- Today let's see how far a $50 a day budget goes in Southern Thailand.
Head to www.squarespace.com/paddydoyle to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain.
We are here in the beautiful island of KOH YAO NOI located near the islands of Phuket - Koh Phi Phi and Krabi. However given this islands location, this island is much cheaper, and much quieter. The perfect place to see how far the daily backpackers budget of $50 USD per day can really go.

Do you think $50 USD a day is a realistic daily budget for Thailand?
depending very much where you're going to. For the north it will be more than enough, for the south it might be too little and for Kho Yao doesn't make any sense!
I think for a single person it`s always more expensive, we travel always with our partners, so we can share room, food and beers😊😊
@thaitraveller77 Agreed. For our Canadian dollars, especially! $25-30 for a night at a hostel or hotel is expected. Plus $5-10 for a plate of food twice per day.
That's pretty much it! With USD, you have a little more left over for transportation or entry tickets to something. But it's tight, and most people would be stressed traveling like that, imo.
You have to he creative with a 50/day budget, and forced to stay in the north.
All inclusive of all expenses I would think $50 p/day would be enough to live on. There are many days that you can get by on $10 or less for food.
For a vacation stay, I'd suggest $100 a day!
Money is so subjective Paddy. Fifty is a fortune for some and nothing to others. I can easily survive on fifty a day in Thailand. Thinking most Thais live on 300 to 500 a month USD. Always enjoy your videos mate.
To be fair, after the boat to the island, scooter and accommodation he had $17.50 per day to spend which isn't much for Southern Thailand. Most Thais aren't incurring these costs. Budget long term accommodation in Thailand is really cheap.
Budgeteers Paddy is back! This is what you were doing when I started following you, Thys, and Lina. What a stunning place. I have been to Phi Phi, Phuket, and Krabi. How I never knew about this place is shocking to me. Now I have to come back! Thanks Paddy!
Just need Paddy to start couch surfing and hitch hiking again.
Hey Paddy, that sounds like a whole new series!! Paradise off the beaten track, all those beautiful islands that we don't get to see 😊. We will definitely be adding this island to our list
$15 for a nice hotel
$7 for food
$7 for scoots rental
Happy days!
I've been a subscriber since the beginning, and I must say that these hidden jems in Thailand are my favorite videos of yours, Paddy. Keep them coming!
Koh Yao Noi was our go-to secret island when I lived in Phuket. I love it!
Love love loved this video Patty. The thing I most loved about your 77 provinces series was that you took me places that I might want to go during my winters in Thailand. This island is now on my list. Thanks for your insights . I am a budget traveller so I appreciate that perspective as well. Thanks.
Patty?! You're too soon with that, he's not doing his 'i became a Thai ladyboy' video until subscriber count gets desperate
So many islands to explore so little time! Always enjoy the informative travel videos mate.
Awesome video Paddy! Thanks for sharing this island with us 😊
Great video thanks for sharing 😊❤
This is the videos we want👍🏻👍🏻Love them
you did great love the video and the vibes my friend
That's great vlog Paddy, thank you for sharing this island that I will have to see on my next trip. Keep up the good work
What a beautiful place, one more to add to my list. Thank you for sharing!
Love these videos paddy. Really enjoy when you explore Thailand. More videos please
Amazingly beautiful Paddy! Thank you for showing us this place.❤
Nice one Paddy 👍
Always enjoy watching Paddy,,,,,peace and happiness on your travels 😊😊😊😊
Hey Paddy, Great video. You should do a series of all Thailands islands, that would be great :)
Your abundant and HIGHLY-SKILLFUL drone shots are truly next level.
I remember you testing out a new drone in Pai --- a few years ago ---
and I have been a fan every since. Thank you.
Exploring Thailand on a budget is a truly Next Level Paddy!!!
What a beautiful island. Another for the bucket list. Cheers Paddy
Had no idea this was there....great stuff
Luv your videos and sound Trax also narration
Paddy, u made it simple and cool this time. thumbs up
Awesome video.
Such great films, Paddy. Been to Koh Yao Noi twice and it is so chilled., beautiful and charming... and now I wanna go back.
such a nice video...i was able to go to Koh Yao Yai March 2020 before pandemic and it was absolutely stunning...very relaxing...probably the most touristic places you mentioned, were similar to Koh Yao islands now
Stunning view. I will go there soon
Hi Paddy mate a very interesting island quiet and peaceful
By the way seen you at the beach club at Emspere on may 1st
Malcolm
Keep pushing the interesting content
Cheers mate
Nice place. I should definitely go there one day , so many places in Thailand so little time .
Yeahhhhhhh paddy’s back !
Thank the lord
But, u said it yourself “ too old to do dorms anymore “
I’d hazard a guess and suggest so to are the majority of your followers. All the things you could have done on the second day would have turned this great video into an even more amazing video. IMHO
I could never get tired of your Thailand videos. Didn’t know hornbills lived there and what about all the cultural festivals in Thailand there must be many more than just the obvious tourist trap ones
Fantastic paddy just re subscribed
A very few youtubers can show Thailand that way Paddy.
Keep it up 👍
Well, done video Patty. I would’ve bought the beers as well.
Amazing Thailand and video of course ;-)
Hey Paddy, looks like you’re doing great! And a great video. I stumbled across your video. I remember you from the Budgeteers. You inspired me then. My wife passed away at that time after 19 years of marriage . And y’all helped me through a rough time.I am from America. Now remarried and living in Vietnam. Thank you for the videos from that time. And what you’re doing now. Looking good man. Keep it up😊 by the way. I am a new subscriber 😊
Great to have you here buddy 🙏
Serenity thank you Paddy
Wow,😍so beautiful island, you feed my travel bugs😂! You are so right Paddy, sleeping in a Dorm is no more an option, - i never ever liked it Lol ! Great video and a good challenge, Thankyou Paddy !💝👍.....btw. normally we also calculate 50 - 60 dollars per day. Above all we always want to be on "the road" for 2 months
Thumbs up 👍 Paddy
Wow, nice place, I'll remember that one😊
Hi Paddy...Good to see you...xo be safe
Looks idyllic 😊. Pleased you got your priorities right, a beer to end the day, perfect 😋
You are back to your brilliant best Paddy. Love it when you go low end earthy. You do it so well and no pretence. Youre authentic. Well done sir 🙏
Island life... aaah. Definitely looks relaxing. Some day.... some day. ❤
That distant blue look of the tiny islands is an artist's or photographer's dream. Very nice.
Great vlog Paddy. How about a vlog about Khanom Beach, Thailand ?
I travelled accros Thailand and south east Asia last year with my girlfriend as backpackers on a very tight budget.
Our daily budget about 50-60$ for both of us and we enjoyed our time very much. Everyone has different requirements of course (dorm vs private room, cheap street food vs restaurant, etc) but we had a really great time and have absolutely no regrets whatsoever. We usually spent 10$ for a room (always private room), 10-15$ on food, 5-10$ on transport and some days we spent more on activities (boat tour, kayak rental etc). But some days we just relaxed and drove around on a scooter and it costs nothing.
It’s our experience and we absolutely loved it. If you’re ready to sleep on hard beds with only a fan, eat cheap on the market, travel on local transport 50-60$ a day for 2 is possible but I can understand that people want more comfort.
Anyway it’s our opinion and our experience. SEA is a beautiful place on earth with so many incredible things to offer
Thanks for your videos Paddy your Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos series helped us a lot in planning our trip
Good job Paddy! I understand your frustration with such a few beers but you did it and can drink some more now to have it 100% natural holydays!
Also DRONE video footage very kool
Paddy, it's called a sandbar I believe . Great vlog beautiful scenes
Thank you sooo much. I have been traveling the krabi province and was thinking about heading back to koh tao area. I just made a reservation at koh yao noi before i leave this side of thailand. Am in koh lanta now and it pretty budget friendly compared to the larger amounts i spent in ao nang and railey beach
Been in love with Koh Yao Noi since the first time we traveled there in 2012. I’ve visited Yao Yai also, but think Noi is the better choice, its beauty and peaceful laid back feeling are just amazing. Thanks for this video, Paddy!
I’m going to Koh Yao Noi in June!
Your best format Paddy! We miss the budgeteers…
The wife and I budget £500 a month when we travel Thailand for both of us, for food accommodation and travel/activities. We do fine 😅
Spent 4 nights on Koh Yao Noi in March, we stayed in those beach huts by the beach bar. That beach bar was the only area that had sun beds so we spent a lot of time there. Just loved the island.
Backpacked Thailand for a month in 2022, managed to do it for £32 a day per person which included learning to dive etc, love how cheap you can travel over there - can't wait to return at Christmas!
Hello Mate! This vlog was really fun and intimate. That island is so chill. It gave me the Big Lebowski vibe Dude! How was the drive from BK to the launch to get to this Island? Definitely worth a visit or two. Thanks so much for sharing?
I came here from Phuket so it was really easy, just a short speed boat ride
Very helpful video!
Is it better to change currency there in Thailand?
I am set to visit Phuket and Krabi on June and im not sure where to change currency. Thanks!
Yes! $50 per day is definitely a realistic budget for a nice vacation in Thailand! 😊 Last year we met a backpacker couple in the Philippines. They are traveling around the world for more than a year now and their average daily budget is approximately $25 😃👍🏼 I think more people need to know that traveling doesn’t have to be expensive.
I had survived in Thailand for years on $30 or less per day, best years of my life.......
ah, Koh Yao Noi! while Maya Bay was made famous by The Beach, Koh Yao Yai was made known in 2016 from the Hollywood movie starring Jason Statham, Jessica Alba & Michelle Yeoh - “Mechanic: Resurrection". it's paradise until some movie or social media blow it up.
I stayed here in a beach bungalow well over 20 years ago, you should have seen it then Paddy! I needed a torch to walk around as there wasn't much lighting around back in the day at night.
Looks like a magical place to recharge for a couple of days :)
this island is a sleeper for sure!
are you still here, paddy? we arrived a hour ago and i already love it!!!
Hey Paddy, greetings from Holland again, Dude, how do you find this wow factor? It's really amazing, I know you know a lot about Thailand, but damn, I'm only 30 days in September, how am I going to do all that you show, whahahaha I think I'll just retire there thx Paddy for another great video👌👍
In another dimension, Paddy went to sunset bar for some more beers when the video ended :)
Stayed Santiya Koh Yao Yai , beautiful
So beautiful island 😮🤗🙂🫰❤️🏖🏝🌴🌊🎉🎊
Paddy. You should try to go to Koh Phayam. It is off the coast of Ranong. Quiet, beautiful & inexpensive (when I was there in February 2022). Lots of cool out of way places to visit. Hope you try record & enjoy.
Thanks for the tip!
Last time I was in Thailand was three months in 2000. Your videos are so inspiring me to go back! If you were to buy new drone for travelling, what would you recommend?
I imagine that after finishing that Leo beer can at final minutes of the show, you promptly rushed to Sunset Bar right after the sunset.
Joke aside, here come serious ones. You got two strengths. First being you could resist that scorching heat/sun and you delivered. Second is you can eat all sort of foods comfortably - even Thai meal as a breakfast. Super local.
Great work.
Have you seen the Race Across the World TV series? This year they are doing Japan to Lombok. Might be a good concept for a TH-cam series on a budget
Laem haad beach. Nice
Yes
A stunningly beautiful island, am on Koh Yao Noi now. Not exactly the most budget friendly especially if you don't ride a motorbike and are a solo traveller..Absolutely gorgeous for a holiday nonetheless and some nice resorts if you can afford it.
In Hua Hin, I lived in a nice bachelor condo with a pool on the roof of the building, just around the corner from a busy entertainment hub (famous soi) for just 15,000 THB per month. Water & electricity extra. Off season. Gotta love that.
that's a steal!
Koh = Island
Kao = mountain
Yao = Long
Yai = Big
Noi = Small
Paddy, I'm a big fan. Really enjoyed your material on Vietnam. By comparison, this stuff is weak. I know the north-to-south bicycle thing didn't pan out, but you said during it that east-to-west would be more workable. Why don't you do that? I'm not watching any more of this current stuff, but would if you got back on your bicycle. Maybe end at the Bridge on the River Kwai.
Can you spin these at all and level up just above budget to a medium ‘ish’ level too, for us slightly older at all ? enjoyed this place..thanks mate 👍🇦🇺🇳🇿
HA PATTY JUST GOT THE NEW DJI MINIPRO 4 A LITTLE NEET LIKE UOUR VLOG KEEP IT UP THAILAND IS THE GREATEST SAY HOW IS MISS PE
Shut the front door !! I was there last week and stayed at the accommodation next to you 10:16 nice place and great area
Would of brought you some drinks if we were staying at the same time
Now back in shitty UK
it is more than doable, u just need to plan your days ahead, and it is not a problem, some days i spent like 25-30 dollars a day in thailand and i had lunch, dinner, some drinks in the evening
I’m watching your video in my dorm room I’m 55 years old and have stayed in some fabulous dorms rooms. You should try one again as I have found them great 😊
I’m interested in how you find the noise. I agree with PD, I could manage it when I was 33, not sure anymore. Do you mind the random chats, phone noises etc? Earplugs are great, but not perfect. Also I have been told I’m a horrendous snorer, so I feel a bit self conscious now in dorms 😅
lol if you snore 💤 maybe a private is better!!!! 😂 I’ve been very lucky I was in a 16berth mixed dorm in kk Borneo I stayed for a month!!! Right now I’m in a 8 berth female dorm in a party hostel. Noise until 11.45pm then quiet. I am staying here for 12 nights. I also do videos so my children and grandchildren can see where I am. Loving 🥰 life 😊
@@nanwithabackpack You can occasionally get lucky alright, I guess I just remember the bad experiences. The dorm stays were usually fine unless dealing with crappy people. Fair play to you, you’ll have to bring your grandkids on a tour with all your travel knowledge 🙏
maybe one day they are too young yet aged between 10 and 18months.
Please come back to Koh Yao Noi without tight budgeting. I am so happy for you to visit this beautiful island, and also shame that you worry about budget haha :)
I ❤ Thailand. Beautiful country. The food is very affordable and delicious.
I need to know how you get your teeth so nice and white. Especially as you are traveling around so much.
Another great video too!
This looks like Koh Samui 20 years ago. Definitely on my list.
There’s always one koh samui 20 years ago reference on low key islands lol
Great video.
Islands look amazing and really hope they stay like that. Doing nothing on an island is what they are there for. If you did loads of stuff I’d be disappointed. The idea of an island is to slop out. Beer out, belly out, sandals on. Done.
Hi man im enjoying your videos, im watching as im planning to go there my self, But I have a burning question on my mind for you. Because of work I can only get free for 3 weeks in a row in November. How is the weather in November? sun, temp, wind, water etc. Thanks in advance if you are able to reply :) greetings Joe
Hi Joe. November is peak tourist season because of the good weather. Raining season is finished and hot/burning season hasn’t started yet . November December and January are the ideal months
@@Hm-ky3nu thanks thats perfect news.
@@QuickJoe there is also a downside of it being peak season. Much more crowded in the main tourist areas and less available/ affordable rooms . Enjoy your trip!
Been there 2X starting in 2015
Can't believe that you visited Ranong many episodes ago, but didn't visit Koh Phayam. Maybe seeking out relatively unknown islands is the way forward?
I'm at the end of day 2 in the video and after visiting the bar, poor Paddy is quickly running out of money fast. I'm now wondering if day 2 will suddenly turn into one of those extreme dieting videos. 💸🤣
in Florida we call them sandbars.
I think the sandy outcrop is called a spit?
Ooh I'm in Koh Yao Noi. Not a budget friendly island at all for backpacker and except for Pad Thai! It is a stunningly beautiful island.
Haha. Paddy blew his wad on Tay Tay tix in Singapore!
My lowest was spending 240 bath in a day 😂. Hotel not included. Spent the day at the beach and that was it.
When you come back to Samui? 🤣🇹🇭🥊
I remember over 30 years ago been down to my last 1000 baht in bangkok having a few days before i was. due to fly home i probably enjoyed my shelf more having to make the money last ive stayed in 4 star hotels in thailand and in 80 bht airless rooms living like the poor is not so bad it makes you grateful for what little you havec
