I don't plan on upgrading anytime soon. My GH5 with a metabones and the sigma 18-35mm is enough for my clients. I've yet to see a company that can compete with Panasonic's UI (besides BlackMagic Pocket but the battery is yucky), and have the same amount of features built in. My clients see the footage and are amazed even when I submit in 1080p. I have pushed the GH5 to 3200 iso for pictures and video, and after a little cleaning, its still usable. Only time I'll upgrade is if the GH6 is announced haha.

GH5 or the G9 are so relevant during these economically challenging times. Affordable cameras, versatility with lens, easy to use, reliable, and give results you need. Good lighting, good sound and a good story, and this camera will be relevant for at least 2 more years.

To light the subject you have to blast a ton of light on them. Makes them squint, adds complications, limits camera angles with lights. I agree it's the best solution BUT when cameras improve their dynamic range this will be less of an issue, meaning less gear and less hassle on set.

Hey Scott. I couldn't agree more with every point you made in this video. Whilst newer cameras drum up a lot of hype, the GH5 was YEARS ahead of it's time and is still perfect in so many ways! The longer you own it, the more it surprises you as you discover new features just by playing about. Last night, I attended a wedding rehearsal and tried some handheld shots using I.S. lock. I watched them back at home and they look like genuine tripod shots! As you mentioned, people get drawn towards these newer cameras with features they don't really need. At the same time, they overlook some of the fatal flaws such as overheating, that this camera has NEVER suffered from. Can you imagine telling a bride you only have half of her ceremony because your camera overheated?!?! Sometime getting the basics right is much more important than showboating while having gaping wholes in your basic functionality. Also, just to mention that people looking for a genuine steal at the moment should also check out the Lumix G9 which shares many of the main features of the GH5 for an even cheaper price. Keep up the great work Scott. As always, your honest and common sense approach is so refreshing here on TH-cam :)

But....I live in Vegas it was probably 110 deg and I was doing time lapse of workers putting in artificial turf. was going ok for many hours straight then I tried to shoot some 4k 60 footage and it crashed on me. My gopro overheated too with little usage. It was just so so hot out (even in the shade) otherwise I have not had any issues. Great camera.

I set up my church's entire livestream multicam using Gh5s. They are fantastic! Love the colors, my biggest gripe (which is from most) the auto-focus leaves something to be desired. However, thanks to focus peaking, tell my camera ops to shoot in manual focus and it's perfect. I'm still getting an R6 when it comes out, I'm just a Canon fanboy. Camera aside, do you have minimalist lighting tips for people who need to be mobile and don't have access to AC power all the time?
I really want to use better lights (only have 2 dim LED panels), but they must be battery powered. I shoot videos in a gym, so I can't run power cables in case customers trip. However I shoot solo, so the limit for me is probably 1 powerful light and some reflectors/diffusion cloth. The max payload I can move around with is usually 2 light stands, 1 tripod, camera backpack, and 2 small LED panels, but they're not bright enough to power through a 2-3 stop ND filter.

I use the EOS R for Gimbal work, I use the C200 for sit down interviews, but everything else is on the GH5 and GH5S. I have the GH5S on a shoulder rig, so stabilisation isn't that important.
Honestly I could do without the Canon cameras, but if someone stole my GH5 I'd buy another one TOMORROW.

Makes a lot of sense. But u can't prevent films makers from jumping at the hype of a new camera release. Those ads and specs have a way of convincing you remotely that there is something better out there.
I know a lot of other guys who jump at every camera release wagon and after buying, it just sits in their shelf collecting dust waiting to be replaced by another company that offers an upgrade from what they already have.
    I'm a gh5 shooter!

Gh5 is still a great camera. But the sensor struggles a little with overexposed parts in the image in my case it was a white sodden fence reflecting the light. My c200 handle it well even the Pocket4k but the gh5 delivered bad skin tones. Exposure was perfekt on skin but I guess the sensor was pushed to the limit with the overexposed fence

I love my GH5. Thanks to you. I have a Sony A7III as well these days. But honestly for the film work I have been doing for the A7III I have to use an Atomos Ninja V for the Time limit. We all know we don't have those issues on the GH5... It would be great to have a GH6 and a A7iv with no time limit. But until then those two cameras white balanced look great together.

The difference now I guess is the Micro 4 thirds as opposed to the full frame in the new Sony. $1300 as opposed to $3500. Curious which you would choose? Thanks for the real talk brother.

Hi Scott, I’ve been thinking about buying a GH5 since I want to start up my own business to shoot weddings and other events. However, the Olympus Pro lenses are a little too expensive for me at the moment. Eventually I’ll be able to upgrade, but it’s not an option right now. Do the regular Olympus lenses work just as well? What do you recommend?

    • @scottmckenna
      @scottmckenna  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I’m a huge fan of the pro lenses because of the image they produce. The 1.8 models they make are a decent quality but they are so tiny and hard to use because of that. I recommend the pro but if you can’t afford them, try the other ones and see what you think.

It's STILL a beast 3 years later. It's hilarious that the R5 overheats. If Panasonic doesn't come out with the GH6 this year then I'm getting the GH5s for B-camera and calling it good. I'm getting more/bigger cards to shoot in All-i constantly and that's that. Also, why does not one talk about the fact that it shoots in 6k? Yes its 4:3 but get a wide lens/step back? If you're "chasing the K's" this shoots 6k....thanks for the lens tips, going to look into those

hi im currently using canon 60d . but planning to move to mft because of stabilization for run and gun shooting on handheld, better sharpness and smaller compact camera easy to carry around. because im tired carrying around the monopod especially during special events like weddings, its kinda took long time to move from monopod to flycam/gimbal. do you think its good? im planning to get g85 with 14-42 lens because thats the only camera with kit that suits my budget for now, maybe if things going great im gonna go for GH5 or GH6. do you think its kinda big miss moving from aps-c to mft? since i always love to shoot scene bokeh for more cinematic, i realize that panasonic have 25mm 1.7 but when converting to 35mm focal length and dof do you think its good enough? i dont really mind about autofocus since i prefer manual focus, on gimbal seems no problem as well for autofocus since its able to tap focus or using focus wheel on gimbal. so i would like to know your opinion since im planning to change my camera very soon. thanks

@@morpheusmorph13 It really up to you if either your prefer 50mm full frame or 60 full frame look. The 30 can open up a little more which does help but you would be paying for better manual focus even though it is still fly by wire, lower aperture, better built quality and possibility a little more sharpness. To some the manual focus alone is worth it, so up to you. Check out UnTouchedFilms on youtube to see more on the g85 with kit lens. Posting more soon

I'm not a big fan of a 35mm focal length so I wouldn't go with the 17.5. If I HAD to choose only one lens, it would be the Olympus 25mm 1.2. A 50mm equivalent is such a useful all around focal length that you can shoot just about about anything with. Unless you know you need wider, that would be my choice.
