    What are everyone's thoughts about the GH5 in 2020 and the new Sony As7III???

      I definitely keep my gh5. It is small. Light. Powerful. And it can 422 10 bit. More than most of my clients need.

      i'm on the gh5 and can't justify the cost as you said, but the full frame + autofocus is tempting to jump, maybe in a few years when it comes down in price but wondering how easily it'll be to edit multicam between gh5 and a7siii colours wise, if panasonic just fixed autofocus wouldn't really have a big enough reason to switch! hoping for some cool things with gh6

      @David Griffin true! But that kinda goes without saying. The A7sIII is crazy when it comes to low light! Thanks for watching!

    Hi Jake, great review, I've owned a GH5 for 2 years now, we shoot high-end property in S/W France and we love it! Like you said, if I were to be given a Sony A7s iii I'd love it but I'd never use 10bit 4.2.2, It's over kill for our line of work. I tried 10bit on the GH5 and it's totally not necessary in our line of work. Where the A7s iii shines way above the GH5 is low light, which is something you didn't mention, that's the only reason why we would swop to Sony.
    Great work, very easy to listen too!

    • @JakeMcHugh
      @JakeMcHugh  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think there's much reason to get rid of the GH5 for a lot of us. For what we paid compare to how much it cost to upgrade to the newer options on the market I'm not sure if it's worth it. And yes, you are correct I forgot to mention the low light of the Sony A7sIII. This is probably because I shoot mostly in control lighting situations so I don't run into that issue as much, granted I have thought about trying the GH5s for it's lower light capabilities. Thanks for watching!

    the auto-focus is the main problem for me about the GH5. I own both the 5 and the 5s and the auto-focus... can't rely on it almost ever.
    One thing I don't see mentioned anywhere which to me is a HUGE plus is the 180 degree shutter. I don't think (correct me if am wrong) that the Sony cameras have it.
    Thanks for the video - was snap and pop and to the point

    • @JakeMcHugh

      I love using the shutter angle on the GH5 too! I’m so use to it now that it feels weird when I use my Sony and have to set my shutter speed. The autofocus is the only issue on the GH5 for me. If the GH6 has good autofocus I think it’ll be a hit. Thanks for watching!

    I'm keeping my GH5. I upgraded to it a year ago from the G7 and just got the Olympus 7 - 14mm lens a week ago. If there's any camera I'd upgrade to it'd be if the GH6 came out and had superior auto focus.

    Amen! The gh5 has been an absolute rock for us, and continues to be. The sync scan feature rarely gets a mention, but this feature has saved my shoots more times than I ever thought I would. Recently shot an interview with a very cool custom neon sign in the background, which required an exact shutter speed of 156.4. The A7s3 would have completely failed in that environment. I would love to upgrade to the sonys, but feel that I'd always need a trusty gh5 in the back, because it's just so bloody reliable. Also, 10bit 4k HLG is beautiful and such an efficient file size @ 150mbs.

    So I have been a M4/3 user since the G2, which I replaced with the GH4 and then added the GH5 and then replaced the GH4 with the G9.
    During those 8 yrs (or so) I got the 12-35 mk1 and the 35-100 mk1 and then the 14mm f2.5 then the 100-300 (and then a gimbal, then a Mavic Air) then I ventured into the world of Primes: Pan/leica 25mm f1.4 and 15mm f1.7 and a used Samyang 12mm f2.0 (perfect for the GH5 on a Gimbal) a Nocticron 42.5mm f1.2 (OK that one was extravagant) then a Laowa 7.5mm f2.0.
    All of which has cost about the same as an S1H with one lens.
    With next year’s GH6 I am not worried that my lens collection is about to become redundant (let alone the fact that the BMCC or the Z cam E2 M4 use the M4/3 mount)

    • @JakeMcHugh
      @JakeMcHugh  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good point. I think that people who say Micro Four Thirds is dead often forget that there is more than one company using the lens mount. Basically all the more affordable Cine Cameras are MFT! Thanks for watching!

    I am going to purchase another GH5! I really do love it!
    I was going to hit SH1, but I have heard too many things directing me away!!
    Its SO HARD to upgrade these days, SO many choices!!
    The GH5 may have some setbacks, but it truly does have some MAJOR PROS!!
    My colouring is SO natural out of camera with no work in post or correction needed!
    The colour profiles truly are SOMETHING else!
    Great video, thanks for that vote of confidence not to upgrade to Sony!
    I still need to figure out if its GH5, GH5s, or one of the S series models.... LOL
    I liked and Subbed!!

      @JakeMcHugh  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah lots of choices that it can get overwhelming. I think any of the models you are looking at will do the trick. The GH5s is something i thought about trying at times and the S5 is one of the best cameras on the market for the price. Thanks for watching!

    in my opinion, the only upgrade from GH5 to a7S iii is the sensor size and 4k120p.

  • @ExploreTravelTV
    @ExploreTravelTV 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I use the GH5 as well for a few years now but really eyeballing the new Sony, I do a lot of run and gun video for my Travel show and sometimes events and other things so better auto focus and low light would be really nice but ya, a bit too expensive for me for now as I am not making money on my channel yet or not much shooting other things. Maybe have to wait for next version or when the price drops, would need new lenses too. I do like the smaller factor of Gh5 for Travel too.

    • @JakeMcHugh
      @JakeMcHugh  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m in the same boat justifying the cost of the A7sIII too. No doubt it’s an incredible camera, but the GH5 does cover me for about 90% of the things I do and the smaller lenses are a very nice advantage like you mentioned. Thanks for watching!

  • @TomScryleus
    @TomScryleus 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video Jake. Im using the GH5 for my channel. I think the value is amazing still.
    2 things I miss is better autofocus, and better low light performance.
    But spending that much money on the A7Siii is just not worth it (unless you're a pro).
    I do however consider getting the A7C. which will have those two features.
    The sad part is the expenses for not just the body, but the full frame lenses.

    • @JakeMcHugh
      @JakeMcHugh  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed about the price of full frame glass. I’m hoping that whenever we get the GH6 that it will have Dual Native ISO like on the GH5s and better autofocus. Those two things would be a Deciding factor for me and I think a lot of people. If we could get recording to SSD via USB C like the pocket 4k that would be a nice touch as well! Thanks for watching!

  • @gcprost
    @gcprost 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have two GH5's. I think that if I was looking to add another camera to my arsenal, it would be another GH5. I would like better autofocus, as I shoot events but I wouldn't spend the money for the Sony A7S3. If I was going to upgrade, I'd buy the Panasonic S5, as I sometimes shoot photos and this would upgrade me in both photo and video. The reason I haven't done it is the price of the lenses. The Panasonic S5 is not a lot more expensive than the GH5, but I have a ton of M43 lenses. I would be starting from scratch when it comes to full frame glass.

    • @JakeMcHugh
      @JakeMcHugh  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The S5 seems like it packs a punch for the money. You’re right about the lenses, expensive and not as much to choose from yet with the L Mount. My goal is to one day have a cine mod vintage lens kit that way changing camera systems isn’t as much of a challenge and only would require a canon EF adapter of some sort. Thanks for watching!

  • @voidwareprohibited
    @voidwareprohibited 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's important to compare apples to apples. I have the A7S III with the Zeiss 16-35mm f/4. That's an 8-18 f/2 on the MFT system. The Zeiss weighs ~500 grams with stabilization. The Panasonic 10-25 (20-50 ff equivilant) weighs ~700 grams without stabilization, and is full frame equivalent of f3.4, and costs $2,000. I generally keep the Tamron 17-28 f/2.8 (400 grams, cost $850) on my A7S III and the body + lens weigh less than the GH5 setup, have so much better low light, same stabilization, way better auto focus and tracking, plus everything else. The glass for MFT is only lightweight when you're talking about slow glass. Anything comparable to full frame is going to be just as heavy, if not more so, and way way more expensive. And, at the end of the day, it's connected to a non back-lite, half size sensor, so low-light video suffers significantly, as does bokeh.

    • @JakeMcHugh
      @JakeMcHugh  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While I understand what you are saying and agree on some parts the point of this video isn’t necessarily “why the GH5 is better than the A7sIII” because it’s not. I would love to own the A7sIII someday and I do think that if someone has the money for it they should seriously consider purchasing it, but for the most part the GH5 covers me and I think a lot of people for half the price if you can get away from not using autofocus and shooting in lowlight. Speedboosters do help a lot with lowlight, but you will always be chasing full frame in terms of depth of field, but does anyone really need to shoot at f1.4 on a full frame for video? I am not a fan of the 10-20mm at all because of its price like you mentioned and it’s not like the autofocus is any better on it than the sigma 18-35mm with a speedbooster which I can get for much less along with having the ability to use it on other cameras. Thanks for watching!

    • @JakeMcHugh
      @JakeMcHugh  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While the autofocus has come a long ways with the GH5, I still prefer the autofocus of the a6400. The IBIS on the GH5 would help with the longer focal lengths you may use when shooting wildlife. I think with a monopod and the GH5 it could get the job done for wildlife, and handheld for sports would look good. If you want to see what the autofocus of both cameras look side by side I highly recommend checking out this video here where I compare them:

    I love my loyal GH5 but i have to admit that i have an eye on the A7SIII. But it is more dreaming than concrete plans. When i think realistic, the GH5 is still absolutely enough for my needs. I have a different question to you: I saw this eyecup the first time in your video and instantly ordered one. Searched for something like this very long, never found something and using a display-loupe instead. How do you like it?

      I don’t use it as much as I thought I would, but when I do it’s amazing. I love it for when shooting outside or when I’m wearing my glasses. I use it more for when taking photos than video, but the video taken with it is usually smoother as well. I hope this helps!

      @@JakeMcHugh I really hope so. At that point and with some more cheap e mount lenses from Tamron (hopefully on the long end), the only advantages that mft would hold anymore would be lens size and stabilization. Would you still recommend the GH5 today? Even over the S5?

    • @JakeMcHugh
      @JakeMcHugh  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would still recommend it today for sure. Over the S5? Thats tough. It really depends on your needs. For everything the GH5 "lacks" the S5 is better and what the S5 "Lacks" the GH5 has. The Gh5 lowlight and photos aren't as good as the S5 because of its bigger sensor and dual native ISO. The S5 does come with VLog, the GH5 doesn't, but you could find one used that probably has it. The S5 lacks unlimited record time unless you are using an external recorder as the GH5 doesn't. The GH5 also has better IBIS and you can get it for only around $1k right now and it's only getting cheaper. I think the biggest thing to consider is the price of lenses and the option for them. The lens field is more developed for the GH5 and are usually smaller. Plus it's easier to adapt to. The L mount doesn't have the most options out there yet and you will be paying a lot for them unless you already have some Full frame EF glass (if you want to use AF) you can adapt. Make no mistake though, the S5 seems like a beast. The fact you can get a full frame camera under $2k with a lens that can shoot 5.9k RAW externally is insane. It just depends on if you really need that or not in my opinion. If you already have an external recorder and full frame glass you can adapt, the S5 would be the way to go for sure. I have been using the GH5 for a few years now and the only thing that really bothers me is the lowlight and maybe the AF. Thats about it. I feel like I don't take the full advantage of the camera because I mostly find myself shooting on sticks, not using the IBIS, and I haven't even touched the anamorphic settings on this camera. It's been super reliable for me and I will be having a tough decision to make once the Mark II and the GH6 are out. I hope this helps!

    • @dericsanchez4081
      @dericsanchez4081 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JakeMcHugh thanks for the detailed response. You make some very good points. The main thing that was holding me a bit back on the GH5 was the MFT sensor but the S5 seems to be a full frame GH5. I’d be looking to pair the S5 with the Sigma 28-70 or the GH5 with the 12-35. Might need to rent these to get a better idea.

    You are wrong about lens size and weight. 12-35 2.8 zoom is equal to 24-70 5.6 FF zoom, so even 3.5-5.6 pancake zoom will be a) a lot cheaper b) smaller c) lighter or similar in weight d)brighter in aperture. And if we look at primes like Samyang 45 1.8 or 75 1.8 they are freaking tiny and cheap and they have AF. Does mft have any similar 0.9 AF primes? Not even close. GH5 user here. But I might jump ship if Panasonic does not bring a killer GH6 with a working AF.

      You cant compare the 12-35 2.8 to a 24-70 5.6. You have to compare it to the 24-70 2.8 which we all know is 1.95lbs and $2200 vs the 12-35 2.8 which is 10.76 oz and $800.

      Haha I feel like that goes without saying because we both know how good the Sony’s are in low light! 😂 thanks for watching!

    I really like my GH5, great camera for the money. But: the AF really SUCKS, horrible!

      Yeah it could use some work. What firmware are you on? I recently did a video with the 2.7 firmware and compared it to the Sony a6400. While I don’t think it’s quite there yet, many people were surprised by the results from the GH5.

    I own a GH5 I will not sell my camera. I primarily use my GH5 for still photography.

      It is still a very useable camera in 2021. Especially if you are using it for photography. I'm mostly using mine for video and other brands are first starting to grab my attention for video specs. Thanks for watching!

      @@JakeMcHugh You are welcome. Thank you for the reply. I just wonder what the GH6 specs will be?

      From what I have seen so far they are sticking with 4k. No 8k or 6k which is fine for me. I'm not sure how much of an upgrade it will be for photos

      @@JakeMcHugh I have read the sensor might be upgraded to 24 megapixels to 46 megapixels. 46 megapixels seems to be a big stretch. I do not think a M43 sensor could handle 46 megapixels. I am in hurry to upgrade to the GH6. What every the GH6 will be should be interesting.
