for me even knowing it’s in a food of mine would have me gagging and vomiting. I also have severe allergies to some certain things nowadays due to histamine intolerance and mast cell issues so untested bug foods? No thanks. We likely have no idea how any meat substitute works on people with mast cell problems. Not to mention to make them taste good they need ingredients I can’t have anymore.

I’m feeding my dog a food tht has 22% protein 12% fat 6.5% fibre (kind of high) and 367kcal/cup. She needs to lose a few pounds so I’m hoping this blend will help with that. It is listed as ‘all stages’ and I understand that that’s a puppy food? But the ‘adult maintenance’ version has 24% protein 14% fat and 414 kcal/cup…. (Both have 1% calcium and 0.8% phosphorous.
I’m thinking to stick to the lower cal recipe?
What is your take on that. Hope I can get her body condition improved. 🎉

    • @PetFoodPuzzleGuy
      @PetFoodPuzzleGuy  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yes, they are declaring to you its a puppy food. If your dog is younger its not as critical. In my years of experience the best food to take weight off a dog is Science Diet Perfect Weight. It activates their metabolism so they start burning fat instead of storing it.

      @@PetFoodPuzzleGuy Thanks for the reply!
      She’s no longer a puppy; she’s 4 years old.
That’s why I was surprised that the ‘all stages’ was lower in calorie compared to the adult version. In the mean time I’ll stick the the ‘all stages/ albeit lower protein/fat/calorie after that I’ll look into Hills Perfect Digestion.
My girl is already 4 years old; got her in the summer; and she put on weight since I got her. Neutered and I probably over fed her during the fall, since I really didn’t know better. Plus I was too interested in ‘fancy’ brands . My finances have changed since then as well as realizing my girl got fat over the winter- hence my concern.

And at what point would I need to switch to a senior vs stay on Perfect Weight?
      Thanks so much!
My girl is going to return to a healthy condition . Fortuneately she’s not OBESE, however overweight is still overweight. :).

    • @ZaryaTheLaika

Humans can digest nixtamalized corn fine. Indigenous peoples were taller and more populous than their European counterparts. Just because white southerners and Italians gave themselves pellagra because they didn't know you have to add lime and ash doesn't means you can't eat corn.
