    Ridgeline owner here. This thing is cool! I also like the new Maverick. I think it was smart for Hyundai to specifically avoid calling it a truck. The Ridgeline has received relentless chiding for not being a real truck. Ford has the truck cred to get away with it on the Mav. I wish my Ridgeline had those bumper corner steps. I really miss those from my Silverado.
    I am interested to see how much traction these gain and if more manufacturers enter this space.
    Excellent content as usual, Tom. The Frontier and this video were the very first two I watched this morning. Thanks for your hard work bringing us quality work.

      @GregAase 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Also a Ridgeline owner.....The Santa Cruz Limited is $41k....for not much more, you can get an upper tier Ridgeline, which is longer, has a V6, and a spacious back seat. The pricing is off on this one.

    • @aaronbehindbars
      @aaronbehindbars 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@GregAase I somewhat disagree. Hyundai has more modern tech. Gone are the days of Hyundai being needing to sell their vehicles at a discount to mainstream brands. They are a mainstream brand now.
      The other thing is that you can get a nicely equipped AWD Santa Cruz for around $33k, much less than a base Ridgeline, albeit with the less powerful base engine. Most people don't care that much about horsepower.

    • @1MarkKeller
      @1MarkKeller 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Passport owner here, I think Honda missed an opportunity by calling the Ridgeline a truck instead of a UTE, by avoiding all of the arguments with "truck" people I think they could have sold twice as many Ridgelines as they have.

    • @aaronbehindbars
      @aaronbehindbars 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@1MarkKeller While "ute" maybe would not resonate with American buyers the same way is does Down Under, I think you are on the right track as far as how Honda messed up the marketing for the Ridgeline. Honda builds wonderfully useful vehicles, but their marketing team always seems a couple steps behind with selling them to the public.

    Mine is on order. Tricky thing is they’re in such demand that you kind of have to settle for color. I would love to luck out and get the sage green. Like the man in the video said it is a thrill to drive handles well. One more thing that is important to me and probably to you is that it is high enough off the ground that you can slide into the seat rather than falling into it and more importantly it’s easy to get out of and stand up. I’m 74 and the knees don’t work quite as well as they used to work. The seat height to me is definitely a plus. I ordered it with the activities package because the tonneau cover is pretty close to critical.

    Just watched Tom's Maverick review before this one, and I gotta say: these two vehicles are aimed at two different markets. The Santa Cruz is more upscale than the Maverick, as where the Maverick is more functional. I'm having a VERY hard time believing someone would test drive both and be left undecided as to which vehicle they'd buy.

    • @aberdeenmeadows
      @aberdeenmeadows 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It is very hard to decide between the two and it really depends on one's lifestyle or what vehicles you already have and where you live. The Santa Cruz is quite capable and I see people who are hardcore Hyundai fans and have had good luck with the brand, moving into this capable car with a bed. It has style and very impressive wherever you go.
      I chose the Maverick and glad that I did. A lot better mpg and a bunch of other good reasons but I would have been happy with the Santa Cruz, too. I took delivery Monday and have driven it for two days now and it is non-hybrid and I was able to get 35mpg on the first day by babying it. I came here, like you, after watching Tom's review of the Maverick and thought hmmmm... let's see that Santa Cruz again!

    I absolutely LOVE my '24 Santa Cruz SE AWD. Car o my dreams! I didn't need or want the turbo because i was afraid of getting a lot of speeding tickets and i think its better without the bed cover because the bed is a little bigger and easier to use without it. Two things worth mentioning here: it is FANTASTIC in deep snow! ...and then there's the Hyundai warranty. I'm so obsessed with it, i keep watching these videos even though i already bought one 😂
    Ps. the SE also has real gauges instead of digital display and i prefer that too. Don't over look the cheaper trim. it still has all the safety features and is super nice to drive. 10/10 stars in my opinion.

    These days if you need a truck of any kind new or Pre-Owned you are going to forking out a huge chunk of change, I sell new Ford's and new Hyundai's at my dealership and from what a lot of what our customers are saying about them is they would like to have a truck, but a ton of them don't need an F-150, or even something comparable to a Ranger which even that scratches the $40k-50k price range for something that has reasonable features, both the Maverick and Santa Cruz have finally unlocked an option for a lot of people who don't need a massive truck but could use a truck bed for light hauling, I think both Maverick and Santa Cruz models are going to be really great for city contractors and people who need that light duty work but don't want to shelve out a years earning for something.
    But yes Hyundai has really been outdoing themselves with all of their models that past couple years and you definitely should keep them in mind when you're car shopping, considering they are quite literally making some of the best vehicles on the market right now.

      There's a reason there's a cult built around the smaller Ford Rangers - with a long bed and a six - they're all the truck 99% of folks will ever need. They're comfortable and well built - and last. Oh - and just a fraction of the cost of a modern new truck - which I wouldn't buy if I won the lottery. And yes - I know what I'm talking about - I was a remodel contractor for 45 years...

At the time I questioned why someone would buy such a vehicle rather than a similar size unibody SUV with nearly equivalent cargo capacity and a roof. The answer was that it was much more practical to bring home a deer carcass in a truck bed than in the vehicle's cabin. Makes sense.

    It’s funny reading through the comments. Several people think it should be a bit bigger, longer, tow more, etc.
    If that’s what you folks need, buy a pickup truck! This is not a pickup truck, nor was it meant to replace them.
    I don’t mean to sound snarky, I just find it interesting how people want this to be something more than it is, when that stuff exists elsewhere.

It won't sell as much as its SUV counterparts (I suspect) but I am glad to see a viable alternative on the road like this product. I intend to seriously look into it. The design is spot-on and not geeky like the previous cars of this body style, handsome from all angles, and the colors are a refreshing change from the blah greys that dominate all other makes. Hyundai does it again! It's a car that can do the grocery run, take you to the great outdoors and yet keep you comfortable no matter what. Great review again.

Hyundai/KIA brand is an underdog disrupting markets historically dominated by American brands like Ford, GM, Dodge or other Asian manufacturers like Toyota and Honda.
    The Santa Cruz made Ford try to catch up but they're offering a traditional looking pick up truck which is like their older ranger. Soon, others will start making smaller trucks so it will be great for the consumer.

    Interesting observation on how quiet it is on the highway, not only when compared to other truck-ish things, but even to luxury vehicles! Maybe more than anything else, that is what will set it apart from the competition. Too small to be the family vehicle for all 5 McLellans, and not fun enough to be my to-and-from workmobile, but something that future empty-nest me would be interested in for sure.

    I didn’t love the look of this when I first saw photos online but in the months since then the concept has grown on me. I might get one if availability is reasonable. I have for years swung between large 4X4 half ton trucks and sports cars. This may be right in the middle for me. I still am not smitten with the looks but the concept is great for me. I have a 3500lb trailer that I need to pull occasionally and I end up carrying lots of dirt and plants. Perfect for that.

    Tom, another excellent review! I have to tell you, if I wasn't still smitten with my '18 CX-5, I would seriously consider the Santa Cruz right now; a sexy, techy, mini-truck, sort of... I wonder if this vehicle will trigger much competition from other automakers? Seems Ford already tried and failed with their Maverick - and it's not even for sale yet! Poor Ford, they keep trying (and failing miserably)! I'd be interested to see if GM or Mopar think it would be worth the effort, I'm sure they'd fare better if they did. Maybe Subaru can resurrect the Brat or a Baja-like vehicle again - always liked those. Is Isuzu still around? This genre would be right up their ally judging by their past efforts. Maybe even something by Toyota, Nissan or my beloved Mazda if this sort of vehicle catches on, you never know. Then again, I like fungus...

    The problem with it is the bed is so short, after initial infatuation people will be asking themselves, what is the advantage over an SUV? In many ways it is even less practical because you can't fold the seats to extend loading space. Perhaps if they cut the cabin to a single bench up front with minimal extension space behind, and extend the bed to 6.5 ft, it might succeed. As is, I am afraid it will end up the same way as Subaru Baja.
