I have many preloaded sd cards, loaded with retrogames, but Recalbox is definitely the best. Games look better because you can apply scanlines from options menu, games run alot better more stable. Its funny how some games run better or worse across various builds its usually the sound.
It's good to know that. Big difference between version 7.1.1 and 7.2.2 when connecting through recalbox manager is the the ability to add the bios. I had to do it the first method you had mention with the sd card and either going into windows or using raspbian to transfer the bios over.

As user friendly as Recalbox strives to be it's begging to be in the Nespi 4 case to really make it the premium and polished retro living room console for anyone to use. (which is my goal for it!) Both are good. RetroPie supports more emulators than Recalbox. Though, Recalbox has an easier-to-use interface. Really depends on personal preferences as to which one to use.

Make sure you install the microSD and boot up the Pi4 once, then shut it down. This will setup the partition for your games. Then follow along at 06:28. Should be good to go then, if not let me know.
@WagnersTechTalk thank you actually I'm just dumb my pi wasn't connecting to the wifi properly it got a patchy signal enough to say connected and give me the ip but then not enough to connect so my computer couldn't see it I have both of them on my mobile Hotspot rn with the pi thetherd to my phone via usbc
What do I do if the share partition isn't created? I have no rom file locations or anything. It worked the first time I did this but I had an error and had to reformat everything and start over and this time the share partition didn't happen. What do I do? Any suggestions?
After flashing the image, place the microSD in the Pi and boot into Recalbox. It will resize the card, create the partition, etc. Then, shutdown the Pi and remove the microSD card from the Pi and insert into the computer. When you install the microSD back into your PC you should then see the share partition ready for loading your games.

Thank you my friend! PS2 not yet, everything else plays pretty well. The last game I show in this video is Crazy Taxi on the Dreamcast and you don't experience the audio distortion that you do on many Retro handheld devices. Some of the more demanding games may struggle, but most play well. I'd recommend a Pi 400 to get your feet wet with it - everything is self-contained within a single keyboard (minus the power supply).

@@MashTec It's a bit wonky on some N64 titles as well in my experience. I'm also getting some odd sound emulation in places I shouldn't like Streets of Rage 2 for Genesis/MegaDrive. Not sure why exactly I assume it's the emulator that RecalBox uses but it's worth noting. Recalbox strives to be the most user friendly but the wifi issue the Jon notes are pretty odd. It's also finicky with bluetooth controllers (slow to connect and if they aren't in the correct input mode it can delay games loading by 30-40 seconds, which made me think the whole system was locking up, very weird). And it seems to have issues Jon and I have discovered with the Nespi 4 case which is a real bummer. Still trying to work through them to see if I can get this to be my living room retro console of choice but may ultimately just try Retropie or Batocera or maybe even something else. We'll see. :(

Thanks for your answer. Unfortunately, I already have a 4GB Raspberry Pi 4 and no use for a second one. If the kit was available with 8GB, I would consider, but I have not found it. I also searched if they sell the controller seperately, but I can't find that either (also, the kit you link too in the post, isn't available anymore) I really like the look of the controller, and it looks like it's very good quality. Guess I'll just stick with my logitech one.

I really hope all these firmwares get the ability to plug the sd card into windows and drop your roms on it. Its such a great feature. How is boot time? I assume 10-15 seconds?
Agree, I think being able to directly access the files on the microSD/SSD in Windows makes things so much easier for the end user. If I recal correctly (pun intended), you were the first to ask me if I could make a video on Recalbox. I rarely forget, to make sure I don't, I have a running list of requests and I hope that I got to this video soon enough. I clocked the boot time at ~48 seconds, that's the time from powering-on the Pi to the point where ES appears. Thank you for the video suggestion and hope it was helpful!

My Retropie for 3b+ and Batocera for OGA is completely set up how I want them. I would like one day to replace my BigBox/Launchbox. Its great but I think I prefer Emulation Station. Not sure if you ever used BigBox or not but it has a ton of nice features but I always have controller issues with it that its annoying. That one is hard for me to answer, it really depends on how I plan to use it (see show notes regarding the NESPi4 case if you intend on using that, may make the decision easier). If I'm going to update an old laptop to play Retro games, I'ld likely use Batocera (though, works nicely on a Pi as well). RetroPie has many more emulators that you can install (under experimental options), easy to customize and some of my favorite emulators only exist there (TI-99/4A - my first computer, for example) though not as easy to setup as other distributions. However, if I'm going to setup a gaming rig for a friend I may consider Recalbox as it's easy to use and setup with a partition that makes copying new games a breeze. I also like TwisterOS, you can run a desktop environment or switch over to RetroPie easily. It's great to have so many options, IMO I'd pick a few and try them out. Which one is the best is subjective and not something I can easily answer - I like them all and for different reasons 😎

I have a cabinet with a Xin-Mo controller that has a 2 player set up. Each player has a 'select' and 'start' button and six action buttons. Is there a way to make it work with this?
Recalbox will boot from an SSD, say using the Argon ONE M.2. I also have a video on that case if you're interested here: th-cam.com/video/62FfPT38obo/w-d-xo.html Just use Raspberry Pi Imager and burn the image to the SSD. Also, you don't need the M.2 case that was shown in the Argon ONE video, instead all you need is a USB 3.0 Type A (male to male) cable, released a video this morning on some new information here: th-cam.com/video/LHZQKr5G7MA/w-d-xo.html . Keep in mind, WiFi on the NESPi 4 case with Recalbox has been problematic for me and why I recommend the Argon One M.2 if you want to go the SSD route (RetroPie worked fine on the NESPi 4 case SSD boot, however). My SN30 Pro randomly (and completely) stopped working with all of my games in my RP4 that’s running Recalbox 9.1 yesterday as I was playing. I’ve tried everything I know how to do to correct the problem but nothing works. Unpair + re-pair - no luck. Forget the device and add/reconfigure - no luck. The controller works just fine from the Recalbox primary interface launch screen…….but literally nothing else.
I noticed when you were going through the games list that the bos art, screenshot and game info wasn't popping up instantly, even taking a few secs at times. Is there any way to make it instant like how the hyperspin pics n info load instantly for each game? cheers :-)
How do you ignore a controller setting if you don't have a controller with enough inputs? Normally all I do is hold a button-down that has already been used and it will skip over that input, but for some reason Recallbox does not.
I would also like a PI 4oo Retropie guide,I like the way you explain things but after a week I still can't get Retropie to work on my 400 I never see the options to configure anything, the ones that look like old pc bios screens, on my machine I go to those options and get a black screen every time, could it be my monitor? I mean a nice simple one step at a time guide for people like me who bought a 400 specifically to get Retropie or something running old Amiga and retro games. If you could find the time and willingness to do that it would be really appreciated and not just by me I bet.

I cannot seem to change # of players when I go to metadata for each game. When I scrape a game, sometimes the # of players is wrong and I don’t see an option to change it. I think I’m on version 8.1.1 of Recalbox.
i stuck on Game partition resize after write image. Cant take command lina and run sudo raspi-config to show linux menu for extend partition. ON Pimiga can easy shut down emulator and have sweet command line. Under Emulation station i cant reach black screen with commamd line. Any help?
This should work: In the EmulationStation interface with a keyboard: * Press F4 to exit EmulationStation. * Press Alt + F2 to get a terminal. the black levels on recall box are not set properly. struggling to find the setting that changes this. I have my RP4 connected to an oled tv, and while the pi bios exhibits true blacks, once recalbox starts, the colors are washed out. anyone know the issue? Can I do this for the retroflag nes pi case with the games installed to the nes cartridge ssd? I followed that video but wanted psp and Dreamcast support. If I followed this how would I configure the ssd so recalbox reads that instead of the micro sd?
In this video I show it being used with a Raspberry Pi 4 which already has Bluetooth built in. However, for a PC without BT you can use an adapter such as this one: amzn.to/3u3lSxv . Although, I don't own a PS4, the description states it will work with PS4/xbox controllers (actually, most any BT USB adapter should work). But this one had tons of reviews and is around $10 USD.
go to options then controller Bluetooth setup option. On your PS4 controller hold share button and PS button same time until it starts flashing blue then pair it to the pi 4.

You can access the network share \ ecalbox , copy your games/bios files to a subdirectory somewhere. Then, install Recalbox on the Pi4 and copy them back.

@@fulbah If you can type \\[ip address] (in windows) and access the share, the Pi is connected to the network. Sometimes you have to back out of Network settings (on the Pi) and back in before it shows connected.
Did you flash it using Raspberry Pi Imager? If so, re-format the microSD and try again. Boot should take no longer than about 5-7 min. from what I recall (pun intended) 😎
Anyone know how to get your recall box to recognize a square 4:3 monitor after building the recall box on a 16x9? Mine just sits on the recall box loading screen. If I do a fresh install of recall box and use the 4:3 from the very beginning, it recognizes it. Annoying.
Likely best to enter RetroArch (SELECT+X or Y) and make adjustments on per-core basis on the core(emulator) you're using. Some may need to be adjusted per-game (Arcade) to optimize screen real-estate based on your preference. You're dealing with many different games which have different resolutions.
Is it possible to duplicate screens? RPi4 have two HDMI ports, and i will love to have same video on both outputs, one for stream one for play! Anyone knows how to set it up?
It shouldn't really be necessary, basically you can use a device like the one I use (HDML Cloner Pro: wagnerstechtalk.com/studio/ ) you take the HDMI and feed it into the cloner pro, the output to your TV/Monitor. The cloner pro can then connect up to a PC (with OBS for Streaming), record to a USB Stick, etc. There are likely cheaper options out there, but it's what I use to capture game footage. I'm not one to live stream at this point, but I could technically.

In PiOS you can drag the HDMI2 over the 1 in the Display tool and that may work. However, I assume you're asking about Recalbox and I don't have an answer for that. Make sure the HDMI is connected to the port nearest the power connector on the Pi 4 (HDMI 0 if it's labeled or far-left if looking at the back of the Pi). Make sure the input on the TV/Monitor is set correctly.
Make sure HDMI is connected as I mentioned above. Power off the Pi, power it back on. Do you see any power/led's on the Pi 4 itself? If not, make sure you have the correct power supply for the Pi 4 (5v 3Amps).
I had the same issue... had to find out that all i have to do is...wait.. just wait for it to come. Be patient. It took about 2 minutes or something, but only on the first start.
You have to make sure the roms copied match the same version of the emulator you're trying to run. See the readme file in each of the game folders that provide additional information.
@@WagnersTechTalk I do but most of quality games like street fighters tekken virtua fighters metal slug etc doesnt run. But oldies like donkey kong is running just fine :D I think I wont be able to have a retro arcade console
@@KLeaTHeR You may just be missing some BIOS files, PS1/Dreamcast, etc. definitely need them and should play quite well as you saw in this video. Check the BIOS in the UI, from what I hear that is more up-to-date than the web interface. Once the BIOS files are copied, you should be in good shape and ready to play all the games you want to play.

awesome video, but how do you switch game disks like for a ps1 rpg? They come with sometimes 4 disks. Using the Pi btw

I have a cabinet with a Xin-Mo controller that has a 2 player set up. Each player has a 'select' and 'start' button and six action buttons. Is there a way to make it work with this?
I'm not familiar with that controller, so I can't answer accurately. Is it USB? If so, may work. I'd say give it a go and see!

How does it work with booting from SSD? Is that possible with Recallbox?
Recalbox will boot from an SSD, say using the Argon ONE M.2. I also have a video on that case if you're interested here: th-cam.com/video/62FfPT38obo/w-d-xo.html Just use Raspberry Pi Imager and burn the image to the SSD. Also, you don't need the M.2 case that was shown in the Argon ONE video, instead all you need is a USB 3.0 Type A (male to male) cable, released a video this morning on some new information here: th-cam.com/video/LHZQKr5G7MA/w-d-xo.html . Keep in mind, WiFi on the NESPi 4 case with Recalbox has been problematic for me and why I recommend the Argon One M.2 if you want to go the SSD route (RetroPie worked fine on the NESPi 4 case SSD boot, however). Have you seen it where the image doesn't create the share partition?
After you burn the image, you'll want to boot from the Pi 4 then you should see the share partition.

My SN30 Pro randomly (and completely) stopped working with all of my games in my RP4 that’s running Recalbox 9.1 yesterday as I was playing.
I’ve tried everything I know how to do to correct the problem but nothing works. Unpair + re-pair - no luck. Forget the device and add/reconfigure - no luck. The controller works just fine from the Recalbox primary interface launch screen…….but literally nothing else.
That's very strange, you may want to reach out to the company and see if they can send a replacement. I've not personally run into this issue.
I noticed when you were going through the games list that the bos art, screenshot and game info wasn't popping up instantly, even taking a few secs at times.
Is there any way to make it instant like how the hyperspin pics n info load instantly for each game?

How do you ignore a controller setting if you don't have a controller with enough inputs? Normally all I do is hold a button-down that has already been used and it will skip over that input, but for some reason Recallbox does not.

I would also like a PI 4oo Retropie guide,I like the way you explain things but after a week I still can't get Retropie to work on my 400 I never see the options to configure anything, the ones that look like old pc bios screens, on my machine I go to those options and get a black screen every time, could it be my monitor?
I mean a nice simple one step at a time guide for people like me who bought a 400 specifically to get Retropie or something running old Amiga and retro games.
If you could find the time and willingness to do that it would be really appreciated and not just by me I bet.

In the EmulationStation interface with a keyboard:

Is there a way to change controls for one emulator only? Like having other controls for NES than for SNES?
You can press SELECT (or whatever hotkey you assigned) + A to enter the RetroArch menu. From there, you can adjust the controls how you wish.
What's the easiest way to apply scanlines,if your not using recalbox. Dont want to mess things up in the settings. And mess up card.
the black levels on recall box are not set properly. struggling to find the setting that changes this. I have my RP4 connected to an oled tv, and while the pi bios exhibits true blacks, once recalbox starts, the colors are washed out. anyone know the issue? Can I do this for the retroflag nes pi case with the games installed to the nes cartridge ssd? I followed that video but wanted psp and Dreamcast support. If I followed this how would I configure the ssd so recalbox reads that instead of the micro sd?

Hello, my computer has no Bluetooth. Which dongle I have to buy to pair my ps4 controllers?
In this video I show it being used with a Raspberry Pi 4 which already has Bluetooth built in. However, for a PC without BT you can use an adapter such as this one: amzn.to/3u3lSxv . Although, I don't own a PS4, the description states it will work with PS4/xbox controllers (actually, most any BT USB adapter should work). But this one had tons of reviews and is around $10 USD.

go to options then controller Bluetooth setup option. On your PS4 controller hold share button and PS button same time until it starts flashing blue then pair it to the pi 4.

You can access the network share \
ecalbox , copy your games/bios files to a subdirectory somewhere. Then, install Recalbox on the Pi4 and copy them back.

@@WagnersTechTalk i tried to connect the pi to my internet i did type all the network name and password and it says not connected but when i type my pi ip address i can have the remote access, im trying to figure out why it doesn't show connected when i open kodi it shows "Connected"
@@fulbah If you can type \\[ip address] (in windows) and access the share, the Pi is connected to the network. Sometimes you have to back out of Network settings (on the Pi) and back in before it shows connected.

Did you flash it using Raspberry Pi Imager? If so, re-format the microSD and try again. Boot should take no longer than about 5-7 min. from what I recall (pun intended) 😎
How did you get the dreamcast to work?
You'll need to download and copy the needed bios files. Then copy your games, should be good to go then.
Anyone know how to get your recall box to recognize a square 4:3 monitor after building the recall box on a 16x9? Mine just sits on the recall box loading screen. If I do a fresh install of recall box and use the 4:3 from the very beginning, it recognizes it. Annoying.
How do I make every game full screen to fit to my tv?
Likely best to enter RetroArch (SELECT+X or Y) and make adjustments on per-core basis on the core(emulator) you're using. Some may need to be adjusted per-game (Arcade) to optimize screen real-estate based on your preference. You're dealing with many different games which have different resolutions.

Is it possible to duplicate screens? RPi4 have two HDMI ports, and i will love to have same video on both outputs, one for stream one for play! Anyone knows how to set it up?
It shouldn't really be necessary, basically you can use a device like the one I use (HDML Cloner Pro: wagnerstechtalk.com/studio/ ) you take the HDMI and feed it into the cloner pro, the output to your TV/Monitor. The cloner pro can then connect up to a PC (with OBS for Streaming), record to a USB Stick, etc. There are likely cheaper options out there, but it's what I use to capture game footage. I'm not one to live stream at this point, but I could technically.

In PiOS you can drag the HDMI2 over the 1 in the Display tool and that may work. However, I assume you're asking about Recalbox and I don't have an answer for that. Make sure the HDMI is connected to the port nearest the power connector on the Pi 4 (HDMI 0 if it's labeled or far-left if looking at the back of the Pi). Make sure the input on the TV/Monitor is set correctly.

Make sure HDMI is connected as I mentioned above. Power off the Pi, power it back on. Do you see any power/led's on the Pi 4 itself? If not, make sure you have the correct power supply for the Pi 4 (5v 3Amps).
I had the same issue... had to find out that all i have to do is...wait.. just wait for it to come. Be patient. It took about 2 minutes or something, but only on the first start.

You have to make sure the roms copied match the same version of the emulator you're trying to run. See the readme file in each of the game folders that provide additional information.
@@WagnersTechTalk I do but most of quality games like street fighters tekken virtua fighters metal slug etc doesnt run. But oldies like donkey kong is running just fine :D I think I wont be able to have a retro arcade console
@@KLeaTHeR You may just be missing some BIOS files, PS1/Dreamcast, etc. definitely need them and should play quite well as you saw in this video. Check the BIOS in the UI, from what I hear that is more up-to-date than the web interface. Once the BIOS files are copied, you should be in good shape and ready to play all the games you want to play.
