Angelina's phrasing is better than anyone I can think of. I think that is an important part of her emotional impact on us.
So damn tender and intentional. I will never understand how an 11 y.o. girl can even begin to approach the emotional content of this amazing song. And yet, she does. She delivers the emotion and then some. Sigh.
She stays 'spot on' with Roberta Flack's rendition, which is considered by
most to be 'The Gold Standard'. Just a beautiful tribute, for sure.
You are absolutely right, Nina, this is 11 yo Angelina & guitarist Egil Claussen, with an impromptu performance, unrehearsed & in one take, while reading the lyrics on her i-pad. I can't even imagine how good she would sound today at 17 if she rehearsed it ahead of time & re-recorded it. At the end of this, check out her facial expression because, to me, she looks a little embarrassed by the adult lyrics. This is one of my all-time favorites by her of any age, it's just stunningly beautiful & emotional.

I personaly think that Angelina as well as Lucy Thomas are both a gift send from above that only appear once in a few decades in music land. Angelina has such an old soul in music and is capable of just singing everything to the moon. Stunning, absolutely stunning.

This is such a beautiful song. Your mention of the Céline Dion cover makes me realize how old I am. The initial hit version was exactly 50 years ago. Roberta Flack’s hit in 1973 was stunning-like nothing we’d heard before. Slow and heartfelt, like Angelina’s, it was the Grammy record of the year. And she followed that with another record of the year the following year with Killing Me Softly. Her sound was unmistakeable.
Angelina patterns her cover after the Roberta Flack version, but I’m familiar enough with the original hit to hear where she departs. The musicality, the emotion, and her ability to go her own way at such a young age is just more evidence of Angelina’s truly unique talents. Angelina takes on the best singers singing their best songs-and she never disappoints us.
Angelina is like a sponge that instantly absorbs the essence of every song she sings. Roberta Flack is unreachable and Angelina, at just 11 years old, is the closest.
She really doesn't sing a song. Angelina transmits the emotion that the song represents. Amazing how well you understand that.
Angelina at age 11. So many wonderful performances. And this is one of my favorites. To begin with, it's one of the most beautiful songs ever written (IMO), and Robert Flack's version is pure perfection. But I will never understand how this sweet little girl can take a very deep love song like this, and make me weep. Cheap mic and poor acoustics, reading the lyrics on her ipad, doesn't seem to matter. She just has "IT"! She has become such a beautiful, talented, young woman, and her future has no limits. But I do miss the little girl who always touched my heart so deeply. But that was "once upon a time". Love your Angelina reactions, Nina. You are a very sweet and beautiful person.
I loved Frank Sinatra's songs for his phrasing....he never sang the same song twice in the same way. Angelina is very much like Frank in that way.
There's so much emotion here! How can she do this???? Angelina's impromptu covers are often better than most artists' rehearsed versions. She's a musical giant. Great reaction, Nina! If you liked this, I bet you'll like her cover of I Will Always Love You. It's flawed like a precious diamond can be flawed, which only increases the impact. Angelina's willingness to slow this down and fully expose her vocals both allows and requires her to demonstrate her musicality and vocal skills. I believe she thrives on this testing of herself. She knows the single guitar won't cover for her complex stylistic choices and she revels in the opportunity/demand (even here on one or two takes) that she own and quite nearly perfect them. And yes, the guitarist (Egil Clausen, I think) is good enough to both stay out of her way and respond to her while giving a stable foundation upon which she can build (and boy does she)! A really extraordinary tandem!
grammy noms come out nov 10..reduced nominations to 8 in best new artist this year ..will angelina win...her 6 song ep was released in time to be considered this year...
That would be great. Personally think the Grammy's now days is a popularity contest and not really about vocal artists anymore, unfortunately.
Angelina is teasing us with anticipation for each "easter egg" of pure sound. Like the gentle caress of fingers across a cheek.

If you needed a little sweetness this is the song to fix you right up. I love this rendition a lot.
There is so much Angelina that will transport you, most often when she's spitting in the face of the rules we're trained to follow in vocals. Her jazz roots help her pave her own unique path, not at all scared to feel out a song her way, thank goodness for that. I think that's where it's easier for us to identify and appreciate her personal artistry. All the breath control in the world for her age the whole way through her catalog, clear as day, so for sure we know these must mostly be choices. She still does that all the time, even uses the breath sounds as part of the song sometimes it seems like. I swear she decided, no world, breathing sounds aren't taboo, and she's right. I look forward to the world challenging her on that, and soon after admitting defeat. We had to throw real music, live music, creativity, imperfect humans another bone eventually.
Egil, in Norway, and Ivan Mendez, in Los Angeles follow Angelina's improvisations with such skill in complimentary roles.
I think we have forgotten how deep emotions are when you're so young. The pain and anguish of your teen years, how sharp your feelings are, how deeply they are felt. Your first love, your first rejection by someone you love, the crashing despair. I'm not surprised that someone of Angelina's age can feel this, but being able to express it so poignantly, so beautifully, that's her magic. For an older singer, it's usually the reverse. They have the technique, but can they still feel that razor-edge of pain?
And Egil's guitar follows her voice like a lover.

I am continually surprised that no one, particularly vocal coaches, ever seem to mention how phenomenal her low volume vibrato is! I mean, sometimes, the notes stops and yet you can hear her vibrato through her breath! I have never seen or heard anyone ever come close to it and she has had this ability since she was very very young.

TEARS, as this song reminds me of my first true love.. Her angelic voice, so soft, gentle and as usual for Angelina, full of emotion. Angelina's emotional singing, portrays what your feelings would sound like and she has this uncanny way of drawing you into another dimension and touching your most inner feelings. She undresses your soul and exposes it to the true meaning of what music is meant to be. I have been into music since the 70s and very few artist has made me as emotional as Angelina has.. Much respect to Angelina, whose name belongs on the same page with the best artist of all time. That's just my opinion. PS: Just Subscribed ☮

My sister Sheridan recently accidentally swallowed a fly, While she was talking I actually saw it fly in her cake hole lol, eyes bulging she leapt with a fright coughing gagging red faced spitting trying to cough it up but to late, it's protein now 😂 Sheridan was genuinely angry knocking the phone out my hand as I tried to film her in a full on panic DESPERATELY trying to get the fly out. The 5 of us laughed hysterically, her best friend Lucy LITERALLY on her back laughing so hard she almost passed out. Sheridan said **** you all and stormed upstairs 😂 I had to share with someone it's still FRESH on my mind happened less then an hour ago suddenly your new video pops up had to tell you 😊 That woman can sing for sure

Quite amazing but it’s not the lyrics but it’s the sound of her voice that brings tears to the eyes. As I’ve remarked for the last few years, this young lady is a phenomena. Even more amazing is her vocal growth over the last year or two, I believe that if this young lady is managed and handled correctly, she will be the most famous female vocalist of the last 75 years.

Here are good examples of how Angelina can do long cascading runs with every note seeming to be spot on, and her breaths becoming a key component of the lyrics.

The emotions are usually from a life experience to draw upon but she has not had that life experience in some of her covers since she did them when she was so young. Miss Nina, you have a great voice!! I agree, this is a beautiful song.. and Angelina sings it as if it was one of her favorite songs!! This isn't the first time she sings from a tablet and in a nano-second instinctive manner, is able to apply the most amazing emotional vocals.. "STUNNING" is correct, her ability to improvise adding her well known melisma for that special touch... Great reaction Nina, you are a unique talent, and a joy to watch... Angelina's singing is overwhelming . The perfect voice for one of the most beautiful love songs ever written. The guitar tone is , however, way toooooo much up front and punchy and ringy. I actually find it chringworthy. Not the playing, but the overpresence and sharpness. In fact on second thoughts, it would probably been way better acapella.
