I learned this back when I was dealing with a grown boy with low self-esteem. He would nitpick and make rude remarks to me about my appearance and accomplishments, all the while seeking my approval when it came to his accomplishments. These men have traumas from childhood, then perpetuate the lack of love or encouragement onto their partners.
I've heard it said that, "It does not matter how much you do for a man that does not want you". The sooner the woman realizes the relationship is one sided the faster she can leave that relationship. So don't stay in the relationship if you are maintaining the relationship. Tough pill to swallow but you have to be willing to leave for your well being rather than staying for his.

So I learned to be self affirming myself. However, the (black) man in my life needs affirming. He is constantly seeking affirmation from anyone. He wasn't raise in a home with a man, and his mom is tough and rugged too. So he seeks affirming from men and women. Tony, most women don't need compliments. I've gone years without hearing compliments and it doesn't bother me. Actual it feels weird for someone to give me a compliment and difficult for me to even accept because I already know who I am and who's I am. A compliment doesn't really mean much unless its a significant other or a close family or friend. But there are always exceptions to the rule and there may be a small group of females that need compliments or they will become very insecure.

I think that's so interesting! Definitely like the perspective of how you were raised, since I was raised to be an overachiever and not focus on things women usually focus on, I became a strong individual list. So when I talk to my friends both male and female I always talk about their achievements and ask them how it is going. I find that men really respond to this and I have had many of them who are in relationships like to talk to me and get that validation of their achievements from me because that's how I communicate. I think when I tried to tell the stuff to the women there with they don't get anywhere because they weren't raised to focus on achievement so much. But the flip side is I don't know much about being the typical woman, never really learned to cook or do those types of things so there's always a bit of a balance issue there. But I know how to speak men so to speak because I always cared more about what I was doing rather than the female side but I'm also very empathetic so I like to listen to people too. The way you described and explained it makes a lot of sense why I have this issue where many men are coming to me just to talk even though they have someone.
Agreed! I didn’t grow up all lovey dicey, touchy feely. I love to cuddle and stuff like like that but it has to be balanced. I like compliments on the right things. The only way I could be insecure is if I see him saying things to other women that were inappropriate. yes and even in a middle class area, I have been affirmed but it is rare, and people would say the same things. I am intelligent and I have beautiful eyes. Few people, men and women have told me that. I wouldnt be insecure about it but I know in the past when I grew up I was not affirmed and neither by my parents. They never said I was beautiful or intelligent. Just now years later my mother would sign her emails with 'beautiful'. I feel it can be different reasons. if you are not cool and have standards people wont want to say you are beautiful etc But yeah I believe that man is highly insecure and hide behind some facade, I cant really blame him but in my case im transparent and open and if people starts to disrespect me , I walk away and I still keep on being open and repeat the process. So even if people hurt you , you can still be open and if the person make a hurtful comment at some stage etc you can walk away. Getting your needs met emotionally outside of your romantic relationship. So instead of sharing your concerns, achievements, fears, etc with your spouse you do this with someone of the opposite sex outside of your relationship. No physical intimacy but emotional intimacy.
