Angelina is so young, so talented and has a great work ethic! To reach the level of experience she has at just 18 years of age is unbelievable! Angelina is such a refreshing artist. She loves to reimagine the songs she sings ... including her own songs. One thing is certain, she will never be boring.
I love both versions. The slowing down of the song, Toby’s beautiful piano and descending chords, the string arrangement and of course Angelina’s stunning vocals give this version a real melancholy feel.
This is a great example of Angelina's musical talent when she can sing a song one way and bring out certain emotions and then sing the same song slightly differently and bring out totally different emotions. NOBODY coveys emotions like Angelina.
Totally agree Nina. They've been saying for a long time that Angelina would be a perfect songstress to do a Bond movie opening song. One of your other wonderful British reactors called Brit Pops React also have been saying this for the longest time and I can't imagine anybody else doing a better version ofa Bond song than Angelina Jordan. What amazes me more is that how is she and Toby Gad are able to take a song, their original song and transpose it in so many different ways to give it such different emotional connections to it through his musical composition and her vocal dynamics they mesmerize you and hypnotize you into a different direction. Naturally, the Jazz that is infused into her veins and DNA comes out fabulously, but in this song she uses her vocal nuance to really jazz it up ! I think not seeing her sing was added a lot more to it. Just having the audio and focusing on the musical composition and vocal dynamics and performance really added to this version. I agree that Toby's musical genius shine through and his piano playing with the added violins really made this a different sad and darker version of their song. I want to thank you again for continuing your tremendous Journey with our beautiful barefoot princess, you are one of the most vocal and supportive reactors and analysts and your expertise always shines through ! . She has the ability to do so much so well that each word almost becomes a line of the song in itself. I can't remember anyone putting so much detail into each word with great understanding of negative space as well. I do not really know how to put it other than to say it is like songs within a song. Really enjoy what you are doing and that part you played on the piano highlighted how graceful the arrangement was. All the best.

Angelina literally shocked me, I have always loved her voice, but I am more and more in awe of her unstoppable musical evolution, I would never have expected that at her age she had already reached such a stratospheric level of vocal perfection. This is truly a beautiful original piece perfectly arranged for her voices (so many!), both in the early blues versions and in this later fantastic jazz version, what she creates in this slow, melancholic and regretful version is indescribable and absolutely astonishing, even for the apparent ease with which she does it. In reality the instrumental accompaniment is little more than a pleasant musical undercurrent, her voice alone is enough to reproduce the emotional effect of a full orchestra. She is a truly eclectic and extraordinary artist, I understand well why Toby Gad is enraptured by her talent, being able to collaborate with a singer like her leaves a boundless space for the musical imagination, you probably can't even imagine what vocal wonders she can create. Her creativity is simply enchanting and astonishing. 💛🧡❤

I still love the original release and concert versions (wish I could have met you at the LA concert) but I find the complexity she introduces in this “Piano Diaries” version is a whole different level. Angelina has already had a couple of her performances in films. Her cover of Mercy was used during the opening scene of the 2021 film The Hating Game and her recording of The Christmas Song played in the background of a scene of a Netflix movie released earlier this year. Her original song Our Time has been used in an ad by the financial company SoFi for the past year. In fact I saw one of their commercials a few weeks ago with the song, so it’s still being shown.
Now Angelina knows what it feels like to have a singer take your song and make it her own. Except it’s Angelina covering Angelina. I love the original jazz club version where Angelina’s vibe is: it’s not my fault-I told you so. But here, there is more sentiment, more nostalgia, less blame. Same lyrics, different vibe. As much as I like the original, this feels like Angelina right in her space. We were surprised by Angelina’s vocals and attitude in the original, but here the jazziness and wistful, almost melancholic, delivery comes out like breathing for Angelina. I can’t pick a favorite. Both are spectacular. (The official video with the Mustang? Not even close.)

This was not only a different arrangement but is at a much slower tempo than the earlier release, and she even plays with the melody. This definitely gives a more melancholy, sad, reflective feel to the song than the faster tempo pop version, including how she performed it in Glendale. This version takes my breath away still, even though I've heard it a few dozen times now. Grammy (nomination, at least) worthy to these ears! (PS Angelina may have left Republic Records, she's no longer on their website artist's wall'. Perhaps she'll sign with Toby's label?)

Touring with a large group like she has been playing with recently, is way too expensive for travel, food & salaries, especially for someone starting out. Toby on piano, an acoustic guitarist & a violin or cello player is all she needs. She could always have a special guest, like Jimmy Z, for a concert here or there. Once she is a World famous Superstar, that we all know she will become, then she can afford to tour with as big a band as she wants. Just my thoughts.

Now Angelina knows what it feels like to have a singer take your song and make it her own. Except it’s Angelina covering Angelina. I love the original jazz club version where Angelina’s vibe is: it’s not my fault-I told you so. But here, there is more sentiment, more nostalgia, less blame. Same lyrics, different vibe.
As much as I like the original, this feels like Angelina right in her space. We were surprised by Angelina’s vocals and attitude in the original, but here the jazziness and wistful, almost melancholic, delivery comes out like breathing for Angelina. I can’t pick a favorite. Both are spectacular. (The official video with the Mustang? Not even close.)

I LOVE this jazzy version because it really showcases Angelina's amazing voice. But, I think I will always like the live version from The Alex Theater because I, like you, got to experience it live. She's incredible. 🥰

Thank you Nina. Agree about Toby, he's a gem and they're like 2 compatible genius peas in a pod. This was not only a different arrangement but is at a much slower tempo than the earlier release, and she even plays with the melody. This definitely gives a more melancholy, sad, reflective feel to the song than the faster tempo pop version, including how she performed it in Glendale. This version takes my breath away still, even though I've heard it a few dozen times now. Grammy (nomination, at least) worthy to these ears! (PS Angelina may have left Republic Records, she's no longer on their website artist's wall'. Perhaps she'll sign with Toby's label?)

Angelina and Toby have provided a few versions of "Bad Valentine" so we always have one to fit our current mood. I like this version best, as it allows us to hear some many colors in Angelina's voice, along with her jazzy vocal choices.

Touring with a large group like she has been playing with recently, is way too expensive for travel, food & salaries, especially for someone starting out. Toby on piano, an acoustic guitarist & a violin or cello player is all she needs. She could always have a special guest, like Jimmy Z, for a concert here or there. Once she is a World famous Superstar, that we all know she will become, then she can afford to tour with as big a band as she wants. Just my thoughts.

I’m not sure if you’ve heard her song Shield from when she was 12. She said that she wanted it to have a Bond vibe and it does.

I have been following Angelina for a long time and completely love everything she does including the other version of this song which is amazing, but she is totally in her element on this version of this song.
