- Adam meets one of the most beloved robots in cinema history: Johnny 5 from the 1986 film Short Circuit! This life-size prop was one of the original models made for the film, and Adam gets up close to check out its details and learn how it was made. This robot is just one of over a thousand props and artifacts from film history as part of Prop Store's upcoming Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction: London 2022 collection.

Johnny 5 was one of the only robot friends that was set in "Present Day" in that era. Kids were all in love with r2D2 etc. Johnny made that seem more attainable.

@@xyberviri Probably not, one of the biggest TV programmes in the UK was "Tomorrows World" plus other feature slots in other magazine programmes on TV ( and we had things like The Great Egg Race with Proffessor Heinz Woolf) The BBC did a lot on contemporary science (The Sky at Night too), with TW pariculary covering news of things we would expect to see in the near future - some worked (like CDs) others not, living up to hype or dying from lack of demand or practicallity. BBC Radio 4 ran Science Now / Medicine Now ( since replaced by infotainment programs Rutherford and Fry / The Infinite Monkey Cage , so a bit of "dumbing down" where the complex science is getting lost. Dont forget the UK had the Royal Society and similar looking at scientific things , and we put Issac Newton on our £10 notes for a while, and the Victorians created Albertopolis (Argueably the French had a better Science Tradition but I dont know the detail)

Short circuit and flight of the navigator were always on repeat when I was a kid, loved them.
Those and The Last Starfighter.
Explorers, Goonies, Solarbabies, D.A.R.Y.L., War Games, Iron Eagle, Blue thunder are all films I would put in a similar genre, kind of in age appeal order and Blue thunder being perhaps an adult (not in that way) equivalent. All have some sort of technical marvel in them except Goonies.
Radio Flyer, The Sandlot, Short Circuit, The NeverEnding Story, My Girl. Some crazy movies that I thought were pretty special.

I remember seeing one of the SC2 hero J-5s go up for auction once, complete with WALDO controller (like a robotic suit you wear, it controls his arms) and that poor thing looked like he'd had a stroke. One eye was fully dilated, the other fully closed. He looked cartoon crazy...
1986 is when Short Circuit came out. Remember he has "500MB of Online storage space" per Short Circuit 2, I remember being a kid in the theater and audience all went "woah" with that 500MB line.... never forget it.
I always remember this, because that was the year I was born and Short Circuit is a movie I love dearly.

In 1981 my school got its first computer (just one in the back of the Math teacher’s classroom).
It had a cassette player plugged into it and every line you typed had to have a number before it like 10>.
Then one day a girl just typed in a random sequence and control P and discovered something that we thought was AMAZING, it spread around the school like wildfire. What was it?
She had discovered a way to make the font size increase depending on the number you included. We all tried every increasing sizes, we printed banners for the wall. The old dot matrix printer was working overtime. Everyone was made to stop doing this when a group of us decided to see just how large we could make the font become - regardless of legibility. The printer started up and just didn’t stop. Well, not until the teacher noticed and shut everything down - in the correct order naturally.

Johnny chasing down Oscar on the docks in Short Circuit 2 is one of the greatest moments of my childhood movie watching experience. I remember being on the edge of my seat _screaming_ at Johnny to get Oscar and on the verge of tears that he was sacrificing himself for one last noble deed, just hoping that he would hold out long enough to stop that son of a bitch!

That being said this movie started my love for RC planes too. This one and Howard the Duck got me hooked on Ultralights.....look at me now!
I also loved the part when he meets "Los Locos" and goes 'gansta' for a short bit.
I really wish I could buy this. Johnny 5 was and is still a part of my childhood and always will be!
Now that Short Circuit is on Hulu, I was finally able to introduce it to my wife. She also noticed how the best parts of the look of Wall-e seem to have been inspired by Johnny 5.
Same here. One of the best (PG) root movies from my childhood. The end scenes were especially memorable. Being animatronic I think the visual effects would hold up well.

I still choke up first film and second one I know how they end but still all the actors sell that No.5 is alive.
What I loved about Johnny No. 5 was that he had flaps that served as both his eyebrows and eyelids (to give him an expression) I love how he gets this angry expression with those and the eyes turn into red! That was genius!
The first time we see a finished robot (after the credits scene of “number 5” being built), he’s in a bunker, squinting through those shutters with glowing red eyes and blowing stuff up with his laser. At first we can’t even see that it’s just a test range. If you try to imagine seeing the film for the first time, there’s a great process of discovering the “normal” aggressive tendencies of the SAINT bots as dystopian military hardware, and that sets up a perfect contrast to the gentler behavior and expressions of Johnny 5 after he gains sentience…well, except when he’s fighting the bad guys in the sequel.
@@de-fault_de-fault Johnny Five was definitely a gentle soul. Even when he got mad in the sequel. He still never killed anyone even after they tried to kill him. Even doing wise cracks as he is fighting the bad guys after what they did to him.
When Short Circuit 2 was in production, the studio came to the company my father worked for, Alchemy II (which, incidentally, ALSO designed the Teddy Ruxpin dolls), to scale Johnny 5 down to about 18 inches or so and be remote controlled. The opening scene in the movie, with Ben on the streets of New York demonstrating and selling the little remote-controlled action figures, are the miniature robots my dad helped design and scale down. Thanks for sharing your dad's story. Do you have any other photos or a way to scan those in? There's a very active community that builds minature johnny 5 robots (and full size ones) and think they would be interested in your pictures and story.
@@bluezedd I'd have to remind myself of what I included in the video, but there might be a few more pictures from the fabrication shop there. I'd have to look.
Unfortunately, there isn't much more to tell. Dad was one of many draftsmen/designers who worked at Alchemy. Apart from the Short Circuit movie coming to them, they mainly had a contract with Worlds of Wonder (who distributed the Teddy Ruxpin characters). I remember their next project with WOW being a similar toy line with Disney characters, but WOW kept changing the specs, which caused delays, and caused both companies to eventually go bankrupt. Dad had design and engineering training through the military, but no official degree, and was among the first batch to be let go as Alchemy folded.
I used to bring my Teddy Ruxpin to school and figured out he could play Guns N Roses Appetite for Destruction on the school bus…thank you Teddy for being my first cassette player and changing my life ❤
I've always wondered where Johnny 5 ended up. I haven't seen him since the 90s and I was an enormous fan. I still think Johnny 5 is basically the coolest robot ever created BY FAR. He obviously went on to inspire WallE. He still looks awesome and futuristic to me. He could definitely still kick my butt into outer space!
There must bave been at least 10 of these. In the first movie they had like 6 on screen at the same time. I wonder where they all ended up.

They disassembled the most elaborate j5s, but they tagged and documented it all during disassembly. I am pretty sure that the full size 3d files on thingiverse came from those original parts. Someone invested A Lot of time, so that we can All make our own j5s at home. Good luck all! Happy Nostalgia!!
There are free 3d files for an RC version, and even all the pieces to construct a full size functional j5 on thingiverse. There are even pros who make high-end posable,rc, or AI versions of the j5 toy, and are more movie accurate than the thingiverse RC files. Expect to shell out $$ though!
To paraphrase Dr Jones, “It belongs in a museum!” It is a fantastic robot and one that movie got me directed in my engineering field. Gonna go watch Short Circuit tonight!

The laser rotated from a stored position in the movie... with prop artifacts like this you want to avoid excess handling so they just lifted it up for camera view and didn't spin it.

Seeing this and knowing this robot/prop still exists has made my day. Short Circuit was one of my favourite films as a kid.

this is nuts, I was not expecting it to have survived all these years.
Especially considering that the costumes from the original 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie were seen in a TH-cam video within the last few years, and the costumes were in really poor condition, but I'm thinking those weren't stored properly like the Johnny 5 in this video had been, which is why the Ninja Turtle costumes got ruined.
Johnny 5 is still one of my all time favorite movie robots. The design is just outstanding in my opinion. He can fit through doors, traverse stairs and other terrain, and has a range of motion that is simply amazing. Why there are no commercially available toys of this is simply baffling to me. I know the NYC CNC YT channel has been slowly machining a full scale Johnny, even outsourcing parts to other shops around the world.

My dad built a robot in the late 70s, early 80s that rolled up to the front door and passed out Halloween candy before this movie came out. Dad's work got me interested in robotics. I loved this movie when it came out.
I noticed there's a crack in the plastic on the back above the wheel at 2:29 in the video. Small damage but hope the bidders notice that. The entire piece looks highly impressive and in great shape. Love Johnny 5 and both Short Circuit movies.

If you haven't watched it in decades, you should definitely give it another watch now. I have a deep appreciation for this film even more so now. All practical effects, no CGI. The puppeteers did an amazing job bringing him to life along with Tim Blaney voicing him and doing puppeteer work at the same time in the first film. Tim Blaney did come back to voice Johnny 5 again in Short Circuit 2 but didn't do any puppeteer work in the sequel.

There are several Ghostbuster proton pack resistors on J5, as well as some of the hard to find Legris Banjo fittings on his neck! The tracks Adam pointed out as being manufactured pieces are modified Rexnord tabletop conveyor chain.

I have the Fabco TX5K pistons for my build (as well as a bunch of other original bits), but never figured out the plumbing. Where did you find this?
Why are these hard to find? Publicly sure, but I see all these Ghostbusters hard to find pieces en mass at my job as most of its on 70's and 80's hardware.

That's why they're hard to find though, the surviving stuff is still in use in industry, and the bits in private hands tend to be from people who know how much they can charge the geeks for it :)

You beat me to telling about the conveyor chain. It took me a bit to find it for my J5. Now I need to get back to work on him.
@@tomc8157 The Fabco hardware is still made and easy to find, I placed an order fairly recently... however, Legris changed the design and material of their banjo fittings in the 80s, so the original brass ones are very difficult to find anymore. Most Ghostbusters packs use more readily available reproduction parts. J5's neck actuation needs the pieces to be functional.

Ah, very fond memories of Short Circuit watching it as a kid (the eighties RULED for classic kid movies!) Rewatched it recently and it was rather corny, but still fun. In any case, a LOT of work went into creating Johnny and the other prop robots.
So cool to see they keep stuff like this in good order for such a long time, there's so much love for this character still.
I watched this movie with my kids not so long ago, and they loved it as much as I did back in the day! Great movies like this never age
Absolutely amazing to see an original J5 in such intact condition. During the production of Short Circuit 2, they refurbished a bunch of the original props from the first film, receiving multiple modifications (the entire arm assemblies are different, the toolbox, and parts of the head, among other things) along with a new paint job that didn't quite match the first film's robots. The hero prop kept by Allard has also seen another refurbishing and paint job, so that one's even further from SC1-condition. Absolutely amazing.
I sincerely hope whoever buys him is either part of or gets in contact with the Input, Inc. fanbuilder group, who are the most dedicated fans of Johnny 5 and the props from the fims. From what I can tell, they haven't fully documented a Short Circuit 1 version of J5, only ones from SC2 and Allard's hero. The arms are the biggest givaway.
After scanning back through the film, I'd like to make an estimated guess on the origins of this particular prop.
First guess would be the deleted junk yard scene, where J5 had to hang off a conveyor belt after cutting his way out of a taxi destined to the crusher. The wide angle shot has him in a static pose, only moving parts are his head swivel and his arms, allowing him to sway while hanging. The remnants of this play out in the end credits.
Second guess would be that this guy isn't actually J5 but a static version of No. 1-4. Their heads were significantly less complex, with mostly static eyebrows and no lip lights, just a blank panel with that looks like the gap painted on instead of the etched metal piece (best seen in the round-up scene when 5 reprograms 1-3, as no.3 has his mouth cover missing, showing a very undetailed lip piece). Nearly every prop for 5 has a complicated, detailed head with the lip lights and posable eyebrows, from all the scenes I can spot. Also, the 'military' head coverings were removable, so it's possible they went AWOL sometime after the production.
Edit again after a year, minor epiphany: the ribbed tubing on the wires coming from his head only appear on the robots in full NOVA guise. J5 loses the wire tubing in the same scene he loses his head covers, while flying off the garbage truck. This is visually consistent throughout the entire film across all the robot props.
That being said, the builder, Eric Allard, has commented about this video on his Instagram, claiming the prop as been "messed with", unfortunately with not much elaboration. Most obviously, the laser is attached backwards. Something I just noticed is the neck cylinders appear...odd. The right one isn't mounted correctly, and the hydraulic tubes have been messed with. They were originally very nicely managed, tied off, and wrapped in a silver braded sleeve. Now they're just a tangled mess.
There's a few angles the videographer didn't get of this prop, but there's only so much I can compare it to in the film proper. The current best copy available is a very tired-looking interlaced 1080i master probably performed back for the original DVD release 20 something years ago. If only we could get a new 4k...man I'd spend days scrubbing over every frame lmfao.
One thing that I noticed that's oddly consistent throughout the entire film is J5, and only J5, has a switch on a blank square panel on his back cover (visible around 2:21). Numbers 1 through 4 at no point in the film have this switch, while J5 always has it, regardless of whether it's a full-size hero prop, full-size stunt, or waist-up puppet. The back panel even changes design (the gold bars were not originally present and a more generic circuit pattern was used. The change probably occurred early into production as it's only visible in a few scenes filmed on a soundstage and not in any location shoots), but the switch remains consistent regardless. I have no idea why this is, but it's extraordinarily consistent in the film.
This character was so iconic, I keep hoping he wakes up just watching this. The voice they chose for this Johnny 5 was a big part of the success.

I really miss Johnny 5, I wish they could make a new movie so that the new generation understands how this short circuit was so popular..
Like other films such as batteries not included, sometimes the character design and motion performance of utterly non-human machine characters is just so appealing, charismatic, and somehow, relatable. Short circuit was a triumph in this regard.

Short circuit was one of my favourite movies as a kid and I showed my own kids the movies and they love it as well, a few years ago I did some research to find out about Johnny 5 and when I found they had working robots I found it quite amazing that back then they actually pulled it off and it all worked.
The shear joy of Adam interacting with Johnny 5 was so wholesome! That was wonderful!

This warms my ❤ so much! J5 was legit my first and absolute favorite robot growing up. I’ve probably watched the 2 movies at least a hundred times each AND made a small scale version of him out of balsa wood (my medium of choice at 9 years old). If only I had the money to bid! This baby would be right in my living room. So cool!

Ever since I was a kid, I have always wanted one. I am so grateful that I was born at a time when the world was fun and still made sense.
There is a typewritten document someone scanned that was the manual (not that technical) for the props. The PDF is around and it lists all the SC1 robots and what they were for. The fittings on the head are also used in the proton packs making them a pain to source (trust me i did a couple years back).

Johnny 5 always has a special place in my heart as one of my go-to childhood films. Sure they weren't great movies, but they were unique for sure and just madly entertaining for me!
There was this machine shop that had some videos on youtube a while ago that was doing a full re-build of a Johnny 5, I guess they found somebody that made as accurate as possible blueprints and CAD designs in order to mill out the parts on various machines, and they were making some good progress. I haven't seen an update from them in a while though so I don't know if they ever finished.

I would love to see Adam interview a fully functioning version of john 5. Its been something ive always wanted to request and got pretty excited when I seen this. When I would visit my Dad on weekends he had a Beta player and Short circuit was one of the few tapes he had and I watched it so many times as a kid

years and years ago back in early 90s I saw a Making of Short Circuit. They had said that there was like 50 different Johnny 5 full size models made, and another 20 different Johnny 5s in different states. Then another dozen Johnny 5 Models that were able to Move by Remote Control or thur Joystick control.
So in total like 80 different Models but some were used for Extra background use and Enemy type ones.
I brought this movie up at work and I was absolutely floored by the amount of people that had no idea what I was talking about! Especially anyone even a little bit younger than me (I’m 36)…
I deal with a high volume of clientele throughout the day and proceeded to ask the next 100 or so people if they had ever seen ‘Short Circuit’. … Nobody knew what I was talking about. Only about the 75th person responded with, “Yeah, my Mama’s a snowblower…” At first, it didn’t register and I thought, “OK, that was an odd response. But I found one!”
… It wasn’t till 5 minutes later that it kicked in and I died laughing 😂 . …Needless to say, I felt very old that day😒
Short Circuit was an incredible part of my childhood and will never be forgotten. It almost makes me cry to see Number 5 be sold but hopefully he gets the life he deserves. What a story behind that robot....wish I could see it in person!

I cried tears of joy and sadness as a child in the late '90s when I got to see Johnny 5 sitting in a prop warehouse at universal studios Florida on a family vacation.
Johnny five is the one that sparked my fascination with robots back in 86.
Ever since seeing a robot develop a personality like J5, ive been deeply interested in anything involving AI becoming sentient. And not just on the silver screen either. I hope to live to see the day the first real Johnny occurs. Our lives would change forever.

I love the Short Circuit movies. I would love to see a sequel or a reboot one day especially with the improved robotics and cgi these days. They should do it only of Johnny 5 looks very similar and has the same voice.........INPUT! INPUT! INPUUUUUUT!!!!

This is so cool! I love both movies! Along time ago, like I don't want to count how many years, I was a child, I got to see the Short Circuit 2 Johnny 5. I don't know if it worked or even if it was screen used. But my dad works for Nike (in Oregon) and since he had the Nike Swoosh in that movie, he somehow made his way into storage at the main campus. My dad had the connections and I got to see it up close and got some pictures with him, if only that happened when I was older (or now) where I would've seen if I could take my time and get up close and examine him. But I at the time I was just an excited kid awestruck at meeting one of my favorite characters in person. I'm so glad to see so many fans of this movie!

If I remember I definitely would have to join the droid builders club mostly because I fell in love with with Johny 5 and I always wanted to build a 💯% working version as he’s depicted in the movie ( minus the working laser beam cannon that would have to be a led light )
not that I'd ever get it, but given NASA budget and parts, the kid in me would build the laser cannon firs, haha. but, that being said, caterpillar treads rule.
I am always amazed relearning the fact that automatronics in movies like Short Circuit require MULTIPLE static built units and 'stunt doubles' and etc... I would be thrilled to own ANY of these creations. In almost any condition.

My mom was actually a background extra in Short Circuit 2. Her scenes were filmed, but never made it into the final cut. Fun Fact: The location where Johnny 5 takes the Oath of Allegiance to become a US Citizen is actually the Ontario Legislative Building in Queen's Park, Toronto, Canada.

Both of the movies are still in my top ten list. Maybe I'm weird, but for the majority of franchises back then I liked the second movie the most. The tiny toy versions that Ben made, the gold plating at the end, him swinging in to save the day with that Bonnie Tyler song playing. I love the second movie so much. I think I need to unpack some boxes and get out the DVD's again.
I can't listen to that Bonnie Tyler song without hearing all of the sound effects in my head, there's a truck horn that seems like it was timed perfectly and it's part of the song to me.
Not to mention the second one also had "badass" johnny, with the leather vest and mohawk. And when he bleeds battery acid, it was gut wrenching. The second one didn't disappoint. The first one is great too, with more of an 80s feel.

Great thing about a robot like this is if you need puppeteering stuff like that bike chain or antenna you don't have to be super careful to hide it because it blends in, chances are nobody would even notice it or they'll think it's supposed to be there.
Great childhood memories coming back! My nickname was Short Circuit because I had a rare heart condition where it short circuited and my folks explained it to me using the movie as a basis...I wish I could remember that conversation clearly but it was about 30yrs ago. But after that I was even more in love with the movie and Johnny 5!

omg! this is a staple from my childhood, it sparked my curiosity of how things work.
Man, that movie was amazing to me as a kid, because he was just so clearly _mechanical._ I loved other movie robots like R2 and 3PO, but they were both pretty abstract, their functions hidden under their skin, whereas even as a kid I could look at Johnny-5 and say "well that's how that bit works." It really inspired me to build my own nonsense little creations, cardboard "robots" stuck to RC cars.
For the longest time I refused to believe that there was an actor, an actual little person, inside R2D2...
Stuff like this should be publicly available, seen by the greater public, not end up in a private collection. But it's good to see original Johnny's are still out there.

God, I always loved the original Short Circuit film. I would love a fully functional version. I'd love to see how the originals were built and see if there were techniques we could use to modernize and upgrade the functionality.
Those movies are so moving and iconic for a lot of us that it's like those two guys are not even in the room. Johnny steals the show. Almost feels like Johnny could come to life and start talking and interacting with all of us.....

His laser is on backwards. The tapered end should be forward facing.
I really loved the short circuit movies... I'm not sure I could have even touched the price it brought but I would have liked to have bought it.
On a side note this reminds me of a video I seen on TH-cam years ago probably around 2010, in some studio theme park mop closet was sitting the gold-plated Johnny 5 from the second movie... Just posted up in the mop closet lol I have not been able to find the video recently because I wanted to show someone else... But there was no doubt about it it was gold-plated Johnny 5.

It makes me so happy that this piece still exists in reasonable condition. It is a testament to the creators that it felt just as real today as it did in the film.
As an 80s kid and now electrical engineer I would love to see a modern Johnny 5 movie.
Sadly it would likely just be CGI

I absolutely loved this movie when I was a kid. They're right that there was something believable about Johnny 5's design and it always looked like it could be functional. Now that I'm an adult and have learned more about making, I still think it is a believable prop. I miss the the days of conventional props for movies. There was an inventiveness about the aesthetics instead of lumping it in CGI mud.
Johnny still looks more realistic than any sh*tty CGI almost 40 years later.
It wasn't just the robot hardware that made people fall in love with him; a big part of it was that the story gave him heart.
Also, the story subverted the "Frankenstein Complex" as Asimov put it, and the 'creature' did *not* turn on its creator.
The concept of an intelligent killing machine designed for the military becoming a pacifist was a new take for its time.
And helped usher in others like WALL-E and C.H.A.P.P.I.E.
