built or bought you have a true GEM of a piece in your collection that is absolutely PRICELESS!!! Id looks exactly like the real movie robot animatronic puppet from the movie. You really did it justice in recreating this robot to is minuet accurate details. Hats off to you, genuinely great job
That's so awesome!! Ever since I was a kid I always wanted a Johnny 5 figure! I've hoped and prayed some company would make him! He's one of my all time favorite bots!
John Was the very first person to build a replica Johnny Five Robot, Good on you John.. So little information was available back when you built your J5, You did a great job,
You did such a fantastic job on your J5 and I'm so insanely impressed by your journey in building him! I started building one around 2008 and I printed off all of your pictures you had available on your site for reference. Life just kind of got in the way, so I wasn't able to complete it at the time, but I plan on getting back to it at some point soon and incorporating some of the new Input-inc designs as well. Thank you for your incredible work on this! It's truly inspiring.🙂
Can't wait to see yours when its done, so keep going. Yes so many way to improve the build these days. Programing and control systems are so low cost and easy to use now.
A 4 year project😮. Now I don't feel so bad about my Robby taking over a year. Without your help on the animatronics it would easily take 4 years to complete. Thank you very much for your contribution of block head to thingiverse. And your Johnny 5 looks Amazing.
Awesome!! I bought a model kit of him in 1/6 scale and I built him up piece by piece & modded/customized him for full articulation and movie accuracy. But that is incredible work right there :)
I am really surprised there hasn't been a commercially available model kit of both Johnny 5 and Wall-e. The closest thing was a Lego Wall-e several years ago.
Do you have a video of your Robohut? I'd love to see all the life size robots. As a kid I was in love with robots and had all kinds of books. I would have loved to visit a place like yours... all my old favs re there. Do you have a R2D2 and C3PO? Such iconic robots and I know almost anyone can get or make an R2D2, but the C3POs are harder to find. Anyway - wondering if you have a walkthrough.. I didn't really see one in your videos, but maybe I missed it.
There is a guy in the UK that sells fiberglass Planet robots "robby" there is a small tin toy that was called Planet robot and this large one is made to look like the toy. So a collecter I know bought one. He did not like it and said I could have it for free if I could make it walk and light up just like the tin toy. So thats what I did. I even made the remote control 2 D cell batter box up to scale. here is a link. th-cam.com/video/WNTaoxBzoMs/w-d-xo.html
absolutely amazing what you have achieved with this build especially with the limited availability of any dimensions etc at the time! That's great you got access to an original robot to help though even if it was for 20 minutes at a time. I was wondering if you knew what the current condition of the original robot you had access to? I know there's one on display at sony studios. Could it be the same one? Thanks
@@Robothut Thanks for taking the time to answer my question and to film your Johnny 5 project. It sounds like the original is still in good hands, and it's great they let you have access to the original robot.
@@Robothut at least Johnny 5 is still alive... but no seriously I always wondered what happend to him. It kinda sucks hes in a private collection, not being shared with the people.
I'd pay good money to look at johnny 5, he doesn't have to move or make sounds. Literally just a childhood dream that drives me mad as an adult. It's like having the one and only original Ecto-1 car in your garage and since the film ended never showing anyone. Ghostbusters to alot of people is their favorite movies. Think of all the Short Circuit fans, yeah we aren't numbered as many but come on, we would like to see the props too. Hopefully your contact that has him will one day pass it on to someone who is willing to share him with the world. #freejohnny
What’s the total value of Johnny 5? Is it half as close to what Johnny said it was in the movie? And if was for sake what would it be for action? It seems to me something like that would be priceless but at the same time a good retirement investment.
I must say this is incredible and what an incredible collection!! Do you happen to remember what his rear tyre was used on originally? I'm really struggling to source a pair of them
Back when the movie was made they were surplus tires , probably military. So to find them now would be very hard and if they were not stored all these years inside "out of sun light and mosture" the rubber might be dry rotted just like old Bike tires get. It would be easier to model them in 3d CAD and 3d print them in a flexible filament on a large 3d printer.
The over sized toy RObby is based on the Planet robot toy. A guy un the UK makes them in fiberglass as displays that do not move. A collector I know bought one but decided he did not want it so said I could have it if I could make it walk. So I said great no problem. I even made the remote control toy battery box in giant scale and it controls the robot.
OK nice but I was telling some people recently they should bring back Johnny 5 BUT now that we have really advanced AI it would be like it's really "ALIVE"!!! Some people told me that would be REALLY cool!
It was 20 years ago that I did this project. So I do not recall the lense details but there are Johnny 5 groups and web sites on line that have all that sort of info these days.
I think by now you should be able to get a Raspberry Pi for something like that that could upgrade that Johnny five of yours not counting the power I'm talking about the computer that would be necessary toward a run it.
You hit the nail on the head. It is the same amount of shop work to build something wrong as it is to build it right, so I always try and put in the time to get the information first, so I do not end up doing the project twice.
Yes the videos I have linked show it moving. I built it in my work shop and had to drive it all the way down to the road then down the road to a opening into the Robothut field and then up in to the hut. Cars were driving by and stopping as I did this. I guess they never saw a Johnny 5 robot driving down there local road and in threw a field to my big Robothut building.

Thank you. It took 4 years to build and research. Lots of people have built nice ones as well, these days.
I'm so happy to see him again! And again, thank you so much for the opportunity to see him in person. I love the utility pack instead of the laser.
Thank you . Yes I prefer the tool box over the laser.

I remember when you were building this! We're pretty spoiled now with all our 3D printing and CNC machining. This is a true labor of love.
Yes 4 years of hand labor. But it was so worth it to me.
Amazing work. Its like Johnny 5 is alive!
Thank you.
The tanker was looking awesome broh... I love it 😃👍

Yes Johnny 5 would be a great robot toy if they ever get around to doing it commercially.
Keep these vids coming! Love the collection man! Thank you for all the hard work you must have put in over the years.

Great one! I love this guy!
well this just looks amazing!
LOVE Johnny 5
i just commissioned a 1/6 from a friend of mine. planning a full size as well but i've only got 3k saved of the 27k i need

I like to buy the small Johnny five any ideas where? 🤔
There have been a few model kits for sale from time to time. I see a few for sale Etsy and on Ebay.
Beautiful work! How could they put toy ones in the movie, but not sell toy ones later! ARGHH!
That oversized toy Robby has me curious...

Awesome
Instead of making the robots with skin they should make loads of Johnny 5s that be fantastic a Johnny 5 we could interact with 😍
Mega cool
woooowww
So, what you're saying is, this required a lot of INPUT to build?
You hit the nail on the head. It is the same amount of shop work to build something wrong as it is to build it right, so I always try and put in the time to get the information first, so I do not end up doing the project twice.
Does he talk or function
Yes , you see the robot function, talk move around on my you tube channel.
Does it move?
Yes the videos I have linked show it moving. Wish they would do a new short circuit movie
If they did anew movie they screw it all up with CGI effects.
Would you ever sell him?
No, took to many years "time and money" to build.
@@Robothut Thanks for getting back to me. I’d love to build one someday.
Is Johnny 5 alive?
Yes but sleeping right now.
give him working eyes to see/scan with
The Johnny five has fully functioning eyes as seen in the movie.
