Gotta applaud Hyundai for taking risks and bringing us a modern day Subaru Baja. This probably won’t be a huge seller for them but it certainly builds brand awareness. Wonder if Kia will bring us a more sporty El Camino variant 😝
I think it would be a bigger seller if they could reduce the price a bit (even if it means cutting features) and replace the 2.5 base engine with the 1.6T hybrid. Its rated 38mpg/38mpg city highway in the Tucson, so even if it just did say 36/32 or so in the Santa Cruz would be a big improvement, and its more powerful and responsive than the 2.5 base.
Great review, very detailed! I've been driving an Ultimate trim, here in Canada, for a bout 5 months now and it puts a smile on my face every time I get in it. The lack of knobs and buttons took me a couple of days to get used to, it's really not a big deal.
The dash is the Star Ship Enterprise Bridge! As far as the bed use your head and buy a utility trailer! 8x10 and you can haul any thing you want! And keep your good stuff good! Don't Forget the 100k warranty and free oil changes!
I traded in my 30,000 mile 2019 Nissan Rogue sport se awd for the Sta Cruz SEL awd. I loved the Nissan but needed a pickup truck so the Hyundai Santa Cruz was our new "truck". Ridgeline? Please...they just suck. Took off the Kumho highway tires and put Blizzak DVM-2's on. Nothing beats Blizzaks in the winter. The Sta Cruz plows through the snow and with -45° windchill it's perfect for extreme weather. Very happy with our new "truck."

I’ve been watching your channel for a while and have been eagerly awaiting your 100k sub count goal. I think it’d be super fun if you threw everyone for a loop and when it comes time to do your “windowless white van” it ends up being a review of one of those covert sleeper vans where it’s kitted out with a bed, kitchen, shower, etc. I think that’d be pretty hilarious and entertaining! One aspect of the armrest test should be comfort when holding your sweetie's hand. It's amazing how frustrating it can be when sweetie is feeling 'relationship-y' on a road trip, but then your hands are just dangling, or very uncomfortable. Something my wife and I test in every potential vehicle!
As an owner of the SEL model, I do not miss the activity package at all. Also, this thing is fast enough without the Turbo. The towing capacity is interesting. It says non-turbo 3500lbs. But I read a spec that said the weight was dependent on AWD. I will say it will tow 3000lbs with ease. I got around 15-18mpg.
@@adilbasit6330 Yes mine is an AWD. The after market soft tonneau covers are useless for me. The first one I cut open got by a thief. The second one got damaged by the sun. These days, I just carry a tarp and a cargo net in the storage another the bed. I may try 3 section hard cover next.
I have the ice white SE premium Santa Cruz and it’s everything Hyundai said it is. Very happy with its fun to drive love the power and stylings. Feel very safe in it.
Recent engine issues aside, they came so close to a practical/fun to drive vehicle here. The bed needed another 12 inches in length. If it's just a big tub in the back, it's basically a big cooler, suitcase or 4 bags of pet food.
I was lucky enough to be selected by JD Power to test drive the Santa Cruz for 3 weeks prior to its release. It was the limited fully loaded turbo version. Very fun to drive, loved many things about the vehicle however the touchscreen was somewhat annoying because some of the touch points were very small and hard to hit without looking at the screen where a volume power on and off knob is much more intuitive. I did give Hyundai a lot of constructive feedback and hopefully they will listen for the refresh in a few years, otherwise I think the vehicle is a home run for Hyundai.
The big miss for me with the Santa Cruz (and the big win with the Maverick) is the SC’s lack of a hybrid drivetrain. I drive mostly city and congested highway miles and low to mid 20s in 2022 just doesn’t do it for me. I otherwise like just about everything else so let’s see if Hyundai offers this in hybrid or PEV in the future. I know these are just testers and you don’t have to live with them, but literally filling up twice as often / paying twice as much for fuel doesn’t make any sense. Add environmental and political concerns with oil extraction to the economic pain and I’m certain that my next car won’t be a gas guzzler.
My husband is also trying to hold out for a hybrid. In the meantime we are saving up the $$$ to help make the payment lower once we are ready to actually purchase.
Hyundai has perfected the 'sport drive' feel and power. I currently drive a 2019 Hundai Kona and if the 'sport drive' option in the Sana Cruz is comparable to the Kona you will love it. Switching from 'normal' to 'sport' is the push of a button and it immediately feels like a completely different vehicle. I'm going to take a look at the Santa Cruz and if it's even close to my expections, I'm going to own one.
Used to sell Hyundai in 2017 and the Tuscon turbo line was always the most underrated vehicle in the line besides the genesis line. Lifetime sales people would always be asking each other when they thought it would coming out back in 2017! Glad they took time with it and worked everything out. Besides the warranty for a truck, the fact that the turbo as well as the engine components are all covered in a standard warranty for three years longer than any competitor. Who does that!?! Hyundai does and they are swinging guillotines for the competition. If you look at how they turned the luxury car competition into a food fight versus a tank, than the promise from this section of product development is very promising. Fun fact, the genesis took ten years to become the luxury line it did even with large loss from production of the early years.
I love my Santa Cruz Limited in Mojave Sand. I live in an area with several super cars, and the Santa Cruz gets more attention than all of them. The Level 2 self driving system is a game changer on long trips as well. With a bike rack on the back for my family’s bikes and the retractable tonneau cover to keep everything else dry, this trucklet is setup for any adventure we can throw at it.
I actually like the front grill on the Santa Cruz better than the Tucson! I wish the Tucson had the square fog light housing as opposed to the frown-looking thing

I bought new 2016 Kia and it’s engine lasted 72,000 before it went poopy in it’s pants. I’m talking connecting rod thru the block. They have also had fire issues in the past.
@@jesturcastillo I must give them credit that they did honor the warranty. They put a remanufactured engine in the vehicle. They also provided a rental car during the repairs. I traded it in very shortly after getting it back.

Se model in stone blue . I like the analog cluster , the infotainment system and controls of the base model better than the top of the like one .

Something exciting for crying out loud. At 5'0", 70 years old, and iffy knees, she had trouble stepping up high enough to get into the truck and even with the seat jacked all the way up, felt like she had zero visibility. The Santa Cruz seems like that visibility would be even worse
16:15 I can confirm it doesn't have it, nor does it have the memory seats of the Tucson. Its weird they stripped some Tucson features in what is essentially the pickup version.
Subaru has wasted many good “truck craze” years to cash in on nimble, comfortable, more economical small truck market. All I want is a very comfortable ride, quiet, plenty front legroom (Ridgeline failed for me on that), not guzzler, easy to park, a bed in back. I am disappointed both Santa C. and Maverick do not offer clamshell doors with less back seat room and more bed length as option for many who are not hauling people in back seat.
@@gwcrispi I know this is ages later, but I have a 2016 Veloster Turbo with 81k miles on it. I abuse the heck out of it (God gave me extra lead in my foot). We do regular maintenance and have never had any mechanical issues. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Hyundai with DCT

TFL took a dual clutch SC off road and had to stop after less than a minute due to the DC burning up. Also Hyundai brags about 5k towing but they do not include a factory brake controller. Injury lawyers are probably going to call this a defect when they chase the ambulances that have to scrape people off the road.
It never actually overheated though… Andre just decided to stop. This one is the wet dual clutch, would have been nice to see if that makes a difference off road.
Fun fact: those Santa Cruz emblems on the bed rails and over the wheel arches are functional! They mark off the centers for the wheels and center line of the bed. Also, “smaht pahk” is not available. (I work for a Hyundai dealer) #themoreyouknow
I have been looking for a trucklet. The options on the Santa Cruz drives me crazy. I prefer the non-turbo engine and the 8-inch screen, but the lack of automatic climate control and adaptive cruise control on the SEL might be a deal breaker for me. I want the car but there's no trim level that I like.

@@damilolaakanni Not if these are being purchased by Younger buyers. Meaning the people whom Love to race from stop light to stop light. And as such LOVE to launch their vehicles. An 8 speed auto (Or Auto Tranny for that matter), has a Torque Converter, Whereas, a DCT does not.. Therefore there is no TC to overheat.
'Thorough, entertaining review and impressive camera work. It's an interesting vehicle, but it only makes sense to *me* at $30k, with the (less-fun) non-turbo engine + 8-speed auto trans combo. I'd like to see the lower trim levels tested, in addition to the maxed-out luxury versions, but apparently Hyundai is not happy about releasing those trims for review.
Hyundai has officially refused to put anything but turbo models in their press fleet. Its not very comforting that they have very little confidence in their naturally aspirated powertrain. Frankly, I wish they copied the Maverick, and the base engine should have been the 1.6T hybrid they have in the Tucson, and abandon the 2.5 NA. Its sluggish in the lighter Tucson, so its likely sluggish in the slightly heavier Santa Cruz too.
@@jacobyo99 Well the 1.6T hybrid I mean. The Tucson in Korea has the 1.6T non-hybrid, and its a dog, even slower than the 2.5. But the 1.6T hybrid that gets that big time power boost from the electric part of the powertrain makes 226hp and gobs of instant torque, and most reviewers felt its very lively. REal world fuel economy isn't as high as the Maverick hybrid, but its more torquey and sounds better.
I have the sel with the activity package. Worth every penny! No one who buys this needs to win races. Other than halogen headlights I have nothing to complain about
I think the Santa Cruz is a cool vehicle but it's sales aren't great compared to every other small size pick up. I think it's specifically because it's priced way to high and Hyundai dealers are trying to gouge everyone coming in by adding 5-10k over mrsp I don't think the Santa cruz won't be around for to long if Hyundai doesn't smarten up and address this.
Almost bought one back in December, glad I cancelled. This is the one car in America you can go into the dealership and just buy, they are sitting in lots.

Fold down the tailgate for longer items. Obviously if you haul lots of big things this isn’t the right vehicle but works for many tasks.

I have a 2016 Hyundai Veloster Turbo. Haven't had any mechanical issues at all and I abuse the poor thing. 81,000 miles and still going strong.

The DCT is a dealer breaker. I have no confidence in it long term, especially towing 5000 pounds.

It is exactly the same DCT that's in my Veloster N that I track all the time. It got a serious workout last year with zero issues. I trust it.

Update: I've towed my Veloster N to the track on a two dolly. Twice now. No issues pulling. Stopping without E brakes is the bigger issue.

It would make more sense for me if it had a larger bed. At least a 5.5 ft bed. I honestly don't use an 8 ft bed much but when I do. I REALLY need it.

TFL took a dual clutch SC off road and had to stop after less than a minute due to the DC burning up.
Also Hyundai brags about 5k towing but they do not include a factory brake controller. Injury lawyers are probably going to call this a defect when they chase the ambulances that have to scrape people off the road.
It's easy to imagine burning up a dual-clutch at super slow speeds where the clutch is constantly slipping.
It never actually overheated though… Andre just decided to stop. This one is the wet dual clutch, would have been nice to see if that makes a difference off road.
It may not be a truck, but the state I live in requires truck plates.

Fun fact: those Santa Cruz emblems on the bed rails and over the wheel arches are functional! They mark off the centers for the wheels and center line of the bed. Also, “smaht pahk” is not available. (I work for a Hyundai dealer) #themoreyouknow

I have been looking for a trucklet. The options on the Santa Cruz drives me crazy. I prefer the non-turbo engine and the 8-inch screen, but the lack of automatic climate control and adaptive cruise control on the SEL might be a deal breaker for me. I want the car but there's no trim level that I like.

Who Complained??? We Love "Sweetie." Oh yeah, the Santa Cruz is pretty cool as well. Especially because it's a DCT(In the Higher HP engine) and NOT a CVT, which everyone is using nowadays.
Hyundai’s DCT has been problematic in the past.

IMO, for it's application, a DCT is actually the worst option. Should have gone with the 8 speed autos instead.
@@damilolaakanni Not if these are being purchased by Younger buyers. Meaning the people whom Love to race from stop light to stop light. And as such LOVE to launch their vehicles. An 8 speed auto (Or Auto Tranny for that matter), has a Torque Converter, Whereas, a DCT does not.. Therefore there is no TC to overheat.

'Thorough, entertaining review and impressive camera work. It's an interesting vehicle, but it only makes sense to *me* at $30k, with the (less-fun) non-turbo engine + 8-speed auto trans combo. I'd like to see the lower trim levels tested, in addition to the maxed-out luxury versions, but apparently Hyundai is not happy about releasing those trims for review.
Hyundai has officially refused to put anything but turbo models in their press fleet. Its not very comforting that they have very little confidence in their naturally aspirated powertrain. Frankly, I wish they copied the Maverick, and the base engine should have been the 1.6T hybrid they have in the Tucson, and abandon the 2.5 NA. Its sluggish in the lighter Tucson, so its likely sluggish in the slightly heavier Santa Cruz too.

@@jacobyo99 Well the 1.6T hybrid I mean. The Tucson in Korea has the 1.6T non-hybrid, and its a dog, even slower than the 2.5. But the 1.6T hybrid that gets that big time power boost from the electric part of the powertrain makes 226hp and gobs of instant torque, and most reviewers felt its very lively. REal world fuel economy isn't as high as the Maverick hybrid, but its more torquey and sounds better.

The roll up bed cover takes a foot of the usable bed length.
Yes, you only have a little more than 3 feet of bed when the cover is open, making it mostly unusable.
I like the styling but honestly it’s a Tucson with less internal storage and poor side visibility with that surfboard-sized C pillar.

I think the Santa Cruz is a cool vehicle but it's sales aren't great compared to every other small size pick up. I think it's specifically because it's priced way to high and Hyundai dealers are trying to gouge everyone coming in by adding 5-10k over mrsp

Almost bought one back in December, glad I cancelled. This is the one car in America you can go into the dealership and just buy, they are sitting in lots.
