The Johnny 5 robot used in the first movie was on display at the Fort Worth Texas museum of natural science and History back in 1990.
I was 5 years old and I cried my eyes out because I thought he didn't like me because he refused to talk back to me.
Johnny 5 was right up there with He-Man in my list of childhood heroes.

This is very cool. Our high school has a robotics team for going on 5 years. My son was involved for 4 years before he graduated and the kids build almost everything on the robot and take it to competitions. I volunteered as an assistant coach and taught about the tools, machining, soldering & wiring, welding, etc. It's awesome to see the kids grow and as they graduate see them go into something with robots or machining.

The power supply blew and the only thing that came out was something that sounded like "ahhhh shhhhiiiiitttt" then the controller and amp blew. That was as far as I got.

Was A. No Toy (part 2) development with speech and motion sensor would of made a great remote control toy. And B.Sadly we never got a part three A Gold Number 5 where Johnny is not trying to be killed and his creator Newton Crosby builds a Female multi colored Pink 5 using simulated Tesla lighting to bring her to life Newton and Stephanie visit Ben (a robotic wedding) and Johnny 5 orders A.I upgrade chips for himself and Golden Arms with Human hands.

Many people don't know this - the name NOVA from the SC movie actually derived from reversing the letters - AVON - which was very popular company during the 1980s. The part I can't recall is who it was (possibly a writer of the movie) who saw the AVON name in the rear-view mirror of their car just like the NOVA on the front of the van in the movie.

Quick correction on the location of the movie (which was most likely mentioned in the comments somewhere below). Where Stephanie lived was in Astoria, though the city isn't specifically mentioned in the movie. The bridge Johnny jumps off is the Astoria-Megler Bridge spanning the mouth of the Columbia river between Astoria, OR and Point Ellice, WA. I'm excited to watch this build. Short Circuit 1 & 2 were a couple of my favorite movies from the 80's. I've always wanted one of the robotic toy ones from SC2. Since those aren't available, I'm eagerly looking forward to what you'll be able to do with yours. FYI, linked here from Alec Steele's channel.

The scene where Jonny 5 gets struck by lightning was shot on the North side of the North Bonneville Hydroelectric Dam.

Short Circuit was a fun movie...no way in hell a robot like that could have been made then, hell we couldn't make one now. Fully automated, weaponized laser!, apparently unlimited data storage, multi-mode spectral vision, capable of remote hacking of otherwise closed systems.... Likely other things as well...DAMN!

You say they didn't have CNC machines back when this movie was made. They definitely did, and they even show some CNC milling in the Short Circuit intro.

NYC CNC,I'd like to see you do a video on the best procedure for a individual or shop to subcontract the making of a part or parts to a Job Shop and requiring the signing / enforcement of a non-disclosure and non-compete contracts to protect the customer's proprietary intellectual information (Idea/Design). What typically is the reaction of a Job Shop to this requirement and what is a acceptable amount of time to get them to sign the documents and get them back to You.And what typically what might a attorney charge to whip up some contracts. I'd also like to see a video on the Heat Treating and Tempering of steel and alloy parts and a Industrial Quality Black Oxide coating for steel parts.Cold tool blacking in a bottle is just such a poor quality coating. Also how do you test alloys/steels for identification in your shop?Do you have a hand held laser spectral analysis gun? Thanks for all the videos.

Actually, the robot is not from the movie, it is based on an actual robot designed in the 70's. I have the original book packed up in storage. I can't remember the name of the author or book off the top of my head unfortunately. It was a book on robotics and some of the reasons for designs. It explains why tracks are used, etc.

As much as I love Johnny 5 I never thought of taking on a challenge like this for 2 reasons 1. being simple I do not own a garage and Johnny 5 would never fit track wise through any door I have ever lived in. And 2nd reason being besides price were talking about a metal no let's just say aluminum (easier to work with) Robotic Grasshopper which has speed reading/Input Machine Learning/perfect/not auto or random responses to real life communication on an auto-mode capabilities. Also a when to do voices like Ralph Kramden "To the moon Alice" and John Wayne "Take heart little lady I'll fix their wagon" with good timing. This alone is gonna give you guys an extreme challenge even if you do end up with a moving parts replica. Good Luck. Hope you guys win. :)
