Life Stage Pet Food or Not...It's Confusing!
When you see a food is formulated for ALL Life Stages it means it must be high enough in nutrients for growing animals, so it's excessive and not optimal levels for adult animals. But when you find a food that says formulated for Adult or adult maintenance, does that mean it's not excessive? Who decides which label the company uses? Let's find out!

    Excellent video. Something I never thought about. I was just looking again at Nutrisource and on the bag it says ADULT but on the AFFCO statement on the bag it says all life stages. Fromm does the same. Talk about confusing......... Dr. Em also makes a good point that a calcium of 1% or phosphorous of 1% is of a different value per kcals per cup - as each one is different and can’t be directly compared. A 300 kcals per cup is less dense than 450 kcals per cup. Bioavailability should also be taken into account. Something that is less bioavailable actually needs higher nutrient numbers to "push" thru those nutrients. That is why again the calcium to phosphorous ratio comes in handy in comparing relative values to each other. It's like comparing stocks for investment; a $400 stock can actually be cheaper than a $50 stock based on their P/E ratios. This is why ratios are important they compare and smooth out differences on a relative basis.

      Well, you can choose to not believe me but I was a Hills Vet rep for 34 years. It was my job to educate vets and their teams on therapeutic nutrition with Hills diets and use them in their clinics. If I could have given kick backs to vets for using our diets, I surely would have, anything to help more pets get the diets they needed. But that simply is not the case. If you find a vet telling you they got kickbacks I'd surely love to talk to them! Where was I for 34 years?

    • @GardeningGroomer
      @GardeningGroomer 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Define “Kickbacks”. I see this word thrown around ALL THE TIME and ZERO evidence to uphold that claim. If you count a clip board or pen as a kickback then yeah, wow, they’re really rolling in it, aren’t they? Why would a vet NOT recommend and keep available foods to sell to the clients which have been scientifically proven to help support whatever health condition? Why would they recommend some “boutique” food that merely follows “affco formulation guidelines” and is beautifully marketed with buzzwords and pretty sounding ingredients panels with zero feeding trials behind it? These same companies that employ maybe ONE veterinary nutritionist yet have a huge marketing budget? Which one would you rather feed, if your pet had a real problem? I’m going to guess you have had pets who have been mostly normal and not needed Rx food to help stabilize them. For one, I had an IBD dog who I REFUSED to feed Rx foods to (back when I believed these companies were evil garbage). It saved her life finally listening to my vet and putting her on Rx. Some time later, a friend convinced me to put my dogs all back on raw, it’s the best, they will live so much longer with no health issue, they said. You want to guess what happened? My best buddy of only 10 years got pancreatitis SO SEVERE that his numbers were OFF THE CHARTS BAD and he DIED because “raw is so good and big pet food companies are evil!” My little guy fought HARD for 2 weeks and succumbed to pancreatitis anyway. It is the most heartbreaking thing to have ever gone through and I feel like I caused it because I believed what my friend said. I will ALWAYS feed Hills or Purina or Royal Canin. The rest of the pet food companies are highly suspect. I will also ALWAYS take my vet’s food recommendation. I figure the 10 years of education vs. internet guru is the much smarter choice.

    Proper nutrition is so VERY important and especially for those requiring a certain level of nutrients. I’m dealing with a few issues now with my beagle girl and I have learned so much in the last week about nutrition. I did ponder weather a special cooked diet would benefit her but there’s just no way i would ever be able to get it right even with the help of a professional. (She had struvite crystals and now has calcium oxalate crystals and low phosphorus levels😩) The more I study and research her issues the more I realise the importance of nutrients and how it does greatly effect the health of your pet. I can only imagine what an unbalanced homecooked diet would do to a dog in the long term. It’s not worth the risk. I feel a lot of people feed homecooked so they can brag about the fancy ingredients.

That’s why vets are so loyal to crap dog food like Hills and Dog Chow. Look at the first ingredient on Dog Chow. Corn is the most crop that is sprayed with glyphosate. No thanks, I’ll stick with grain free.

    I am so glad I found you awhile back .We adopted a beagle/American bulldog mix. He is super picky. I tried the all natural home cooked meals. and all natural home delivery to healthy food from the pet stores. . My husband has had dogs but I always had cats so when I went to the store to buy dog food I could not believe all the varieties of food! I was at a loss to what to get him. My head was dizzy looking up the reviews of all different kinds of foods. I started cooking my own doing the semi raw etc. I knew straight away that grain free was bad for their hearts .my vet told me on our first welcome visit. He didn't seem to upset that I was giving him a home cooked meals. But my dog no matter what, will get sick of it and left food all the time . Also for the 1st few years had loose bowel movements. I tried everything to solve that problem. I found your TH-cam and everything made so much sense. I went out and bought Hills science diet Weight control (he has the Beagle girth lol) I was shocked . He loved the food ! I even tried their wet food of Chicken and barley and he ate it! He never ate any wet dog food I gave him. And the big thing is his #2's are finally just about normal after all this time! I am on my umpteenth bag and he still likes it. Oh and BTW last vet visit about a week into me starting Hills and getting him off human meat etc. the vet said his kidney was showing too much protein something we have to keep an eye out for. I told him we switched so we are giving it time and see what happens with that. Thanks again keep on plugging away .

    Imagine suing scientists for their discoveries which literally save pet's lives - meanwhile trying to claim these big companies are purposely harming pets. People forget Hills also had a grain free line - they'd be shooting themselves in the foot if this were at all true. 😮‍💨 So glad this case was dismissed, what a silly money-wasting lawsuit.

      My vet saved my sheltie from pancreatitis this last week. Low energy, panting not wanting to lay down, no energy to go up and down stairs, and the look of dread in her eyes. After taking meds I was instructed to feed a bland diet at an ER vet office. My vet at my vet a office asked if I wanted to use the Science low fat digestive health I/D instead. I said yes. My sheltie is back to normal. Feel so relieved. From now on senior food only not the performance formula with high fat.

      there is a lot of mistrust of vets since social media. Social media celebrities with no knowledge or credentials are trusted over board certified vet nutritionists and years (decades) of proven research. We live in strange times.

      @@edschulhof6303 we tend to develop opinions on certain fields or occupations based on our personal experiences. I have a mistrust of lawyers and sadly, cops, because of the experience with just a few. It's not logical to let that paint our view of all but it does happen. Because of so many vets I knew over the years, I start out trusting them, though I know not all are good. Now I start out distrusting cops, which, again, I know is stupid, but personal experience shard to overcome sometimes.

    Hills pet food is just very poor quality….so is Royal Canin…full of fillers and grains ..once again vets push for hills and Royal Canin due to the kick backs they get. Both also invest in vet schools…although they claim it’s a balanced diet ..it’s done with crappy ingredients…for example pea protein isn’t the same as meat protein. As the pet food industry has grown the life expectancy of our pets has decreased.. just go back to the 60s and 70s … wolves don’t die of diabetes… the anatomy between a wolf and our domesticated dog is about 99.5%

      Wolves are not dogs, nor dogs evolved from wolves fifty years ago. Not taking sides here, but pointing out the fact that you don't have a wolf (unless you actually do), but a dog.

      First, ask yourself who is telling you what companies are poor quality....people with nutritional credentials and expertise? or people with actually no nutritional training and selling pet food or their books or consults. you have to choose who to believe. 2nd...fillers and grains. Well, there's no such things as a filler but marketers created and use the word well and grains do indeed provide an assortment of bioavailable nutrients. Again, who is saying what? who do you believe? 3rd...I trained vets and their teams in their hospitals for 34 years. there's no such thing as kick backs for vets. Again, ask yourself who is telling you that. Try and find one vet in the country with about 25,000 vet clinics, someone getting a kick back. Maybe ask why they push those foods since they see lots of pets every day and see the results of foods. Hills and RC teach at vet schools and sponsor conventions and lectures. Absolutely! Who else would you suggest teach them nutrition, especially therapeutic but the experts? who is telling you which ingredient is crappy? Wolves don't live long enough to get the age related diseases our dogs get. They don't live half as long. And you prefer a diet of basically anything they can get when they can get it to a scientifically optimally balanced diet to prolong health and or mange disease? Does that make sense? Anatomy of a wolf? Watch my video from last week Are dogs Carnivores? It might help you.

      @conormcquail3504 DOGS aren’t wolves. Dogs have extra genes that allow them to digest grains. (2) Wolves are not entirely grain free either. They will eat what’s available which includes grain, fruit, berries, etc. (3) Scientists are not getting kickbacks. They report that dogs eating excessive meat with get pancreatitis & other issues. Stop feeding wolf diets to dogs Dumbas .
