I bought this record in 1949 when I was 12 years old, took it home and played it on our Motorola, and I cried like a baby,
and have been crying ever since when I hear this. My record was of the NBC Orchestra, Toscanini directing.
Dear me! I know that recording! I had it too. It is a masterpiece. I bought it when I was 15 after hearing it played live by the New York Philharmonic under the baton of Dmitri Mitropoulos in an open-air summer concert in Lewissohn Stadium in New York.
I dont know how many of you noticed, but THE Valery Gergiev uses no sheet while conducting this piece and I only noticed after almost 7 years of listening to this. I cried when i found out that he uses no sheet. Shows his love for the piece that he knows every single note for every single instrument throughout the whole piece... breathtaking and astounding. I love this and i love you!
Did you know the Rotterdam Orchestra in Holland fired the Maestro because he refused to comment openly on the conflict in Ukraine , music is not politics. So I wrote a not so nice letter to that Orchestra.😛

Not surprising.
Still gives me goosebumps and tears. So much of todays music does nothing for me. But this. This still hits like it always has. Timeless masterpiece of human expression ♥️ ❤️ 💖 ✨️
Did Valery Gergiev wipe away a tear to the powerful emotional ending of this symphony?
You know, come to think of it, this is a very amazing symphony. With its very sad ending, it's no excuse how the symphony was first performed nine days before Tchaikovsky's death. My birthday is the same day that Symphony was performed. One of the best parts is the ending of the first movement.
The whole symphony is one of the best part of music history.
One of those rare performances you can refer to as amongst the greatest.
The trombone’s dynamics is insane!
Tchaikovsky had discovered the musical alchemy of tears.
Grieg and Tchaikovsky were colleagues. After Tchaikovsky passed, Grieg wrote that he was a very sad and tragic man. His emotion lives with us in this beautiful deep work.
I loved the close-ups of the musicians and how carefully they watched every nuance of his expressions and fingers.
I think the musicians are watching their sheet music and the conductor is watching them.

Excellent tempo... not too fast... so you can actually hear the glory of ALL of the instrumentation and ARTICULATION. One of the best performances.
yeah for real. so many conductors have a tendency to play the end of the development (15:40 onwards) of the first movement too quickly (as in like double the tempo) and it's such a shame
The best thing about listening to this music is the instant feeling of relaxation. It's like an instant remedy for a weary soul.
This is breathtaking! This is by far the best interpretation of the masterpiece I have ever heard! So deeply Russian !

Не только согласна с Вами, но всегда думала и думаю, что фильм о Петре Ильиче - совершенно уникальное произведение. Я смотрела его первый раз, когда мне было 16-17 лет, я была просто раздавлена, потрясена, убита. Я не могла представить , что фильм, музыка в нем могут так сильно воздействовать на человека! Фильм - чудо чудесное, как будто ты был свидетелем жизни гения. Столько эмоций, чувств, переживаний, воспоминаний , ассоциаций ! Говорят , что Смоктуновский долго не мог придти в себя после съемок......

Tremendous interpretation my god
So much detail and richness of texture revealed here, and such pathos.
The last movement is his retelling of his broken heartedness. That major section is so short lived, it shows you how short lived his love life was too - fiery and passionate, but also gone in a blink. The final climax is like being shot in the heart with a gun - everything after that is your minutes left alive on this planet, wondering what you will spend those minutes thinking about?

So beautiful at 6:00 and yet so plaintive almost begging the most beautiful piece ever. The genius and passionate Tchaikovsky his soul tormented i feel torn at loving this symphony and not wanting to hear it as it just reminds me of his tragedy

Только что вернулась из Большого зала консерватории, слушала 6 ю симфонию Чайковского . Была в восторге! Сейчас переслушиваю с оркестром под управлением Валерии Гергиева.. Браво!
Ну и как вам аплодисменты сразу после кульминации? Ну и конечно же между частями.???
Лично меня, как внимательного слушателя это очень сильно отвлекло. К сожалению. Я испытала разочарование. Так уж получилось, что я мечтала услышать когда-то именно эту симфонию именно в этой консерватории, и какого было моё разочарование, когда я просто не смогла погрузиться в музыку "от" и "до"... Я ведь проездом была в Москве...
Работа дирижёра и оркестра замечательная, несмотря на то, что в некоторых местах играли не вместе определённые группы инструментов (хотя может, это я такой перфекционист) Но я даже не заострила своё внимание на этом, художественное воплощение этого величайшего творения было впечатляющим. Я разрыдалась на кульминации 1 части симфонии и тут.... аплодисменты... Произведение ещё не закончилось! Эээх! 😢
Впервые пришла на большой симф. концерт в 7 лет. Это была 6 симф. Чайковского со Светлановым в консерватории. Слушаю до сих пор о слезами

This is different of every other performances i've seen of Pathétique. The Finale... wow. Just wow. Amazing. Powerfull.

Each movement is a symphony of awesome beauty in itself, but, together, the four movements produce a mighty, overpowering sensation of the most profound emotion. The lavish orchestration of rich barbaric splendor is also awe-inspiring. A human being did not write this. It was composed by a human being who was taking dictation from the gods. And these musicians, ye Gods! How great they played this masterpiece.

И всё же это произведение великого композитора не трагично. Напротив, очень духоподъёмно. Оно философское и мудрое. Конечно, это личное впечатление.

Финал симфонии не предполагает борьбы. Всеоблемьющее горе. Плач и крик разодранной плоти и души. Никакого философского обобщения. Это абсолютный конец всего для человеческой сути. Вечная тьма .

Every single symphony Tchaikovsky wrote are outstanding! For Tchaikovsky to carry so much music in his head are beyond comprehension! Tchaikovsky opened the doors for a Brahms or a Rachmaninoff and others whom for me personally was the pinnacle of musical accomplishment! I don't mean to belittle others but somehow Tchaikovsky speaks to me in a language I understand!

Makes for an interesting discussion. Beethoven's 9th was a game changer, especially in putting a chorus section into a symphony. Tchaikovsky seemed to make this piece a personal biography, alternating between triumph and despair, using a 5/4 time in the second movement, reversing the traditional order of movements and ending TWO movements with musical descents into total quiet.
@@williamford9564 He must have struggled how to end this symphony: in triumph or despair. In the end he chose the order of the movements that end in resignation and despair. And that was how he had decided to end his life: there and then.

Normally when I listen to music on TH-cam and I'm not doing anything else, I like to watch from time to time the orchestra and the conductor. In this case, after the initial applause, I started my usual daily yoga session. After listening for a while, I realized that Gergiev almost embodied himself in this symphonic monument of romanticism, and then he himself 'disappeared' in a fusion with the sound, pronouncing the sound itself to sing the poem.
Praise to Tchaikovsky and the orchetra, led by an infinite Valery Gergiev.

Маэстро Гергиев браво это лучшее исполнение из многих слава Богу, а сколько в этой симфонии страдания, муки, боли и отчаяния особенно в последней части чувствуется такая мука , одиночество и оставленность, скорбь до слёз, безвыходность , в этой симфонии показана как история России ибо сколько страданий перенесла Россия и русский народ а так же показана в музыке жизнь одного человека это судьба самого композитора Чайковского, разве иностранцы поймут жизнь России её судьбу и страдания и испытания русского народа в истории, ни за что не поймут.
Причем тут "иностранцы не поймут" - в музыке нельзя делить на нации. Все народы страдали в том числе и от России...
Tchaikovsky’s depression had a lot to do with his homosexuality. Russia was, and is, a horribly homophobic place.

Tragic that Tchaikovsky died at the height of his powers so soon after composing this final masterpiece.
According to musical history, he declared this masterpiece as his own farewell... Dramatic until the end of his days.

I just listen and enjoy, without trying to read things into it. Would love to hear Gergiev and his Orchestra perform this live, although have heard many times live before.
So do I. Ten years ago I heard him in concert with Bruckners Seventh. In the last minutes I decided to rise immediatly after the last note and shout hurrah, what is really unusual for me. Despite the possibility to blame myself enormously. But the hole audience felt the same and we did it together! Unforgotten!
