    I've never read a book so fast! th-cam.com/users/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU Learning about his dogs and experiences was just the icing on the cake - bed this book through and through. We're working with our new pup and Brandon's advise was just what I needed. Wish he'd just come and train for me haha but it's good for us and happy to have this new set of tools to use on our pup.

    I tried Orijen, Farmina N&D, and Acana… my dog had soft stools with all of them. I went back to Taste of the Wild every time and her stools are solid. She’s a happy healthy 3 years old German shepherd.

      With better natural foods like raw diets also, soft stools are common for some time until their stomachs digest it better as it’s first time they eat something .. healthy ! My guess is money for you, or should have simply researched basic dog care to know about soft stools with new foods… you are an abuser if you can’t afford the best smh ! Like don’t adopt any animal if you fail the basic task of providing f a quality food !

    Feed a previous dog purina branded dog foods and she lived a happy healthy long life for a medium size mix . Her life expectancy for the breed mix was 12 years and she lived to be 18 years. I don’t think it’s always about the food when it comes to a dogs health and not everyone can afford to feed the more premium brands.

      You are absolutely right, and I share this video not to shame anyone or bash a brand, rather, to inform on how i make my personal choices. From there, my community can decide how to best feed their pet. My goal is to inform, not recommend. I am so happy your dog lived to 18! Two of the oldest living dogs lived to nearly 30 years old, and I am on my way to help as many dogs live to 30 (and beyond) as possible! And you are right, food is absolutely not everything. Genetics, environment, all play a role!

      I feed my cats purina brand kitten( the natural one and for m6 full grown cat I buy purina grain free with chicken and egg. Also I stop by petco to buy clearance on grain free canned kitten food. The three cats just share everything and they are so healthy. As for m6 dogs I buy high end brands like blue and farmers dog at the grocery outlet. For example I get the brand blue dog food that normally cost over 50$ for 38 pounds and I get it for under $30..38 pounds 😊

    Just watched your video and although it was informative it was somewhat disappointing to watch. You come off somewhat condescending. Most people can’t afford 47 dollars for two pounds of food much less 180 to 200 for a 22 pound bag. I understand you probably get sponsored by some of these companies so you push them. We do our absolute best for our two perrihijos(dog children). We give them numerous supplements and plenty of fresh vegetables and fish. To say these boys are well taken care of is an understatement.

    • @am-xk3xs
      @am-xk3xs ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Information is important. Don't attack the messenger. Whether or not she gets kickbacks from these companies is irrelevant. Look at the ingredients and see what makes sense to you. The garbage she is indicating is in the standard brands is the fault of the brand not the messenger. It is so you can make better informed decisions and this is very similar to the human nutrition world. Perhaps you can use the higher quality food as a topper or alternate food days. Adding in some healthier foods and reducing some unhealthier foods without making a complete switch to the most expensive would seem to me like a step in the right direction.

  • @odogg41

    • @thomasbassett5475
      @thomasbassett5475 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Have you ever considered the idea that owning a dog is expensive? It's kind of like having a child. You can choose to just have a child and there is nobody that will try to stop you. If you don't earn enough money to be able to give your child the best of everything then that child will for sure be limited and excluded from living a better life than you were able to provide them. But that doesn't stop people from choosing to have a child. I find it hard to understand why so many parents out there think that they have the right to complain about not being able to afford to give their children the best of everything when they never earned enough money before they decided to have that child. They just don't have the right to complain about it. So when a person decides to have a child anyway, without the means of being able to take care of that child, that person is acting irresponsibly and everyone in that family will suffer for them making that choice. The same thing goes for dogs. If you can't afford to put in the time and be able to afford the hefty cost of owning that dog, then you should not own a dog because you will only be hurting that dog in the long run. Everyone loves their pets and wants to give them the best there is to offer. But owning a dog is not cheap. It's actually very expensive and there is no way around it. It's entirely up to you on whether or not you are going to be able to give your pet the best care possible just like it would be if you decided to have a child and if you can't afford to buy quality food and spend lots of time with them to see to it that they are getting the best, then you should not put yourself in a position of having to do that. You should have taken the time to consider all the costs of owning a dog before you got one and you didn't. Everyone has the right to own a dog or have a child but nobody has the right to dictate the costs involved in that decision. That is something you should have researched better before taking on that responsibility because that is something every responsible person would do before taking on such an incredibly important decision and you obviously didn't. So you don't have the right to complain about the costs involved because those costs were probably too high for you to be able to afford before you decided to take on the responsibility of owning a dog with prices only going to get higher in the future. So it's too late to whine about it. You made that decision now it's up to you to find a way to earn the money needed to do it. Or you can just keep on complaining about the costs as you and your pet suffer for your bad decision because complaining about it now will not help change your situation. Only one thing will change it and that's for you to find a way to earn more money. If you can't do that then you should not have chosen to own a dog in the first place because owning a dog has always been something expensive and you should have known that before taking on that responsibility. So you have nobody to blame but yourself for taking on a responsibility that you clearly were never able to afford in the first place. I would hope that you learned from your mistake but you probably didn't learn anything at all and will keep making decisions that you can't afford to have and will still be complaining about the costs as if it's your right to dictate what the costs should be for you. You have no rights on what those costs will be at all because that's how capitalism works. People have the right to charge the highest amount of money they want for their products. It's up to you to be able to afford them and if you can't then you don't get to buy their products or services from them. If you don't like their prices then you need to go make a better product yourself for the prices you can afford. You have that right. So good luck with that. Something tells me though that you will not even come close to making a better product for less money. After all, you are the one who is complaining here so I'm assuming you already know that you can make that product. That's what a responsible person would do. Because you have to be able to back up your complaint. Why would you complain about today's current prices unless you already knew that you could put out an equivalent or better product for less money? Because it's not fair to expect other companies to do that for you when you can't do that yourself. So it wouldn't be fair to expect those companies to offer their products for less money since you couldn't do that either. Why would you ever complain about those companies' prices when you are not able to put out an equivalent product for less money? That would be an incredibly stupid thing to expect from those companies which makes your complaint not valid at all. We all want to be able to afford everything that we want but we don't live in a perfect world. We live in a capitalist society which is far from perfect and if we don't like that then we need to change it. So now you have two goals to take on. Good luck changing anything in this corrupted society. The only way we change that is when more than 60% of the people are willing to unite to fight back against it. And nobody in this country gives a shit about anyone else to do that. So if you are not already a winner here then you are a loser and you will have to just wait till the winners drop the ball and destroy it themselves. Till then you just take care of yourself the best you can and wait for it to collapse. Because complaining about it will only make you look like a bigger loser than you probably are and the rich will come for you like a bunch of sharks looking for an easy meal. These are all facts like them or not. You can continue to live your life in denial of them but I feel knowledge is power which is why I'm telling you this. I'm not happy with the way things are in this country but I don't get to make the rules and I learned a long time ago that complaining about them hurts you more than trying to play by the system they created. Change will come but it won't happen overnight and you still have to live here till that change comes which can take decades or maybe centuries to happen. So it's up to you whether or not you are going to live a good life here in the meantime. So empower yourself with as much knowledge as you can and make the best of the little bit of time you have here on this earth because you only get to do it once. Do it wrong and you have nobody to blame but yourself. The system is completely rigged against you so your odds are not good that you will do well. It will take lots of knowledge and a lot of luck for you to do well. And complainers who don't have valid complaints usually live their lives struggling badly and for the most part, are not happy at all.Doers on the other hand have much better odds of finding happiness while they are here. It's no guarantee but there is no guarantee of anything in this life other than you will die someday and that's it. Every decision we make can have long-lasting effects for the rest of our lives. It's never enough to just follow the crowd and then expect for everyone to live happily. Some might and some might not. So you need to think about the decisions you make a little bit harder so that you can think them through before you make those decisions. Because most people don't do that and you will find yourself in a much better place in life if you take the time to do that. Because complaining about things that you have no power to change never helps and makes you even a bigger loser.

    Hi Rachel, love your videos! Just speaking from my personal experience, we tried feeding Carna4 to our small dog, and no matter what we did (we transitioned her very slowly), she would always throw it up. So instead, we have started feeding her The Honest Kitchen Whole Grain Chicken Clusters for Small Breeds, and she has done very well on it (no throwing up, thank goodness). It is 100% human grade, cold pressed, roasted & gently dehydrated (so I feel good about giving it to her). Also, we give her a side of raw goats milk (which she loves), and we will occasionally add fresh food toppers (such as sardines, etc.). It is working well for us so far!

    The reason why Purina splits the corn is because corn gluten meal and whole grain corn are two different ingredients that serve two different purposes. Corn gluten meal is the protein extracted from corn and consists of around 70% protein. Whole grain corn is just corn which has a much lower protein value and is mostly a carbohydrate. Corn gluten meal is a very good protein source and since the nutritional value of corn gluten meal is completely different from whole grain corn, it’s listed separately on an ingredient label. Don’t confuse corn gluten meal with regular corn because they are literally two completely different ingredients

      corn is NOT a "food" dogs should be eating. NO wolf would be eating corn, and most corn is GMO now, so that is NOT even fit for human consumption. It is filler, why would you feed filler? Purina is trash, and spends more on marketing the trash than what they put in their products. Just my opinion, keep your Vet rich, and your dog compromised is not logical.

    My pup is EXTREMELY allergic to oatmeal so Taste of Wild Ancient Grains Lamb is one of the few that doesn't send us to the vet for allergy shots. His ears, skin and coat have cleared up. I do use apple, carrots and meat as training aids because oatmeal is often the second or third ingredient in most.
    Allergy testing was expensive but well worth it.

    I love your videos. Could you do a video on foods that you can purchase at pet stores like PetSmart, Petco, chewy that would be acceptable to feed? Personally I'd like to know your thoughts about Acana and Evangers. Both the wet and dry foods. I recently adopted a Corgi Chihuahua mix that was part of a humane case. She was severely under weight, full of parasites, hardly any fur. I'm slowly getting weight on her. She was just used for breeding also and had little human contact, so I'm working with her taking it slow. I've tried a few foods to see what she will eat. Right now she does like the Acana small breed with the wet for a topper or I put bone broth on her food. She loves apples also. I also make her homemade freeze dried liver treats. We use those for training.

I'm only on disability for my income so I'm on a tight budget. Evangers dry dog food on chewy is around $10 for a 4lb bag. Acana is a little bit more. Evangers wet dog food like lamb and rice, and beef and bacon has no fillers. It's around $26 a 12 pack. Pet supplies plus does sell single cans if you wanna try it. It's a pretty thick pate. They actually cook the food in the cans. I usually scoop a few spoonfuls out and add a little water and mix with dry dog food. I feed that to my corgi mix, and pit mix. Evangers also has a wet food that's for cats and dogs. My dogs and cats absolutely love it. It's a little bit more a can, but saves money getting one type of food all the furkids can have. I was shocked when the vet advised not to feed 'grain free' food, but Purina was just great. Not my first dog. 20 years ago, on the advice of a friend who bred Goldens, I switched from Purina Pro to Wellness, and health improved dramatically. I switched the cat's food to Wellness from Purina, and she stopped throwing up for the first time ever. I see your point about Wellness, tho. I had been feeding my last dog the Wellness Raw Rev, which was freeze dried, and I thought it was all meat. I see now it's not and has various legumes. Will take your advice and switch to one of your recommendations.

    This is a fantastic video, but one thing I'd question and point out is that "sweet and regular potatoes" must surely be split due to how different they are. My understanding is that regular potatoes are from the nightshade family while sweet potatoes are not. The two ARE related - both tuberous root vegetable families originating in the Americas - but only distantly.
    I should add that I’m genuinely interested in pet nutrition - having 3 cats and a dog - not wishing to spark a disagreement.
    I'd be very interested in hearing your thoughts on this, as I've been avoiding "potato" in my pets' now mainly wet food (am weaning them off kibble!) so as to veer away from carbs, but had assumed "sweet potato" to be a healthier and more acceptable ingredient. There's a school of thought that it's useful in providing a bit of fibre ... something I'd heard can help cats susceptible to hairballs (i.e. in helping to shepherd the loose hairs smoothly through the digestive tract as opposed to forming a 'hair sausage' that is yicked up from time to time).
    My interest in pet nutrition stems from my first dog, who I got as a pup back in 2002, developing allergies well before the age of 2 (red, itchy paws, recurrent ear infections and “hotspots”). I didn’t know ANYTHING about pet nutrition back then, and from Day One as a puppy-parent had trusted that the most expensive food on my vet’s waiting room shelves would be the best for my much-adored girl: Iams!!! Arggghhh! When her allergy issues arose, the vet practice - after first charging me for a whole battery of expensive tests, including a skin biopsy on one of her paws - suggested an exclusion diet as a last (should have been first, IMO!) resort. Bea did a ton better after excluding meat, wheat, soya and maize from her diet … with her main protein going forward being fish.
    I also stopped vaccinations when she was around 6 years old … but that’s a different story. The positive, though, is that - even as a large Lab mix of 33kg / 73 pounds - she got to a grand age of 15 ¼ and I’m certain she’d have lived even longer had she not developed GOLPP toward the end of her life; a larynx operation aged nearly 13 gave her 2 ½ extra years.
    Anyway, I got even more interested in nutrition on discovering that my first dog’s later well-liked food change to Burns Fish and Brown Rice kibble (again, “trusted” - being touted as being developed by a vet) had changed the rice content by increasing it to a whopping 61% and also reducing the fish to only 20% (with no decrease in price, naturally!). I’d just by chance read about this on a discussion page in a dog magazine … otherwise I’d have continued to be clueless. At this point Bea was on about 30% wet food … but only as a ‘carrier’ for her Plaque-Off powder supplement, to have something to be mixed with.
    My second dog is benefitting from my additional knowledge, gleaned from places such as your channel. I am in the UK, so sadly the majority of your recommendations are not available over here, but I’ve found that checking food nutrition scores on the All About Dog Food website (basically a huge, filterable, database of thousands of dog foods) has been immensely useful.
    While I can’t embrace raw-feeding, Jamie-girl has always been on a high-quality grain-free mostly wetfood diet and I’ve continued with fish as the main protein. As I said, I’m phasing out the kibble and won’t be buying any more after the current respective bags for her and the cats are used up. One of my cats, aged 4, recently had to have a bladder stone removal … so I found to my cost that even a half high quality kibble / half wet food cat feeding regime can cause problems (he is wet food only now and as an unexpected bonus his coat is amazing!). My dog also gets a great mix of fresh veggies and fruit added to her diet. She’s 5 now, and has NO allergies - yay! - and the only medical issue she’s ever had since I adopted her aged 5.5 months was a recent swollen and irritated right ear canal after ear-plucking at the groomer’s (i.e. unlikely to be food-related).
    Of course, anyone who becomes more aware of pet nutrition would have regrets about past mistakes - I do … especially the Iams! - but the pet food business is all about keeping those mistakes secret - and I LOVE how you are helping to bring the murky secrets to the light. More power to you!

    Thank you for your videos! I now want to transition from kibble! I’m having trouble figuring out what is the most budget friendly option. Would it be the freeze/air dried category?

    We have a 4mo GSD. Very sensitive stomach. We had her on Hills science but she had bad diarrhea so she’s now on a bland diet and is now having solid stools. What food would you recommend for a dog with a sensitive stomach. Even tried Victor and taste of wild. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
