@@HuFilmsI highly recommend REDucation and attending one if you can. It’s a great way to learn the ecosystem and explore how RED can integrate into your workflow. @caffeinatedcameras keep the KX content flowing bro, it’s great stuff! I’m at a point where I’m following anyone that just purchased a KX to see what they create and test this tool to its limits lol Thank you both
I just switched from the Canon R5C/C70 to the Komodo X and I have NO regrets. I just published a video of my experience if you’re interested. Thanks for making this video!
I’m gonna sell my Fx3 & Fx6 to get the KX 😊 I shot with the OG Komodo for a music video, and already loved it. But the lack of slow motion options kept me buying it. With the KX, I have everything I need !
Similar pathway as yours, although I have had 2 RED cameras previously. Currently I've owned a Komodo-X for a about a week and had been using mainly R5C for interiors video over the past year. To answer your thought/question of whether the Komodo-X 6K RAW will be greater than the R5C 8K RAW. Yes...without question...every time. The robustness of the R3D codec in the IPP2 workflow, along with the computer-friendly wavelet compression is night and day better than any Canon RAW I've used, which is typically pretty awful. Regarding the company ethic thing: The first RED camera I purchased, years ago, was the DSMC2 Dragon-X. At one point I had a question about something or another, so I called RED to ask. The young lady who answered the phone, when she found out I was a recent RED owner, she "welcomed me to the family." Gotta admit, I've never heard quite that before or since from someone who answers phones for a living. Those are the type of companies I like to support.
Hey, thanks a lot for the very insightful and detailed comment, really appreciate it. You just sent me over to the RED website to watch a video on the IPP2 workflow, wow, really cool. Hopefully, this will pan out for me as I'd really like the camera! R5C is still boss but yeah, the RED, especially the workflow, is on another level.
Great video, I really enjoyed this conversation. I hadn't considered how attached I am toward business purchases and totally agree with you on it. I think you will find that your post production workflow will become more efficient because of R3D. It is worth noting that not all CFXpress Type B cards work with KOMODO X. The Angelbird Mark 2 cards work and the RED branded cards which also happen to be the most affordable. Older Angelbird as well as sandisk cards will not mount so consider that when working out your budget.
Hey Carlos, thanks for the nice comment. Yeah, that workflow has me dead curious. Haven't really worked with R3D files before to be honest. I'm using Davinci for over a decade now and I love the app so working with R3D files could be awesome. I have fairly new Angelbird cards, I did a video on them recently. Maybe, hopefully, the ones I have will work, they're relatively new. I'll get some more if needs be.
Once you go R3D it's hard to shoot on anything else honestly. I shoot on RED and the R5c and there's just no comparison re highlights . Perhaps getting the X will give you that boost to create the films you want to and render images you will fall in love with.
Even though I have the R5c I always do all my photography on a R6 mk ii - the IBIS and 6K image size FF are perfect and the autofocus is amazing. I have to leave the R5c rigged most of the time and found the R6 II a nicer form factor for photography.
This is almost like watching a confessional session on how do I justify taking the leap to RED and does it make sense at all, tough decision, but life is short. Thanks for uploading 👍🏽Why not rent a Komodo X and then use the R5C as your B camera? For me, who mostly does motion graphics, it is the value of having a hybrid camera that is easier to take on the go, I do need a still camera and the R5C is great for that. On my wish list to the R5C 2 full HDMI port, 16 stops 😉 internal ND filter if it ever gets out 🥳.
It all comes down to what you need as a cinematographer or even a hobbyist! A friend of mine who shot with Sony went with the Komodo X, and he's struggling big time to get used to the system. He didn't realize that cinema cameras are not just "turn on and start shooting"; it actually requires some understanding. I mean, he's been making videos for like 7 years and he just found out that Super 35 sensors are APS-C sensors and there's actually a crop factor, lol. My situation is the opposite. I used to have that same Komodo X and ended up selling it to my friend 😂👆🏼 because I hated everything about it, even the almost minute it takes the Komodo just to turn on, lol. I'm happy with my R5C, which is a very capable camera that doesn't need to envy anything from RED.
If it makes financial sense, I think KX will be a great move for you. I think you'll enjoy it and coming from your time with the BMPC4K, you'll fall back in love with global shutter.
Disagree on adapters.. you can turn your super 35 into a full frame(close enough) with ef speed booster. You can also get one with a variable ND built in.. ef lenses are half the price as rf and is better for manual focusing aswell.. EF Lenses all day 🔥
I believe it was indeed Michael Bay's suggestion that made Red create the Komodo, as he wanted something smaller for Ambulance or 6 Underground. James Cameron uses Sony Venice cameras.
you have to ask yourself, WHY you want the RED...is it because the quality will be legitimately more noticeable than say the R5c or the c70 now that it has raw OR is it because you want the "Name Brand" and "Status"... I have made feature films and videos for around 15 years or so (back when 4k was reserved for huge studio productions only or your friends with 6 figures to spend lol) and I have shot and edited and matched everything from Canon 5dmkii to Red Ones - try matching a Canon 7d to a Red One in post lol - but it was possible (the first Avengers film used the 5d mkii as the crash cams and blended it seamlessly) ...honestly I feel like once you get over 4k raw in the Netflix approved category, I am not sure it will make a difference to 99.9% of all people...shot composition, having multiple cameras to seamlessly cut between angles on a shot in a scene, lighting, etc etc will be the difference in looking "studio quality" and "indie quality" ... I enjoyed the video! . ."buy what you NEED, rent what you WANT"
Nope. You have a great system that will work for just about any project. Just charge you clients the rental cost. That’s what I’ve done for the last 3 projects. And the the non X version is even cheaper. Dodd camera(my local camera shop)has 1/2 off rental on Saturday with a return date of Monday morning.
You could get the Canon R3 + two C70´s for the same cost as one Komodo X rigged up :) just saying... its just tools.. if you need the R3D raw theres no way around it.. its way better than anything if you dont have the money for an arri... but working tools the C70 is so much easier on computers and harddrive space and so on and so on :P And the C70 is ready right out of the box :P
I have 3 cameras already. Why would I buy another three that do the same thing? The RED KX is a completely different beast to a C70. It's like comparing a Nissan to a Porsche.
Hehe it depends what you are filming lets say it like that. But as long as the camera can do what you need it to do im happy for you that you got the RED and it makes you happy :) @@HuFilms

OK don't buy RF lenses and use speedboosters then.

you'll regret it, Canon AF and red crop are two really big things,
and yes, clients want red, but they don't like red budget :)
KX would be great with vintage glass - Contax Zeiss with metabones cine C/Y to RF adapter or cine speed booster.
Does the Canon C70 have better dynamic range?
