It's my absolute favourite all time piece. It speaks directly without knocking the heart. The best discription is non else as Tchaikovsky's himself when he said "I've put my soul in this symphony".
The lamento in b minor (maybe the darkest key) in the finale is so revolutionary, that next composers like Mahler and Rachmaninoff were inspired by it in there works (Mahler's sixth).
This preformance is so amazing! Thank you very much

I have heard so many great performances of Tchaikovsky's 6th here on TH-cam. Some were so good I thought wow, it doesn't get much better than this. Somehow it always does... this performance being a prime example of that. The fourth movement is played with all the pathos that I'm sure Tchaikovsky felt while composing this masterpiece.

UNforgettable !!! Such a top league orchestra playing what must be Tchaikovshy`s greatest symphony " " EL Pathétique ". A unique experience watching this. Thank you.

4:55 - 5:12 and onwards... I wouldn't be surprised if Tchaikovsky actually cried when thinking, or playing that. It sounds typical to say this: but I don't have words for that... For that blessed beauty...

“I'm not interested in having an orchestra sound like itself. I want it to sound like the composer.”

When you think of Tchaikovsky and the 6th, you must remember he is also the man who wrote the music for the 3 great ballets. Tchaikovsky and dance is inseparable. Listen to Solti and his 1994 performance with the BPO of the same you'd understand why Solti, who debuted his career as an operatic conductor, knew how to weave dance into the 6th.
There's alot of clarity in the SSO's playing with little to comment on in the individual sections. It is however rather stodgy in presenting the organic unity of the piece. Listen to it with your eyes closed (ie, don't watch it) and it will be clearer. The great challenge of playing a symphony, particularly this Symphony is the players ability to play as one. The strength of its ability in this area is easily missed by inexperienced listeners. Inexperienced listeners listened to dynamics, colours, attack etc which are the stuff of hi-fi bluff. But the true art of orchestral music is much more subtle and not easily discerned. It's normally helped by knowledge of the historic background of the piece and its form and structure (and alot more).
The 6th symphony is not abstract like Sibelius' symphonies. It does not grab your attention like Beethoven with clashing chords. The 6th, from the opening notes, speaks directly. In a great performance of the 6th, 18 minutes (about the length of the 1st movement) does not feel like 18 minutes. In the SSO's version, it felt like much more than that.
The issue is not the number of players. It is the number of nationalities. It is supposed to be SSO. But in actual, it is more like USO (United).

Thanks for the information, I am just recently exploring classical music. Do you have other orchestras that are loyal/ faithful to recommend?

@@alanegedy5649 HI! The world of music is so filled with sight and sounds it'd take you quite awhile to explore its length and breath. SSO Channel is a wonderful start point. Read a book to be your guide. "Who's Afraid of Classical Music" (Michael Welsh) is readable and fun. Like a child in wonderland, the thrill and exhilaration is in the exploration. See ya around!

What the hell is the conductor doing in movement 2? I'm trying to follow the music, which is in 5/4. Lost me.
