I think it was a pretty fair overall assessment on the Santa Cruz. There is SO MUCH to like about this vehicle - especially the way it drives. At no point does it ever feel like you're driving a truck. I finally got to test drive one last weekend while waiting on my order to arrive. (Ultimate - Canadian equivalent of the Limited, Sage Grey) I primarily need a solid commuting vehicle that can pull some truck duties in the evening/on the weekend and is low enough that my wife can get in and out of it without struggling. This ticks every box for me.
I'm sure the Maverick will do very well for Ford, and probably out-sell the Santa Cruz by a fair margin. It just looks cheap and boring by comparison, and the interior isn't somewhere I want to spend 2.5 hours of my day 5 days a week. The Santa Cruz is on a completely different level on the inside.

Best review of this vehicle I have seen. Many complain there is no volume knob but it has a volume control on the steering wheel. I have always had Hondas. I have a 2020 CRV which I think is fine but I could not believe how much better the ride was in my 2022 Santa Cruz. What I call a Cadillac ride.

I remember seeing this when I was selling Hyundai’s. Glad they came out with it! 👍🏻 Bet that 2.5 turbo go’s pretty nicely. I’m retired now but am excited to see it in person. My 2015 Elantra has a Check engine light on. It hasn’t had one problem since day one. Of course now that it’s out of warranty the light came on, figures. SMH, all I have had to do to it so far is oil changes, new tires, front break pads, wipers, and a main battery. 60 K miles and this is the 1st problem. Probably a oxygen sensor. I’ll have to take it to my Dealer. Luckily they are the Best! I worked for them from 2010 through 2015. Before that I sold high end luxury cars for 15 years. This store really impressed me with their service. They always had top CSI #’s in both sales and service. Try em out, Pugi, Hyundai in Downers Grove, Illinois. Tell em Darryl sent ya.

We just bought a 2024 one and couldnt be more pleased with it. Previously one couldn't get a comfortable ride unless a full size truck was bought. This marks all the boxes in a vehicle we were looking for. Really rides like a car but provides that occasionally needed truck bed. Plus gas mileage is decent. Hyundai was spot on with the timing. Considered the Ford Maverick but its in short supply and the boxy outside design wasn't as appealing plus the addtl towing capacity of the Santa Cruz Limited was higher. Plus the ride quality was so much better in the Hyundai. But to each their own. Purchase the vehicle that best fits you.

I wish it came in better colors. I wish it had a pass-through hatchway between the bed wall and folding rear seats to let you haul longer items. For the price, a cheap- feeling passenger seat - actually ANY seat, is a big fat omission. Wouldn't regular 'ol knobs on the console just BE BETTER than touchscreen everything? For all the clever, weird, nicely considered thoughts put into this vehicle, there's a few things I still wish it had and a few it did away with. At the MSRP, it might be more attractive in 5 years after depreciation. I suppose I could forgive a few things after a several- thousand dollars drop in price.
    Good review.

Hyundai is a smaller company and likely doesn't expect to sell as many though.

Reviewers seem to struggle to categorize the Santa Cruz. Some see it as a short bed pickup. Not really accurate and a description that Hyundai soundly rejects. Others see it as a crossover with a bed. Again misleading, I think. And certainly not comparable to the Hyundai Tucson that's over a foot less in length. The Santa Cruz is even 8" longer than a Santa Fe. To me, the Santa Cruz is more like a (slightly lifted) midsize sedan with a short pickup bed in place of a trunk. It's only about 3" longer than a Hyundai Sonata and in its fully loaded top trim has many of the same bells and whistles.
As far as comparisons with the Maverick is concerned, from the information available it appears the two vehicles are significantly different. The Maverick is considerably "truck-ier". Not surprising in view of the fact that Ford's lineup in the US so heavily truck-centric. Consumers looking for a truck are almost certain to visit a Ford dealer. If they show up at a Hyundai dealer it's an error. Add the substantial Ford fleet sales compared to Hyundai and there's little likelihood that Hyundai will sell even a quarter as many Santa Cruzes as Ford's sales of Mavericks. But that's not necessarily bad news for the Santa Cruz.
Although the Santa Cruz is unique in the North American market, it resembles another product sold in international markets (especially in Australia where it's quite popular). The VW Amarok's bed is about a foot longer than the Santa Cruz (5' vs 4'), a difference that makes it about 10" longer overall. Unlike the unibody Santa Cruz, it's a traditional ladder frame utility vehicle with stronger off-road chops than the Santa Cruz and and both 4 and V6 diesel engines. Nevertheless, it projects the same overall look and feel and the "adventure" vibe the Santa Cruz is meant to embody.
In that context it's worth noting that Australia is an important market for Hyundai. It may well be that the success of VW's Amarok there suggested to Hyundai that a similar concept might work in North America. In any case Hyundai turned over the design of the Santa Cruz to their California design studio to come up with a design for a similar vehicle that reflects American tastes.
It's also noteworthy that Hyundai chose to put the corporate 2.5L four banger in the Santa Cruz. In turbo form it's an engine now standard or optional in at least 8(!) Hyundai, KIA, and Genesis vehicles and coupled with the 8 speed DCT in at least five. It's appears to be an excellent choice with strong performance and better fuel economy than a V6.
Is the DCT the best choice for serious "off-roading" ? Not really. But that's not the intended mission of the Santa Cruz. It's a great engine for daily use and for loads that are unsuitable for a sedan's trunk or an SUV's interior cargo space. A couple of years ago in a review of the Amarok I asked why Australians would choose it over an SUV with a similar size cargo hold The answer I quickly received was that coming home with a dead deer in the bed was preferable to sharing it with passengers. OK, 'nuff said.
All in all, the Santa Cruz is a niche vehicle. But I suspect it will be successful enough to justify Hyundai's investment.
